  • Sam Harris speaks to Bill Maher about the state of the world. They discuss the aftermath of October 7th, the cowardice and confusion of many celebrities, gender apartheid, the failures of the Biden campaign, Bill’s relationship to his audience, the differences between the left and right, Megyn Kelly, loss of confidence in the media, expectations for the 2024 election, the security concerns of old-school Republicans, the prospect of a second Trump term, totalitarian regimes, functioning under medical uncertainty, Bill’s plan to stop doing stand-up (maybe), looking back on his career, his experience of fame, Jerry Seinfeld, and other topics.
Bill Maher has been on TV for 30 years. His new book What This Comedian Said Will Shock You reached number one on the NYT bestseller list. Watch his podcast Club Random on RUclips or listen everywhere.

Yeah, it’s almost _dare-i-say_ archaic, in the sense that Bill was already way ahead of his time, and he grew up in a time when ‘irl audiences’ added a required sense authenticity. But once everybody learned that it’s fake, the authenticity is in the other direction and crowds are seen as unnecessary suckups when there’s a major panel discussion.
It’s like ‘laugh tracks’: maher already didn’t need them, so he should consider treating ‘irl crowds’ like that. Not always but maher doesn’t have to cling to it, the 90s are very over with that format

Maher is the one who is ignorant of the history of the Middle East. On his show he spoke all of the classic ‘talking points’- his staff came up with what they thought was a clever, shallow narrative with a map and he thought it so clever.
It illustrated how little he knows of the history of the Middle East.
His ‘talk show’ may be a small notch above the show ‘The View’ -
Don’t lazily rely on these shows.

Very amusing when Maher said "we are old school liberals" unironically yes, that's the problem, old slave owning oligarchs were also literally "old school liberals" too. Liberalism certainly was more progressive than monarchism and worshiping royal bloodlines, but its roots are also in elitist oligarchs exploiting the planet through colonialism and imperialism. So it's really really clear what kind of "old school liberals" Maher and Harris really are... and it really puts into perspective why they are so upset at young people and the educational institutions moving on from that antiquated nonsense. what is "Liberal" Progressive" "Conservative" is always on a moving spectrum as time goes on. What was very progressive for 1700 or 1800 can be widely believed by conservatives today. So lets call a spade a spade, a "old school liberal", is just a evasive way of saying conservative today in 2024.

Defending an ethnostate's ongoing genocide is beyond the pale. I'm sure they're both getting very well compensated by aipac. Remember that Sam also advocated for muslim looking people to be profiled by tsa.
"old school liberals" is funny if you actually consider that liberalism is a right wing movement. If they're going by that definition it really starts to make sense. Pretending to be centrists, all whilst smuggling in authoritarian alt-right ideals.

If there is anyone here who is smug, it is the believers like yourself who know with a certainty that there is a god who pulls levers and who sends the nonbeliever to hell. Belief without any evidence is smug. Certainty in this way is smug.
I used to be a believer...sort of....many years ago (I was raised Catholic). And paying attention to life chipped away at the doctrinal beliefs imposed on me. I had no choice in the matter whatsoever in whether I wanted religion. My relative certainty, such as it was, gave way to reason and doubt became non-belief.

In particular, it’s maddening that he keeps spouting such misinformation : that Palestinians don’t support Hamas. Indeed, their support for Hamas increased dramatically after Oct 7 and is now at about 80%. (He is confusing Palestinians with Persians in Iran).
In addition, he’s said previously that Muslim women are forced to wear the hijab. This is true for many of them, again, for many in Iran. However, plenty of Muslim women are even more radical than the men. In Europe, many admonish their husbands when they begin to think about integrating or becoming even a bit moderate.
Many Muslim women feel themselves better than western women, whom they see as whores, especially next to their own virtuousness. They hide their hair and face in order to save themselves for their husbands, so their husbands are guilted into not modernising/integrating.
Two thirds of British Muslim women recently polled believe that wives should always listen to their husbands.

@@HIJK_LMNOP nope, you are wrong. In his essay “The riddle of the Gun” he says, “Unarmed people can be trained to respond intelligently to violent emergencies, and the appropriate drills seem well worth doing. (If you watch the linked video, you will see that rather than simply terrifying students, these drills can be fun and empowering.) Of course, there are no guarantees when tackling a man with a gun, and training of this kind makes sense only for students above a certain age. But such “active shooter” drills, if widely taught, would probably reduce the threat of mass killings.”
From memory, in his podcast he again says teaching children to attack a gunman is a solution to school shootings. In his podcast he doesn’t state age of teaching (though I note he says “certain age” here).
But let’s take him at face value and give him the benefit of the doubt and say he meant 15+/16+ age range - senior school kids.
Are you telling me the answer to school violence is teaching kids to mass attack a gunman? That is mental. No serious common sense person believes running toward an active shooter is a good idea.

Something I really appreciate about Bill is how he says, "We're still friends" and "I really like this person", referring to connections with people who oppose him on political views. That is actually so good.

Day 251 of waiting for Sam Harris to talk to someone who knows the history well and can represent the Palestinian side. Let me make a few suggestions:
    -Rashid Khalidi
    -Omar Baddar
    -Marc Lamont Hill
    -Scott Horton
    -Dave Smith
    -Cenk Uyger
Will we ever get a conversation that’s fair and gives an honest representation of both sides? Or do we just want to live in an echo chamber? This is sad to me that we haven’t had that on this podcast.

Well, the last time Sam engaged with Cenk Uyger, he was dragged through the mud and bombarded with lies, the sort of lies which endangered Sam's life and that of his family. Hopefully some of the others you listed are more ethical. If so, then I too would like to see such a conversation.
