J is a legit good dude. I ran Into him after a beatles tribute concert at the fox like 12 years ago. My gf at the time asked if we could hang out and the guy took us to 2 bars and the strip club in his limo for 2 hrs. It was super cool. He bought us a couple drinks and hung out and talked to us like we were his homies. They dropped us back off at our car and that was that. Super fucking cool guy.

It especially comes into perspective when you realize that, Jive Records, the first label who EVER signed them back in the post-Ringmaster/Riddlebox days, absolutely refused to circuit their records outside of Detroit, let alone Michigan. They were told that they think their type of music is something only people from Detroit would understand/enjoy. When ICP realized that, they threw a dart at a map of the US and it landed in Texas. Joe, Rob, Joey, Legz Diamond, Billy Bill, Rude Boy, and Alex got in a van and drove to Texas with four boxes full of Riddlebox CD's and cassettes. They then split up into two teams, one went to Dallas and the other went to Houston. After less than a month not only did they completely sell all four boxes but they had record stores in both Dallas and Houston calling Jive to order more.
Jive congratulated them, said what they did was amazing, and then pulled the exact same shit by refusing to distribute anywhere outside Michigan or Texas because they still thought it was a "niche" thing.
So, Alex started shopping around for another label and found Hollywood. Under HEAVY scrutiny ICP recorded Great Milenko for Hollywood, only for it to be immediately pulled off the shelves the very same day it got released. After a legal battle, Island Def Jam decided to sign them, but ICP had re-record the entirety of Great Milenko again for numerous reasons (one being that Hollywood made them censor themselves heavily, while Island Def Jam wanted them to be as edgy as possible because they wanted to take advantage of what they thought was going to be a huge media blowup when they revealed ICP's record got pulled).
So yeah they were signed to labels, but every single label they were on (including Island Def Jam) worked against them to varying degrees rather than help promote them which is - y'know - the entire point of having a label, and at worst hindered them completely forcing them to still do it all on their own with or without a label.

I feel ya, Violent J. I was diagnosed with heart failure in April of 2022. I had had this swelling in my right foot for awhile, had been trying to find out what was causing it but the doctor didn't know because the tests they did didn't show anything abnormal. Then my right calf started swelling up and I became severely winded, like you described. One night all of a sudden, I could not breathe. I knew I would be dead if I didn't call 911. The ambulance came, I couldn't even go answer the door, they had to force their way in with a cop's help. By the time I was taken to the ambulance I had blacked out, first time in my life, very scary. Woke up in the ER, on a ventilator to help me breathe. Finally I found out what was wrong with me. In my case, I inherited heart failure, it runs on my mom's side. That is what killed her, her twin brother, and several sisters. Thank goodness we are still alive, VJ! Take care of yourself and long life to you.

I think people just see the paint, the attitude in the music videos/events, and the music itself and assume they are full of hate.
Like if you really listen it's honestly just like they give their intrusive thoughts an outlet through their music. 90% of their songs are a miss for me personally. But I have always been a fan of Shaggy and J because of the things they say outside of their "character" setting where they can express their own personal outlooks. Then you start to see, nah, these dudes are full of love.

I’m from Los Gatos. There weren’t many ICP fans at my high school when I went there. I was bullied, harassed and eventually got my GED. I grew up poor in a affluent area. Listening to ICP was how I coped with my feelings and emotions, and I’m 40 now and in hindsight songs like Willie Bubba had a lot more meaning beneath the lyrics that I related to and understood. There’s so many metaphors about hate and racism and hypocrisy and the lyrics/ songwriting has been fearlessly calling it out way before it was cool to do that…
and I love them for that.
