- DIY PART 3 - Building a roof for my Humvee.
This video documents me building the roof for my HMMWV.
This part is the conclusion to the 3 part series and in it, I show how I finish the struts and mount the roof, then bolt it in and then paint it.
Cost breakdown:
1. Aluminum roof panels - $550
2. Aluminum struts/pipe/rivets - $150
3. Paint (Rapco) - $30
4. Lip for front A Pillar - $100
5. F'k ton of my labor (of love) - $ LOL
-------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL - $830
I ordered the Roof panels from a local Steelworks company. Sent them my diagram and requirements. Race City Steel in Denver, NC They are awesome, I'd highly recommend them.

Very Informative, great diagrams 👍🤠
Best vid I've seen today, I need those specs to make my pwn!
Awesome Chris.... love the attention to fine details.... Thank you for sharing.
Nicely done my friend...She is really taking shape...very creative solutions...
It does my heart good to see someone modifying and personalizing a truck of my design. The hmmv. As well as the Abrams tank and the blast displacement trucks and when designed were done so by an 8 or 9 year old boy true story. Thank you
Tell me more Bryan. Intrigued.
Well I made bet with some high ranking military th8s was a few years after Vietnam ended I told them I could design a full armor tank and make it run 60 mph pretty much across any terrain and surpass the 3.1 gallons per mile of the tank they were using and my design did exactly that the hummer came after that as a replacement for dodges chevys while testing the prototype it was nearly failed because it drove opposite corners front to back it wouldn't climb I instructed them to apply braking pressure to lock the differentials then it woul climb walls. It did and that was how it started the only thing different f4om design was 3000lbs.of weight it had to lose to get accepted so the gov.removed 3169lbs that was passenger protection 6inches of rhino liner and Kevlar in floor boards 4 inches 8n the doors and body above head high it pains me to think how many lives that change cost but yours is looking great and will be unique
That’s a great story! Thank you for your contribution to this icon. I really do love mine.
I do to. You welcome enjoy
Looking great!!
Thanks for this video, and sharing your costs, and the companies you use. The roof on mine has issues and ive been looking to replace it, and some humvee shops want 6-7k for an aluminum roof. I knew it couldn't be that expensive, 🙄
Exactly. The cost that shops charge is basically research, labor and dev costs and overheads. That can’t be helped when it becomes a business. But to make a one off like I did, yeah, it doesn’t cost the earth.
Great Job On The Roof, Super Cool
Thank you kind sir! 😎
Great job. Love the details. What paint do you use for the roll-on applications?
Latex based house paint. It’s in the part 1 video.
OK thanks. I watched all three parts, must have missed it. Also watched the ones where you painted your Humvee and it mentioned the spray cans. Thanks for sharing your project. Very cool to watch.@@MyHumveeMathilda
Question. Why screw on the roof and not rivet?
Good question. I wanted to do both, but it was a spur of the moment decision not to back up the screws with rivets. The screws are thicker and I’m thinking have more holding power for something heavy like the roof. I still may rivet them at some point. But it’s been over a year of driving like this and not a rattle yet.
You were right. That was the fun part! LOL Looking good! Can't wait to see the finished product. How was it during the test drive? Any odd noises.. Rattles, whistles, etc...?
Hey Russ, not a single rattle. It was solid. The rest of the humvee still rattles and creaks as usual 🤣
@@MyHumveeMathilda awesome!!
Супер красавчик
большое тебе спасибо
Why is the roof elevated, leaving a gap above the doors?
It isn’t elevated, it sits flat on the b and C pillar the same as the soft top did. The curved sides would have covered that 2 inch gap up. That’s why I’ve filled it in with metal plates.
@@MyHumveeMathilda Best wishes on your upgrade!
Good job 👏 🎉. I you don’t mind me asking. What was the total cost of your roof?
The cost is in the description.
