For people from other countries: I went to the Van Halen show in the city of Porto Alegre, in the extreme south of Brazil, at the Gigantinho gymnasium, which was too crowded, in the middle of the summer of 1983. It was incredible. In the afternoon, we teenagers were in the Centro district where the hotel where the band stayed was located and David Lee Roth went out with friends to walk in the streets and went to a store in search of items for the camcorder. We barely found him there; the seller told us. Alex was walking alone on Rua dos Andradas and looking around. They took pictures and I have them.
It was two hours of a real firecracker of sound, lighting and rock for real. The blunder was that I took my friends and brother to, practically, behind the stage, having space (at that time) in front and in the side stands (I don't forgive myself for that).. The Van Halen guys (with the exception of Mike Anthony who went straight to the hotel) had dinner after the show at Gigantinho itself, in an adapted kitchen and dining room in the dressing rooms. Said they brought a cook from the USA. The drummer from Rio Grande do Sul who opened their show told me that they ate chicken a lot, played a lot, and spilled Chilean wine on the floor; they opened the bottles and threw the liquid on the floor. Of course not all, right.. Kkk
On the way out, we wait for them. First Alex Van Halen came out with a bottle of Brahma beer, alone, walking towards a vintage car, like Landau or Galaxy with driver, and greeted us; it was very good. Then it was Eddie's turn; also walking alone, just like him, shy, quiet... It was a car for each member of the band, separated... Ahhh, before, I saw their girlfriends or wives outside the Internacional gymnasium, some beautiful, super well dressed, in their early 20's... Well, now the last one: David left with six security guards around him, the only one, and very crazy, seemed to be high on drink, and looked at us emitting sounds with his voice. A hell of a charisma. Spectacular night; Porto Alegre had never seen anything like it and had already received, at its peak, Peter Frampton, Barry White and Rick Wakeman.
Van Halen was much more than music; it was something up, a real celebration for being alive!

Agreed. Problem with Roth is he so often just didn't sing the songs right. Leaving out whole versus like he was just in a world of his own. There's not much reason why he couldn't be a showman and at the same time sing the songs right. He almost never does in pretty much any footage I've seen.

Geez Lev, it appears I'm following you around on the VH youtube rabbit hole....2nd one of your posts I've seen in a week.
I've been checking out videos to see if I can figure out when Dave forgot how to try to sing. Up until recently I kinda thought he was never a great singer, but heard some stuff from 78 the other day that proved me wrong....he kicked ass in those days. Seems somewhere around 82 he became more concerned with karate kicks and spoken word versions of the melodies.
Thankfully EVH and AVH always kicked ass right up til the end.
      Hope you're well man

@@davewestner I have to agree! As I seem many times with both versions of the band(I wasn't into the the 3rd version) but yeah around 83' it had turned into the David Lee Roth show with Van Halen, and you could tell there was animosity on stage during the the 1984 tour as there was no interaction between the members onstage like there used to be! another thing I noticed was the end where they used to bow embracing each other, but on that night they all bowed all standing apart and I wasn't the only one that noticed even the review in the paper called out a few things and he said that stardom was getting to them, and it was barely a year later when Sammy joined! But I still have many great memories of that band I'm glad I got to see them!

I was lucky enough to get vh tix the summer between my 7th and 8th grade. It was the women and children first tour. They where playing at a small arena called the cape cod colosseum..which was pretty much a lg hockey rink. Bleachers all around and no floor seats. I had vh one , and I knu of a few songs on 2 and cradle and everybody wants some was just out on the radio. I really loved them but nothing prepared me for what I was about to see. Fresh off their first headlining tour, these guys where on fire. Freight train loud, very cohesive, it was obvious I was seeing something special ,right from jump. I believe they where at their peak, still a band of bros. Tons of improvisation, sometimes just bass and drums, sometimes bass ,drums and guitar, sometimes just Eddie and Alex, every possible combo. Later I found out this was something that was a staple of early tours. Anyway it changed my life, that nite I decided guitar would always b a part of my everyday. Over 35yrs later and I still make a decent living at it. This is America's greatest band, and Eddie is the most influential guitarist of my generation. U could argue kiss, which I love too. So let's say 1 and 1A as far as American bands go. Can anyone name a bigger one?

The ending of Hot For Teacher was written as early as 1977 while of course H4T wasn't released in its current form until 1984. There are demos of it.

DLR was an incredible front person for this band! I laugh when I see some talented people like Bucket Head with no front person to sell it, like EVH had. Long live rock!

Angela Desilva I think it's pretty awesome how Dave can speak all these different languages and connect with fans all over the world. Spanish is only one of the languages he knows. He also knows Portuguese and Japanese -- to name a few. The man's mind is constantly moving. Cheers
