  • Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is one of the craziest sandbox VR games there is. You can do whatever you want, with no direction, no limits, and no goals... but is that a good thing? If limits are so restrictive, then why do I get bored of H3VR in only a couple hours?

H3 is a game that doesn't pretend it's something it's not, it's a game meant to be a detailed simulation of gun mechanics. That's why there are so many variations of the same gun, because that's what gun nuts like me care about.
And it's why the game has maintained its fanbase and it's still so loved after all these years, because it's made by a dedicated dev who loves his game and is focused on maintaining its uber-specific purpose: making the most realistic gun mechanics in VR. People often talk about what H3 "needs", but the niche it fills clearly does it for enough people.
As you say, it's a sandbox where you make your own fun out of it, but I think it's also a game you have to know what you're getting into. If you're not already really into guns or want to learn them, then it's not surprising that it'll struggle holding one's attention for more than a couple sessions. But for those of us it does attract, we've been avidly playing it for years and follow it closely cause it's the only game that does what we're looking for.

it's also worth noting that having all 5 m16s gives the player more choice, want a nice full auto rifle with a carry handle? M16A1 will give you that, burst rifle with M203 underbarrel grenade launcher? M16A2, want a nice burst fire rifle, but still want your picatinny rails for your acog and/or laser? M16A4
Another thing to consider is the vibes, it's why we have so many suppressors, so you can pick one you like the look of.

Stocks, barrels, sights, trigger packs, the changes matter in real life and they exist in real life. Same with the MP5. Pretty sure theyre up to MP5A37 by this point. Cant forget the navy trigger packs on those things. And just wait until you find out every modern handgun is basically the same with the tilting barrel lockup.

pretty good review, i will say that for uber gun nut people variety is the spice of life, each one of those M16's is from a diff era of time and it's like a virtual museum where you can play with them all.
as for things to do, Mods, So many mods, there's a full coop mod and new game modes that support MP, including player models with hands and arms.
i've been playing a mod called supply raid with a friend where we spawn tarkov style in huge maps with nothing, loot and get gear with chest rigs and such included, return to a safehouse, unload gear and start again, Gun game mod is also fun testing knowledge of all the firearms.
But yes, i'll agree, vanilla needs more content, the creator is currently working on a massive map for take and hold with new enemy types and mechanics. but i'd like to see a pass to the old maps with more content added. maybe more game modes like king of the hill or a COD zombies style mode, they already exist as mods but official would be nice.

But H3 really just chases ever greater heights. Institution is amazing, and the gameplanner content that's coming up is a lot of in-built tools for mapmaking, in addition to the prop system from recent updates. You don't understand that this game isn't a game.
It's a gun simulator for gun nerds like myself.
Guns are our special interest, we don't get bored of them. They're our passion.
The game has a bunch of different variants of the same gun because that's what makes us gun nuts giddy.
H3VR isn't pretending to be a game either. It's an extremely precise and detailing gun simulator. That's what it CLAIMS to be, and that's what it IS.
So you can get bored of H3VR, that's fine. But it's not the game's fault. It's because you're playing a hyper-realistic simulation of something you don't have as your special interest. Of COURSE you're going to get bored.
I'm glad you still found a use for it, and enjoy blowing shit up for half an hour. But please don't say it's what H3VR is, or what its purpose is for. It's not.

  • @TresTrefusis
    @TresTrefusis 10 месяцев назад +8

I would argue that you missed the point of this hame entirely. H3 is not really a sandbox fame though it has sandbox elements in it. Its not even a game though itbhas gameplay elements in it. H3 is a gun simulator first and foremost.
There are all 5 vairants of M16 brcause eaxh variant handles differently, has different attachment options. For me, being a history nut and US Marine H3 is like a virtual museum where i can take the exibits out of their cases and see what they look like, seenhow they work, what the manual of arms is and as someone who doeant get to get out to the range much anymore it lets me have a bit of that experiencen at home.
If you love guns and could sit at the range for hours shooting paper H3 is mindblowing. If you play call of duty and thats the extent of your experience or interest in guns then its going to fall short because its a gun simulator. If youndont love guns and all the little nuances that make them different from one another you're not going to have as good a time with it.
That said it just got a brand new take and hold map that is pretty amazing if youre intonthe game side of things.

  • @OperatorVanta
    @OperatorVanta 9 месяцев назад +5

    I'd definitely recommend two things.
Try out the specific gameplay modes, Take and Hold (I did see some gameplay in this video but you seriously should definitely pay more attention to it. It also has three maps in total now, northest dakota, institution which houses a heap of unique areas and mechanics exclusive to it and the standard classic hallways) Return of the Rottweiners, The meatmas snow globe and the Winter Wasteland (Which admittedly, Northest Dakota is just a port of this map to the TNH system, but it still holds unique combat, unique enemy types and unique systems to it)
And then after that check out the EXTREMELY extensive modding community. Which houses heaps of new maps, modes, guns, tweaks and heaps of variety overall.
(Which also includes a variety of modular weapons and other such cool items)
Besides that. H3VR is definitely a gun nut's game. If you're not a gun nut at all or not really interested in guns at all it is 100% most definitely not a game you'll get lots and lots of hours out of.
Me on the other hand, I have 646 hours in H3VR so far and it is one of my most played games on Steam.
You really do just gotta figure out what you enjoy in H3VR. I love messing around with modded weapons, building modded loadouts and tinkering with my weapons endlessly and I've spent hours just spraying guns into a wall (I'm not kidding)
There's even multiplayer, and modes that support multiplayer in the modding scene.
Mods extend H3VR's life span to extremely large lengths imo and put it on the level of something like Garry's Mod in terms of sandboxxyness

    • @OperatorVanta
      @OperatorVanta 9 месяцев назад

On top of that. Take and Hold has a very lively competitive scene and scoring systems and multiple different characters with different progression.
There's a lot more to this game than what you can see on the surface.
Sure, most of the scenes are just simple sandbox scenes that basically are different flavors of the same thing. But there are loads of combat, gameplay and skill based modes in the game that can actually prove difficult

so... this video is a 7 minute long explanation to say that the sandbox gun simulator... is a sandbox gun simulator. what exactly were you thinking making this video? there is no revelation, or even an interesting personal insight, you literally just described what playing a sandbox game is like as if you had never heard of the existence of one. "it's not supposed to have some elegant story or crazy progression" ????? it's literally a sandbox game? from the steam description: "if you like ordnance, meat, and far too many groan-worthy puns, this is the VR sandbox game for you." top steam tag: "sandbox"
are you gonna criticize garry's mod for having no story or progression? and before you say "well garry's mod is community driven" you made no mention of the massive modding community for this game.
that's not even addressing the fact that it isn't even a pure sandbox with nothing to do.
did you miss the zombie apocalypse simulator with a story and progression? did you miss the horror maze gamemode? did you miss the tactical shooter mode with objectives and progression, (granted only game to game) and multiple maps? how about the literal fucking TF2 gamemode? and the Westworld knock off puzzle gamemode? the christmas colosseum and other unique holdiay gamemodes? are those just new coats of paint to you? they are all very distinct with unique mechanics and gameplay.
it seems like you just skimmed over most of the game and just said it was a sandbox with nothing to do. I saw a few take and hold clips that were not longer than a few seconds, a little bit of boomskee, but the rest of it was just the literal tutorial area, the gunnasium and a few sandbox levels. not to mention t&h just got a massive overhaul with a huge new brutalist map, new enemies and gameplay elements, and more.
not to mention the constant new weapons and mechanics that keep the game fresh.
please explain to me how that is "just target practice and shooting the same thing over and over and over again."
I came to this video expecting something interesting, like maybe a discussion of how H3's unique personality and constant humor, along with it's highly dynamic and replayable gamemodes and consistent new content keeps it interesting and maybe a comparison to other sandbox games that have legitimately nothing to do, and maybe an analysis of what actually makes a sandbox fun, and whether or not you can really have a "true sandbox" and have it still be enjoyable; where the line between being a sandbox and being a structured game is. there's a video idea. but instead I get "sandbox games aren't rpgs and they aren't fun if you want an rpg, but if you expect a sandbox experience then it's fun."

At the time of writing this, I have one thousand, four hundred and sixty three hours, and 27 minutes, in H3VR.
Why do I have that many hours in this game? There are a few answers.
Firstly, like it's been said before, it's a gun fan's game, and I'm a fan of guns. I care and like all of the different models, their idiosyncrasies, their history, their uses.
I enjoy creating little loadouts for myself, and then trying to run them in Take and hold. I enjoy sitting in the range for a few hours, practicing shooting, plinking, general hanging out, while listening to music or youtube as I play.
That's what it's meant to be. A virtual range.
Secondly, I have mods. Lots, and lots, and lots, of mods. Mods that add new game modes, mods that add new guns, mods that add new game mechanics, new features, new..everything. Hell, there's even a Multiplayer mod. Not just one, but TWO kinds of multiplayer. There's even a mod that adds in small things like a shotclock for doing timed runs, there's a mod that adds new targets for one to shoot.
H3VR isn't a video game in the traditional sense of a video game: With a story or a narrative that has a definite ending. It doesn't have oppositional multiplayer(By default. There is a mod...). I'd even hazard not to call it a game at all. Cause it's not.
It's a range simulator. It always has been a range simulator. And if range simulators aren't your thing, this game will never hold your attention for very long.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Edit: The game is also 20 dollars, and for 20 hours for a game I have more than two MONTHS of play time, is a hell of a deal.

The almost weekly updates always get me interested and sometimes make me want to boot it up right away, nonetheless the longer you don't play, the more you can check out the next time so its always a win win.
Take and hold is the most replayable imo, its got a few fun settings and the characters can be challenging, the most fun about it is the challenge and exercise you get from it.

speak for yourself, H3 is sitting at 379 hours in my library and by far my most played VR title, with the second being VTOL VR at 200 hours.
There's a ton of content and a lot of stuff to do, but it's a game for gun nuts and if you're not a gun nut you will feel it.
I physically cringed when you complained about all the M16 or MP5 variants. Do we really need them? Yes, yes we do cause the game is a virtual gun simulator, and that's the entire point of it. If you don't like guns a lot, you're pretty unlikely to deeply enjoy H3.

As much as I love it, H3VR is for gun nerds first and foremost. I can dump hours and hours into it at a time because I personally love firearms way too much, but to someone who isnt? Yeah, its going to be boring. If you dont care about the history of the M16 then you wont care about all of the realistically portrayed variants in the game.

Coming back to this video, I really take issue with the framing of it. It seems like you're not looking at the perspective of what this game is supposed to be, a simulation of firearms both modern and historical and building scenarios around that.
To compare this game to others like HLA or others, simply because they have guns, feels frankly somewhat asenine since these are very different games.
Having a ton of the same firearms makes complete sense for H3 because it's a simulation of firearms, it wants to have as large a roster because part of the fun, especially for gun nuts like me, is getting to experience all the small differences between variations of a gun and getting to use firearms that are rare or very expensive.
Also, I don't feel like you actually gave much of a fair shake to the different modes. Yes, much of the game is a sandbox, but it has a much of more objective driven modes like Rotweiners and especially Take & Hold. It feels wrong to describe H3 as a sandbox and nothing more.
Sorry if this felt like I was ranting at you, but coming back to this video, there were just aspects of it that bugged me, coming from a long time H3 player

The thing is: VR isn't meant to be a long play-session, it's actually somewhat bad for you. H3VR is a perfect way to ration your play-time in a sense. A lot of other VR games actually suffer from this same thing. Pavlov is just shooting bad people, B&S is just stabbing bad people. H3VR fits into a small category of games, not many games want to just be a simulation.

I've played H3VR for ~500 hours by now, and >90% of that is in Take and Hold. I'm not a big fan of the sandbox maps, but the roguelike mode never got old for me, especially with mods. I do some occasional sniping in the open range, and when new updates bring new guns, I try those out as well, but the real meat (pun intended) of the game for me is definitely TnH.

I think this is the best description of what a sandbox game is.
The game is there to display a concept, feature or mechanic that has been finely tuned (or in this case perfected) and to offer a fun and novel experience. After a couple hours, it will leave you thinking "Well that was really cool and interesting' and that's all there is to it.
Then again, that *unique* experience that the game offers is what brings you back to it down the line.

RUclipsr discovers that real life guns are all just variations of the same bullet, propellant and shell system
Like, if you wanna find out the difference between those 5 assault rifles, play Take and Hold on Ricky Random- It'll force you to roll for guns that you have no say over, and deal with it.
Hoping for a good automatic pistol? Whoops! You got some super crazy obscure revolver instead, either cope or reroll. Were you hoping for a standard assault rifle? Heres the Demoman's sticky launcher instead, figure it out.
If you can't make your own fun, leave it up to fate and roll the dice in TnH, or play Return of the Rotwieners which HAS progression and wide open maps, as well as forcing you to really savor each and every weird gun you get.

I've been playing H3VR since late 2018-early 2019, I can't truly remember, but regardless I fully agree with everything you've said in this video, aside from the weapon variations thing, but that comes down to me being on the Spectrum and having Guns as a special interest, as well as being British, so I don't have easy access to guns.
An amazing game, proper gun simulator, and just generally fantastic shit, but with absolutely nothing to do aside from Take and Hold and some misc gamemodes that get old fast. (As an aside, I'm a massive baby-bitch, so I've never stepped into The Meat Grinder.) The most fun I have every year with H3VR is Meatmas. A fun map, unique ideas, goofy music, and shittons of guns.
I do wish that there was more to do, but at the moment, especially due to the price, it's completely acceptable. Even better with the new T&H map coming soon.
P.S. Your videos rock, and I've been watching for a while, loving each step.

This is the game that I load after a session of beat saber to cool down, have a round of holdoff and go to bed.
And you're not wrong to think it's silly to have so many variations of MP5, but I'm sure there're gun nerds out there that just cream their pants when they see that many.

  • @TheSwordofFlames

It’s extremely important to know going into it that it’s a sandbox firearm simulator first, and a game second. Yes, it has gamemodes, but they’re just meant to just be fun little things to do with the intricate systems that the game uses for it’s gun mechanics. Rotweiners, T&H, Boomskee, the Meatmas Cappocoloseum, they’re all fun, yes, but they’re not the main focus of the game. It really is tailored to the gun enthusiasts who like just booting up the game to shoot some targets, because they probably do that in real life for fun too. It’s basically just BeamNG, but for guns instead of cars. If you’re not into the specific thing the game’s simulating, you just might not find it as enjoyable as people who are.

This video is a little confusing. The title made it sound like you were going to talk about improvements and additions that the developer included in updates, or how it is a great game to play when you are bored and need something to do. I love this game. I have played it for multiple hours a day, everyday since I bought it, and I think it will be my game of choice until VR has evolved beyond what we have; that they need to make a new version to keep up. I live in Australia and am a firearm deprived person. I have loved "guns" since I was a kid, being able to identify different ones and their features. My dad was going to get me an air rifle for my 16th birthday, but the Port Arthur massacre put a stop to that, with new gun laws saying you needed a licence to own one. Forward to this year where I found out about this game from a video and my life has changed for the better. I am able to live out my gunpowder filled dreams with incredibly detailed firearms that function as their real counter parts do. You can even use a Dardick (a pistol I have always wanted to use) that loads a revolver mechanism from an internal magazine, that you use a stripper clip to load proprietary "trounds". There's over 600 firearms to use and I am going to go through them all, shooting at targets and human sized sangers while listening to the hilarious last words. Just to answer as to why all versions of firearms are added to the game, is like a shoe store only stocking a single pair of Nikes, instead of offering to sell the entire range. People have their preferences of firearm models, I prefer the MP5SD5 to the MP5SD6, the original Lee Enfield to the Jungle Carbine but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try the other ones, and you know the old adage; "It's better to have something and not need it, then to need something and not have it"... :)

I just found out about it but it sounds like it was made to be a realistic gun simulator. Over five hundred guns that are realistic in operation and parts is amazing! Also has scopes, sights, and red dots! Hopefully it lets you break the guns down and reassemble them and adjust optics. If you want a fps there's a bazillion to choose from. If you want a realistic gun simulation tool this might be the only one. The shooting can't be that helpful of a tool compared to the real life equivalent but the operation and mechanical breakdown of the weapons alone is worth it to me.

Ngl, even though I agree that H3VR is both meant to purely be a gun sim and that it can get boring quickly.
Weirdly enough I actually think the game mode return of the rottweiners is the best scene of this game next to take and hold. for both being a sandbox but also giving you shit to do in an open world adventure.

For someone like myself who has around 900 hours in the game, the “value” of the game over time is the fact that I have a lot of reasons to not want to spend hundreds of dollars to consistently go to a shooting range and practice. I grew up around firearms and am into the engineering behind a lot of them but I don’t think I’d fit in around the majority of “gun guys” who treat shooting like test driving an exotic car. I will always come back to this game because I don’t wanna go through the hassle and pain of handling firearms. I mean have you ever loaded a magazine in the cold?? Your fingers start to hurt immediately and two mags isn’t worth getting a gun out and cleaning it. I’d much rather have an interactive game where I can actually treat a gun like a toy and not have to worry about the cost or safety. With an irl gun you can’t EVER treat it like a toy or you risk death, in h3vrs take and hold, after a while it makes tactical sense to shove my revolver in my eye to psychically count how many shots I have left

*And it does that job very well.*
a *big* thing to bear in mind, is that the guns come first. This isn't a game designed to be a COD style PVE, its a gun simulator and a sandbox that prides itself on its advanced weapons.
