As a child, I lived a few doors down the road from the village veterinarian so this book brings back memories. He often did procedures on farm animals such as horses and pigs in his front yard so I got to see all sorts. He also let me assist him, especially with small animals such as cats and dogs. Today there would be a child labour law or an insurance concern (ha!) but I loved it and I learned a lot. The only thing our village lacked was a Mrs. Pumphrey and Tricki Woo.

Ultimately there’s a poetic dimension to the book, written by a kind and benevolent human being, with his descriptions of Nature, love of animals and fellow human beings. James Herriot never loses his temper, even in the face of the worst, and describes most situations with a great sense of humour (for instance the events of his first date with Helen 😂). I will most certainly reread it, thank you Miranda and Donna for this choice. ❤

Hello from Calgary Miranda, Donna and Comfort Book Club members! All Creatures Great and Small is one of my all-time favourite books. I have re-read it multiple times since the ‘70s and go back to it whenever I need to immerse myself in the nostalgia of the interwar years and the magical setting of pastoral Yorkshire countryside. The humour infused into the anecdotes never fails to make me laugh - descriptions of the farm visits where hopeful expectations wither to the painful reality of a cow that likes to “shake hands”! The characters are so well described that some have become like relatives I have never met, but feel I know, based solely on the stories told about them- Tristan’s practical jokes over the telephone line, Seigfried’s various mercurial episodes and dear Tricki Woo, provider of Fortnum and Mason hampers! Herriot reminds us to stop and enjoy the things that bring us peace, even when we are busy. Thank you for choosing this book for the Comfort Book Club this month. For me, it is like coming home.

I loved watching All Creatures Great And Small as a child and spent many childhood holidays in the Yorkshire Moors and then the Yorkshire Dales which was where I bought my first James Herriot book when I was about 13, it was Dog Stories. We visited Askrigg, I loved having my photo taken outside the property used as the exterior of 'Skeldale House', and the book was for sale in a nearby shop. I still have it almost 40 years on, it's very well loved and read. Now I go there on days out and breaks with my husband and children. We all visited the James Herriot Museum in Thirsk last year, a fantastic trip which we all enjoyed. Hopefully, my love of his books will be passed onto my children, they love the modern TV series and we're looking forward to the next series. ❤

Hi Miranda and Donna, this is one of my favorite books, and I read it as an adult and remember Alf White being interviewed on TV, and hearing about his writing of the works. Then later as a teacher I shared the picture books with my students. But my favorite parts were the interplay between the personalities in the book. I loved the antics that Tristan got up too. Then later on we took a trip from America to Yorkshire and visited all the landmarks that James visited like the Buttertubs, the Wheatsheef, where he spent his honeymoon and the pubs that James frequented. It was a wonderful vacation. We took my mother along and was a highlight of our lives. Thank you for sharing one of my very favorites!❤😊😊😊

I can't imagine a more delightful way to spend 25 minutes on a rather cool summer Sunday. The opening description of a bare chested James lying on a cold cobblestone barn floor trying to help a cow give birth made me realize what a wonderfully descriptive writer and caring veterinarian he was. This book really has it all, compassion, stellar work ethics, the relationship between humans and animals, and humor! Thank you so much for this choice ❤

My first contact with the books of James Herriot was in my early teens. I was aware of the author through the TV series but wasn't convinced, until I picked up a copy of the Reader's Digest where I stumbled across a single chapter. I think that it was set at Christmas time, where James bemoaned being broken from his slumber in order to attend to a birthing. I could be muddling different stories but I remember that his Christmas spirit was reawakened by new life and the gratitude and humble hospitality of an elderly couple. I felt an air of magic in this first story and went on to read all of the books. Now, at the age of 57, I still return to James Herriot for comfort and a sense of stability in an ever changing World.

Hello Miranda & Donna, I really enjoyed this month’s read and this great discussion of a book series that has become a classic to so many readers. In the early 1980’s my family used to stay on a farm in Yorkshire where Jim White was actually their vet. We never had the chance to meet him personally, but the couple who ran the farm told us tales about his visits, even treating the farmer’s wife when she didn’t have time to visit a doctor! Have a lovely week.

So glad to be getting back to the Comfort Book Club, albeit 12 days later than I intended! I took a break from RUclips for a while to catch up on some other things but I am so anxious to get back to a bit of a routine. I thoroughly enjoyed All Creatures Great and Small, another book I’ve been wanting to read for decades. All the wonderful character, animal, and landscape descriptions made me feel like I was right there in the stories. I just loved chuckling here and there throughout the book and the couple of lines about Sam, who could imitate a fly and it was the only thing he was good at was both sad and hilarious! And, “If only my car had had any brakes...”😳😂 Thank you so much for picking this book! You and Donna look so lovely and I’m so glad to look forward to the Comfort Book Club again! 💚📚

Hi there. I had to look up the date when If only they could talk was published, because I had no clue. I was sure I had first read it very early on, but perhaps it was a bit later. It (and the TV series) was a firm favourite in our family. On top of that, in the late 70s I worked as a Library assistant in Edinburgh : ah, they joy of being able to borrow as many books as you want, and being able to snaffle NEW BOOKS when they came in! I'm sure I read James Herriot's books so many times - when I could get them: they were very popular indeed for many years.

What a lovely discussion - I loved this story, I listened on audio book which was read by Christopher Timothy and I found myself laughing out loud most of the time! I was also reminded of a time where I lived next to a dairy farm and we got to know the farmer quite well - despite having around 70 dairy cows, he knew them all individually, had named them all and was really quite attached to them - he even played music to them during milking. Farmers "caring" so much about their cattle hadn't really occurred to me prior to that and I think this also comes through very well in this book. Thank you for choosing such a great book x

My husband and I rotated reading I got the afternoon and he got the evening. Once the books came out in paperback we splurged and we bought two copies so there was no waiting for our turn. It was grand fun to reread. Still love the animal stories. My grandsons are enjoying their father's and uncle's picture book version and my granddaughter is reading our original copies.

Thank you for another great discussion. Having read the books more than once back in the 70s I was surprised by how primitive life sounded…..brought up in the Yorkshire of the 50s the cold of Winter (no heating) was no surprise, yet now the descriptions of the bitter cold and deep snowdrifts seem to come from another time and place. The author’s dry humour, the hospitality of those hardy farmers and the hilarious escapades are still utterly charming though.

Thank you, Miranda and Donna for this wonderful CBC read and discussion! Although, ACGAS is a lengthy novel, it's such an easy read. Often, I'd find that I was quite a few chapters along without even realizing I had read so much. I think that's a testament to Herriot's ( Wight's) smooth as silk writing style which effortlessly glides along. My main takeaway from reading ACGAS this time is Herriot's constant gratitude that he landed this incredible position in such a glorious setting. I feel that he never became complacent and always seemed in awe of his luck to be doing exactly what he wanted in this incredibly beautiful location. I picture him having to pinch himself from time to time to make sure it wasn't all a dream.

In 2012, we visited the town of Thirsk and and toured the vet's office/home and whom should pull up in his car was the actor Christopher Timothy who we talked to for a few minutes!! I'm reading this book at the moment and have been reading it and his others every few years since I was about 10 years old. I find them so comforting, the simplicity of the time it was written, the description of the house, the landscape, the farms etc, so familiar to me and so beautifully written, I still cry laughing at the stories even though I know them by heart. I too loved the old tv series but hated, totally hated the new one, the characters were all wrong, especially Mrs Hall - dreadful I thought.

Thank you for another wonderful video- we went to the James Herriot museum back in July what a wonderful place to visit and the town of Thirsk is lovely too - I came out of the museum gift shop with a bag full of books- I bought the book that your mum was reading from- very interesting book- absolutely loved Yorkshire.

Thank you for another delightful discussion! I adored this book and will definitely have to pick up the next one in the series. He was such a great writer, and I agree with one of the voicemails that said he felt like a friend after reading the book. His love for his profession, the animals, his friends, and Yorkshire just shines through and wraps you up in it too.

He has a really engaging writing style, and I especially loved the way he mixed in poignant chapters with funnier, more lighthearted ones. Thanks to both of you for recommending this book! Hi Miranda and Donna! I am so behind...only halfway through (summers are busy!) but I'll catch up with Goodbye Mr. Chips and keep dipping in and out of All Creatures, which is fantastic on those mornings when I wake up way to early and need to make some warm milk and cinnamon and read something relaxing to get back to sleep! So far my favorite thing is Herriot's dealings with the farmers, I find it humorous and ever so interesting! Thank you for all you do for the CBC! I just saw your reading list for the upcoming months and I'm so excited for our next reads!

One of the highlights of my week are the vlogs that you post! I am a retired elementary teacher who loves England and loves reading!
I miss my mom who also loved to read, and I so enjoy the loving interactions between you and your mom!
The Almanac is also a treat that I enjoy each morning!
I can only imagine how much time is taken from you responding to the many comments. I think if it’s too much, that’s really fine. Please don’t get overwhelmed…The daily post needs to be a joy for you too. Maybe I worry too much…just like I do with my daughter when she gets so busy. Have a good week!

I ordered the rest of the books off Amazon. Looking forward to these sweet, cozy, beautiful heartfelt stories, landscape humor, for the fall and winter seasons …. I loved revisiting James Herriot - I couldn't find my paperback copies of the first two books but have 'The Best of James Herriot' and I read the first few chapters. I had forgotten just how much his books make me laugh. There are so many laugh out loud moments, right near the beginning when he goes off with Siegfried in the car and the seat isn't fixed in place; his description is hilarious. Also love his wonderful descriptions of the landscape and of course the animals. His relationship with Tricki Woo, to whom he became 'Uncle Herriot' was very sweet - and also lucrative with the gifts from Mrs. Pumphrey. This was a super choice for our Comfort Read. Thanks Miranda and Donna.

Hi Miranda and Donna...❤. Thank you for this lively episode. Yes, I do enjoy the book. There is always something to make you 😅 in each new chapter. A stress reliever actually. The character of the animals were described so well..imagine a pig caught sight of itself in Robson's shop window, stared at its reflection for a few moments then leaped back with a startled grunt...!!!!. And the chaos when ten large pigs got loose among the packed stalls on market-day.!!!
Looking forward to more CBC discussions. Have fun with your reading Miranda and Donna...

Love All Creatures Great and Small, and like yourselves have wonderful memories of sitting watching the TV series of a Saturday evening at my Grandmother's home. Gran also had the books and was a huge fan (also same age as Alf Wight) The countryside, the animals and the people are so vividly brought to life, and his love for all things Yorkshire springs out from every page. Thanks again for the recommendation, I'll be passing it on to my sister when I'm done.

All Creatures Great and Small is one of those books that I'd heard about but never read. I did a lot of driving this summer, so I listened to the audiobook on my car rides. I really enjoyed the 'in the trenches' look at his life as a veterinarian. He wrote with feeling about the people and the animals he encountered. Take care ladies and thanks.

I read them in the 1970's and remember so much how funny they were, real laugh out loud stuff! This book is an old favourite of mine, and is as funny as ever. Some of my ancestors were yeoman farmers near Tunstall (North, not East) before going to Australia looking for gold so I found something very potent in the descriptions of the countryside and the Dalesmen.
