  • In this episode of the podcast, Sam Harris speaks with Oliver Burkeman about our relationship to time. They discuss the perils of efficiency, being vs becoming, the illusion of time as a resource, parenting and childhood, work-life balance, the loss of leisure, the planning trap, social isolation, a modern Sabbath, and other topics.
Oliver Burkeman is the author of the New York Times bestseller Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, about embracing limitation and finally getting round to what counts, along with The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking and Help! How to Become Slightly Happier and Get a Bit More Done. For many years he wrote a popular column on psychology for the Guardian, 'This Column Will Change Your Life', and has reported from London, New York, and Washington, DC. In his email newsletter, The Imperfectionist, he writes about productivity, mortality, and building a meaningful life in an age of distraction.

I'm working 6 days a week and never find the time to do the things I love, I have a hobby and so many ideas but I get frustrated because I don't get any free time to work on projects. Yet I hear people getting bored because they have loads of free time yet don't have any interests.

Why the hell do you spend the majority of your life doing something you don't enjoy? I mean, unless it's absolute necessity, it just seems like a waste of life.
I quit my job at 32 and it's the best thing I ever did. It did take several years of preparation to start my own business, but I realized early on that 9/5 wage slaving was not my thing.
I mean think about it.. you live once, and you spend your days doing things you hate or dislike? Break free already.

I get the imrpession that it mostly depends on people's emphasis. Maybe family was the most important element in your life, which is a noble persuit. Maybe it was the happiness of your wife, your children etc.
Ultimately, the so called 'success' of your life depends on the goals that you have set for yourself and the degree to which you've managed to realize them, regardless of other people's opinions.

For a few years I ended up following my passion full time. One result was my "other" RUclips channel (not "MrTwostring"). I did OK financially - but I eventually took a "regular job" that paid better. Much of what Sam said about "work and pleasures being indistinguishable" resonated with me - but he didn't get to the detail that really weighed on me - and that was this. Since my hobby became my work, I no longer had any hobbies.
I do want to get back to "following my passion" when I'm ready for early retirement, but I'm going to try to carry some lessons learned with me - and that will include making sure I have time for hobbies - or as they called it here - leisure.

Why are emails being treated as automatically efficient? They're not. A programmer spending 0% of their time coding (because they're spending it all emailing) doesn't achieve their goal, and _efficiency is about using the least resources (time, etc) to achieve a goal._
So the first bit of this conversation focusing on clearing an email queue _isn't avoiding efficiency._ Instead the person is being _more_ efficient by using less effort to achieve the desired outcome. It was super weird to imply there's this intrinsic efficiency to emails. Don't get me wrong: communication is crazy valuable to nearly all collaborative projects, but if collaborators spend all their time emailing then nothing meaningful gets done.
