    The other graphical comparison videos mentioned in the video are in the description. I also skipped the progression as my conclusion was they were fairly similar, the script that I had is also in the description.
    Thanks to everyone for watching!

    I never really considered the art direction differences between the games. Ill always just chalked up the difference in feeling because I'm just not a kid in absolute awe exploring space anymore. This video made it pretty revealing that d1 graphics honestly still hold up today and actually is leagues ahead of d2.

    I felt this since day one of D2 being out and I've never seen it so well articulated. It's all the little things that helped complete the immersion of the original game. I do really enjoy D2 but it's things like this that make the difference if you're playing it a lot.

    For the way I see it. D2 is a lot darker in comparison to D1, and i think that is down overall tone... With the Darkness being less discovered in D1 there were vibrant, unexplored areas that are brimming with Gods.
    In the KF raid, its brimming with life because you're yet to slay Oryx, but with it in D2 it is being replayed from like an augmented reality, hence why it is "darker". Same with VoG, its less about the vibrancy and the changes through out the environment because you are in an AR for it.
    The moon not having Crota anymore and focuses more on scarlet keep... how that has changed and the surrounding lingers of the Darkness from the witness. The Iss being destroyed is more like a reason from the invasion of Ghaul/Red Legion. And the areas around the cosmodrone being more barren would mark place to further invasions of the Red Legion.
    Yes, the ripple effects of the sparrow is horrid and not seeing the rainbow effects from the water, it sucks not having them.

      yup. Long and gone, replaced by business leaders and new or untalented devs because instead of investing in nurturing talent inside the studio over time Bungie preferes to swap them out often for "inclusivity" and outsource a lot of the work.

      The artistic vision was there but the story vision wasn’t. Having to develop the story more after Oryx is what wore it down. The pyramids though greatly different still had the same feeling somewhat but the final nail in the coffin was the modern writers adding the Witness.
      Everything became completely artsy fartsy after the Witness.

    Some key things to note is that D1 and most of early D2 (through the end of Forsaken's year) was made by Bungie with HEAVY help from 2-3 Activision studios that were basically working on the games full-time, year-round. Now Bungo is doing it all themselves.
    I don't think the VOG and Kings Fall locations are fair comparisons because in D2 they are small isolated bubbles that only contain the raid, those locations in D1 are a part of full-blown destinations. Given the lack of support and funding for the devs by management as well as the mandatory, relentless seasonal content train and inevitable annual expansion crunch periods with release delays, it makes sense that these specific locations suffered and as a result don't have all of the bells and whistles that they did in D1. I think Cosmodrome and the Moon also suffered for the same reason. Cosmodrome I think is the only destination to have its day-night cycle and weather effects removed completely.
    I think the Tower, the Farm, EDZ, Nessus, Io, Europa, Moon, Titan have Day-Night/rotation and weather effects cycles. Tangled Shore, Neomuna, and Savathun's throne world don't have day-night cycles because they're static locations with static light sources/atmosphere. I can't remember if Neomuna has weather, but I definitely remember Tangled Shore had a cloud cover cycle. Sava's Throne World was supposed to have raid, but people hated the deep weather effects on Europa so I think it got axed in the massive restructuring of the future of the game in the Beyond Light era. Dreaming City has 3 flavors of lighting and environment changes for the 3 week curse rotation, no weather types there aside from the deep fog in the entry area.
    Bungie's executives didn't give a shit about the quality of the game or what the players or devs wanted, just that it keep blasting content to justify adding more MTX/Event stuff every fiscal quarter. Hopefully now that Sony has been on the record being highly critical of Bungie's executives and general management of the company, the devs will be respected a little more and will actually get to build the stuff that they want to build. Like even eververse ornaments have been broken for YEARS and are only getting fixed this year as shown in this week's TWAB.
    I just hope they get the breathing room and support to go back over the destinations and improve them and make them more immersive.

    • @Skm00n
      @Skm00n 15 часов назад +2

      There are barely any weather cycles in d2. Europa has a barebone storm / no storm cycle and the Edz rarely has rain. Io is gone by the way

    I'm still miffed that the Cosmodrome doesn't have a day/night cycle in D2. That was one of its most visual characteristics in D1, and yet its absent in D2. I wish Bungie would do a pass on Cosmodrome in D2, but I won't get my hopes up.
    If D2 could lean more into D1's art style then we'd be on the right track

    I've noticed specifically anti aliasing (when comparing at 1080p) and depth of field are significantly better in D1. Also in some situations lighting and saturation. D2 seems to have better volumetric fog effects and light rays / shafts. I think weapon effects do look better in D2, but the main problem with them is that they are much less intense.

  • @SungurEge
    @SungurEge 23 часа назад +6

    Great video! Not gonna lie, I was expecting hyperbolic statements despite already knowing about the "downgrade" in D2, but you have done a good job in keeping your arguments based more on facts. There definitely is a stark difference between the two.
    I wonder if this is because all areas and their art direction in D1 were handcrafted and curated by the "campaign team" (not that this is a static team each time, but you know what I mean) or should I say these areas were created with the purpose of being used in the main narrative in a more cinematic manner while their D2 counterparts are their "upcycled" versions were simply "content" rather than narrative-heavy areas, therefore many visual flairs (not technical details) got lost in translation for "optimization" and "seamless porting" purposes.
    This may also be a side effect of the D2 vanilla's art direction (also the narrative tone at times, most noticeable with the public event dialogues on Nessus and EDZ) being more childish due to the Activision meddling and how it was rumoured that they were heavily focus testing it for a more family-friendly audience.
    If you look at the D2 vanilla campaign (Red War), the art direction is strong there so I am guessing many people who were responsible for the D1 version of these areas were developing that entire D2 vanilla campaign experience.
    Another reason could be that, since both the entirety of D1 and vanilla D2 were primarily developed for PS4 and Xbox One, they sacrificed more "art direction" related visual elements in order to enhance the technical side of the visuals, otherwise they wouldn't have had enough performance overhead to work with and wouldn't have been able to justify a new 60 dollar purchase for looking too similar to D1.
    I don't know, I wish we could hear a veteran someone from Bungie commenting on why this has happened. I love both games. Still, that Court of Oryx comparison alone is sad. The D1 version is so moody and D2 version is simply flat.

    • @Invizeron
      @Invizeron  22 часа назад +2

      Yeah, I agree with your analysis. It seems to be a mix of things. I can't really say why the art direction took such a change from D1 to D2 (post Red War). The original D2 release on PS4/Xbox One you brought up, is probably a big reason, then once the art direction & style was set, its kinda hard to change.
      Another reason is likely with the content schedule, and having to keep up with all the seasonal releases. Constantly pushing out a lot of content, generally results in a loss of quality (quantity over quality).
      If I ever get the chance to talk with Bungie dev who was in an upper art position I'd definitely ask.

    D1 Day 1 player here ... this is true - D1 was alive, things felt intentional, meaningful. Some locations used to actually creep me out and sometimes str8 up scare me.
    D2... not at all. Textures look better, everything is sharper ... but it looks dead, hospital level clean, like some Chinese copy paste MMRPG clone. Maybe because Bungie just took D1 models, re used them by slapping new textures on them and that's it - just models, screw everything else. As much as I love Destiny - I'm glad to see D2 dead. It's been in a zombie state for a while now.

    Most of the well detailed stuff of early D2 is also gone.
    They removed a lot of lighting effects, textures and models including sounds from 2017’s version off the game.
    When Forsaken came in the textures were going to take a dip that no one knew about due to enjoying the gameplay and story.
    Around this time is when they started to take away more of the originality that made Destiny. Then more retcons came in.

    pretty poor comparison imo as you are comparing how destinations look in d1 vs their equivelant in d2. Kind of reductive to take a fraction of d2's destinations and call its overall art direction inferior, since europa throne world and even neomuna all excel in lighting and overall vibes. Also both games use the same weapon animations with some exceptions being the auto rifle and hand cannon reload animations. Overall i think both games excel in the vibe they were going for , with d1 being a post apocalyptic scifi epic , and d2 being an outright space opera with much bigger scale. The sound comparison and critisism is spot on tho.

    • @ringomandingo1015
      @ringomandingo1015 3 часа назад

      That’s the thing though, D2 has atmospheres that are all over the place that don’t fit the setting that Destiny takes place. Remember that D2 is like a year or two timeline wise from D1, we’re still in post apocalypse
      Places like Neomuna don’t fit in that setting despite being cool. It’s all aesthetic but there’s no deeper meaning or message being conveyed in the architecture or setting. Even in places like Europa that are a little run down on the outside, the clean insides don’t tell you what happened to the locale. You would figure there would be more Stasis ice, frozen exos, and signs of experiment failures outside of the Perdition lost sector.

    • @Invizeron
      @Invizeron  Минуту назад

      The points brought up here by both of you are fair. I compared locations within both games as thats the best way to make direct comparisons. However, you're right I should've further mentioned Destiny 2 has other locations not within Destiny 1 that do a good job of creating atmosphere. But then that brings up why is D2's art direction inconsistent? The weapon animations you're also correct, as they're identical, with a few exceptions. I point out the exceptions as they don't fit with Bungie's rule of not crossing the center (to not block gameplay) and its just odd those animations were done like that. But I should've mentioned that more specifically.
      With regards to the replier's points. The Neomuna point is a good one, while the area looks awesome, it doesn't thematically fit within the universe of Destiny; a post apocalypse where everything was destroyed. Its one of the common reason's for Lightfall's hate, the story, setting, and whatnot are all over the place. The city is fine in D2 but it needed a different set up and explanation.

  • @TzrcWolf_
    @TzrcWolf_ 20 часов назад +4

    I’d say it depends on what it is. I’m personally a fan of almost everything in D2 over D1 as it feels a lot more polished, but I do think some thematics in D1 are just better than D2: one example is the opening mission of D1, the lighting just seems better off. Same as the moon in my opinion outside of the scarlet keep region. Another moment I’d consider though that is the biggest for me is the reveal of the ketch as you make your way through the cosmodrome.
    Game design, audio, mission structure, and content structure are FAR FAR FAR better in D2 than it is D1. There is no contest.

    • @Skm00n
      @Skm00n 15 часов назад

      Seriously? You think content structure is better in d2? So getting your playerbase accustom to a lower quality over time every time so much so that now you pay more than double for half if not less of the content given with repetitive, rushed and unpolished content is better? You think that watering down the game so it "appeals to a wider audience" which basically means ripping the flavor, uniqueness and soul of the game out is better? Damn

    • @TzrcWolf_
      @TzrcWolf_ 10 часов назад +1

      @@Skm00n absolutely think it’s better. Destiny 1 had absolutely nothing to hold the game over in between DLCs outside of one QOL/content update + holiday events. Taken King had the April update and Rise of Iron had age of triumph. In between that it was flat nothing. D2 DLCs are objectively better in every sense to D1 DLCs outside of strike amount and pvp maps and vendor refreshes. Seasons give so much more content than what rise of iron or d1 year 1 could ever hope to give as well. So yes, I do think that the content structure of D2 is leagues above D1 for what the game is.
      Both are very different games; but seasons offer so much more variety and fun experiences than random stuff months after a DLC in D1.

    • @TzrcWolf_
      @TzrcWolf_ 10 часов назад +1

      @@Skm00n also no offense, but this is utter BS. We are getting objectively higher quality with episodes than we ever got with seasons. We got 3 amazing battlegrounds, 2 seasonal activities, both of which are fun, and by far the highest quality exotic mission by scope even if it isn’t the best mission. We pay 100 dollars a year as opposed to the 30-40, but the amount of content is incomparable. So saying that we are paying double for half is utter Bs regardless of whatever fucked logic you try to use to spin the truth. A D1 DLC may have given a few extra strikes and PVP maps, but we get higher quality raids, we get dungeons, we get ~10 unique activities every year from seasons. Multiple vendor refreshes gear wise throughout the year amounting to pretty much the same. New perks every season. Changes to exotics and subclasses every season. And so so so much more than we would have gotten in even stuff like age of triumphs or the April update over the span of a year.

Then you criticize D2 for being vinrant while praising D1 for being dark and gloomy. • @Invizeron
      @Invizeron  20 часов назад +4

      I appreciate the comment and concern. However, I made this video an un-biased as possible, there were numerous portions I edited or removed as I thought my original commentary would be misunderstood or interpreted as biased.
      To address the vibrant/gloomy portions. I never call D2 dark and gloomy, (I assume you're referring the King's fall portions mainly) I say it has no focus or color, then Oryx in D2 is incredibly vibrant and colorful, a complete shift with no cohesion between the two (No color or much lighting, just base models, to vibrant and bright).
      Whereas, in D1 the intro has colors yet remains eerie. Then Oryx the big bad (the menacing villain) is dark and gloomy to fit the atmosphere and direction trying to be shown. A change between the two but not a complete shift like d2, and one that makes sense, to fit the ominous evil of the final boss (color & eerie, to darker colors and eerie).
      If D2 left Oryx very dark and colorless like the start of the raid, I'd understand the decision. Conversely, if both the intro and end were bright, I'd at least understand the art direction (though bright for the hive doesn't make much sense). And that's the problem with D2's art; it lacks direction, focus, and consistency.
      Not to mention clear detail removed like the lamp at the top, which has no reason/excuse for removal.
      There are for sure things Destiny 2 does better than Destiny 1, and I mention a fair amount of them. I linger more on art direction (which happens to favor D1) simply because art direction is something that needs to be explained more (since most people haven't taken art or game art classes/courses). This might appear like a narrative is being pushed, but its just the facts of the matter, not something done to undermine everything D2 does.

    I've always been disappointed with how they handled the Cosmodrome in D2, it's like no care was taken with it and Bungie used bland basic textures which were already in the game from the EDZ.
    Like where's the Snow and atmosphere!?!?!? Also puzzled as to why they couldn't make the location a complete loop with that tunnel between forgotten shore and devils lair strike locations
    I agree with you, D1 locations feel better than the D2 copy/pasted counterparts.
    D2 specific locations are mostly good and the same quality as D1 sometimes better in the case of the Dreaming City and Pale Heart.
    Some skyboxes in D2 need improvement to match D1.
    Armour design is miles above in D2, highly disagree with your claim that its universally accepted that D1 had better armour, both games have their fair share of good and bad sets. D2 definitely has more variety and design imo.
    Overall despite the many better things D1 did, D2 is still a better game and clearly had more potential but has been and still is hindered by bad development choices 😢.
