@@saturnracer156 I have seen a few reactors comment on it but it happens rarely. Some you can see them stop the video a few seconds before it so they don’t even see it.
Trent said that this is johnnys song now, and that has to be one of the best compliments you can get from someone for doing a cover, btw that was June in the video, they had both passed away soon after this video was released, I also remember hearing an interview with one of his kids and when they listened to it they said ‘dad it sounds like you’re saying good bye’ he said ‘i am’
I read that Trent Reznor heard Johnny Cash's version and didn't think much of it but when he watched the video, that's when it hit him and when he said that this is his song now.
The making of the video is amazing, HOW it was made. Johnny couldn't really leave the house, they only had a couple of days, so they filmed him at his house. Then they found a box of old footage and asked to us that. His wife didn't even know they were filming and she came down the stairs, they asked if they could film her there and she agreed.
The closing of the lid is the most emotion I have ever felt from a piano ,,,, and it was not even being played....it gets me...every...single...time....
she passed away after doing the video that was her standing there for that shot and Trent said after hearing this version he said it was Johnny;s song now which says alot, this was the last thing he recorded before he passed away so it makes it that more hard hitting
Johnny's cover is powerful and emotional, it's a reflection on a lifetime worth of mistakes and regrets while the original NiN version is about the regrets from one mistake.
I rewatched this video recently (the first time I watched it since it was released) and ugly cried by the end. I then showed it to my 76 year old country music loving father, and he was trying not to cry by the end as well. Cash's version (especially the video) just hits hard.
Trend said that once Johnny did, this song wasn't his anymore when it was sent to him. He didn't know if he could do it anymore. Johnny also covered Soundgardens Rusted Cage.
Johnny Cash actually did a lot of covers like this, they're some of my favorite things to listen to from him. The Beatles, Sheryl Crow, The Eagles, Niel Diamond, Simon and Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Petty (a couple of times), Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Soundgarden, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, U2, and many, many more. He was so talented and made so much original music but he loved covering other people's songs as well. A true student of music. Great video and I had a strong urge to hug you by the end of it.
I found it really cool that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were actually the backing band on his “Unchained” album and Petty sang backup vocals on the covers of his own songs.
I was looking through the comments and was going to say much the same thing. I will just add that he also did covers of Jimmie Rogers "In The Jail House Now" and Hank Snow "I've Been Everywhere". I'm sure we've barely scratched the surface of his songs.
This was from American IV, the 4th of 5 albums of cover songs. I think the 5th album was released posthumously. Some other covers from that album include 'Bridge over Troubled Water' by Simon & Garfunkel, 'First Time I Saw Your Face' by Roberta Flack, 'Personal Jesus' by Depeche Mode, 'In My Life' by the Beatles, and 'Danny Boy', the traditional Irish folk song.
I'm 68, and Johnny is right near the front of the line in where musical artists came into my consciousness..There was Elvis, Johnny, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, then the Beatles, Stones, and it took off from there...Most of them were introduced to us via the Ed Sullivan Show..It surely was an amazing time for music, and a long time ago..Broke my heart when I first saw this video, but I also knew Johnny's path was not always an easy one.
It's funny because your video feed cut out at the end of the content playback, but having watched you for a while and I really enjoyed your comments at the end, just seeing pure black but hearing your voice in high fidelity gave it more of a poignant and heartfelt aspect. Love it.
When Johnny sang this song it came from his heart and years of struggling with addiction. He made this song his own!! R I.P. Johnny Cash!! 😪💔I miss your music and your presence here on this planet!!
I don't know how many times I've seen reactions to this but during yours I realized the end sums up the life of someone who doesn't love or value himself trying to show appreciation of those who loved him anyway, even with all his faults. Maybe Trent meant it that way as well, but the Cash history and perspective at the close of his career really drove it home.
I can't listen to this song without just crying my eyes out. He took a song that is a very different vibe from the NIN original version and just made it his own. Trent Reznor said that he dismissed it when he first heard it but when he was sent the video it kind of hit him and he grasped the weight of it. He's said since that its not his song anymore
As for covers, which are not rare at all, but what is rare is for artists of a previous generation and genre to do cover like this. It does show an uncommon respect for the material and original writer; especially one that around 60 years his junior.
A legend covered someone. And he did it because it fit his life so much. He heard it and couldn’t describe his life better with his own words so he used NIN’s words.
This is not only a beautiful and emotional cover...but as you touched on, it's an important lesson about music. The things you get, or don't get, from a piece of music aren't always going to be the same as someone else. The best music, is the music you like to listen to, the way you like to listen to it.
In the words of Mike Skinner from The Streets: "We came to this world with nothing, and we leave with nothing but love. Everything else is just borrowed."
I’ll always be grateful to Rick Rubin for convincing Johnny to do The American Recordings series. In an interview Johnny told about the first time they met. Rick was taking a nap on a couch, and Johnny thought maybe that’s the janitor or something like that.
I bought the CD before the video broke. My reaction to first hearing this track was, "HOLY SH!T!!!" Then, knowing the song before viewing this video, I was still floored by it. So powerful!
The video really hits when it ends with him closing the lid on the piano. Basically saying "the end" when you realize his wife died shortly after theis recording and he followed her not long after.
4:00 This old man has his Tissues i feel it soooo much thanks from a silly old 70 year ❤❤❤❤ another cool cove id Kasey Chambers country cover of emiems Lise yourself also avout a year after he sang this😢
With this video, which was also Johnny's last before he withdrew from music completely and unfortunately died in 2003, Johnny tried to reflect on his own life, in contrast to the original. It reflects the early days of his career, as well as its sometimes difficult course. The video also makes it clear that everything is temporary and that money and fame cannot replace health. This becomes particularly clear in the video when he, almost alone in an armchair, reflects on his life, while his wife June Carter Cash listens to him from the stairs and has to realize helplessly, almost pitifully, that the time to say goodbye will soon come . The last scene in the video is intended to symbolize the end. The end of saying goodbye to his fans as well as the end of earthly existence. He closes the coffin lid himself... Rest in Peace, great Man in Black. I am proud to have seen you live in 1982. I will always carry this gift in my heart...
If you hear Mr Johnny Cash sing this version of the song, and you do not get chills or tears... All I can say is I am sorry you never developed a feeling heart. Something about his raspiness just gives the song a whole new meaning.
When Rick Rubin suggested it, Johnny initially said he didn't think he could pull it off. Rick said, it's only going to be you and the acoustic guitar. I think the piano dirge was added in the studio.
Johnny didn't want to do this song, he said it wasn't his style. Trent (NIN) didn't want him to do this song, it was too personal for him. Johnny's manager pushed and pushed. Trent heard Johnny's version and said that it's Johnny's song now. He also said, "I was born to write this song....Johnny was born to sing it.".
Hurt - Johnny Cash The Sound Of Silence - Disturbed Lose Yourself - Kasey Chambers The original versions of all three songs have always held a strong significance and connection for me, and all from artists I seriously respect. She was still alive when he was recording this song. Neither of them were in good health at the time. Another song that I find haunting, because it came out shortly before he died. Johnny Cash has always covered songs by other artists; he was humble singer and a music fan... he related w/ the people who were downtrodden and kept down. He was always looking for songs to sing... and one of his early hits was 'Ring of fire' that was co-written by June Carter (before she became Johnny Cash's wife) ... and he also covered Bob Dylan's song "It ain't me babe" as a duet w/ June Carter. Because of his health, Johnny Cash could not tour after 1989... Def American producer Rick Rubin offered Johnny Cash a record contract and gave him full creative control - he released 'American recordings' in 1994 and continued to release new albums for the label which gave Cash a new fanbase... Cash covered 'Bird on the wire' (Leonard Cohen)... 'Rusty cage' (by Soundgarden)... 'Solitary man' (by Neil Diamond) ... 'Personal Jesus' (by Depeche Mode)... and so many others. R.I.P. His daughter Roseanne Cash recalled the couple inviting her to watch the clip together and it was emotional for her... June Carter soon passed away from her health issues and Johnny Cash died 3 months later...
When I left Iraq in late 2003, I was sitting at Rammstein Air Force Base in Germany waiting for my next flight to get home. I heard this song come on, and I said that sounds like Johnny Cash, and to my surprise it was. It was one of the most poignant songs I have ever heard and very befitting of the moment. It is a moment I will never forget.
I always love your reactions. This one the video of the song was not on at all, and after you paused and went back to listen again, the whole screen was blacked out. Didn’t see you at all the last half of the reaction. It’s a heartbreaking song. Thx for reacting!🙏🏼🌹💕
I was wondering about that. Does she edit her videos herself or does she film the reaction and has someone else editing it and putting it online? Maybe she doesn't even know!
Even Trent Reznor has said, this is Johnny Cash's song now. He died 7 months after recording this cover. This is an example of how the emotional "weight" of the vocalist means more than the quality of the voice. This was recorded in Feb 2023, June Carter (who was in the video) died in May 2023, then Johnny passed in Sept 2023.
DECADES before David, and Disturbed did "Sound of Silence". Johnny covered that too. I'd say it's about halfway between Disturbed and S&G. But DECADES BEFORE it's time. He seems to FORCE HIMSELF into his lower register, but STILL MUCH BETTER THAN S&G in my book. I think Johnny's version is what David modeled his "Disturbed" version after, and NOT the original. (I haven't heard anyone ask David directly. Why would they if THIS version was relatively UNKNOWN) David MAY have already said, but I haven't heard. But it's something you might want to check out. "Johnny Cash, Sound of Silence" from.... I ASSUME 1970 something.
When this came out on the radio I was in the car with my dad and he argued with me saying "you have it backwards, they probably covered Jonny Cash" I could argue anymore and just laughed. He also did a cover of Soundgarden Rust Cage that is pretty good.
Many people have done covers of other successful artists over the years, and like Johnny have made them their own..I'll name some. Johnny Winter, "Hi-way 61 Revisited" (Bob Dylan song), Jimi Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" (also Bob Dylan), Joe Cocker "A Little Help From My Friends" (Woodstock fame of a Beatles song), Gregg Allman "These Days" (Jackson Browne cover)..Whitney Houston "I will always Love You" (Dolly Parton cover) and many of the classic rock bands that covered old Black blues greats of the past songs, some making them their own, to an extent...So many others, really. Too many to name, but those are just a few..Nice reaction.
If you wanna check out some other noteworthy covers in the metal / rock space. 'Children of Bodom - Oops I did it Again' and 'Northern Kings - My Way' are two that always come to mind for me.
Another great cover song that Johnny Cash does is "The Mercy Seat" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. You'll likewise have two completely different experiences if you listen to both the Johnny Cash cover and the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds original. I'd recommend both of those, and then that introduces you to the "one of a kind" sound of Nick Cave.
Johnny’s American recordings are all stripped down covers, a lot of which you wouldn’t expect, but all worth listening to. More recently, Dolly Parton did an album of rock covers. Apparently there’s a story there about not being comfortable being in the Rock’n’roll Hall of Fame having not written a rock song. There are others out there.
As I'm sure you know, the video went blank in the last part of your reaction (2+ minutes), but the audio was fine. Speaking of fine, you are stunning !!! Enough of that ... great reaction and nice analysis.
@@rayactionsNP ... happy to help out. I know the process can be complicated at times and sh*t happens☹. I'll let you know if I see any other issues 😊👍.
He only did this because his daughter liked it and he was dying! It was definitely great. He did die only 4 months after his wife. They were married for 35 yrs and 2 months. Being married 26 yrs and I don’t think I could live without her. I can’t sleep if she is not next to me holding hands! WHEN YOUR WORLD ENDED LIKE HIS DID, I BET HE JUST DIED FROM A BROKEN HEART! I guess 2 months is how long that takes when your best friend and love of your live passes.
PLEASE do a Demon Hunter reaction for your next video! I'd like to see more of a variety on your channel. Maybe some lesser known acts or artists that aren't getting as much attention as all the trendy ones.
When Johnny played this for his daughter; she told him that it sounded like he was saying goodbye. His reply; I am...

@@Sadlander2I don’t think she checked it lol
When Trent heard Cash's version he said (I'm paraphrasing) "The song now belongs to Johnny."
a Legend, that says "Farewell" to his fans and the world...
As an older person, Johnny's version of this song cuts deep.
No amount of fame and money and recognition can shield one from pain sorrow and regret.
Johnny owns this song.
When the storytelling hits so hard that you forget that Johnny Cash is (also) singing.
Spot on i agree.
They died in 2003
Johnny Cash also did a cover of Rusty Cage by Soundgarden
I am incredibly grateful to Rick Rubin for inspiring Johnny Cash to perform this song. touches my emotions every time when you listen to it
DECADES before David, and Disturbed did "Sound of Silence".
“Damn.” Yeah. Sure enough. That fits the song and that fits the video.
Trent said this song will now always belong to Johnny Cash. He was moved by the way Johnny took it to a whole new place.
If you wanna check out some other noteworthy covers in the metal / rock space. 'Children of Bodom - Oops I did it Again' and 'Northern Kings - My Way' are two that always come to mind for me.
Prince covered more songs during his concerts than anyone else. He would promote the beauty of music over himself.
Love Johnny Cash - Hurt I think its better then NIN.
I didn't realize it uploaded like that! Nooo 😭😭😭 sorry! Thank you for letting me know
@@rayactionsNP ... happy to help out.
Another amazing cover is disturbed cover of .....simon and Garfunkes, sound of silence. It's night an day different too.
This is a great song. one of my favorites. But I can’t listen to it anymore because it was the song my cousin requested they played at his funeral
Beautiful
PLEASE do a Demon Hunter reaction for your next video!
I'd like to see more of a variety on your channel. Maybe some lesser known acts or artists that aren't getting as much attention as all the trendy ones.
That is June standing on the stairs.
Now you need to react to "Johnny Cash" by the band Wage War (yes, they have a song CALLED Johnny Cash. it's definitely worth it)
you really need to see the video version
The video is outstanding.
