For the IBIS test, the FX30 is on the RIGHT* not the left! 🤦🏽‍♂️😂
Also, I did not take account the significant crop that happens in the fx30 at 4k 120, my apologies! Still, it does have it and the s5ii doesn’t but it will not be “consistent across frame rates” like I mentioned in the video.

    Great comparison Anthony!
As the guy who makes the Phantom LUTs I would just say that in regards to the green skin tones, a lot of that would be due to the reflections of the grass in the scene and also potentially the white balance of the particular camera. When I use a colour chart and properly white balance my S5ii and my Sony cameras the skin evens out, it's just that sometimes Sony cameras seem to have a green tint not necessarily in terms of skin tones but the entire image (a green tint bias) - but these things can often be rectified with a white balance adjustment toward magenta if need be for your particular scene.
Every camera sensor is different also (even within the same brand) and every Sony sensor will have their own quirks with WB and Tint (some more neutral/green/magenta/warm/cool) it's just the nature of CMOS sensors.

      Thanks!
Insight from the legend himself 😎
What I’ve noticed in some of these comparisons is that the way the sony sensor translates the greens over the Panasonic is also drastically different. A lot more saturated and yellow-ish, not unflattering imo, BUT I prefer the Lumix colors overall. Also, the fx30 specifically is known for having more of a green skew as opposed to others sensors like the fx3 or those in that price bracket.
These things can be easily corrected, ESPECIALLY w/ the phantoms!

Anthony, I just watched Dustin Armstrong's video on how to use the AF on the S5II. I tried his settings and in camera adjustments and the Panasonic was spot on and rock solid. My problems were I had the wrong settings. That makes me suspect you did as well. The settings are very different from the way the Sony Af works. And the Panasonic image and skin tones looked so much better than the Sony. So, the good news is I won't have to use the Sony for my corporate instructional videos. I really owe Dustin big time for setting me straight, and I wanted to correct what I posted earlier. I did have terrible trouble with the Panasonic--but it was all USER ERROR. Nothing wrong whatsoever with the S5II AF. It works perfectly, with no hunting whatsoever.

You've been quite a bit biased about the lumix in this video, dude. You didn't know much about the sony and its functions. Both cameras are great but this video is not a great review, the autofocus section shows the two cameras blurry, what happened, you couldn't get focus on both of these amazing cameras? Maybe it's the operator not the gear, sorry for the negative review, but it seems lousy.

    • @AnthonyRodriguezz

Definitely nothing in depth! Never said it was.
And yes I am a bit biased towards the s5ii and I mentioned that in the video, not trying to hide that. I prefer the s5ii as it’s literally a better camera in almost every aspect. I did give credit where credit was due towards the Sony but the fact that the s5ii is an overall better choice is not my problem
Nothing against negative feedback, I actually welcome it! But at least have the criticism make sense for what it is. The blurry part you’re talking about was the dynamic range part and the rest was literally the camera not doing well in that area, hence the name AUTO in autofocus.
Also, it’s hard to know all there is to know about a camera when I used it for maybe 2 hours total. I mention that at the end of the video when I shout out Geoff from reachfilms who will be giving a review from an experienced fx30 user unlike myself!

Both of these cameras are insane deals - my last camera was a canon 6d mk ii which debuted at $2k 5 years ago and maxed out at 1080p, had all kinds of janky shortcomings like all its AF points were in the middle of the frame, AF-C wasn't good, and of course nothing like eye detect/ibis/focus peaking/etc. Considering what you can get now for $2k is insane. I went with the Lumix s5ii because I'm definitely a stills-first shooter looking to get more into video and just wanted something utlra versatile and Lumix just packs tons of features in their cameras. No doubt the Sony would probably have served me just as well.

I sold an a7iv to get the s5ii. The only time I (kind of) regret it is when shooting stills. Everything else, I like the s5ii better. I also shoot with a gh6. When light is good (meaning I can stay around the base 2000 iso in vlog), I much prefer the gh6 video. S5ii blows the gh6 away for low light and stills though. It's a great combination to cover most scenarios. GH6 provides full sensor readout 4k 120p, which I use quite a bit for sports.

Hi Anthony, thank you for making this comparison video, it helps me a lot. I’ve been struggling with these two choices for weeks. One thing I’m concern about is ‘how well could they perform AF on MOVING HANDS only’.
I shoot piano performance videos (indoor, 4k24/30p mostly), with no face but only hands movement, and I’ve been using MF with GH5 or XT4 for lifetime. And I’m thinking about switching system to Panasonic or Sony recently. Do you have any personal suggestion on this?

      Very true!

    • @kevinforget549
      @kevinforget549 Год назад +1

A little? Try 1/3 the cost AND you get autofocus while you'd lose that by going with an ef lens. I've owned an s1 and I fell into the full frame trap when I didn't need it as every lens cost me well over $1000. You will spend 3x more on the same camera and lenses setup on the s52 vs fx30. For the vast majority of people shooting talking head, product shots, vlogging and travel, and documentary type footage the autofocus performance, smaller lenses and light weight reign supreme. Even for filmmaking having a wider range of lenses beats out a better sensor any day if the week.

I am still deciding between the two. I shoot a lot of slow motion. You forgot about the gyro stabilisation on FX30, after which the footage looks as good as shot on a gimbal which crushes the S5II's ibis, also the S5II has an apsc crop on 60fps and no 120 fps. Which camera has a sharper 1080 p 120 fps? I have heard the the autofocus on S5II does not work on 120 & 180 fps modes.

The AF of the S5II can't really approximate the Sony AF--which is amazing. And the XLR handle of the Sony produces excellent, clean audio with little fuss. It's better than the XLR unit for Panasonic.
For out and about hand held shooting the Panasonic is superior. The open gate 6k, IBIS, and all the video assist features, and the C4k make is truly superior for most hand held shooting. Colors are better and more natural, but for talking head shooting and product shots the S5II can touch the Sony, and that is what I need most. There the Sony is far superior and the AF of the S5II is, sad to say, an epic fail, and cannot be trusted.

So another question. After a quick browse of ReachFilms site, it looks like the Sigma 18-35 lens might have been a Cannon mount lens paired up with a Metabones Speed Booster on the Sony FX30 camera. If so, please how and why u used such a complicated setup. Why did u not use the relative new Sigma 18-50 f2.8 on the FX30 for the comparison tests? 😎😎

Comparing the Lumix S5 II to a FX30 is comparing a full frame mirrorless camera to a APS-C cinema camera thats designed to be built onto a rig with a external monitor and used to shoot movies. That includes yellow, blue, magenta & green and everything in between and almost every camera can do that… Sony doesn’t have a special sediment on customizing color.
