    I'm sorry, but Tavares at 77 million can't be a good signing. It made all those Maple Leafs think they also deserved a ton of money.

      So many other teams like my islanders could’ve locked him up.. still shit. But if the leafs get him and his contract off and have a “solid playoff team” and still don’t get passed the first round sure yes this is the best or one of the best signing from that year but that year had so many other good players signed too so idk def not best nvm but pretty fucking good if he’s the only reason why the leafs actually got passed the first round because imagine him on the islanders in the 2021 season with a slight higher cap they could’ve beat Tampa.

    Capitals fan here. Getting Niskanen was great for us, but people tend to forget he was part of a "packaged deal", cause the Capitals also had to sign Niskanen's good friend Brooks Orpik to secure the former's services. The problem with Orpik was that he was a shutdown defenseman at age 34, and he signed for 5 years, and while Orpik is a leadership type of player, him joining the Capitals came at a time when contending teams were built around youth and speed. So while the Capitals secured Niskanen entering his prime years, I'm honestly surprised Orpik worked out well for us, given his age and playing style. Both Orpik and Niskanen were part of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2018, so I guess I should not complain about the outcome.

    Hawks fan here, love the Mikheyev trade. We needed more middle-6 talent, and even get an upgrade in the bottom-6 (assuming Lafferty signs), all while moving up 2 rounds.
    Especially love it because Mikheyev's contract is off the books at the same time we'll be giving Bedsy and Korchinski new deals.

    I don't like the Tavares take because it's just too much money and too long. He's not a player like Bergeron/Barkov, who plays top level on both ends, or like Mckinnon, McDavid, Kuch,... who are on another level with their offensive production. That would be worth this contract, JT's performance is not worth that much.

  • @matthewhurrell5226
    @matthewhurrell5226 19 дней назад +7

    Zero chance Tavares’ deal was good for the leafs. It enabled off ice issues (loss of team leverage in negotiations) that kept them from adding to the Leafs roster. Why pay a guy a franchise altering deal that’s never played a minute for your team AND isn’t the best player on the team? Doesn’t make sense and creates more issues later on.

    John Tavares contract is cancer to the Leafs. Dude wanted to play for his home team so bad he screwed them over by wanting to be paid too much. If he really wanted to play for them then he should've taken a team friendly contract so they can get other players to be around him. Look at a lot of the teams that have won the cup lately. Lots of players on team friendly contracts.

Wait and see what happens if Marner is traded. Look at Hyman and O'Reilly from this list. They are truly elite , in one way or another.

    At the time Tavares signed with the Leafs, the Leafs were THIRSTY to show the fans that they had the players needed to contend for a Cup. And most of the Leafs fans were ecstatic at the time to see Tavares in their jersey! What management at the time failed to do was sign any of those core players to cap friendly deals. They ignored the salary cap constraints to appease their fanbase. In doing so they temporarily relieved the pressure on themselves to show the illusion of progress. However the team wasn’t really making any true progress. We could use this analogy to help put things into perspective.
    Let’s say I am in the market to buy a new vehicle. In this example I have my eye on a brand new 2024 Toyota Tacoma truck. The dealership has two of the same models to choose from. Literally the only difference between the two models is the price. One of them is $80,000. The other is $580,000. Both built on the same day in the same factory by the same person. Both made to the exact same specifications. Who in the right mind would ever entertain buying the model that is priced $500,000 more expensive for the exact same thing?
    NHL GMs need to sign contracts for their players with similar stats and ceilings to similar AAVs and term deals. Otherwise they’re not working with the same value.

    Tavares signing in Toronto at 7 X $11m was a FANTASTIC thing... for the New York Islanders. The Isles would never have been able to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, TWICE, and remain competitive all these years with that boat anchor tied to their franchise. Islander fans are still chanting, "We don't need you," every time JT shows up on Long Island. So, yes, that was a great contract signing, just not for the team that signed him.

  • @GreenFoo72
    @GreenFoo72 19 дней назад +1

    We could easily argue that the Tavares contract in 2018 is the main reason why the leafs have failed. You already had your top line center in Matthew who needed to be signed with your two young wingers as well and we could argue that giving that money to Tavares instead of a top pair D or a goalie and putting all that money into 4 forwards was meant to failed

    Wild to me that you have Tavares as the best signing for that year, because I not only think it was a terrible signing, but one of the worst signings of all time.
    That team needed so much help with defense, goaltending, and general depth, so allocating 11mil a year to Tavares did nothing for any of those needs. I firmly believe that signing single handedly took them out of their cup window and essentially tossed away some of the best years of Matthews and Marner's careers.
    Tavares has the skill and the strength, but man, does that guy have one of the lowest hockey IQs I have ever seen. He doesn't make the best play, he doesn't make the creative play, he doesn't make the easy play; he makes the first play. Easily some of the most predictable plays I have ever seen every time he touches the puck.
    And naming him captain before he even plays a game for the club? How do you expect to win anything when you're being lead by a guy with no vision? Insanity.

    Panarin is a regular season merchant and completely disappears when it counts. Almost 12 mil to a non-factor in the postseason is terrible. Even if the rangers barely squeaked into the playoffs, that would be fine without Panarin and they could spend that money on two or three impactful players.
