Graeme really seems to go very deeply into his research. I’m impressed with his pronunciation of Arabic letters as well which he would have had no reason to do except to be as studious as possible. Living here, he also has a very good knowledge of the desire of the people. Really excellent interview

It's amazing to me how people focus on stuff like "he imprisoned this activist" or "he killed this journalist" or whatever; _he's a tyrannical autocrat._ Every single person living in Saudi Arabia is having their human rights abused every second of every day, on every possible level. The scope of his crimes against humanity can't be fully tallied.
People understand this whenever they think about Louis XVI or George III, but when we talk about MBS people's brain just switch off and they can't make the obvious comparison.

I was expecting this to be a lot more nuanced and go a lot more in depth into Saudi Arabia. Clearly both men have a good understanding of Geopolitics and the major themes currently in the Middle East, but there's no shortage of discussion and information on that. There is little to no in depth and objective discussion about what MBS is doing and what is really happening in the Kingdom. Yes there is an abundance of criticism, but that is nothing more than low hanging fruit in the journalists' garden.

One thing I came across recently was the plan for a new type of city. I think it was called Neom, and it is being built in the north west of Saudi Arabia. It is a new concept of a linear city. As I researched this, at least the basic ideas sound fascinating. If we look at how cities have been built throughout history they always center around the older historic parts in a radial plan, or they are gridded out like NYC, but when you think of what our technological expertise is and what is needed in the future, mass transit that can get you somewhere fast, efficiently and carbon-free, this linear model really works. Seems like it would be great also for the environment where you could have pass-throughs, pass-overs, or pass-unders for wildlife to move though instead of what we have today which is giant scars on the land. Saudi Arabis is the last country on the planet I'd like to see develop the lifestyle of the future, but from what I read, this is a fascinating concept ... and it is one being developed by MBS, damn his murderous soul.

Interesting but you can rarely remake the wheel. I’d be curious what urban planners have to say about that, and by all means, try that shit out. Not like there’s anyone to hold him accountable if it’s a giant waste of money.
Then again, the reason cities are built like that is generally because they are formed over long periods of time, not planned out. Though, I don’t how easy it is to artificially construct a city from scratch, considering there are major housing issues in many cities by resulting from their high concentration of opportunity. If you can spread out opportunity, many of those housing issues disappear.
China I imagine has made similar types of top-down cities.

    • @88os88
      @88os88 2 года назад

Yes 100% sustainable however you’d like to define that, the plans are quite extraordinary. I don’t know if they’ll get it done in time. Though it is all quite possible with the openness they have to western know-how and integration. “The Line” is this project you’re referring to I believe. One of a few satellite projects to NEOM. A floating city and ski resort are two new additions to the concept. Thanks for the insight in your comment.

Cities become just massive scars over the land where nothing can pass through and nothing to survive. They do not scale, just get bigger and worse. That was acceptable because there was no way to get from A to B in the past. First it was walking, then horses, then carriages, then cars, buses, etc. Now we have trains and monorails, and tubes and what not and they can just grow from both ends, even at a more predictable rate. It's like when cities grew up, but that could be done without blocking light. Intuitively I like the idea. Hopefully the Saudis can do it right.

But it cannot be a coincidence that wherever there is oil, these companies or the democratic world does not seem to allow democracy to take root. I am more than startled that Sam considers a transition from oil to be possible much less a good idea. He really needs to have a serious conversation with someone in the industry.

A transition from oil is both possible and necessary, the only question is one of timeline.

Understand the scale of what you think you can replace. 90% of international trade is maritime and those vessels all use fossil fuels. Do you have an electric vehicle? A great number of the parts made to build it are from fossil fuels. Of course the road is made of asphalt another petroleum product. So when you charge it up (likely with energy produced by fossil fuels) and drive it to grocery store?
Nitrogen based fertilizer is made from fossil fuels as are those based on potash. If there's a pharmacy the prescription you pick up on the way out is likely to contain.....

When is a fuzzy question the best we can answer is "a long way off". Every prediction of 'peak oil' has been so laughably wrong that nobody bothers to make them anymore to avoid the eventual embarrassment.
Domestic producers are required to make 50 year assessments. Since reporting more than 50 is basically giving intellectual property to your competitors everyone reports 50.
Realistically domestic production did not rise due to reserves. It rose due to technology. Advancements in lateral drilling, 4D seismic sonar, etc. We got really good at finding precisely the molecules we wanted and then getting to that location.
There's also demand destruction. For instance dual cycle reactors create more KwH per BCM so you get more power from less gas etc.

This podcast seemed overly biased, IMO. Not surprising given Sam's visceral hatred of anything Muslim. To start by discussing MBS's health condition seemed to be a cheap shot. I was much more interested in the actual conversation with the crown prince and the policies he's enacted. Given the fact that Graeme is Asian, I wonder if he has anything worthwhile to say about the Rohingya genocide or the Uyghur concentration camps. I doubt it.
I'm actually a paid subscriber of Sam's podcasts. And I have listened to a lot of his content. The thing I find striking is the near total lack of diversity in the guests he invites to his podcasts. I see very few African American or Mexican American intellectuals. They're almost ALL white like him. And the Muslims he speaks with are almost always discussing the topic of radical Islam. Has he ever looked at the tenets of Sufism which are remarkably similar to the Buddhism he seems to love so much? In fact, he hasn't even invited many Asian Buddhists to his podcasts. Nearly all the speakers on Buddhism on his podcasts are white. Sam, word of advice: try to get more global perspectives in your content if you can.
