I live in Seoul. In 2022 I had an operation and the hospital is next to the library which has a good English book section. Well, my wife and I called in just before going into the hospital. I saw 'The Wind in the Willows' on the shelf - a nicely produced copy with nice illustrations. I took it out. I hadn't read it for forty years or so. Anyway, in the couple of days I was in hospital it considerably eased my recovery! Thank you for another excellent choice, reviews and insights into Grahame and the book.

This was my first read of "The Wind in the Willows" and I was enchanted. The language was beautiful and I loved Grahame's descriptions of the beauty of the natural world as the seasons progressed. All of the characters have found a place in my heart. What touched me the most was the depiction of the warm, accepting and supportive friendship among a group of diverse personalities. Many passages moved me to tears (in a good way). I plan to reread Chapter V at Christmas time - I adored the field mice and their carol.
Miranda and Donna, It as been wonderful to see the community of this book club grow and I cherish that it is a thoughtful, insightful and respectful place that is much needed in our world. 💕

TWITW is my favourite book. It has been since a child and I am now 71. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is possibly my favourite chapter in all literature, and like you I'm an avid reader. A few years ago I treated myself to a boxed Folio edition, mainly because it was so beautiful, but also I thought when I'm really old it would be a lot easier to read. Blessings Julie x. Great discussion. My favorite character was Badger. Guess because I can relate to needing my alone time. Would love to live in Badgers house. So cozy. Loved Mole and Rats friendship. Toad, just irritated me. 😂. Enjoyed you giving us a little bit of back story of Kenneth Grahames life. Thank you two very much. 📚👍🤗💕💕

I don’t know what it says about me that Toad is my favourite character. If Toad were a human being, I would find him insufferable. Yet because he’s a fictional, joyriding, horn-honking amphibian, I find him hilarious and I laughed at all his hijinks. And you’ve got to love a toad dressed in drag.
Thank you, Miranda and Donna, for another wonderful Comfort Book Club episode.

I, too, miscalculated the time and tuned in just after you finished. My favorite scene in the book is the Christmas dinner in chapter V. I have a book called Best Holiday Foods and Crafts and in it is a chapter where the authors imagine the dinner served in Wind in the Willows. Since sardines are mentioned, there is a recipe for Hot Sardines and Salmon Crescents which I made and took to a Christmas Eve gathering of friends. It was really quite tasty even though I'm not a fan of sardines. Wind in the Willows sits on my night stand to offer comfort when the world encroaches.

Dear Miranda, thank you for this wonderful vlog. My favorite chapter was the one when mole returns to his house. The way Grahame described the deep sadness inside mole getting finally out and the kind way of ratty consoling him really touched me and I kept thinking about it for a while. My very best favourite book of life and always gives me great 'joy and contentment'. So much so we went to stay with our young children at Goring on Thames near Grahame's home:. a magical holiday. My introduction to the WiW was as a 13 yr old being read the stories in hot dusty school rooms in Australia by my library and English teachers who both decided to read the story to us at the same time.! We didn't tell dear Mrs Watson or Mrs Crosswaite [not their names] they had doubled up on the oral readings our class of rough outdoorsy kids just settled in and immersed ourselves in the cool green language of the river and the countryside. That feeling has stayed with me and i often dip into my favourite parts. Moley coming home at Christmas touching all his homely little bits and pieces. i love how Grahame describes the everyday and his description of the visit of the otter and how the ripples in the water gradually 'declares itself to be an eye!! i could go on and on about how wiw has been a part of my life in all its stages and i have already said far too much. . I could tell about how as a teacher i recreated the Riverbank complete with crepe paper willow trees in my classroom every year and had a classic picnic. But i wont I'll stop here! Thankyou dear Miranda and Donna souls connected from across the
    world so so wonderful.

Currently it had just turned winter here in NZ and I am sitting in a rural old cottage with a roaring log fire when Ratty & Mole find Mr Badgers house. It is raining here and snow is forecast too. I can’t believe that at 67 years of age, this is the first time I’ve read The Wind in the Willows. I’ve always been a reader but somehow this book eluded me. I know there will be rereads of it in the future. This is just one of the reasons I love our comfort book club, I’m introduced to so many authors and books that quickly become beloved favorites. I’m interested now in his biography too. I would like to read it before my next reread of TWITW. One of my least favorite animals in real life is the rat. I still have many of my children’s books that we’ve kept in very good condition. Some are like new yet my hubby and I would read to our children every night. They are both in their 30s now. I have recently decided to bring out some of those books. Wind in the willows are a few I am revisiting. Two large beautifully illustrated books adventures of Mr Toad and Riverbank and other stories. I’m going to enjoy them. Thank you for the reminder. Sending a wave to you from London. 🌸

I just finished this book today (okay, so I'm a little bit behind the CBC reads) and watched your video discussion. I, too, very much enjoyed the book, especially the friendship among Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad. I loved how the 3 animals all came together to help Toad (even though he was a bit of a stinker and brought on his troubles himself). I also was amazed at how vividly the author described the birds preparing to fly south for the winter, and how the Rat couldn't understand having to uproot and change venues every year. In researching this book after I finished, I learned that the Disneyland ride, "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride," which was one of my favorite rides as a child, was inspired by this book (and the Toad character). I never knew that! Anyway, thank you for this awesome recommendation!

Thank you Miranda and Donna. As always an interesting discussion with insights and lovely comments from Comfort Book Club members. As you say The Wind in the Willows is for all ages. I saw it as a play with my parents and older sister when I was in my 20s and we all really enjoyed it.
Cannot help but notice the care you always take with seasonal flowers, beautiful mugs and everything else in your settings. I love how it complements the content of your videos. It makes it special but I would never take it for granted.

Lovely book chat - My grands (boys 7 & 5) liked the book - there is an ongoing discussion about who gets to be which character for Halloween.
My Dad read this to me, read it by my self, then read it to my boys and now my grands. As the boys & I read this I found my son lurking in the background to listen. We now have another generation of Wind in the Willows lovers. I plan to reread this soon thru adult eyes just for me.
Thank you both and Kenneth Grahame for this treat.

With Britain changing your time on a different day than here in Canada I miscalculated and missed the actual live - but just wanted to say that I am so glad you suggested this book. I enjoyed it more than I did as a child. Toad just exasperated me as a child and that’s about all I remembered about the book! Rereading it now, I so appreciated the descriptions particularly of their cozy homes. When Mole despaired about his “poor, cold little place” Rat enthused that it was a “capital little house …So Compact! So well planned!” .The edition I read had beautiful colourful illustrations - showing such scenes as the little members of the field mice choir all lined up on a bench at the table as they fell to “savoury comforts” after warming up with mulled ale. A very hygge scene.☺️

I am very much enjoying my return (after 55+ years) to Wind in the Willows (haven't quite finished it yet). The poetic prose is a delight and all the characters are brilliant in different ways. I just love all the descriptions of the homes and all the food! Thanks for this interesting discussion and thanks also to those members that took the time to send in voice messages, I do like hearing others' thoughts on the books we read. Thanks for including insights into Kenneth Grahame's life. I'm another one that will be seeking out his biography.

I’m still reading Wind in the Willows, that beautifully illustrated version you got last year. Like one of your callers, I realised I have never read the entire book before. I did enjoy the musical/play that National Theatre broadcast (for The Shows Must Go On You Tube channel which was active through the worst of the pandemic) I think in 2021. The writing is beautiful and so evocative. I’m reading slowly (a chapter a day) so I can fully enjoy this wonderful book. I want to get the version of the book illustrated by E. H. Shepard now. We have both thoroughly enjoyed the story and have had lots of conversations around the subjects that arose from it. Our favourite chapter was when mole got the scent of his home.
