  • Welcome to a new series where I take a retrospective look at some of my favourite video games from my childhood. To start, I'm checking out the original Star Wars Battlefront games developed by Pandemic Studios for the PS2, Xbox and PC.
    This is my first time making a video this long (I've never even made one over 10 minutes) so I apologize for any errors or inconsistencies in the voice over. After countless rewrites to the script, I eventually had to stop myself and stick with what I had. Otherwise, you’d never see this video.
    Feel free to share your thoughts on either of these games, or even the canceled BF3.
    Additional videos featured in this video can be viewed from the following RUclips channels:

      Same, I had an EGM magazine too that talked about it and showed pics of what the characters looked like and some maps. But yeah, then it was canceled. In a later magazine they said the BF3 graphics we're too good. That they couldn't wait for PC/Console market to catch up. And they wouldn't make enough sales on the people that could run it on their PC.

      Ah man, I can't even describe the level of joy BF2 brought me as a child. Playing split screen with my brother or friends was the best. I still have the game for my PS2, but original Xbox owners have the advantage because they could do 4 player split screen, but even with the multi-tap PS2 won't allow it. Galactic Conquest is by far my favorite game mode, and I think it's a shame that no modern shooter has come close to replicating it. Games today are repetitive, expensive, and get boring fast... Enemy Territoy by Wolfenstein was another excellent shooter back in those days

The first Battlefront is was originally got me into gaming as some of the earliest memories I had as a kid was sitting with my dad watching him play. One night he had to work late and I called him saying to come home because I wanted to watch him play, he told me I could just play myself and that blew my mind and started my on my journey into video games. This video brought back some really good memories as I haven't managed to replay BF1 yet but the editing and commentary (especially the end montage) were fantastic.

      That's so cool. Reminds me of when I was little, I wanted to play Super Mario 64 but was too scared to leave the starting area of Bob-omb Battlefield because of the Goombas surrounding the platform where you spawn, so I would get my dad to play and watch him. One day I worked up enough courage to venture out and realized for the first time how easy it was to jump on the Goombas and kill them, and I was never afraid of the game from then on. 🙂 (except for the creepy piano monster lol)
      BF1 was such a fun game. I would queue up instant action matches as a sort of little "story", try to survive as long as possible as one soldier, have last stands against hundreds of bots, all kinds of stuff. I miss that true "sandbox shooter" era of gaming, before things like monetization, cosmetics, live service, hero shooters, etc...

    My favorite part of the original Battlefront 1 (and to a lesser extend the sequel) was the 3rd faction. Sometimes allied to one of the main factions (like the ewoks and wookies), sometimes allied to everyone (the jawas), and my personal favorite, hostile to everyone (the tusken raiders and the gamorreans). I loved Dune Sea for the chaos the tuskens added, and it's still my favorite map of any of the Battlefront games (modern and original). I wish more shooters would include 3rd factions like that.

    A small thing that went uncovered, I missed how Squad Commands were dumbed down in the second game. You could tell AI in the first game to follow you, advance, hold position, and spread out. In the second game, it's just follow or spread out, and the AI will very rigidly fall into a formation that copies your movement inputs, making friendly fire easy if it's on (your rank also determined how many you could command, up to 4). It could be useful to make AI follow you to capture objectives so you had a little backup. First person in BF1 was also way more polished

    Great video man! I think something a lot of people look over in the retrospectives on these games is the difference in AI between 2004 and 2005. 2004’s AI wasn’t perfect, but IMO a VAST improvement compared to 2005. For me nowadays, that really sways my choice in 2004’s favor when I revisit these games because l have to use my brain instead of just going on a mindless killing spree

    • @breadballer
      @breadballer  Год назад +7

      That’s true, I probably should’ve talked about that. On normal there isn’t much difference but I do find BF1’s “hard” AI are tougher than BF2’s “elite”. With the heroes on, some maps in Bf1 are legitimately hard to win.

    • @Protoking
      @Protoking Год назад +6

      @@breadballer I am glad to find the only other person besides me to prefer BF1. I had both games but put alot more time into BF1. I would generally describe it as having more character and vastly superior maps while the second game was fully and unapologetically ROTS for better or worse. That said I find the CIS to be overpowered to the point of being broken as my ai teammates throw their shiny meatbag bodies into the wood chipper known as the Destroyer Droids

      True. I never really got into BF2005 because of how boring the battles could be with the bots just... standing there and occasionally shooting... stuff. Meanwhile, you could even get obliterated by some bloodthirsty Y-Wing at any second in BF2004, the battles actually felt alive in that game

    The original Battlefront had the best maps, hands down. Compare the BF1 Geonosis, Kamino or Kashyyyk to the BF2 version, there's no contest. And BF1 had the likes of Tatooine Dune Sea, Rhen Var Harbor, and (best of all) Bespin Platforms. Not to mention BF1 somehow had better AI pathfinding, better squad commands, and more viable vehicles. The only thing BF1 lacks compared to BF2 are the gimmicks like heroes and space battles, in terms of raw gameplay and map design BF1 is the superior game

    what bothered me about battlefront 2005 is how rushed and unfinished it felt (because it kinda was). it had much much more potential and with more time could have been made into a similarly immersive star wars frontline action game. good thing there are mods, though!
