Seriously WHY are they so bad? The Jeeps that came before were simple but at least reliable. In Germany I drove the 4x4 their army uses, the "Wolf". That was an almost luxurious excellent car. But just like the HMMWV it was designed in the 80s, so its not a new vehicle. So why does the HMMWV suck in comparison???
Sleeping bags are mostly rated at their “survival rating” rather than their “comfort rating.” Always go 20 degrees below what the survival rating is. So if your sleeping in 0 degrees, you want a -20 Fahrenheit bag to sleep comfortably.
You can have the best sleeping bag out there, if you keep your clothes on, you'll be cold. I've slept like baby in the back of a truck at 0°F, no problem.
You also need to insulate your body with some kind of sleeping pad, since your body will compress and flatten the insulation in the bag directly under your body you want a slim air pad or foam pad to retain your body heat better. It would probably increase temps inside your bag by 10°+
Ok so a little tip from an ex-boyscout: there are these camping mattresses that have their other side covered in a foil. This foil helps keeping you warm by reflecting your own body heat back into you. Helps a ton during winter camping, highly recommend if you ever end up in a similar situation like this.

The Humvee was a failure from the very start. The winner of the tender was actually a vehicle submitted by AMC, but they went bust before they could produce a prototype. The Humvee was too heavy, had horrendous fuel consumption, had no occupant protection, was hard to maintain and for a nearly four ton vehicle, could only carry 4 people. They tried to add armour but that took it to six tonnes and it was still vulnerable to IEDs. It did nothing well. The Australian army evaluated it and rejected it out of hand. They went with hardened Mercedes G's and built their own MRAP Bushmaster that was superior in every respected to the GM and Oshkosh efforts that were too heavy and expensive. A Bushmaster could limp back to base with a wheel blown off. The US one required a crane and a low loader. Pity if the bad guys were nearby.
The hmmwv is not hard to maintain. They are actually very easy to maintain if they are maintained properly to begin with. The one he has seems like to me that it hasnt been properly maintained for a long time. . As for up-armed yes for IEDs that are about worthless but when getting shot at they are great. As for gas mileage when your talking about an old school 6.2 or 6.5 diesel it doesn't have that bad of gas mileage.

I was at the border of Iraq/Jordan in 2005, our Humvee would barely start, when it did it would blow a ton of black smoke, everytime the driver put it into gear it would stall. The Iraqis were standing there laughing at us. He would rev it up, slam it into gear and it would stall again. It seemed like we would never get out of there. Luckily, it finally got moving.
Yup, that is why the Humvee used the TH350 with a high ratio rear end for peak off road crawling capabilities. And why AMC/GM put the 700R4 in the original H1 paired with a GM 4.10-4.35 ratio rear end for both peak torque and road speeds of up to 85 mph comfortably. Original Humvee is rated at 50-55 mph top speed at 3500 top rpm with the 6.2/6.5 Detroit diesel and Turbo hydromatic 350 transmission and 4.60 ratio rear end. Original H1, was rated for 85 mph top speed at 3500 rpm with 6.2/6.5 Detroit diesel and the turbo hydromatic 700R4 transmission and 4.10-4.35 ratio rear end. Now if you got a 93 with rare 5.7 V8 engine option. You gained fuel economy, 6500 to 7000 top rpm. And a 275-325 top bhp with about 295-350 ft-lbs of torque. And a nice small block sounding V8 engine to match.
@@justinstearns9723 yeah I forgot these things weigh about 6500-8000 pounds stock and can carry/haul up to 10000 pounds worth of armaments and cargo for various operation purposes. While the TH350 was more for half ton and 3/4 ton pick up trucks. Where as the TH400 was originally designed for the AWD Cheyenne work trucks. Which I remember seeing that one gm commercial where it hauled a 70 ton log train at low speeds. Just to show that the TH400 was a tough 1+ ton transmission.

Especially in the middle of the desert. Heat works just fine... especially when the coolant doesn't.
@@robertelder164 That's the joke, friend.
“If this blows up in my face, delete my browser history” had me dying of laughter 😂
lol I laughed my ass off when he said that...
This entire video had me dying of laughter
OMG, I wet myself at that!! 🤣😂🤣😂
That looked nuts racing down that mountain!😣😨😱Westen you are certifiably insane!!!!! 👨⚕️🤪⛓
Whoever came up with HMVE Dumpty is a fecking genius!!!!
my younger sister works in tech and social media. my older sister has in her will, that younger sister is to handle all of her social media and internet accounts. I get any pets and plants.
A good friend willl delete your entire internet presence! 😆 Just for precautions. 😂
“Nothing can stop a Humv”
“How about them flat tires?”
“Heyyyyy”
😂😂
Had to laugh about staying over night in the HUMMVEE! Did that so many times in the Army!!! Now imagine operating one of those for over a decade and a half Putting up with what you dealt with on your trip more often than you’d like to!!! Funny thing is I miss those times!!! Tip for next time you go camping in it. Lay a stretcher across the back seats and put a partially folded blanket on it. Makes it way better to sleep in it!
7:48 now that's horsepower right there
Worked on those for 12 years in the army. I’ve drove them fixed them cussed them out and lived in them. Best and worst times of my life. Lol thanks for reminding me of some great memories.
Westen is funny asf, and the best part about it is I don’t think he even try’s to be. His personality is the greatest. Good shit man.
I would immediately buy a “Fred will endure” ushanka winter hat
I would also immediately buy a "Fred will endure" ushanka winter hat
This is the second video of yours I've seen and I have to say I'm not one to watch the more southern style videos but this journey has been a masterpiece! You had me laughing out loud so many times! Thank you for making this.
If westen starts doing give aways, he just needs to do "a day with westen" give aways lol I'd for sure enter that
Better plan for a week with Westen!!
Westin: I never thought I'd be out here doing something like this,
Me: spooning with a dolphin in a snowstorm?
I've tent camped my whole life and one of the most important things you need is a sleeping mat. Put that on the floor of the humv under your sleeping bag and you will be much more comfortable. They also keep you warmer
Yep, and sleeping pads don't even take up much room if you get an inflatable one that compacts down well
I haven't had much experience in the ways of army vehicles since i'm only 16 about to turn 17, but i think the ground and aviation vehicles in the army and air force respectively are so freaking cool
This guy is an absolute mad lad for doing this, getting sick and still truckin'
My respect for Westen is unmatched
Keep up the amazing content Westen!
One key element to cold weather camping is a thermarest or other foam pad. It adds a layer of insulation, and a bit of padding. Just more comfort all around.
Can we just acknowledge that he bought a cooler to keep his things COLD then went to camp on a snowy mountain, love the videos tho always happy to see a new post
Right? The stuff left outside was colder than anything in the cooler.
The “yeehaw” at 4:37 was the most pure yeehaw I’ve ever heard yeehawed. Yeehaw brother.
😂😂 the camping segment for me
@Mav ready to go ice fishing
Not a chance
LOL of course you of all people.
Dudeee i cant believe your still even around...mav
thats one scookum chair

Humvee dumpty
It's Fred
fred.
All the way the Florida.

thank god you uploaded, today and yesterday have been rough on me, needed this
Just discovered you yesterday and your already my favorite RUclipsr. Your vast knowledge of mechanics is respectable. Keep on keepin on bud
I’m on my first few days of rehab, and these videos are keeping me sober. Thanks for taking the adventure!
Westen is proof you can have fun sober. I had some crazy drunken adventures, but I've had many more good times since I got clean and sober in 1987. Good luck to you on your new journey. 👍🏻
I’m about to hit my year sober in a couple weeks. You got this brother.
We (the collective RUclips) are rooting for you. Rehab is your bitch, you got this. The absolute best of luck.
Seeing you drive through Colorado and goofing off in the same Cabelas I've goofed off in while visiting family, it just makes my heart happy. Never stop being you Westen, and thank you.
What were the official requirements when this was procured? Did the troops love it or hate it?
- Too wide to fit around narrow corners
- Much less reliable than your average Toyota technical
- Gas guzzling logistical challenge
- Shock & Awe inspiring looks
- Something else ?
LOVE MY HMMV IN AFGHANISTAN SAVE MY LIFE..ALSO NOISY AND SO HOT....
It was an improvement over the Jeep (inside) space wise but the maintenance it requires is rediculas.
one bonus tho. it sure can fit a lot of crayon boxes inside.
I was in a unit that upgraded from the m151a1 Jeep.
Roof. Heater. Nothing can stop it..
It's got the same track width that tanks and military trucks use so that it can drive behind them in a mine field.
I think the beauty of having Fred is the offroad experience, nothing compares to having a humvee in the mountain, that's truly beautiful. Yeah, it doesn't do roads well, but it does off road babyyy
yo brother Westen. I've seen most of your videos, you're the best I've seen. you and your team do an insanely good job. what i like best about your videos is that you show both victory and small setbacks, you bid on yourself like no one else does. thank you so much for many great youtube videos. best regards from the middle of norway :)
Absolutely love the doors and roof
I've watched you two basically since it started I'm an automotive RUclips enthusiast I basically watch at least 3-4 hours of Automotive RUclips a day. This channel is entertaining informative and funny you've landed on a gold mine bro if you continue this type of blog you will be very successful good luck congratulations on the success so far
Check out vice grip garage if you have never watched him before
Dude idk why but this part makes me laugh so hard 😂😂 2:18
You’re a brave man. These things break down just sitting in the motor pool.
Humvee-Dumpty needed new shoes,
Humvee-Dumpty got some 22’s,
Humvee-Dumpty had a long ride,
Humvee-Dumpty got 12 valve swapped.
Humvee-Dumpty gets 1100 horsepower
Dumpy needs to visit Banks turbos.
Watching at 7am got me wanting to never buy a humv 😂
Your here
They are really not very good vehicles, you want the last ones ever made with a Duramax engine, they call them ALPHA ONES
@@cargotoolshop5319 those are hummer h1s, they are technically different vehicles
The military ones are all garbage, LOUD, slow, unreliable. 4 people and bags and you'll be struggling to hold 25mph up hill. They ride rough, uncomfortable, cramped.
we had a ex military one at work. worst pos ive ever driven. basically a covered wagon with prob worse heat. i always say anyone thats wants a hummer besides the bedroom kind has never driven one.
Fred's flexing them new shoes!
This reminded me when me and my grandpa drove home with a rusty ww2 jeep he found in a garage about 300 miles away from home.
Thanks for making and sharing this video.
When you got this Humvee that's the first video of yours I ever saw. Happy to see the follow up video.
The tire blowing out when it did was a blessing in disguise. You got doors and a roof for the remainder of the trip 😎 not to mention a legit windshield.
“If I could weld as good I put mustard on a hot dog I’d be a great fabricator” that shit had me laughing my ass off.
This is the best thing I've seen in a loooong time
"I'm going to try and survive through the night in a middle of a snow storm.... yeah, this is stupid.." God's speed Westen!
brother, I respect your positive attitude and energy. so rare these days!! you're a great content creator !!
This can make for one nice build, especially if you get the actual x doors and stuff.
I'm really surprised this humvee made it all the way through the whole trip to say it came straight from the govt auction and not checked yet
I vote for Frebertha or Berdth or Reginald.
EDIT: 9:26 Meanwhile bears in the woods, "You hear Westen is coming? Yeah. I'm kind of worried about Westen. You think Westen is mean?"
BFG would never fail you like that. Hindsight: some Dynamat in that cab might have been a good idea.
Or dynamite
You should engine swap the humvee with a 3000hp Diesel engine or something crazy like that
The cowboy hat looked pretty fly you should rock one more often
First time watching your channel as a Honda guy I'd like to admit your Mustang is bad ass and your humvee trip was crazy af to watch and cool to see what little innovation compared to the amount determination can help accomplish props to you man 💯
An H1 Humvee: A vehicle you wouldn't drive more than ten miles - unless a large man having more stripes on his sleeve told you to.
or stars
There is no such thing as an H1 Humvee.
I felt that "I don't love military vehicles no more " welcome to our lives everyday.
I loved every bit of both parts of that journey. God bless you guys and your shenanigans.
Every military veteran is watching this and yelling how those things were total shit boxes.
@@catsaregovernmentspies Thank you for your service happy Veterans Day.
Da talibaned really loves theirs....
So there’s that...
Absolutely. Had to push quite a ways last year 😂
@@rickreese5794 well yeah it was free
As a army mechanic, those trucks aren’t good for high speeds held for that long.
I concur 😉
@@williamajthompson9166 They had a TH 400 trans, a TH350 would never have held up to the weight and abuse these things saw.
As an Equipment Operator in the Seabees we don’t care. Redline the HMMWV till the bitch blows up so you can fix it
Oh to be young and dumb, I miss those days sometimes lol. My back hurt just watching you sleep in Fred. You'll never forget this trip and thats what really matters. Even cooler that you filmed it all and posted it up!
This is easily one of Westen’s best videos by far.
Lmao watching you bounce around going down hill gave me flash backs. Imagine that in full battle rattle, ammo cans and open MRE packages flying around
Seems about right. I once bought a pallet of 5 military surplus tires. 1 came with a broken belt right off the bat, 2 of them exploded within a couple thousand miles and 1 developed a sidewall leak after a few months.
The way he runs after it and throws the dolphin into he back is legendary 🙌
15:42 good call brother 👌 that decision along was a life saver!! Cattle dont holler in the middle of the night unless they are in fear/hunted by other wildlife especially at 3am they'd normally be asleep like most ppl, somthing was out there and close enough to hear you forsure mabe even watching you
Westen realizing just how great a portaband is at the beginning is great
Lmao damn, that tire failing clip is hilarious. You can see the seriousness on your face temporarily kick in. Humvee Dumpty is a good ass name, not gunna lie
Thank you for getting the Humvee, content we need
Humvee Dumpty is the best name i've ever heard!!!
Just as I was typing to ditch the stock tires and runflats....the 22s came on my screen. Well played.
“If this blows up in my face delete my browser history” 😂😂 that could be a shirt.
With a picture of Humvee Dumpty
"If this blows up in my face... Delete my browser history" 😂😂😂 I'm getting that put on my Tombstone 😂😂
We used to drive these on the autobahn in Germany. They couldn't even keep up with a loaded M915
