My dad was a former sound engineer for Sammy through his entire solo career and 5150 with van halen.... 2 years ago his house burnt down in a wild fire and Sammy donated to help him and my mom get back on their feet!... Sounds like your dad is a good guy too if people are good with helping him. Hope dad & mom are ok and yeah, Sammy always comes across as a a genuinely good dude.
I met him and Eddie in Cabo on Sammy’s birthday.. Sammy walked up to the bar ordered shots and asked if I would like some Cabo wabo. Started a convo about nothing. He noticed a tattoo on my arm …the only tattoo I have…it’s the VH forever logo with my flight medic wings spread out underneath..one side of the wind had firm rigid feathers…the other side has ruff, irregular, not even, irregular…he recognized the VH logo and asked about the wings…I explained and he really reacted…as we bullshitted Eddie came up and he showed my tattoo…talked it up, we drank for 15 minutes and they went on stage, it might be one of the greatest rock n roll moments in my life. I drank for free for several hours and loved it all! In contrast I was once in a traffic jam in Los Angeles and noticed a white rolls Royce in the lane next to me creeping up..closer it got I saw the women in the car and a long haired driver acting crazy…closer it got I realized it was DLR in the flesh.. as the traffic stalled along…I found my VH cassette and a pen and in a slow moment of traffic I jumped out and hollered sign my cassette! …he grabbed the pen and smiled and tried to half ass sign it….unrecognizable but to me it was EPIC….love both artists! 🃏👍🏁🎭🍿🍿🍿🍿
12 years ago my US Marine son stationed in Hawaii sends me a pic in the middle of the night. It’s him and Sammy in a bar. Seconds later the phone rings and Sammy says “Good morning dad!” We talked for about five or so minutes he’s telling me how much he appreciated my son’s service (he just got back from a tour in Afghanistan) and then the dude starts asking about the rest of my family and how they’re doing. No shit this guy’s the real deal. Really really nice.

Our family was a recipient of emergency funds from Sammy Hagar in Hawaii. We had an emergency medical flight for our daughter from Maui to Oahu. The hospital social worker gave us a $300 check to help with expenses for whatever the family needs when away from home on a different island and a card to write a thank you to Sammy Hagar. Brings tears to my eyes remembering this. So it is exactly how he tells it. Money used directly to the people in need. God Bless him and his Ohana!

Genuinely inspired me today, my first time checking this show out. The frequency that Sam puts out there is the best… positive and no fluff. Thanks for one of the best interviews with him ever! Great job all.
I was always a DLR fan, but watching great interviews with Sammy over and over and over again, has really enlightened me, changed my mind about this man. He seems like a fantastic, down to earth person, a happy person, as I get older I realize more and more exactly, how paramount that is in life! This is a man I'd love to hang out with, have a great cigar and some fantastic Tequila with, just sipping, smoking and jawing all night long with! Good times and good people, is what it's all ever been about! Thanks for the vid guys! Sammy Steve-O, you got a standing invitation any time you're in Toronto for a smoke, a drink and a chill in the Park! For the people, by the people! P.S. Let's shoot for a late spring, early summer or early fall, for the best weather conditions!
My first concert was Monsters of Rock at LA coliseum, 1988. Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, and VH. Two riots. And that was the day I fell in love with Sammy and VH. (And yep, the LA show was postponed one day cause Sammy was sick.)
Thank you Steve-O -- loved this! Hopefully Bob Weir will join you soon. I also vote for the other TOOL members to make an appearance (Adam, Danny, Justin) - cheers.
Stevo, excellent podcast. I’ve been seeing Sammy Hagar shows since 19 82 and loved everyone of them. He’s got to be the most gracious rockstar in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. He’s a perfect example that nice guys don’t always finish last ! I grew-up in Etiwanda, next door to Fontana CA where Sammy grew up. He ALWAYS put on a great show when he played in SanBernardino at the Orange Pavilion …Lots of memories there.
Been a lifelong Van Halen fan but I only got the chance to see them in 2004 in Hamilton, Ontario with Sammy. Honestly, I wasn't a huge Sammy fan. Had huge respect for the guy but I didn't give 2 shits about the "Van Hagar" era til I saw them live. HOLY FACK. Sammy won me over within ONE song. Eddie was drinking all day and they had to pour the guy onto the stage so right off the bat I was NOT IMPRESSED to say the least. It was also wunna the first shows where I paid over $100 for a ticket.. it would have been a complete TRAINWRECK but Sammy fackin Hagar literally SAVED that show. Not only saved it but MADE it. The guy signed autographs WHILE playing songs. He was dead on. His voice, his playing, the fan interaction. Meanwhile, Eddie's big "guitar solo" was performed laying on his back, making nothihg but NOISE. I BOOED EVH, my idol. My respect for Mr. Sammy Hagar went through the roof that night. LOVE that guy. Keep on keepin on Sammy! You deserve every drop of success you've worked your ass off for.
I recognized Sammy standing outside a Hard Rock Cafe in L.A. years ago. Even though I was a bit hammered, I still remember it like it was yesterday. I had actually just purchased 5150 on cassette (I was still carrying it in a shopping bag). I struck up a conversation, trying to work up the nerve to ask for an autograph. The guy was easy to talk to, totally down to earth. We talked for a good ten minutes about random stuff, before he finally said he had to leave. Before he hopped into a cab, he graciously signed my cassette. It was only after I got back to my hotel hours later that I noticed it was signed Steve Wilcox. Oh, well...
Sammy has paid his dues and lived to tell the tales. Cheers Sammy ! This interview is one of the best interviews I have ever seen with anyone. Cheers Steve O.
I've been blessed to be a friend of Sammy. He's the most positive charge, I've ever gotten from anyone. He was a neighbor and the opposite of a Downer. I always got stoked to see him.
What a great interview! Both Steve-O and Sammy are so genuine, and have seen so much. Both were obviously enjoying the conversation and Steve-O knows how it's done! Fantastic!!
Absolutely fantastic interview. Sammy is correct, as a massive Van Halen fan, we have been completely pissed on. How can you ignore 4 x #1 albums in a row for fuck sake. Crazy. Great to see them finally re-release the Sammy era Van Halen albums. RIP EVH - thank you for the music.
It's not just the tequila money. Sammy has always been very business smart. Van Halen sold more merchandise than anybody.. coffee cups, teddy bears.. their shows basically had a vh Walmart of merch. Bit he got heavily into real-estate Years ago. Bought land and houses and waited 5 years and flipped them at triple the price. He was diversified before it became popular among Rick and rap stars ..
Sammy Hagar brings back so many great memories, love all his music. Steve-O you knocked this interview out of the ball house. Thank you Sammy for all the great music, and thank you Steve-O for having the #1 podcast of all time. ( if it's not #1 - it will be )
Sammy is the man. I saw him in Montrose when they first started at the Baltimore Civic Center in Baltimore, Maryland and with Van Halen at the Capital Center in Largo, Maryland. Both were amazing shows. The man can sing!!!!!!!!
This was GREAT. Been a fan of VH since day 1 and recently (the last couple of days) started indulging myself back into their music. Started watching some vids and just watched the Roth - Hagar history with the band. Came across this in the side panel not knowing you had a rolling podcast. Always a fan of you Steve-O and truly humbled by your Epic biography doc and your truly astonishing transformation. This was one of the most entertaining hours I have had in a very long time. Sammy has to be the most genuine individual I have ever come across, the other comments I have read are indicative of that. A very insightful interview and truly a delight to listen to. Thanks Steve-O, Sammy and all your crew. Man that was great. Be well, be healthy and keep rollin'.
It's interesting that Sammy mentions St. Louis as a "big city" where he makes a lot of money...St. Louis is only the 70th largest city in the US, but St. Louis f*cking LOVES Sammy Hagar & always has. He can play StL as often as he wants and he'll sell every ticket.
Sammy Hagar is one of the most down known to Earth. Cool friendly people. And when he runs into somebody that he can't get along with. He's kind of surprise because he's always gotten along with people, and he's lived a long time in this business. And when he broke up with Van Halen, he couldn't really understand why but he just went along with it. And now he's got AA rum company. And he also still sanks and tours. And he's always thinking about other people and helping and donating money to charities , and he also has a A radio DJ show where he puts on music. That means things to him on a theme basis. And it, it's really interesting and I try to listen to it every week in my areaanyway always likes the guy and not getting any younger but he's not gonna get stuff at any point I can't see it. Best of luck red rocker
*Sammy was so humble to answer each question honestly. About not selling so many albums to start, etc. Try and ask Kiss, Gene or Paul, and answers are they are best thing since sliced bread* Steve-O got lost when Sammy talked about Music Catalogs and Resurgance, he just says, right right right, yeah, uhm hum. Needs rewatch and see where he can do better. to engage in answers, and for follow up questions, right right right, implies host no ,longer interested in that subject, answer
GREAT INTERVIEW!! Watched the ENTIRE THING! TECH TIPS: PLEASE focus on the guests and not the microphones! Also, If you shoot in 4k you can push in without any loss when you're pushing them out at 1080p.
That’s a great interview. Well done all round. I first heard Sammy on the ‘Footloose’ album, which was the first brand new record I bought as a kid. Fast forward to ‘88 and I bought ‘OU812’ on cassette when it came out. It was a bit confusing, as I’d bought ‘1984’ on tape earlier that same year and obviously there was a different singer. With no internet and minimal press (well, hardly anything that I saw as a 14 year old), the only info I had about Van Halen was in the liner notes and the music on the tapes. Then I worked backwards and got ‘5150’ on vinyl; then filled in the gaps by copying the DLR albums; then copied my mate’s ‘F.U.C.K’; then bought the live album, then copied ‘Balance’. My favourite songs featuring Sammy are probably ‘Mine All Mine’, ‘Cabo Wabo’, Feels So Good’, ‘When It’s Love’, ‘Love Walks In’, ‘5150’, ‘Dreams’. I finally got to see VH live on the VH3 tour with Gary Cherone in Auckland, New Zealand and I loved it.
@@maryellenrieger1874 Ha ha awesome! What’s your favourite song on the album? Mine was probably ‘I’m Free (Heaven Helps The Man)’. Thinking about it, this year I’ve played a couple of the ‘Footloose’ album songs on gigs: ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ in an acoustic duo and ‘Let’s Hear It For The Boy’ in a yacht rock band. Nothing to do with Sammy though. Also I remember the first time I saw the ‘Live Without A Net’ video: end of ‘89, the day our band won the school talent quest and we went back to one of the guys’ place to drink beer and watch the vid. I demanded to borrow it, then copied it to audio tape. Just re-reading my comment above, I’ve gotta apologise to VH for all the copying (or dubbing, as we called it) I did of their albums as a teenager. Rest assured I bought the CDs when I could afford it in my twenties.
It's been such a short time since Steve-O was critiquing everything he did in his first videos to this podcast becoming must listen. This was fucking awesome.
I've just very recently come to realize how great of a person Sammy is. He's now my favorite rock star because Nikki Sixx is too neurotic for my taste.
The first time I saw Sammy was in '78 or so. He opened for Boston and was so hot, running around in the rafters, we thought he'd blow Boston away...He didn't...but I remember his show better. Love you, Sammy!
What a great guy! I commend you for your work with people in need. It always seems like there is some sort of drama within Van Halen . It's always been that way. Glad to here the real story and real events. It clarifies a lot of things .great great interview. Glad you are getting a lot of big time music artists. Makes for good content .
They really REALLY need to remaster the Van Hagar albums. They came out during the period of time where trends in audio production were... less than stellar. Let's just say the band sounded 100x better live. Remasters of those albums would make me so happy.
@@bobbbobb4663 More about Clarity. I have a really good audio setup with studio monitors and the Van Hagar era albums I'm sad to say have some of the worst fidelity of any big name rock albums I've ever heard. And this is coming from someone who loves Van Hagar to death, especially live.
@@HillcrestGames I just compared Van Halen’s 78 release to UFO Obsession (produced by Ron Nevison) also released in 1978. Air Pods Pro running EQE with 0.65 ms of delay between channels. Night and day difference that I don’t know you could fix with a simple remaster as the production quality of the UFO album is clearly superior.
David Lee Roth was in Van Halen from 1972 until 1985. 1978 is when they released their first album, but they were together since 1972 playing gigs and recording demos.
The Balance tour was my favorite live guitar sound of Ed's. It's an acquired taste....but the wet dry wet cabinet setup he was running with the Peavy 5150 and his Ernie Ball guitars ( which were impeccably made to the utmost quality standards!) Ed also was running an Eventide H3000 on the wet cabs for a slight detune chorus effect for widening the tone a little, twin Rolan d SDE 3000 delay units for time based echo, and lastly a Lexicon PCM 70 for for some reverb. Man his live tone that tour in 1995 was just.... DAMN!!! I wish I could have been to one of those shows. I did see the 98 Gary Cherone tour in Boston, that was a great show as well!

Genuinely inspired me today, my first time checking this show out. The frequency that Sam puts out there is the best… positive and no fluff. Thanks for one of the best interviews with him ever! Great job all.
One of the greatest interviews I’ve seen on any platform. Loved it from start to finish. Thanks Steve-O and crew 😊
Talk about a dude that’s lived life to the fullest. Best attitude EVER! Thank you so much for this! Enjoyed every moment. 👍🏼
Love Sammy. Probably have seen him in concert more than anyone because he'll play ANYWHERE. Such a great human being. Great interview guys.
Sammy Hagar is what every alcoholic strives to achieve.
Class Act
Sammy's one of the greats; genuine guy, genuine talent.
I've always loved Sammy . He's a real badass . Great musician , great singer, great energy , down to earth and aging like no other. Rock on Sammy.
Thank you Steve-O -- loved this! Hopefully Bob Weir will join you soon. I also vote for the other TOOL members to make an appearance (Adam, Danny, Justin) - cheers.
Bobby Weir is the man, man. I wish Chief smokin moccasin could be around to see it
Stevo, excellent podcast.
Knocking it out of the park Steve O!! Maynard and Sammy podcasts? Legendary!!
Sammy was my first concert, and i didn't even know him.
Hagar opened for Boston in Bakersfield. I became an instant fan. What a run...
One the absolute best free flowing organic interviews ever! This is pure Gold right here!
I've been blessed to be a friend of Sammy. He's the most positive charge, I've ever gotten from anyone. He was a neighbor and the opposite of a Downer. I always got stoked to see him.
Its crazy to think Sammy was nearly 40 years old when he started in Van Halen, and nearly 50 when they disbanded.
What a great interview! Both Steve-O and Sammy are so genuine, and have seen so much. Both were obviously enjoying the conversation and Steve-O knows how it's done! Fantastic!!
Our high school basketball team used to blast the Standing Hampton cassette in the locker room before games. Great memories!!!
I think this is the best way someone has dealt with the fanboy steve-o. For me, probably the greatest episode so far, and that is saying something!
My mom was a full time nurse and still wr had to go to the food banks. They really helpful.
I stood at Giant's Stadium in the Medowlands and sang with 90 thousand people...."It's got what it takes". Great memory!!
That live Balance album will always be my favorite. So underrated with songs such as Feelin, seventh seal, and not enough. Such an epic live album👍
For sure!
Love seventh seal!!!!!!!
@@staceyroberts3468 That whole live concert is on RUclips. From the Balance tour. Recorded in Toronto. Great show. My favorite.
love you sammy for your humanity, we need more people in this world like you.
Great episode. Sammy is quite the guy. Love hearing how much he loves and cares for his community.
Sammy Hagar brings back so many great memories, love all his music. Steve-O you knocked this interview out of the ball house. Thank you Sammy for all the great music, and thank you Steve-O for having the #1 podcast of all time. ( if it's not #1 - it will be )
Unbelievable the man is 75. He is a rock star in every sense of the word. Along with the ones who can still do it. Steven Tyler, Roth, etc, etc…
Nothing but love for Sammy here in the San Bernardino region!
I am so glad you guys noticed instantly the Vinnie Paul, coincidence.
RIP Darrel and Vinnie.
Mark my words! This man will live atleast 100-years old and still enjoying the beach and his tequila!
Sammy is the man. I saw him in Montrose when they first started at the Baltimore Civic Center in Baltimore, Maryland and with Van Halen at the Capital Center in Largo, Maryland. Both were amazing shows. The man can sing!!!!!!!!
Huge fan of Van Hagar and Montrose, never been a big Sammy solo fan. A real stand up dude. Smart, charitable, down to earth. Just a good dude.
I saw Sammy and VH in 1992 in Little Rock, Ar (April 8 I believe) and it was phenomenal! Sammy the man!
I've seen Sammy a bunch of times going back about 30 years. He never disappoints.
Didn't know Steve O was so much into rock....Love this guy even more
I was at the reunion show in Moline, Illinois back in 2004! Great show!
I'd argue Sammy Hagar is one of the coolest rock stars of all time
It's interesting that Sammy mentions St. Louis as a "big city" where he makes a lot of money...St. Louis is only the 70th largest city in the US, but St. Louis f*cking LOVES Sammy Hagar & always has. He can play StL as often as he wants and he'll sell every ticket.
SAMMY IS FUCKIN 75 YEARS OLD!??? I would've guessed 59 TOPS by his looks. That is fuckin WILD
Dude has obviously took care of his self and has great genes. Meanwhile I am ashamed of myself at 51. Lol.
I never knew much about Sammy Hagar, but holy crap stand up guy.
Hagar forgot to mention... it wasn't just Van Halen's 1984 album (with Jump) that sold a ton, the first album with Roth (the debut) also went diamond.
Sammy is the coolest! Great interview!! 🔥
Sammy Hagar is a legend! Us St. Louisans know the man well!
I can't believe Sammy is 75. Not only do I refuse to believe time has crept up that far, but he doesn't look it at all.
One of the best Hagar interviews I’ve watched. Phenomenal
Damn, I watch a lot of podcasts and steve-os guest are always the best surprise.
Hard to believe Sammy is going to be 80 in 5 years! Damn, we should all look as youthful at that age. Amazing!🤘
Gotta love Sammy! What a legend
GREAT INTERVIEW!! Watched the ENTIRE THING!
TECH TIPS: PLEASE focus on the guests and not the microphones! Also, If you shoot in 4k you can push in without any loss when you're pushing them out at 1080p.
What an interview. I have loved him since to 80s
50:30 It’s worth listening to Van Halen’s cover of Won’t Get Fooled Again live in 5150 studios - it’s great!
I also first heard Sammy on Footloose soundtrack too!
@@MisterWade74 cool story! The Girl Gets Around is my favorite, followed closely by I'm Free Heaven Helps The Man
It's been such a short time since Steve-O was critiquing everything he did in his first videos to this podcast becoming must listen. This was fucking awesome.
Great interview...I could listen to Sammy all day
I've just very recently come to realize how great of a person Sammy is. He's now my favorite rock star because Nikki Sixx is too neurotic for my taste.
This interview is fantastic. In every way. Thank you Steve-O and team 🙏🏽
The first time I saw Sammy was in '78 or so. He opened for Boston and was so hot, running around in the rafters, we thought he'd blow Boston away...He didn't...but I remember his show better. Love you, Sammy!
Sammy is awesome. This was a joy to watch. Thanks, Steve-O!
"Every Rose Has Its Thorn", the easiest (boring) song you could ever play on the guitar, but the lyrics are deep.
I love Sammy! I've been a fan of his for years. Great podcast!
Sammy is looking fantastic for 75. Still sounds great live.
Awesome interview, Steve O. Sammy is one hell of a guy. ❤
Spammy never had a platinum album until he joined VH in 1985 kids! FACTS!! Diamond Dave has two diamond records Spammy!
What a great guy! I commend you for your work with people in need. It always seems like there is some sort of drama within Van Halen . It's always been that way. Glad to here the real story and real events. It clarifies a lot of things .great great interview. Glad you are getting a lot of big time music artists. Makes for good content .
Sammy just seems like he truly appreciates life. Giving to local communities. Always smiling doesn’t boast just seems like a great human
I know him. He doesn’t.
Sammy is a class act. Great episode!
They really REALLY need to remaster the Van Hagar albums. They came out during the period of time where trends in audio production were... less than stellar. Let's just say the band sounded 100x better live. Remasters of those albums would make me so happy.
Agree as long as the remaster is not simply to compress them even more, I.e, loudness war.
Oh ...and Sammy was alright too...😂😂😂😂 . I love Sammy!
I’m a fan of Sammy first heard him on our local radio station 107.7 the bone ! In the Bay Area & then I got see him perform about 4 years ago in concord California ! Cheers everyone
Truly one of the best Hagar interviews.
Sam, you forgot to mention VH1 and 1984 are diamond, 10 million sales.
