I met Nick Menza (the drummer) in a small bar in Tokyo when I was stationed there in 1996. I mentioned I saw them in 91 in Philly at the Clash of the Titans tour supporting this album. I offered to buy him a beer, and he bought a round for everyone (5 of us), but he didn't partake. Super nice dude, RIP Nick.

The important thing to note with this song is this is the first track off Megadeth's 4th album Rust In Peace. The previous 3 albums the band, and Dave Mustaine in particular, were on literally EVERYTHING: Alcohol, Weed, LDS, Heroin, Meth, and even Crack Cocaine. They were just obliterated around the clock for years. This was the first time Megadeth made an album completely clean and sober and had a major line up change by swapping out previous members for the amazing Marty Friedman on guitar and the late, great Nick Menza on drums. But the press and some fans were like "Does Megadeth still have it? Or will they be another band who could only make great music while on drugs?"
The first 10 seconds of this song made the statement that not only did they still have it, but they were just warming up and they haven't stopped since.

When Dave Mustaine was the lead guitarist of Metallica in 1982/ '83, he was really not interested in doing lead vocals... But when he was fired and formed Megadeth in late '83, he couldn't find a vocalist in L.A. to match the intensity of his music... so, he just took over on vocals.
Mustaine's style took cues from shock rocker Alice Cooper ( who would later become his godfather) and vocalist Johnny Rotten of UK punk rockers The Sex Pistols... Unlike Metallica, which was a cross between Motorhead and Diamond Head... Megadeth was pristine and technical like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest...

Got to see them again in 2010 for the 20th anniversary tour of this album where they played it from start to finish. This is the first song on the album, and at the end of the show they did a reprise of the end of this song from Dave's (vocalist) solo through the end of the song. Hearing the whole album live was special too.

6:31 - Actually it was about the insurgency of the Irish Republican Army force that sought to end British rule in Northern Ireland, facilitate Irish reunification, which had conflicts between the Catholics and Protestants. By the time the video came out, it was focused on the Operation Desert Storm, hence the Middle East imagery.

Very applicable to current affairs. Right before Dave gives us the first “Holy Wars” line, he says “Don’t look now to Israel, it might be your homeland.”
That region has been the epicenter for holy wars for far too long. It’s not just between Arabic and Israeli groups, but it goes back and includes much older groups like the Byzantine empire and the Persian Sassanid Empire.

I love these guys and still do. It's very nostalgic to me. It takes me back in my mind and I enjoy being lost in the great memories of growing up in that era. 2 Songs in one really. Dave said that he was inspired to write the song in Northern Ireland, when he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale and was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fundraising activities for "The Cause" (i.e. the Provisional Irish Republican Army). "The Punishment Due" is based on the Marvel comic book character, the Punisher.

I had already listened to this song several times and I understand that the theme behind it is a very heavy theme Rachael but honestly there is something you said in the middle of the react video that honestly people really don't respect and I already understood this a long time ago ''love your neighbor as yourself'' is actually a good value to follow but honestly today people have little or no respect for each other's beliefs, but the message of the song is very clear and I really like her riffs and Dave Mustaine's voice is a very good voice and so is the song itself, now talking about recommendations I recommend Laura Braingan - Self Control, it's a good song and I think you'll like it and what's more That's it, continue with the work you're doing and greetings from Brazil to you Rachael! 💚💛💚💛

"Love thy neighbour as yourself" comes from the old testament and here "neighbour" actually means kinsman so the origins of that saying is rooted in something just as tribalistic as holy wars. It meant that those of god's chosen people should not fight amongst themselves. Meanwhile other passages from the same text talks about chasing other people out of the holy land and how to treat slaves taken from them etc

Not to mention God instructing his people to cut babies from their mothers womb, and slaughtering every living creature. Not exactly the "peace and love" doctrine...

The first half of the song is about the never ending middle east conflicts. The second half is about the Punisher comic book. It's basically two different songs mashed together. But it works.

Holy Wars was based upon the religious conflicts in Ireland that were happening around that time of the late 80s/early 90s.
The Punishment Due... well it's based upon Marvel Comic's The Punisher.

Not religious conflicts in the slightest I'm Irish from Belfast, grew up during the troubles. Outsiders get confused because it's often referred to as Catholic Vs protestant but most people werent religious. Catholic represents the Irish who were oppressed under British rule and the troubles came about as a result of Irish attempts to gain equal rights and status and be allowed to keep Irish culture and tradition and language. Which we did thankfully through non violence (unlike Hamas) after years of ira ceasfire we signed the good Friday agreement and now today over 50% of the population considers themselves Irish and can be Irish citizens and practice our culture (and religion)

The lyrics deal with global religious conflict, particularly in Israel and Northern Ireland. In an interview with the UK magazine Guitarist, Dave Mustaine said that he was inspired to write the song in Northern Ireland, when he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale and was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fundraising activities for "The Cause" (i.e. the Provisional Irish Republican Army).Dave who was high on heroin at the time went on stage at the Antrim forum and dedicated a sing to the cause and shouted keep ireland for the Irish which caused a riot in the crowd because there were people from both sides of the conflict at it..Megadeth were then escorted out of Northern Ireland under a heavy British military convoy

i love the band and their talents (i can play most of the guitar parts but have no idea how Mustaine plays while singing these intricate riffs). Nonetheless, people don't kill each other over religion, it is over land, wealth, and resources, and it is usually a powerful imperialist/empire seeking to extract resources (oil, uranium, diamonds) at low prices using coercion. "Religion" "Terror" "Democracy" may be used as a pretext, but the reality of modern statecraft. That being said, I highly recommend this album and respect the humanitarian analysis the youtuber gave on the myriad topics brought out by Mustaine's lyrics.
