I Carl Browning "WAS" there that day in Dallas Texas. 🇺🇸✌🏻❤🎶🎸👊🏻🇨🇱 Thank You, Eddie Van Halen, for decades of great Rock & Roll❗ I was 20 years old in 1991 right in the heart of Dallas Texas my HOME town. The show only lasted give or take an hour and the show was shut down by the cops. I waited ALL day to see this concert. I WAS front row but could NOT handle being pushed against the barricades. If you watch the crowd there was a guy on the light pole. Well, he fell off, being drunk crashing down on his head, not a good thing. It took the ambulance a while to part the crowd just to get to him. Man, sometimes I miss being 20, not a care, my long hair, and having fun like that‼️ 🤙🏻 The last song brings happy tears to my eyes.
This gig is one of those we should show our kids when we want to explain rock and roll to them: get up on a stage, no fancy lights, and simply kiss ass....what a great vibe this has....
Got out of work early to make it down a few hours before show started. Had a great spot under one of those trees standing on a planter box so no one in front of me. One of my favorite concerts ever because of the whole vibe that day. Everyone having fun and enjoying one of the best bands ever!
Great drummer and a sweet guy too ! He stopped and took time out for me to get a picture with him in 91 at Toronto International Airport. I'll never forget that
You can see the sound system that they're using and by 1991 modern recording technology was pretty good so it's no wonder this should sound near their studio recording, Eddie did use cranked up amp's on the studio too in order top get the same live sound on the records !?
RUclips has done a great job with all the free music, I am blown away all the time on RUclips and FREE. People bash Sammy as a weak link, but I love Sammy and he can play guitar too. Without Sammy Van Halen would not have been as successful. Difficult to find a singer that meshes, most groups suffer post original singer.
Damn, Sammy could sing circles around Dave but Dave was a showman. If you could combine both of them, you’d have the greatest frontman in music history.
@@mystyrjenkins8048 except Gary isn’t sex on legs charisma man Dave, while having maybe 2/3 of Sammy’s pipes. Dave’s music is the best music, Sammy’s clearly the best vocalist (but fr Van Hagar was, outside of the really good stuff like Poundcake and Top of the World, like having Journey but with the world’s greatest guitarist).
@@mystyrjenkins8048 No way 🤣 Gary looks like a skinny dork on stage. Pretty good singer but seriously lacking in the looks and stage presence departments
Awesome show for sure, we were about mid way back on the right side of the stage. Traffic was insane leaving. I personally liked seeing them on the 1984 tour better.
While listening to Q102 one sunny day in 1991, I learned about the free Van Halen concert in the West End. Next thing I know, my sister and I are in the crowd enjoying the music. We were literally almost crushed alive by the force of the crowd. No regrets though, it was an amazing day. Thank you for an amazing day Eddie, I will never forget that wonderful day. RIP
Quique Dillon Yea, it was a crazy day. They announced the event on the radio and I got in the car and headed to the West End. When I got up that day I had no idea I would be at a VH concert. Cops shut the event down, this kind of thing would *never* happen today.
Here's irony ..... I graduated high school in 1990 in Houston, went to Dallas in 1991 and missed this concert by at least 2 weeks. Bad timing. I live about 15 minutes from the west end now ( 75231 ) and will be moving back to Houston in 2 weeks exactly on ....... Halloween........... Never did get to see Van Halen live in my life time... :(
Yeah, I miss Eddie but I really miss Alex. Man, I keep coming back to hear Alex playing these awesome licks. And this was more than 30 years ago. Alex, you will always be one of the most badass Rock drummers in rock history, and there's been a lot and you're most certainly in good company. RIP EV but rock on Alex! Til the cows come home....lol
I love how Sammy is SO positive! He very often says things like "oh everything's alright, huh," and commenting how real and amazing everything is in the very moment! Constantly celebrating music, his fans, his band, the moment, and life itself! (Also being generous and compassionate towards his fans.) and OF COURSE I love my main hero Eddie Van Halen! Amazingly positive person as well! And the most innovative, revolutionary, and influential guitarist who ever lived (in so many ways!) Plus this is amazing footage, and the sound quality is AMAZING; for the time especially! I"m so thank full to be able to take this in. The band plays AMAZINGLY light, and with such great enthusiastic energy! Simply amazing! ! ! ! What a great way to spend Christmas!
what a fantastic life these guys have had , I'm sure they've had their ups and downs like everyone else except for just a little bit different level , Ed was such a genius and so much a part of life itself , I mean my life anyway, it still doesn't seem real , will the pain stop , maybe...rest well Ed
At just over one minute in I’m in love with Eddie AGAIN. Playing the Poundcake opening with a beard and long hair. I need a minute. Or two. Or thirty. Come back, Eddie, please. 💔
You can just tell that those guys were in top form here both musically and personally. Effortless perfect, fun, live and real rock n roll. When a band has that type of chemistry it is undeniable.
I was at this event. It was during the week and announced at the last minute in the radio. One of the most amazing concerts ever - the timing, the huge crowd and just Hagar and Van Halen. Wow. What a piece of history. Unforgettable.
The best shit on the fucking planet, seen them so many times, and this is one of the best shows ever, eat your heart out David loser Roth, Sammy brought the heart and soul out of vanhalen. We love and miss you eddie.god speed brother.
An impromptu concert that came off as a full on production. This is one of the greatest live concert videos ever. Playing in the middle of town amongst the buildings and all the people with a perfect sound.
I was at this Dallas show. It was at a restaurant / bar area in the West End. It was a free show put on by VH for having to cancel a previously scheduled show in Dallas. They announced the show on the radio mid-morning. It started a few hours later. When I arrived there were thousands of fans already there waiting for the show. They ended early due to safety concerns. Great memories.
The previous show wasn’t cancelled. It was the ‘88 Texxas Jam. I was there. Sammy lost his voice. Did his best but he announced to the crowd that they would come back and do a free show. True to their word!
Teasers played all week prior to the show in mystery clips on Q102. But damn well worth it! We rushed from Fort Worth to no miss this show. Well worth it...won't forget it!
I’m getting blown away how the internet is blowing up With Van Halen videos interviews tv appearances fan clubs pictures everywhere merchandise. It’s awesome 😎
Glad I found this. I was in college and Van Halen was the music in the background during those great times. Today, I'm thankful for Wolfie VH. Go, see him if he comes to your area. I went to Dublin to see him and in August he will be here in Corpus Christi. He is so talented. Keep on Rocking Peeps!
This is what Live: Right here, Right now should of sounded like. Truly LIVE. We buy live albums to hear the imperfections and energy from the crowd. This sounds great!! 🤘😏🤘
Absolutely agree. I saw them in Dallas (1993) and they were equally great. Hard to believe that Sammy was 42-43 and the others were late 30’s in this video. Look at the energy and passion they poured into this performance... easily matched (or surpassed) Pearl Jam or any of the other grunge bands that ruled early-90’s radio. These “old fellas” roared. And Sammy’s pre-show interview: I’m all for equality, but the world needs more unapologetic, alpha males singing good times rock.✌️
sammy didnt want to be at par with the band, he wants to be the top dog, which only degrades the quality of what makes VH is, years later it came out, dave though came back but was way past his effective antics which what VH was..

Of course Hagar would keep a promise...especially in Texas. Sammy walked into my record store (Sound Town) in Ridgmar Mall in Fort Worth in April of 1979 in the middle of the day with Gary Pihl (his guitarist) to buy some cassettes. His band was opening for Boston the next night at TCCC. I was alrerady a big fam since I saw him fronting Montrose on their first tur in Oct of 1973 so I knew exactly what he looked like. The 17 year old girls I worked with walked up after I started talking to him and asked Pihl, "Is that really Sammy Hagar?" Gary glanced over at Sammy and the said " I don't know" and SAmmy broke up. Dude was just a really nice guy, hung around for about 10 minutes talking and signing albums and 8 TRACKS. And the next night the band BLEW Boston off the stage...
this is probably the best damn concert ever filmed....such energy, chemisty, professionalism, exuberance.......all you rock n rollers out there, this is how it is done!!
I was there on that day,i called in work to see them, and it was worth it,,Sammy and Eddie promised a free show and they came through with flying colors
Alex back there working like a FOOL...so hard. He's so great. They played like it was FREE. For everyone, including them. I believe one of the best captured VH concerts ever. Never expected this, as I watched it with my very eyes in person. Whew!!
Sure. I hear that there's these mystical great visual + sound examples from back in 1982, 1973, 1969 etc etc too but hey that must be the stuff of myth huh? 'For 1991'??
I will always have tears in my eyes 👀 for Mr.EVH 😢 And to Sammy you are the best guy ever for always letting things go even when EVH didn’t .....now he can up in that R N R heaven 🙏🏻❤️🤘🏻🎶🎸🤟🏻
Watching Van Halen play a Sammy song is great. Watching Eddie and Sammy trade fours on the guitar is epic. People forget now, but Sammy is no slouch on the guitar.

I was there in the middle of the crowd and there were dominos pizza venders selling 5 dollar medium pizzas they saved the day we were hungry as hell -WEST END DALLAS TEXAS 1991❤😮❤
I was there Dallas West End I was also at the cotton bowl two years before this show when Sammy Hagar loss his voice and said they would come back and give us a free show. So here it is
I bought ticket's as well but Sammy could not hold-up for it. Told us to keep'em and they would be back later. Free concert my ass, what about the $$$ from the show that was canceled?
This is the first I've heard of it happening elsewhere. Well apparently it was just what he did on a regular basis. I paid big time money to a travel agency, "scalper" to see them in Miami. 93 Sam's voice cracked in the first song splits in the second and broke in the third. He walked off the stage mumbling I suck! I suck! I suck! LIVE Into the microphone 😂 So yeah? Sammy!! Where's the Free Show for Miami? Or maybe my $460.00 back.
Hagar turned into an asshole. He violated the two most important tules of rock: 1. NEVER say a bad thing about a former band mate (especially a band mate that made you rich beyond your wildest dreams). 2. NEVER disrespect your fans, their city, and their brewery. In 2007, a very drunk and obnoxious Hagar amd MA got booed off the stage at the Fox in St. Louis after Hagar's chilish rant about Anhueser Busch decided against brewing his beer idea. When he made fun of AB employees in the audience, we had enough. Hagar deserved an ass-kicking which he later recognized and issued a hollow apology.
I was just on a tour run working for Vince Neil and we were opening for Sammy and the circle and I can tell you Sammy STILL sounds this good if not better now...and he is also a very nice down to earth guy...so is Michael Anthony...serious talent and good guys to boot while I was around them...
I’ve met both Sammy & Mike. Couldn’t agree more. I met Mike’s bass tech Kevin Dugan a few months ago and he couldn’t say enough nice things about Miley and he’s been working for him for 40 years now!
When it comes to rock, they were old dudes in '91. Led Zeppelin reached greatness when they were 20, sold out every show for 11 years, sold over 300 million records, and moved on to solo projects before they were 30. Van Halen wanted to be like Led Zeppelin but they weren't good enough. Eddie claimed he was better than Jimmy Page but he wasn't good enough and his sound wasn't heavy enough. VH couldn't sell half as many records or attract audiences half as big.
I know man. shit happens quick. I saw the rolling stones when they were around 50's....I was like "those old dudes rock pretty good." smh…..I'm now around that age myself!
Im a drummer but I peck around on bass a little. It is not easy to play a steady 8th or 16th .roll on 2 fingers and have steady strikes and volume. Michael Anthony is bad ass!
I am speechless, I never got the chance to go to a Van Halen concert, this was a treat and was awesome. Rest In peace EVH and thanks for the music and memories ,I hope we meet in the next life
Edward’s tone is mind blowing. The speed with which he calmly picks up the Makita without missing a note is simply astonishing. I would love to travel back in time and see this show live. R.I.P. Eddie.
Now lemme ask you something about that - hopefully you're a guitarist. What exactly is Eddie DOING with the drill? Surely he's not spinning its head on the strings? They'd get some shitty smoothness on them, and would probably break quicker. Or is he spinning the head near the pickups? I know the visual effect looks cool, but what exactly is he touching on the guitar with the spinning drill head?
@@DunmoresMovieManiamaybe you've got an answer as It's been a couple years, but he's hovering the drill over the pickups, and the drill noise is being caught by the pickups which makes the noise
@@DunmoresMovieManiaHere is an answer by Ed himself- "The drill on the “Poundcake” was a complete fluke/creative accident. We were playing, and I always like to play in the control room because I hate wearing headphones. Ken Deanne, who was my maintenance tech for my studio at the time, happened to be replacing a piece of outboard gear behind me while we were playing. He left the drill laying right in front of me as he was going to grab a replacement piece of gear. As I am sure you know, a guitar pickup is very similar to a microphone. I happened to grab the drill, and by sheer luck it was in the same key as the song. So I asked Alex to start “Poundcake” again from the beginning, and I used the drill over the pickup and scraped it on the strings for the intro. I also used it for a second or two during the song’s solo. It’s just one of those funny unplanned things that happen every so often. Since it was on the record, I ended up using the same drill every time we played the song live." blog.evhgear.com/2015/08/ask-eddie-using-a-drill-on-poundcake/
I love the comments that point out the unsung hero: Michael Anthony. The harmonies of VH are the real key to their success. Eddie's guitar was stunningly unique, but they'd have never gone anywhere if not for the beautiful harmonies.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate each individual musician here & what they each bring to the table here to make a collective experience. My god, Sammy's vocals live are just W O W hitting those high notes and screaming? How did the man NOT destroy his voice. I'm more of a Van Halen fan, rather than Van Hagar, but that was my loss because they were still awesome, just in a slightly different way, with Sammy.
I agree. That is why this band is timeless. Their immense talent just blended so well together. I appreciate both Van Halen and Van Hagar, though I feel like Sammy allowed the band to develop their music more.
This is simply fuckin awesome, this performance, this whole era of rock music. Love Eddie, Alex, Michael, Sammy and also David. Enjoy every recorded video and audio of these unique guys. Will these great memories last forever and be inspiration for all future generations.
Great times at West End back in the day. Was in that crowd. Also saw Kansas at a West End free concert. On Thursdays they did nickel long necks. Miss those days.
VH peaked with DLR after Fair Warning. VH 1 and 2, Women and Children, and Fair Warning were their best. They started to suck when Eddie decided that he wanted to be a keyboardist.
Edward and this band were musical athletes - make no mistake this is pure performance perfection - I would argue they’re at a peak here like Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps - just fingers and voices and God given energy and talent!
@@endezeichengrimm Both Roth and Hagar are very talented in their own right. Ross was a great showman and Sammy at a much better voice and better writer. but I get it if you are old enough to watch them from the beginning it's hard to see original members leave the band
@@jcedars4784 - Roth has a better studio voice, and Roth's lyrics are much more deep and intellectual. Sammy's voice is great on and off stage, and he writes simple basic lyrics. You made a great point about us old Rockers. Van Halen changed EVERYTHING in 1978. The original FOUR formed the best Hard Rock band the USA has ever produced. They saved Rock and Roll from Disco and Punk. By the end in 1984 they were the biggest Rock band on the planet! That was the best six years of my life. My friends and I are some of the most hardcore Van Halen fans you'll find. So seeing them turn into Van Hagar was heartbreaking. Then in 2007 the reunion, the tour. Next came 2012 and the awesome Album ADKOT, and tour to support it. And lastly, 2015 tour which was excellent. Eddie is so much better when he is sober and happy. Eddie, Dave , and Al are all old men now. Dave's concert voice gets worse every tour. But Dave is one of the greatest Front Men in Rock history. Dave is a true Rock Star. Dave is a legendary ENTERTAINER. Sammy is a great lead singer and an average professional guitarist (his words, not mine), that's all. I loved Sammy Hagar in 1982-83 when I saw him on the Three Lock Box Tour. He was awesome and so was the album. Just for me personally, Eddie/Alex mixed with Sammy is like trying to mix oil and water. have a great day!

If you watch the crowd there was a guy on the light pole. Well, he fell off, being drunk crashing down on his head, not a good thing.
It took the ambulance a while to part the crowd just to get to him.
Man, sometimes I miss being 20, not a care, my long hair, and having fun like that‼️ 🤙🏻
The last song brings happy tears to my eyes.
Must have been outta sight

And a more innocent time. I miss not having the "terrorist" and "covid" boogie-men bullshit. Cheers P[>
You lucky bastard 😮
This gig is one of those we should show our kids when we want to explain rock and roll to them: get up on a stage, no fancy lights, and simply kiss ass....what a great vibe this has....
....kick ass (sorry for typing mistake)

I second that.
The speeding it, you mean?
There is too little bass in the mix.
Not enough cowbell
No shit! Alex's drum sound was awesome and like the record. The whole band sounded like the record and Sammy's vocal was spot on.
Got out of work early to make it down a few hours before show started. Had a great spot under one of those trees standing on a planter box so no one in front of me. One of my favorite concerts ever because of the whole vibe that day. Everyone having fun and enjoying one of the best bands ever!

Alex Van Halen is an absolute monster. He’s so damn good.
Due to BONHAM
The brothers are like a train, so tight. A tightness only brothers can achieve.
I couldn’t agree with you more. He’s a total gem and should held up with Bonzo , Ringo and Moon
Great drummer and a sweet guy too ! He stopped and took time out for me to get a picture with him in 91 at Toronto International Airport. I'll never forget that
He is the best! The VERY BEST!
I'm a guitarist and always a fan of Eddie but man Alex is one of the greatest drummers ever . That guy is so solid on the skins.
Agreed man.
He's the most underrated rock drummer of all time!
You know this song is all about pu$$y right? 😉
Unbelievable. Sounds almost like a studio album.
You can see the sound system that they're using and by 1991 modern recording technology was pretty good so it's no wonder this should sound near their studio recording, Eddie did use cranked up amp's on the studio too in order top get the same live sound on the records !?
Exactly, and because they were talented, unlike most of today's artists that can't do anything without autotune and overdubs.
But Eddie IS THE KING OF SWING !
@@MC-yb5le I agree. I always liked Van Halen wit Sammy better than DLR. DLR is okay but doesn't have as good vocal ability as Sammy.

Van Halen is the best thing that ever happened to Sammy Hagar. No matter how successful he thought he was before that. VH took him to another level
well.. to be honest, he did make a name for himself before VH...
It's a two way street though.
They could have imploded without him.
It was like when two big waves in the ocean combined to make an even bigger Rogue wave.
Didn't really REALLY think about this until the last couple of weeks....friggin' Sammy Hagar has a kick ass voice!
Same here.
Yes he does RED ROCKER WFO!!
He has one of the greatest in R&R
There was No AutoTune back then That’s the Real Deal…
I know it brings out the hate, but Sammy is better than Dave. I’m sorry….
Damn, Sammy could sing circles around Dave but Dave was a showman. If you could combine both of them, you’d have the greatest frontman in music history.
You'd have Gary Cherone.
Hagar is the most boring voice and vocalist ever.
What a great time it was to be alive. I was 17 at the time and loving life. I had no idea how good we had it. Damn I miss it 😢
I've seen VAN HALEN, 11 times, with all 3 lead singers, I would've traded all that to be at this show !!! WOW!!
Awesome show for sure, we were about mid way back on the right side of the stage. Traffic was insane leaving. I personally liked seeing them on the 1984 tour better.
Michael Anthony might have the best high registered back up vocal ever.
Great bassist. Great backing vocalist. How he's been treated is criminal.
Roger Taylor of Queen, sorry but Michael Anthony cannot compare with the drummer of Queen lol
The Eagles original Bass player was amazing...check him out.

Quique Dillon Yea, it was a crazy day. They announced the event on the radio

It does look scary. I've been in crowds like that and as I get older I get a lot mire scared of them.

I love how Sammy is SO positive! He very often says things like "oh everything's alright, huh," and commenting how real and amazing everything is in the very moment! Constantly celebrating music, his fans, his band, the moment, and life itself! (Also being generous and compassionate towards his fans.)
and OF COURSE I love my main hero Eddie Van Halen! Amazingly positive person as well! And the most innovative, revolutionary, and influential guitarist who ever lived (in so many ways!)

Check Sammy out on the first Montrose album !

VH was never in the same league as Led Zeppelin but they had some brilliant at moments.

Hagar is and always has been a vocal beast.
In 1991 I thought they were old dudes. 2019 I'm 42 and I'm like look how young they were.
@K. Y. No thank you, I'm not in any hurry lol.

Unbelievable Eddie Van Halen was only 35 yo in 1991!
Eddie was 36 in 1991. In order for him to have been 35, this concert must have happened before January 26.
Awesome EVH
@@DunmoresMovieManiaHere is an answer by Ed himself-
"The drill on the “Poundcake” was a complete fluke/creative accident. Since it was on the record, I ended up using the same drill every time we played the song live."

Com'on, there's many bands as good as these guys. Why there's, uhm... and then there is, uhm...
Brent Woo BTS ????😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄
No f..... phone in the audience. Just celebrating the band. Where have all the good times gone...?
You are absolutely right.
Ask David Lee Roth ( where have all the good times gone..) ?
Straight to hell with all of our good memories of a simpler time and a still mighty Van Halen!
They were left on VH record Diver Down but that was right before 1984 dropped a Bomb on our heads! I was 18 playing Guitar in a band with long Hair Tight Leather pants mixed with spandex and denim just starting on having the best times of my life !! DLR fan but loved Sammy's solo work 3 Lock Box babe ...
This was 1991. If you had a smart phone here, you were from the future.
