As a fellow Wings fan, I was shocked at this move. I thought Walman was a great player for us on the defensive side. It sucks that they let him go, but I can see the reason. Yzerman wants to clear some cap space to lock Raymond and Seider. Those 2 are our franchise players, and we need them going forward. With the Jake Walman trade, it save us over 6 million in cap. And I think Edvinsson will be in the majors this year. So now the question is, who do we sign after we lock Lucas and Moritz?
As a Blues fan who was livid when they traded Walman, Detroit, i feel your pain. I havent seen anything about his interactions in the locker room but something doesnt make sense here.
OhNyquist video drops: oh, cool, dude is pretty level headed and analytical, this will be a good video. OhNyquist is somewhat alienated: 😮 ooooooooohhhhh boy here we go
Isn’t a premium skating, puck moving, 2 way, first pairing defenseman with a cannon for a shot, why you draft defensemen in the first place? 3.4 million seems to be “on the cheap”, as well. WTaF?
There are concerns moving him. He didn't play much at all over the last weeks of the year. Something had to have happened. But! Walman was electric. Minimum for locker room presence you keep him around. Was he out top D? Technically. On any other roster he's bottom pairing. But Future considerations????
Yeah it's weird, I don't know what else to say about it other than obviously we are missing a piece of this puzzle. Not a single team wanted Walman for just "future considerations"? Yzerman had to throw in a high second just to get rid of him? Holl would be the more obvious guy to get rid of in a pure cap dump.
If you get a 3rd or even late 2nd for Walman. That’s fine! But this is insane! A team like Devils could have picked up Walman no? Or a team like Flames etc. Great deal for Sharks at least!
@@juliovillalobos2559 I can guarantee that won't happen. The asking price on Ferraro is a first and a good prospect, they're not going to throw in two seconds and skip the prospect just to get a late first. He might not quite get what he's looking for, but even if you assume the two seconds are the later two (42 and 53), those are worth a late first on their own (right around pick 30). If you go with 33 and 42 it'd be about pick 22 or 23. If you do 33 and 53 it's about pick 25.
There is just the slightest chance that Yzerman knows more about hockey and the Red Wings in particular than any of us. Don’t forget that Yzerman is the architect of what became a two time championship team in Tampa.
That’s cool, he still has yet to make the playoffs with this wings team. Also signed some terrible contracts and just gave away a second and walman to make cap space.. that he doesn’t have cause he signed Justin holl and Ben chiarot LOL Yzerman is overrated and the wings are just going backwards
Yeah and he's also the guy that signed Chiarot, Copp, Holl and traded for Petry. Personally i wanted none of those players let alone overpay them. I wanted Zadorov but he signed Chiarot to an overpay. I wanted Trocheck but he overpaid a 3rd line center in Copp. I wanted Gudas or Schenn but he overpaid Holl. I didn't want Petry at all even at what the Wings are paying him. He better have a lot planned to get rid of Holl and Petry and bring in some real defensemen that can actually help the team not sink it and waste cap space. Yzerman has made some good moves but he's also made some very bad ones too.
This trade makes zero sense. Either a big trade is coming or Walman needs surgery. I bet half the teams would take Walman by himself and his contract for future considerations. The fact they needed to add a pick is what really confuses me.
Guys relax, we have edvinsson and Johansson coming up. Our left side will be chariot, edvinsson, and Johansson. Chariot was much better this year than his first year. Matta might be shipped too or might be a 7th defence man. Or we might gain a new player. It’s too early to panic.
Moritz Seider has been great in the beginning but where did he go? His game defensively has went out the window along with the rest of the teams defensive play ?
I hate this trade, I loved walman he brought such a good energy to the locker room, I'm wondering if the injury at the end of the season was worse than we thought
As a wings fan, im more confused than anything else. Im guessing its the only contract Yzerman could move out of the ones you mentioned. Probably need to give up a 1st for the others. It Edvinsson can take a step his ceiling is higher. But I'm going to give Yzerman the benefit of the doubt until after free agency.
@@OhNyquist No problem. As for this trade, I totally agree with you. Outside Seider, Walman was the last person I expected to be dealt. I would have included one of the other names you mentioned in the video, but maybe this is Yzerman planning a blockbuster or something...
So it`s a month after this, free agency is done and i have still no idea what that move was. I could see a cap dump in Copp, who at 5,625m is a cap grave for 3 more seasons. I could see Holl, Chiarot or Maatta moved. I even could see Husso traded, as his 4,75m cap is kind of an overkill with Talbot, Lyon and Campbell in the mix. Walman at 3,4m for 2 seasons for sure isn`t a bad deal if you look at the contracts guys like Dumba, Lyubushkin or Skjei signed. Even if he turns out to be your 4th or 5th D for the 2 years, it`s a good deal for SJS. DET had nothing coming, so what was that move for?
He didn’t play near seasons end. He’s a 6th dman at best. They’re expecting Simon and perhaps even Albert to play full time in Detroit. It’s not that surprising. Price paid was for sure though.
Buying his way out of off-season blunders. Hopefully Justin Holl is next. Not the Stevie Y with a Lightning roster in front of him to boost with minimal additions. That Gibson deal was horrendous... he'll be better than whatever they get with the 2nd. Other guys looks like a struggle in his Jr. League.
Mind blowing. Walman was a healthy scratch at the end of last season, but that was only because Fenster wanted to put Jeff Petry's corpse out on the ice AND give Simon Edvinsson a much needed look. Hopefully the two ex-Griffin defenders step up this year, because objectively, Walman was our 2nd best defenseman for the last two seasons.
As a Ranger fan, people forget Goodrow had a No Movement Clause also in his deal and had the Sharks on his no trade list, which is why Drury had to waive him and let the Sharks claim him for free. Walman definitely isn’t worth more
I wonder if the 2nd really is for considerations like "don't flip Wahlman to Toronto or Montreal." I remember a few years ago that the Pens would work hard to trade guys out of division or conference, and then they'd immediately be flipped to the Capitals, Canes, Blue Jackets, etc. Or when the Sens traded Hoffman to the Sharks and they immediately flipped him to the Panthers.
This all but confirms that the left side is going to be Edvinsson, Chiarot, and AlJo. I'm still scratching my head and yes, this one kind of stings, but I'm willing to let it marinate. There has to be something coming, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a big splash very soon here
Sharks fan here, we'll take care of Walman for you guys. I hope Yzerman is cooking - the SJ-DET rivalry is something I haven't had enough of for a while now.
@@callenga Yeah, they had a pretty good rivalry for awhile back when they were in the Western Conference. I didn't get really into hockey until around 2009, but they had back-to-back second round playoff series against each other and pretty much every game between the two teams was a one-goal game (give or take an empty net goal).
I checked cap friendly and we are almost 10mil out from the cap floor and are about 32 mil from the cap hit. Yeah we still gotta sign Seider and Ratmond but this pushes us even further money wise
Theory - what if Detroit will have the options to swap their #15 pick with the SJ #14 pick if Detroit has a prospect they really like fall to 14. If not, the picks stay with their respective teams, and San Jose accepts a cap dump from Detroit (Holl/Petry)
I could see a scenario where "if X player (MBN, maybe Eiserman) is there at 14, don't pick him." As for Holl/Petry, I think both of them say no to the trade. Petry especially already nixed a trade to San Jose just last year.
He’s try to either clear cap space for our free agents including Raymond and seider and make room for edvidsson and Johansson,or big purchases or a big trade is coming that we don’t know of yet is coming.quit freaking out everyone and wake up you should know everything a GM does is for a reason if their was no reason then he wouldn’t of traded walman so he’s obviously not stupid like a lot of redwings fans think he is
He only has to do this because his FA acquisitions have been so garbage. 3.4 mill for 3 years to Holl who only plays 11 games and we have to give up a young solid D man that actually plays in games. So thrilled to have Holl on the team instead of Walman AND A SECOND ROUND DRAFT PICK.
Detroit actually had a pretty good record in the 19 games Walman missed. Maybe they want to use the same Top 6 they used down the stretch with maybe Skjei or one of the youngsters replacing Ghost.
I'm baffled. Like, how did Yzerman have to give up a 2nd to move a player we should have been able to get assets for? Plus, Gibson just had a breakout season in the OHL. He's a right handed dman too. That's the one depth position we don't want to lose players from. Ugh. WTF?? Like, we still have Holl, Petry, and Chiarot. None of the problems are solved.
@@Colton-cp6vz They already had money to do that, even after the Mo and Raymond extensions. Plus, they need to buy-out Holl, which will be even more money. I hope it means they're going big, but we'll see.

Well... Yzerman didn't put Walman on waivers first, so we'll never know if he's valued more than Goodrow, who was put on waivers because he wouldn't waive his no move. I also think the negotiations started with the likes of Holl or Chiarot, but the compensation that SJ was looking for was too high. Instead of looking for another partner, Yzerman settled on moving Walman instead. What's more shocking, the Shark's weren't on Walman's no trade list.
Sad to see Wally go. But, we need more shutdown Dmen. We definitely need some more muscle and if we have to sacrifice some goals, that’s fine. As we’ve seen during the finals-offense doesn’t win series, D definitely does. Let’s see what Yzerman does with this. I have a good feeling that our GAA will be better off for it.
So Walman is about to gritty on Detroit…ouch that has to hurt, but idk this trade is confusing but Stevie Y could be cooking up something big there are a lot of good-great players on the trade block and in free agency
I don't think this is actually what's happening, but wouldn't it be interesting if this was how the Rangers were compensating the Sharks for taking Barclay Goodrow off their hands? The Sharks get a lopsided trade with the Red Wings, and then the Rangers pay the Red Wings back somehow in a second trade.
Given Yzerman's body of work on the ice, and off the ice, I don't think anyone should be question his decisions. This guy isn't some one-hit-wonder, who got lucky building a team. He knows what he's doing. Relax.
Goodrow has mntc. Sharks were on it. He didn't want to waive. Rangers needed to get him off the books, waive him. If someone takes him good. If not buyout. Goodrow had all the leverage. Walman has value, so it only cost a 2nd to move 3.4m cap off the books. Would you happier if it the wings had to pay their first to move Chariot?
I see a lot of upset Wings fans in the comment section, so I thought I'd give my neutral opinion on these trades. 1) The Wings are essentially trading away Walman and Gibson for Kiiskinen for what is obviously a cap dump. Whether this is a good move or not will depend on what trades/signings that are coming next. 2) A lot of Wings fans seems upset that Walman is the casualty while Chiarot, Holl, Määttä and Petry are still on the roster. And while it's fair to think that one of those guys should have been dumped, please take a minute to think about what assets you would have to attach in that trade. In my opinion, you would have to give up, at the VERY least, a first round pick or the equivalent. In case of trying to move Chiarot or Holl, who both have two years remaining on their contracts, you are probably looking at a 1st and a 3rd or the equivalent. 3) To those who complain about having to attach assets to dump Walman while the New York Rangers got rid of Barclay Goodrow through waivers. Keep in mind that Goodrow allegedly had the San Jose Sharks on his M-NTC trade list. Putting him on waivers was just a way to circumvent his M-NTC.
Walman was injured for the last 15+ games of the season. Simon E and maybe another defensive prospect may be expected to make the team out of camp. Yzerman’s free agent defensemen pickups have been pretty bad. His defensemen drafts have been well regarded. But yeah… this is a head scratcher for sure, until we have more details.

Dayuuum san jose are making good looking move right now coming off that disastrous year might become a sharks supporter lol
Dont get rid of your 5,6, or 7th best defenseman. Get rid if your 3rd best
Why in the blazes would you trade walman
As a fellow Wings fan, I was shocked at this move. I thought Walman was a great player for us on the defensive side. It sucks that they let him go, but I can see the reason. Yzerman wants to clear some cap space to lock Raymond and Seider. Those 2 are our franchise players, and we need them going forward. With the Jake Walman trade, it save us over 6 million in cap. And I think Edvinsson will be in the majors this year. So now the question is, who do we sign after we lock Lucas and Moritz?
Marty Necas, and Saros
I trust Yzerman, I hope he has something planned because I liked Walman

i dont trust yzerman overrated GM
@@justinalley3399 I mean, he essentially created a dynasty in Tampa Bay, what’s not to trust.
As a Blues fan who was livid when they traded Walman, Detroit, i feel your pain. I havent seen anything about his interactions in the locker room but something doesnt make sense here.
OhNyquist video drops: oh, cool, dude is pretty level headed and analytical, this will be a good video.
OhNyquist is somewhat alienated: 😮 ooooooooohhhhh boy here we go
Is there huge LD in the market?
Justin hall he meant?
Isn’t a premium skating, puck moving, 2 way, first pairing defenseman with a cannon for a shot, why you draft defensemen in the first place? 3.4 million seems to be “on the cheap”, as well. WTaF?
Thank you for the trade and hopefully we do give you guys something back that you guys need when the time is right👍
There are concerns moving him. He didn't play much at all over the last weeks of the year. Something had to have happened.
But!
Walman was electric. Minimum for locker room presence you keep him around. Was he out top D? Technically. On any other roster he's bottom pairing. But Future considerations????
Don't see how anyone justifies this trade, no way they needed to do that, that cap hit was way too short and too low to force a 2nd for the trade
Cap dump trust yzerman plan, we need holl out though
Yzerman is cooking right now
Making cap room for Raymond and seider and to add better players! Remember he helped construct the three stanley cup championships for Tampa.
As a Sharks fan, idk why Stevie made this trade, dude has to be cooking something up.
I can Guerentee you we move Ferraro and 2 of the second picks for a late round 1st pick
Also signed some terrible contracts and just gave away a second and walman to make cap space.. that he doesn’t have cause he signed Justin holl and Ben chiarot LOL
Yzerman is overrated and the wings are just going backwards
@@Cup_in_6we’re going make the playoffs trust the yzerman plan
What he did in Tampa, a one time success, means nothing to his performance as a Wings GM.
@@Cup_in_6 Someone had to say it. Yzerman walks on water in Detroit, according to Wings fans and media. To question him is blasphemous.
What exactly is the Yzerplan? 🤔
This trade makes zero sense. Either a big trade is coming or Walman needs surgery. I bet half the teams would take Walman by himself and his contract for future considerations. The fact they needed to add a pick is what really confuses me.
Cap dump to resign are players like mi and Shayne
Guys relax, we have edvinsson and Johansson coming up. Our left side will be chariot, edvinsson, and Johansson. Chariot was much better this year than his first year. Matta might be shipped too or might be a 7th defence man. Or we might gain a new player. It’s too early to panic.
Trust the yzerman plan we will make the playoffs
I have no idea what Steve Yzerman is planning here but he's definitely cooking up something bigger this summer
Moritz Seider has been great in the beginning but where did he go? His game defensively has went out the window along with the rest of the teams defensive play ?
is walman still injured?

I hate this trade, I loved walman he brought such a good energy to the locker room, I'm wondering if the injury at the end of the season was worse than we thought
As a wings fan, im more confused than anything else. Im guessing its the only contract Yzerman could move out of the ones you mentioned. Probably need to give up a 1st for the others. It Edvinsson can take a step his ceiling is higher. But I'm going to give Yzerman the benefit of the doubt until after free agency.
Is he clearing room for guentzel or Necas?
I like Marty
I'm wondering if Walman's injury at the end of the year played a part in this trade, it might help explain the draft pick being thrown in.
what are your thoughts on the linus ullmark trade?
Had a video planned today and gave my thoughts on that trade at the end of it, but with this Red Wings news I moved that video to tomorrow!
@@OhNyquist No problem. As for this trade, I totally agree with you. Outside Seider, Walman was the last person I expected to be dealt. I would have included one of the other names you mentioned in the video, but maybe this is Yzerman planning a blockbuster or something...
@@OhNyquist A day later, it looks like this could be a cap dump to trade for John Gibson. If this is how it goes, I still don't like the Walman trade.
Yzerman was not down with the gritty 🤣🤣🤣
I like Walman, sad to see him go like this.
Thoughts on the linus ullmark trade?
Bad for Boston but good for Ottawa as a wings fan we need a goalie
As a Ranger fan, people forget Goodrow had a No Movement Clause also in his deal and had the Sharks on his no trade list, which is why Drury had to waive him and let the Sharks claim him for free. Walman definitely isn’t worth more
Who's Jessi Kiskinen?
I wonder if the 2nd really is for considerations like "don't flip Wahlman to Toronto or Montreal."
I remember a few years ago that the Pens would work hard to trade guys out of division or conference, and then they'd immediately be flipped to the Capitals, Canes, Blue Jackets, etc.
There has to be something coming, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a big splash very soon here
how do you determine a players value?
Look around the league at other deals for comparable players.
Sharks fan here, we'll take care of Walman for you guys. I hope Yzerman is cooking - the SJ-DET rivalry is something I haven't had enough of for a while now.
Det SJ rivalry?
@@callenga Yeah, they had a pretty good rivalry for awhile back when they were in the Western Conference. I didn't get really into hockey until around 2009, but they had back-to-back second round playoff series against each other and pretty much every game between the two teams was a one-goal game (give or take an empty net goal).
@@jonmendelson1104 Yes I recall vividly. I would not call that a rivalry
This one hurts. Griddy was cringy but I still loved Wally.
I checked cap friendly and we are almost 10mil out from the cap floor and are about 32 mil from the cap hit. Yeah we still gotta sign Seider and Ratmond but this pushes us even further money wise
Zadorov?
Theory - what if Detroit will have the options to swap their #15 pick with the SJ #14 pick if Detroit has a prospect they really like fall to 14. If not, the picks stay with their respective teams, and San Jose accepts a cap dump from Detroit (Holl/Petry)
I could see a scenario where "if X player (MBN, maybe Eiserman) is there at 14, don't pick him." As for Holl/Petry, I think both of them say no to the trade. Petry especially already nixed a trade to San Jose just last year.
@jonmendelson1104 yeah I'd like the case to be Eiserman. Still not worth a 2nd and walman tho :/
what the heck is future considerations? Could it be something big?
A bag of pucks, a ticket to a Taylor Swift concert, validate your parking ticket... In other words, nothing.
well have to wait, Its been everything from a steak dinner to a #1 centerman
He’s try to either clear cap space for our free agents including Raymond and seider and make room for edvidsson and Johansson,or big purchases or a big trade is coming that we don’t know of yet is coming.quit freaking out everyone and wake up you should know everything a GM does is for a reason if their was no reason then he wouldn’t of traded walman so he’s obviously not stupid like a lot of redwings fans think he is
Trust the yzerman plan
He only has to do this because his FA acquisitions have been so garbage. 3.4 mill for 3 years to Holl who only plays 11 games and we have to give up a young solid D man that actually plays in games. So thrilled to have Holl on the team instead of Walman AND A SECOND ROUND DRAFT PICK.
Blues moved on from Walkman too. Curious.
I could not believe this when I heard it. I hoped you would break it down and tell me what I'm missing, but....

As a Sharks fan, make sure to take care of Future Considerations.
This BETTER be a complete overhaul
To be fair to Maata, he's played well in Detroit. He's played more than is sustainable, but he's been good.
I'm thinking that Yzerman is clearing cap space to address the goaltending situation with a significant upgrade.
Add the Hronek deal from last year. There must be some very specific reasons. I'm not seeing it.
The Hronek deal was good
Yzerman reeeaaaallly hates the griddy
I don't think this is actually what's happening, but wouldn't it be interesting if this was how the Rangers were compensating the Sharks for taking Barclay Goodrow off their hands? The Sharks get a lopsided trade with the Red Wings, and then the Rangers pay the Red Wings back somehow in a second trade.
Given Yzerman's body of work on the ice, and off the ice, I don't think anyone should be question his decisions.
This guy isn't some one-hit-wonder, who got lucky building a team. He knows what he's doing. Relax.

Goodrow had all the leverage.
Walman has value, so it only cost a 2nd to move 3.4m cap off the books. Would you happier if it the wings had to pay their first to move Chariot?
They traded Mr.Griddy himself 😢
Crazy, but Yzerman best be cooking
They didn't have to add a second round pick, they are getting something for it on Friday at the draft. Just my opinion.
