Lumix S5 - Will it replace my Bmpcc4k?

Recorded with the bmpcc4k on a tripod.
Light used was a Amaran 60x, yet to get a softbox and use the LAV mic if this is gonna turn into a habit.
* Another thing I've learned in the field is that the S5 battery can be charged hooking a USB-c cable directly to the camera. The pocket 4k can't. Super handy to charge the S5 in the car USB output or with a powerbank between shooting.

I sold my BMpcc4K and got 2 Panasonic S5s and have never been happier. I will get the S5IIx soon. The Panasonic ergomnomics fit my style of filmmaking better.
Whatever tools are good if they fit your needs and solve your problems. 💪

Agreed on all counts! I took a 10-day trip recently and I had a long internal debate about which camera to bring. I took the S5 (and my BM Video Assist) and it was the right choice for that scenario. Glad I have it as a complement to my P4K.

If you want to shoot video and/or CINEMA (capital letters for a reason!) nothing, in their price range, beats the Blackmagic cameras...
Their video texture is truly CINEMATIC...
It's crazy they are so cheap for what they give...

For hybrid photo/ video and grab and shoot/ gun and run scenarios shooting my faves are Panasonic Lumixes of all kinds...
G/ GH series, S series...
But for pure video/ cinema, the Blackmagic is on another level.
You have to use it to believe it.
It is truly cinematic.

Bro, i have the same cameras for the same reasons. Both are good and the colors match easily. A great combination. And yes, i also live in Sweden. 😜
Million dollar question : what is it about the BlackMagic image that makes it so ridiculously gorgeous and has anyone (they haven't ) figured out a way to recreate those characteristics as a LUT (or other sane tweak) for other cameras? I see tons of people talking about matching the footage but eh ... I've yet to see any convincing examples in the wild.
Check out Cinematch, there is some loss of quality depending what sensor and file-format you convert from but it works fine!
I think the P4K isn't as saturated with color as Panasonic camera's > Am I correct. Is easy to match in post?
Yeah, have to look at the consumer base both cameras are created for. The P4k comes with davinci and is aimed at colorists so the profile is very neutral. Lumix is more of a consumer base camera plug-play camera, thus the profiles already have some level of saturation. P4k is also 12 bit while S5 is 10 bit. Can be matched pretty well in post (check Cinematch or Color space Transform) but it depends how you put them next to eachother as they will not look exactly the same. Cheers :)

S5 dynamic range in your sunrise video is clearly superior to black magic. It has that full frame look. I use it with video assist to shoot braw.. 6k is just unbelievable....
I prefer the bmpcc look all days of the week tbh but the Lumix is super handy.

Not true about controlled environments, it’s perfectly fine for run and gun in every way.
I have a S1 and Cinema 6k and use both whenever I want.

i have the lumix s1 and for me is better than my blackmagic 4k in image quality

haha I thought the same about the my bmpcc6k and S5 but I tell what after all that time using both I have less issues taking my 6k to the shit places than S5 I dont know why but panasonic feel more fragile
Might depend on the build! I feel like the S5 is a little block with the cage and light-weight lenses. I've had it in a warzone for 2 month and it still works perfectly for my usecase.

You think you can match S5 color with bm4k? I agree with you about 4k’s color is juicer. But is it really worth choosing bmpcc over s5? 😬
I can't at least when I push the pockets look. But close enough to make them look good together.
It depends what type of content you want to film, if you can direct and control the scenes I'd pick a bmpcc. If you can't and you want to film more adventurous run and gun documentary type stuff I'd pick something like a S5. Cheers
