Great video as always. Love the way Rick explains EVERYTHING, (without mincing words! 😜), and gives details that many times are only known because of years of experience...
the sign of a true professional
I love Faye's excitement and eagerness to learn (and pass along that info) - this is YT utopia.
Used to know a guy (he’s passed on now) that worked at a body shop from the 60s to the 90s. This was way before computers could give you a colour match. That guy could mix paint by eye to nearly a perfect match. Wonder how many old school painters are left that can do that.
was his name Jessie
Thank you so much for showing this. I am so sick of customers saying "just paint it BMW silver." I'm like "which one?"
Love it. I used to be a car mechanic and later worked in a body shop and loved the whole process of mixing paint.
This was my first time seeing it mixed!!! So cool!!
Yeah a lot of men out there don't wanna talk about flop control, but it's a very important topic! This video brought to you by Roman. 😆
Awesome video as always. Love all the background info. It's not always what you know, but who you know and what they know!
Super fascinating! One of my high school jobs was mixing paint (household) and doing custom matches. That was 80's where we would mix it close, then tweak tiny amounts based on experience to sneak into the match - waiting to dry and check in sunlight between each change was time consuming but we would end up with dead on matches.
Very impressive, thanks for giving us a behind-the-scenes look. I’m always amazed by people in different trades how much knowledge and experience they have.
Faye, Rick is soo right about the OEM paint. I would even gather to say that cars that were painted in Japan varied from cars that were painted in America! Thanks so much! Keep up the great work!!!
THANK YOU!!!! :))
Good morning Faye.
Hope everyone is having a blessed day
You’re a great interviewer. You ask the questions I would ask, and bring out the enthusiasm of these experts in their field.
Hey Faye, I can always count on you That it’s great fun or very educational 99% of the time is both. That’s a great color back in the day that was very popular at least around here. Heard on the radio this morning that Texas lost a lot of power. Hope that didn’t affect you, so stay warm and have a good one.🐔🐔🐔👍
Thank you Rick for sharing your experience
Nice work beautiful car love you videos keep up the good work can't wait to see the car completed
Great video, Faye! Very interesting and informative.
Glad you liked it!! So grateful Rick let me film!!
Rick is a wealth of knowledge on the paint scene. I have watched other videos of mixing paint and some of the different colors mixed together to get a certain color will blow your mind. Thank you for sharing. Peace and Love.
Car's coming out cleeeeeean!
Another great shop in my backyard!
beautiful job and color! I really like that color. my 1989 non turbo car I had in high school and collage was that color, and I regret selling it
You had this paint code?!?! That's so awesome!!!
I remember back in the day in painting my cars (non-prof) and having special colors made. I then took that knowledge to a large format printing company I worked for when I had to color match by measure. Very cool and old technique which printers still use today. Ahh, the memories...
Paint looks absolutely gorgeous
Thank you!!!!
After watching this video I think I learned enough so that I can open my own paint shop
Thanks Rick and Faye I learned a lot concerning paint! Excellent!
We use a Camera at our body shop. You buff a small area and snap a shot up close with this weird looking camera, upload it and it conjures up a formula for the best possible match
My biggest automotive regret is selling my '87 Targa Turbo. MA70s will always hold a special place in my heart. I sold it after blowing the third 7M-GTE. :(
It's great that youre giving that cat the love it deserves.
Hey Faye 🙂 Had the good fortune of spending quite a few hours with a friend of the family that was one of the best Panel Beaters/Spray Painters in our region 😁 Learnt SO much from him 👍 Kudos to Rick for helping our Faye out 😊
Learn something new everyday 👍
Rick is THE paint doctor.
Great looking paint job from a very knowledgeable painter
Can't believe I'm saying this... but through this series, you and Rick have given me the confidence to maybe take on a future project that would require paint work. I'll be taking it into the Paint Spot for sure though. Hehe. Guy is a true master of his craft!
Oh my gosh, thank you!!!
I had no idea!. My goodness, how very humbling this all was. 😉
This was f***ing awesome! What a wonderful guy Rick is. A true craftsman.
That was really cool to see the way you make a paint colour match, so much work many probably don't realise, thanks Faye and Rick.
Rick is a true professional.
yes! this is the content and info I am here for!
Awesome! Thank you!
My favorite MK3 channel! Lovely job
Hey Faye, great video as always! I just noticed something that kind of alarmed me, the gentlemen showing you how the paint gets matched has a stripe on his fingernail. I would ask him to get that checked out, the last person that I heard had that ended up finding a life threatening illness and they had to surgically remove the nail before it spread. Wishing for the best
I apppreciate the time Rick is taking to explain. I have gone to Tasco and they don’t do anything to educate and create a lifelong customer.
Great video! Thanks to Rick for sharing his knowledge. I'm 69 thus proving you can learn something new at any age... you're never too old to learn something new. Thanks, Faye!
This is so cool watching the master at work! So many years of experience being shown here. The PT cruiser we painted is gold, and we don't have any experience with metal flake, but luckily we were able to get this mixed elsewhere. However, we never saw this behind the scene wizardry. We have metal spray out cards, but we didn't know about the ones made of plastic, so we'll have to consider this in future. My dad's shop I work for deals with vehicles that are so old no paint code exists so I'd be curious to see what Rick does for that. Great job always, and my favourite colour is blue, so this may be my favourite Supra! 💙
That was really cool, I had no idea so much went into matching paint.
You have great taste.. I wrecked a 92 Supra.. I miss it. I can't wait to see the finished product!!
Can’t express how meaningful this video is. Wish it was three times as long, thank you so much Rick!
Fascinating! I didn't realize how many ingredients go into a car paint colour - and some in such tiny ammounts. Thanks for sharing Rick!
I think Rick just upped a lot of “painters” game.
very cool, cant wait to see it in the sun.
Great information and very accurate. 10+ years in the paint & coating industry and he is absolutely right, you get what you pay for.
Thank you so much for the validation!!!
Putting on a masterclass
come on guys, spread the word, she needs more than 139k subscribers, ive gotten her atleast 7, come on
Great video! Happy Friday Faye! 🤙
Great explanation of flop. I’ve helped the term before, and I knew what it was, but now I know why it happens.
In their defense, I can see why they refer to it as a flop agent and not a suspension agent. Probably saves them a number of phone calls and explanations.
Another thing that can affect color is what color primer/sealer you’re using, speed you’re moving the gun, pressure you’re using, humidity… So many factors that guys like Rick need to take into account.
That was awesome, thank you Faye 👍😁❤️
Sooo glad you enjoyed it!!!
This was so educational! Thank you for helping me learn not just what goes into a great paint job, but also what questions to ask at a body shop!
Also chickens. +1 chickens.
Queen of Pixies. Car looks 🍒
Air pressure you spray at can effect the way metal flake appears also.
The car is looking great! Glad you found a guy that knows his stuff.
So glad you kept that color, looks amazing.
Thank you so much, me too!!!
I love this, who knew, “Rick”. That’s great information Faye, Thank you!!!
This was soooo informative. Fantastic! Thanks Faye.
That is certainly something that computes but you rare consider on color-matching OEM, and it's fascinating to finally hear it. All the residual paint in the lines. Wha-ha!
At a meet-up of a fairly rare vehicle we had some time back ('99 Vehicross), most all of the survivors had different colors just as it goes, but we had an earlier Silver Metallic that was a fair bit darker than a later built Silver Metallic the following model year. The light bulb comes on at long last.
Nice Toyota sense, wonderful story.
The flop control is one way to keep the metallics from laying over when they are supposed to stand up it's another reason why you have to use the right temperature range for the chemicals a 70° reducer or an 80-degree reducer because if stuff does not flash off in the correct amount of time the solids will lay down instead of stand-up in the paint. This is very important on transparent colors like light blues and especially silver's
Always learning something from you Faye, car is going to be amazingly sick looking , can’t wait!!! 🤩🤟👍
I so want to put my Bronco in her factory fresh colors. Appreciate the info, the content is 🔥keep rocking ✌️
That was awesome.
Faya good Friday morning to u this was another helpful video about automotive paint colors Rick is awesome inductor knows automobile paint from factory well.

Very interesting.. Thank you
I love this guy he knows his shit and Diamont in my opinion is the best paint on the planet! I shoot it often... Kudos!~!!
Fantastic! I’ve oft wondered how this would be done. Now I know! Thank you for this, Faye.👍
wow faye, tanks for so much knowledge of one old wolf mate, love u greetings from argentina
I used to work for a pigment manufacturer that supplied PPG, BASF, and others. A pigment that is dirty or clean has to do with color accuracy when comparing two samples. If you add a small amount of the opposite color (opposite in color space or color wheel) it will appear “dirty” when applied to the car. For example, the opposite of blue is yellow. Adding some yellow pigment to it will make what is called a color that is dirtier. This goes back to the pigment manufacturer trying to make pigments that are the same batch after batch after batch. It can be very difficult to do when trying to keep the cost of the pigment low.
Great Video!!! Very informative! Thanks Rick!!!! 👍🏽😉
This was really interesting. It’s awesome he was willing to share this info. Thanks to both of you!
That is very interesting. Thank you for this video, Faye, and Rick
Wow, this was such an interesting video. Who knew there could be that many variants of the same color from the same manufacturer. I wonder what that dirty & red variant would look like against your pristine paint.
Hi Faye! Really interesting video. Thanks 🙂👍❤️
Thank You.
Great information, your videos are always good
It takes a true talent to mix paint . It is hard to find In the days of snad them and shoot them.
Thank you so much, super interesting and informative video!!
That was a great video. I learned a lot of stuff I didn’t even know. I love how Rick explains it so well.
Nice color.
Thank you so much!! It's the OEM color!!

When I was 17, I bought a Datsun 510 wagon from a Datsun/Honda/Toyota mechanic who used it as a shop vehicle. I was going to have it painted Royal Grey, the same color Aston Martin used, and even though It was a common color, I couldn't find a paint shop that could figure it out.
Whoa, really?!?!! I bet Rick could!! You still have interest in mixing that someday?? (Love the username btw but I think I've told you that before!!😅)
@@FayeHadley I wish that I still had that car, but I sold it years ago. I went with a sky blue mixed with grey. It was close enough. And yes, you did tell me that you liked my username before. Thank you.
Holy shit im only half way through the vid and I already know what my retirement job is going to be.....I love this video so far
Rick shared some of it, there is much more to the process.

Mr. Ciotti, Master painter, and personal paint detective it seems...🧐
Great video i been using the same basf software and paint for 11 years!
All through the video i was ohhhh ahhhh lol, i want to see that man paint Faye if possible please make that happen. Great video i always love learning something new specially when I'm leaning from people who actually know what they're doing like yourself and your guest. Much love and respect from over here in Cali!. Tell your chickens i said what up!.
Okay, I will absolutely make that happen! I did include some footage at the end of my last video, but I sped it up, because I did not think that people would be nearly as interested as I was since it was my car!! But I'll absolutely make this happen!!!
