Fantastic discussion. Strongly back David that you can't judge a piece written well over half a century ago by today's (ever changing) standards, obviously. The audience should be trusted to take the wider and more intrinsic value from each piece.
What timing! I just watched Diamonds Are Forever on RUclips last night and I like it. I don't think the film gets enough credit. The thing I really like about it is that it shows that even a supervillain like Blofeld has to rely on street-level thugs to do the grunt work.
@@greatwuta Like I said, it shows that even a supervillain like Blofeld has to rely on street-level thugs to do the grunt work. In From Russia With Love, we get an inkling of the corporate structure of SPECTRE when Kronsteen is referred to as Director of Planning. In Thunderball, my all-time favorite Bond film, we see that SPECTRE is, in fact, organized like a corporation, with a Board of Directors dedicated to rationally planned activities that are criminal rather than legal. With Diamonds Are Forever, we get to see how the whole operation works from the bottom up, with every lower-level player doing his/her part. Rest assured, I've seen every Bond film through all the Brosnans, plus Casino Royale, which sucked, sucked, sucked, and Skyfall, which I liked and which made me like Craig as Bond. But, the Connery Bonds are still my favorites and Connery is still my favorite Bond, followed immediately by Brosnan.
@@ediesedgwick4462 so you like Diamonds Are Forever but hated Casino Royale? OK. You Only Live Twice is my favorite bond film from Sean Connery followed by Thunderball.
Just finished it, felt like it lacked some polish. I like the setting, gangster diamond smuggling, the mud baths, Bond's constant underestimation of the gangsters as an adversary, and Tiffany Case. I'd give a solid 7- plot wasn't as good as CR, the adventure wasn't as exciting as LALD, the villains aren't as good as Drax and his crew. Fleming's work improved as the first 3 were written, but DAF feels like a slight decline. FRWL was a huge step up (admittedly reading slightly out of order). Dr. No went to new places as far as scale and creativity. Started Thunderball and even on the first chapter Bond and M's interactions have me hooked.
As a female Bond fan, who is also a lesbian, I loved how your discussion covered feminism and homophobia!! These book clubs are so entertaining - keep up the awesome work.
Just read the book (having seen the movie before). Although it has some flaws, it was quite good. Unlike the movie, which is terrible. The movie plot is just ridiculously stupid and so many things make no sense. I don't know why they didn't follow the book more closely. To shorten things up they could have skipped Saratoga and gone from New York to Las Vegas.

I want to hear Melanie talk about Bond all the time

Really you like that.........
I can't never get why people think that film is good.
I hope and pray you watch the other Bond films.

I absolutely love the musical score from Diamonds Are Forever. It's among my very favorites, alongside Moonraker.
This discussion makes me think more of the book after reading, very enjoyable experience as always onto FRWL
The book just steamrolls the movie any day of the week.
10 minutes of jibber jabber and padding, then into the substance. Really great from then on.

Grey goose from Glasgow Scotland !!
Never read the novel.. but could Sid Haig's dual roles in the DAF film be a very loose nod to the Spang Brothers?
"I got a brudda" 🤣
Small world.
