- Star Wars Battlefront II is a modern day videogames tragedy. I can only imagine how disappointed the people of DICE, Criterion and Motive must feel to have produced a game so strong, and so faithful to the source material, only to have it received in this way because of EA's targeting interventions.
This review is for the developers more than anything else. I wanted to pay tribute to the fine work they've done, while cautioning against the potential impact that a game like this would have on the future were it allowed to succeed.

Yup, the campaign storyline was a really stupid story especially after reading the book, Inferno Squad. Iden would never switch sides that quickly. And in seconds after the Death Star explodes, Iden is over it with “We can deal with this later.” Yeah, right.
I wonder how many people didn't buy this game specifically because of the terrible progression system and tied-in PTW loot crates. Is the money they make from exploitation more than the money they lose from potential buyers that got disgusted? Sadly... yeah, I think it probably is.

Years down the road, when you do decide to share a Star Wars game with your child there could be modded servers running some crazy mod called *The True Release* or something with an actual progression system or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It could happen.....
I still remember when I first heard of Battlefront being remade and being so excited. I was thinking they were going to recreate the original Battlefront games with HD graphics, more worlds, new weapons, and a good progression system. But instead we got two games each of which are an insult to two of my favorite Star Wars games of all time. They had all the pieces, everything they needed was in those early games, but instead they completely ignored them choosing to listen to their greed more than the fanbase that was already there. I had always dreamed of a true successor to the original Star Wars Battlefront games. I guess I’m going to have to keep on dreaming.
My exact feeling
I feel the same way. I was so excited when they announced that DICE was making Star Wars Battlefront. However, when I played the beta, it became apparent that so much of what made the original's great just wasn't there.
I don’t get how they screwed it up so hard. Literally all EA had to do was remake the original battlefront 2 with all of the original content but with new graphics.... and they screwed it up. It was literally the easiest decision in the world and they would have made millions, maybe even billions off of it and would have been heralded as the good guys of gaming (for a short while at least), but they got greedy and completely gutted the game to fit their monetization needs. I played the game for about 10 hours and am completely bored of it because of how big of a unfun grind it is to get everything. EA deserves all of this backlash and I really hope that they lose their rights to Star Wars for fucking up Star Wars 3 times now.
Get a PC. Download the og bf2. The servers are back up. It's what I'm going to do.
Same here, I loved BF on the older consoles and was looking forward to getting the new ones..and I'm still waiting. I Haven't bought any of this shit that's being produced now.

I did the same thing in the Vardos Mission, I thought that this game was just messing with me, and then I kept on getting shot at stormtroopers, then I thought “EA WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY”

I'm genuinely horrified of how other game publishers will react if this game is even remotely successful... nothing short of a complete failure will deter the others from implementing such methods in their games. It's understandable in a f2p game, but in an age where f2p games like warframe, path of exile, fortnite and even paladins are offering great experiences without expecting players to constantly pay for things along the way, the balls of the execs at EA, who decided this was a good idea for a full price AAA title, is admirable.
Greed is the cardinal sin for a game developer, the sooner these guys realize that, the faster we get good quality AAA games.
Super interesting to watch this after seeing everything that happened to this game. They almost turned it all around, only to get kicked in the mouth by EA again and shut down development to work on BF 2042.

When skill up reviews somwthing, he isn't going to give you a weak one. He'll deliver a full blown story premise, plot, and conclusion jesus I love it.
The story is pretty much expected. The campaign is just fan service and training for the multiplayer. I still remember spending so much time with my dad and brother playing the first star wars battlefront 2. That game was amazing. And it's sad that this game is kinda ruined by loot boxes.

I don't get how people are loving the way the ships control in this game. I can't STAND how they fly. Maybe if I never touched another flight game then I'd like it, but I just can't seem to find a way to fly them that I like.

I have always liked your willingness to look beyond the surface of a story or a review. I really appreciate you calling out the ACTUAL makers of the game for some well deserved props. It's much like Video cards these days. The MFG's have made amazing strides in the last few years both Team Red and Team Green. It is not their fault cyrpto currencies make getting a high end card either impossible or VERY expensive.When the cost of cards (per processing power) has come down dramatically.

Thank you for voicing this. Your review should be the one watched by anyone thinking of buying into this nightmare. I've written off alot of AAA companies because of these practices, and until we make them accountable for their actions, it will continue and grow worse over time. I don’t understand why I’m just now coming across your content. You have an AMAZING method for making videos. As a 39 year old I almost cried during your intro as it was also my story, among man many others. That was the beauty of Star Wars, we were all apart of it somehow.

Wow! A surgical and elegant dissection of a complicated and emotionally-charged issue. I couldn’t find a word to disagree with - from the natural anger induced by greed-raping our childhood stories to the well-worded final note to the studios recognizing the daunting amount of effort they have put into making the game world. Just perfect - thank you! I only wish that someone with the power to affect the future of SW gaming hears this, understands it and takes it to heart.
Never forget, ever. Next time you’re playing Dead Space remake and Fallen Order and think “huh, EA’s not that bad” just REMEMBER what they tried to do here, and don’t ever fool yourself into thinking they won’t try it again one day.

Rogue Squadron was not a console exclusive ... I've beat it (and improved to at least silver level on nearly every mission) on my old Windows XP PC.
A fun time - but the best ever flight simulator for Star Wars was easily X-Wing and Tie-Fighter ... terrific battles in 1st person, in which you were free to do anything, order your wingmen, control the energy in your ship to either recharge the weapons or shields, or boost engines.
You could even fly away from the combat zone altogether (if an enemy wasn't chasing you), just to replenish your shields and weapons ... but that would leave your friends battling the enemy and most likely losing. There was always the pressure to get back in there
If you chose to accelerate shield replenishment, your laser weapons would gradually lose shots .. it was a complicated balancing act. It really was like flying in the Star Wars universe for real - making decisions about how you could survive (and if your ship was destroyed, your military career had a 50% chance of ending in a KIA ... you were honoured as a hero. But you had to start again from scratch ...or you were picked up by the medical vessel and lived to fight another day.)
Tie Fighter was the first mention of the First Order too ... if you completed a hidden side-mission while achieving the primary objective, you could rise up the ranks of the First Order.
You could click on your sleeve, to reveal a First Order tatoo.
You'll need an emulator to play either - but they hold up today more than ever before; maybe not graphically (640x480), but it's smooth and it's got John Williams best ever music mashup. The imagination doesn't have to do that much, especially when you're in the thick of the action.
It is the purest Star Wars game I know - no microtransactions or bullshit like that. Just the ultimate Star Wars flight simulator - WAY better than Rogue Squadron.
This Battlefront II game? Deary me - they've done their best to ruin the visuals with icons everywhere. That's NOT immersion - I don't care what you say.
In X-Wing or Tie-Fighter - you got to choose your target, there would be a single bracket on the HUD showing who to chase/inspect/disable ... everything else was just dots on the radar (helpfully - the red dots were imperial, the green were rebels and blue was neutral).
So you were flying towards one carefully targeted bracket, there was no other clutter on the screen above the main console with the radar on it (very old-school Elite ... where this concept came about).
Honestly my friend - you need to play a PROPER Star Wars game like X-wing or Tie-Fighter ... then you will see how it's done.
I've cut a long story short here [hehe] - X-wing and Tie-Fighter are masterpieces.
[They never crashed either].
I could go on about how the main menu is basically a space station - and you click on the "simulation room" door to practice your skills, or another door to view your medals, or another door to enter the current mission and a ton of other stuff ...
My lord. Seriously, the first three minutes made me almost shed a tear. I was so excited to indoctrinate my children into my world of star wars finaticism, but no... I will never support pay to win, microcasinos, or any of this Ea corporate lunacy. Awesome review.

I just recently sat down with my 5 year old son to watch StarWars. He was introduced to starwars through the lego games on his iPad. He ran off after the movie finished to begin his own imaginary game of starwars with his toys. #prouddad
