That 's my booney hat Sammy is wearing during Best Of Both Worlds. I whipped it as hard as I could right before Why Can't this be love and it landed right between Al's bass drums. Perfect Shot.
I was at this show. However, i was 14 years old, and had started playing guitar about a year prior. I was so astounded to be in my idols presence i couldn't even tell that anything was wrong, it was an amazing life changing experience for me at the age as a young guitarist, i'll never forget it. Saw them later on the 2015 tour as well.
there were some decent nights, and most of the shows had at least a handful of good moments. I saw them early on the tour, night 7... Eddie looked awful but sounded good, and the energy on stage was still okay at that point. nothing seemed wrong to me apart from Ed looking like he was at death's door. Mikey, Alex, and and Sam were of course flawless.
Gotta give Sammy credit. I just painfully watched the whole concert. So much tension. Eddie was volatile. Sammy really tried to work with Ed... he was so careful but Eddie just wasn't having it. A few times he looked like he could 'fake it' and try to get along.... but it is so easy to see that Eddie was likely in the worst place he's ever been, or close to it. I wish he wouldn't have had to go through this. Those demons must have been on steroids. Years later when Eddie did his interview at the Smithsonian, he literally made me cry. He was a new and different man with such miraculous clarity in his speech. I'm likely one of THE hugest and most dedicated guitarists and fans of Eddie, and I always have been ( I was 16 and am now 59).....this concert is very difficult to watch. For those 'fans' who are new to Van Halen and want to see them at their best, please DON'T watch this concert and judge them by what you see. This is NOT them... not even close.
Ive seen VH 6 times including 2004, this was by far the worst and it's not even close. The best 2 were in the 80's, one with Roth and one with Hagar. Both incredible shows and Ed's playing was amazing. The 90's shows were good too but Ed played key's more and I wasn't a fan of those musical choices. 2015 the playing was good, less keys, but Roth's voice was shot. He never had a voice like Hagar but the music shined and Roth's vocals were buried in the mix so it didnt ruin the show. Still a great but the 80's Van Halen was epic, clearly the pinnacle of their music.
Fascinating to watch this sad spectacle. I only saw them once -at the legendary June 1981 Oakland concert filmed for mtv. The contrast between the two shows is heartbreaking
I saw every tour from 1979 to the time of Eddie’s passing excepting the disaster that was VH 3. The music will go with me to my grave. This era of VH was difficult to watch. Eddie should have kicked Sammy out instead of the charade. That said, they performed brilliantly, especially given Eddie’s clear impaired state. Amazing he could be that loaded and still play better than everyone else in the world. RIP EVH. Can’t wait to meet you on the flip side.
We use to play gigs with them back in the club days like the Starwood,Golden West Ballroom and Whisky and it was so obvious they were going to be huge. Soon as they walked out on stage and were so confident and pulled you right in. No one could stand loud mouth smelly and sweaty Dave but ended up being one of the greatest front men of our time so he got the last laugh. But he’d get so drunk few years later that he couldn’t remember the words so Ed and Alex were saying they had it.

I saw their show in Toronto, Canada in July 2004 & they played stellar to a sold out Air Canada Centre. Four months later, they played in Hamilton (about a 45 minute drive) to half an arena & Eddie was a complete mess. I was about ten rows back on the floor & couldn't believe what I was watching & hearing. After reading Sammy's book, he said the tour ended about a week later in Tucson, Arizona & Eddie smashed his guitar at the end of the show & was out of control. It was very sad to see what had happened to one of my all time favourite musicians.

Eddie was smashed all the time when he played with Roth, but he always held it together and played awesome. Here with Hagar the drinking finally caught up with him.
I learned of Eddie's death the day after my birthday. Heard it from a friend. I truly had to take some time and let it sink in. It was at a time in my life when things were bleak. I cried and prayed. Love ya EDDIE....
I saw them in 2004 in Milwaukee @ The Bradley Center. I didn't notice how bad of shape he was in or was aware of it till years later. This tune.. his guitar is SO badly out of tune... Holy shit man.. it's heartbreaking to listen too.. especially after listening to the "Live: Right Here Right Now" concert... How could Alex just tolerate this shit every night? RIP Ed VH.. glad he got sober eventually
Hearing Eddie wailing random shit throughout 'Top of the World' is hilarious. His Guitar was just a cacophony of distress during his moments of a intoxicated stupor

Anybody who has seen Van Halen on tour other than this tour knows this is bad . I’ve seen them 3 time 2 times before and once after and Eddie was great . Unfortunately not one of his finest moments here . RIP to the Greatest.
This performance always brings a smile to my face. I feel like it was the last real Van Halen tour mainly because Mike Anthony is involved. Nothing against Wolfy and the later Dave tours but I really enjoy this and wish I would have seen it live. Don't care if Ed was whacked out at times, it's always magic with EVH live.
The Vegas show was so bad on this tour, we demanded our $ back and got it. Eddie did his solo on his back and played out of tune or key most of the show. Michael Anthony kept watching Eddies left hand to try and follow him. It was bad.
Just here to keep it real in remembering Eddie. He had moments when he wasn’t his old EVH self. Glad he cleaned up after this. I hoped so badly that they’d patch things up with Michael and we’d get the original lineup again before Eddie passed away. Wolfie did an outstanding job but it was just not the same without Mike. Having Mike would have even made Dave tolerable. RIP Eddie.
Having been at this exact show and seen VH ever time they came to Cincinnati, i can say with no disrespect that this was Eddie's poorest perdormance I have ever seen. Love him nonetheless. RIP Eddie

At least Sammy and Eddie are acknowledging each other somewhat here. I saw them in SanJose on this tour and I don’t even think they looked at each other. Sammy and Mike just sang together while Eddie just kept his head down the entire time.
I saw the Toronto show in July 2004 and it was absolutely fabulous. Everything appeared fine. Four months later in Hamilton, Ontario the band was a complete mess. I was shocked at the decline. Something was seriously wrong. Thank God Eddie cleaned himself up. For fans be sure to view his Smithsonian interview. You see the real Eddie VH and the person we want to remember. RIP
Even Eddie's pickups were a mess on the sunburst Peavey...the plastic casings where broke on bridge and neck positions. From what I see with a zoom in.

I agree with Diana. If Eddie is so irrisponsible to himself, the other band members, and the fans, he shouldn't play live or tour. I just feel bad for Sammy and Mike for having to play along with a drunk guitarist. Eddie, clean up before a show. The music is good when you're in tune, attentive, and on the same planet as the rest of the band. Its sad to see Eddie such a mess on this tour.
Awesome to see at least SOME footage of Ed playing like he should on this tour. 🙏 also, I think Ed was supposed to switch guitars after JUMP to one that was half step down… but said “fuck it” lol
Smack in the middle of the second leg of the tour. Eddie is messed up, but at least there is some interaction between him and Sammy. That third leg is where you can see Sammy doing his best to just stay away from Eddie and get through the show.
I remember being just out of high school and wanting desperately to go to this concert. I didn't know at the time what the status of the band was. All I knew was that my heroes were coming to town. I didn't end up going and wow am I glad. I did see VH the first two times after Ed got sober and it was marvelous. I'm glad my opinion wasn't swayed by this crap.
Alex was the reason this tour happened nobody else wanted to do it because of how bad eddie was with the meth and booze and other drugs he was taking but alex needed money he was going through a divorce and he had made some bad investments with his money he was living with eddie at this time so he talked the band into this tour so he could make money and get back on his feet
Kind of hard to watch these two go at it... at the expense of the audience. Like kids on drugs. Ed......I'm so glad he didn't continue down that path. So sad. The crowd doesn't seem to notice that Michael is running the show, keeping Sammy cool.... Al is just going through the motions and Ed is just trying to do his best to play like shit and piss people off with his guitar, sounds and his actions, facial expressions... can't even imagine what he is on and what he is really doing during this show behind the scenes. Seems like an ass-kickin would be in place but I'm sure Al would jump in. I know I wouldn't have dealt with that shit from Ed for a whole show let alone a whole tour
Yeah, he's still pretty much wasted here. He has a few bright spots, but it's just so....sloppy. I'm a big Page fan, so I've come to appreciate sloppy, but Ed has always been more or less on point, and this (and the whole dame tour, of which I went to 2 shows) is just sadly, "I forgot how that goes," kinda sloppy. Oh well. Just thankful he's not in this place now!
Damnyankee Yankee Watch his solo. He pretty much plays Spanish Fly in its entirety. Not saying he is AMAZING on this night but he was about 90% better than he was on most shows that tour.
Sammy and Michael had quite a few eye contact head shaking moments as Eddie was sinking pretty steadily through the show especially after about half way through...Terrible...He managed to pull off a half coherent solo though....
Thank you Sammy for coming along and helping Van Halen reach greater Musical Greatness. Sammy and Mike with their singing truly created rock and roll genius. Sammy with his business sense and singing Talent really elevated the band and created a great rock and roll era for many in the U.S. This membership lineup is truly missed.
Saw them at Hershey park in 2004 eddie was seriously running to the side of the stage and jumping into the air off his amps was out of control from what I remember it was a crazy show a football field very low turnout ,I do remember at 2 pm watching alex mike and eddie jamming for an hour my wife was like why are you freaking out as I heard it I said its vh soundchecking no Sammy so it was them just jamming I loved it amazing though no footage of the show sucks
The Fort Wayne show Ed played on his back during his solo and let his guitar feedback the whole time! I couldn't believe it. Hope to see them again someday but not like that.
Funny fact......... i went to montreal show of that tour and it was perfect.. i didn't hear anything bad out of this show it was one of the good ones of the tour maybe THE ONLY ONE!
@@70mjc ...no shit...Sammys voice when he wakes up is better than Roth on his best day..had to be ran through the control boards to even sound like anything anyway..
Wow Eddie can not play at all on this tour, Sammy said he hated the tour, was waiting for Eddie to die he was in that bad of shape, bottle of wine in his hand at all times wearing the same clothes on stage and off for days on end and was missing lots of his teeth, drinking and drugs most likely meth, but speed freaks usually shower unless your riding a Harley I would know, seems like some smack was in there somewhere probably speedballing because he plays ok sometimes.SAD.
The Happy Hour Hound he was fine during this tour. Their animosity, per Sammy AND The VH bros, happened after the tour and as a result of Sammy wanting a break before heading into the studio. Research ftw
@@cultfilmfreakreviews because Sammy is a good guy and he didn't deserve any of this. Amazing singer. If he'd been in Van Halen since 78 you'd never miss Roth. You'd think Roth sucks. Bc Roth DOES suck.
Every one always talks about how messed up Eddie was on this tour.I blame that ridiculous cord extender eye bolt dohicky thingy on his guitar. cuz anyone seeing that must have been like yup he's gotta be out of his ever lovin mind. Thank god EVH never marketed one cuz I probably would have blew like $75.00 on one brahaha.
its tough to watch and listen to a little ..... crazy thing is , eddie here at his worst is better than some at their best..... and I'm not a guitar played what so ever but this just goes to show how hard some of this shit is to play even when your creator of it!!........ in the end its to bad, eddie looked like he was in good physical shape here but i guess kinda fucked in the head... so glad my first VH experience was the 2015 where some say eddie was better or just as good when VH first came out
Man, when you put this next to Live Without a Net...it's just too bad. No between song talk from Sam, in Hartford he barely spoke other than singing (which was fantastic for a 56 year old dude) and I could tell something was weird. It's just like Sammy said in the book, "Not bad vibes. Just NO vibes."
I saw this tour in Worcester, MA and Ed spent a LOT of time fiddling with that cable contraption. It was distracting how often he stopped playing to fiddle with it.

Fuckin meth and testosterone cocktailed
Delivered the goods? This is trash bro, lol
That riff Eddie is playing is something he played back in 1983. @11:20
Awesome to see at least SOME footage of Ed playing like he should on this tour. 🙏 also, I think Ed was supposed to switch guitars after JUMP to one that was half step down… but said “fuck it” lol
Glad to see you're doing work in Philadelphia.... They need lots of help. God bless you Sammy and Kylie!!!
Smack in the middle of the second leg of the tour. Eddie is messed up, but at least there is some interaction between him and Sammy. That third leg is where you can see Sammy doing his best to just stay away from Eddie and get through the show.
So sad to see Eddie like this. glad he is a new man now.
Well...
@@danielmj85 in a better place now, at least
Saw them twice on this tour. Eddie...not good. Thank God he is in a much better place in his life now.
Raldo5150 same here. Twice. Louisville and ft wayne. Eddie was a disaster drunk and all over the place
Dead?
@@alexjonees9787 Not when I posted 4 years ago.
@@Raldo5150 well no shit
@@Raldo5150 I'm impressed you came back to reply.
Somebody get me a doctor.... looks like Sammy and Eddie are really goin at it... the camera tries to hide it but Eddie is fucking with Sammy so hard
27:34 LMAO
Trev x and 30:52
I remember being just out of high school and wanting desperately to go to this concert. I didn't know at the time what the status of the band was. All I knew was that my heroes were coming to town. I didn't end up going and wow am I glad. I did see VH the first two times after Ed got sober and it was marvelous. I'm glad my opinion wasn't swayed by this crap.
+Nate MacMillen Side note: Alex is still and always will be GOD
that cool hes using the Kramer with a strat neck. that's ed always changing things up.
was his peavey contract up at this time? anybody?
30:52 fat yikes
WTF was that? Bloody awful.
Michael Anthony singing on why cant this be love is so out...
whoa they play "Up For Breakfast" eeeeeekkkkk
Worst song ever
This is the show that I went to
Alex was the reason this tour happened nobody else wanted to do it because of how bad eddie was with the meth and booze and other drugs he was taking but alex needed money he was going through a divorce and he had made some bad investments with his money he was living with eddie at this time so he talked the band into this tour so he could make money and get back on his feet
What a band! I miss EVH and that lineup....
5:23 Frankenstein watching the show
This show was a trainwreck!
This os one of the few boots Ive seen from that tour where Eddie actually seems sober.
He's playing great here.
I was at this show along with Columbus and Ft.Wayne. He was at his most sober this night no question.
Eh no....he's f'ed up. He's continuously noodling thru all the songs and most of it is out of time and/or out of tune.
Damnyankee Yankee Watch his solo. He pretty much plays Spanish Fly in its entirety. Not saying he is AMAZING on this night but he was about 90% better than he was on most shows that tour.
Mitch Farkas although is not his best here I do like how he seems he is improvising alot here on the solo
Best Rock fans around!
Believe that!
Ed was in tears after his solo, what a ovation he got that nite!!!! Rip Ed!!
Funny fact......... i went to montreal show of that tour and it was perfect.. i didn't hear anything bad out of this show it was one of the good ones of the tour maybe THE ONLY ONE!
that little tidbit before Unchained was cooolll.
I’d give anything to be able to play half as well as Eddie, even when he was fucked up.
What guitar did he open this show with? It looks like his old 5150 Kramer body with an evh neck and a different pickup.
michael has the best voice of anyone in vh
Amazing pitch and harmony!
So Sammy comes back and Eddie sounds like me on guitar. Roth comes back and completely sucks and Eddie is back to his own self. Go figure?
dave's songs still sound better than sammy's beer commercials.
Whitecloud Ramone not hard to figure out. Alcohol abuse does that....
Fred Derry let us know when your head is out of your ass and you understand music 101 because atm, you’re embarrassing
@@70mjc ...no shit...Sammys voice when he wakes up is better than Roth on his best day..had to be ran through the control boards to even sound like anything anyway..
Eddie was a mess with alcohol this whole tour
Wow Eddie can not play at all on this tour, Sammy said he hated the tour, was waiting for Eddie to die he was in that bad of shape, bottle of wine in his hand at all times wearing the same clothes on stage and off for days on end and was missing lots of his teeth, drinking and drugs most likely meth, but speed freaks usually shower unless your riding a Harley I would know, seems like some smack was in there somewhere probably speedballing because he plays ok sometimes.SAD.
James Bone Your run on sentence has inspired me to learn Spanish. You are amazing!
I'd rather listen to Eddie Van Halen for 2 hours shredding shit faced having a blast than half of the lame ass bands out there now....
LOL Eddie drunk and wasted out of his mind during this concert is still better than 99.999% of the universe on guitar.
Eddie was at his lowest here. Sammy was miserable on this tour
who cares what sammy felt.
The Happy Hour Hound he was fine during this tour. Their animosity, per Sammy AND The VH bros, happened after the tour and as a result of Sammy wanting a break before heading into the studio.
Research ftw
Fred Derry a lot more than care about your douchey opinion
@@cultfilmfreakreviews because Sammy is a good guy and he didn't deserve any of this. Amazing singer. If he'd been in Van Halen since 78 you'd never miss Roth. You'd think Roth sucks. Bc Roth DOES suck.
Fred Derry well he was threatened with a lawsuit if he left the tour. that’s something even axl rose wouldn’t do
Everyone can say what they want.I was at this show.Everyone loved it.They played fine.
Anyone have the set list with time stamps?
@1:45:00 Sounds like a piece of music Edward was working up.
1:17 to 1:20 Sam looks like he’s ready to throw the towel.
What happened to Eddie?! I mean..... Even when he's fucked up, he's still the best..... He was definitely strange....
Eddie was in such bad shape here🥺
This tour was awful. In some performances in 2004 Ed was totally drunk and forgetting the song.
The NNATI ROCKS!!!!!!
This is painful to watch. I saw Van Halen on their first national tour with Journey in '78 and Eddie was a god. This is just noise.
its tough to watch and listen to a little ..... crazy thing is , eddie here at his worst is better than some at their best..... and I'm not a guitar played what so ever but this just goes to show how hard some of this shit is to play even when your creator of it!!........ in the end its to bad, eddie looked like he was in good physical shape here but i guess kinda fucked in the head... so glad my first VH experience was the 2015 where some say eddie was better or just as good when VH first came out
Randy Fricke here only Sammylove is ridicolous
i saw this tour back in 2004 over here in la ca&ED DID THE SAME SOLO HE WAS FUCKED UP OMG, BUT HE RULED!! IT
Man, when you put this next to Live Without a Net...it's just too bad. No between song talk from Sam, in Hartford he barely spoke other than singing (which was fantastic for a 56 year old dude) and I could tell something was weird. It's just like Sammy said in the book, "Not bad vibes. Just NO vibes."
Was he that drunk that he couldn't hear how out of tune he was on Runaround?
round round round. such a lame song.
Humans Being sounds horrible too, he realizes his guitar is out of tune but the song had already started so he keeps playing it, cringy stuff
Fred Derry well in fairness van halen lyrics are never really poetic. it’s just stuff to chant at a concert
@@rikkifknrobin some songs had deeper lyrics, though they weren't played live much.
What the hell is that metal thing sticking out the side of Eds guitar?
it holds his cable away from him
I saw this tour in Worcester, MA and Ed spent a LOT of time fiddling with that cable contraption. It was distracting how often he stopped playing to fiddle with it.
Edward = Hot Mess. Love you.
26:22 that is as good as I've ever heard Ed play the Somebody Get Me A Doctor Solo live...
