Who was the genius that piped in that system with the pipes blocking the access to the fan motor?? Awesome engineering that makes you rethink your profession
Forgot step 1, either run or get out shop vac and clean up work area before starting. Doesn’t pay to work in filth. Charge extra for cleanup. Just imagine what that A coil looks like!
You never repair or clean without getting paid or authorized. Doesn't pay to do favors for free either, you can just charge someone extra on the back end, it's actually illegal.
You would think someone could break out a vacuum cleaner, good grief. Yep that was a rough one, but you got it done. I felt like I needed to shower after just watching. I can only imagine what you felt. Good job
Drain was already loose I would’ve cut it out and bent copper to get it out the way. Save myself time fighting with the blower also damn that shit was nasty like do those people clean at all. Good job Curtis as always 🎉
OMG!!!!! I was an automotive tech for 30 years only seen 1 vehicle inside as nasty . Refused to even get in the vehicle told the customer to have it detailed and then I would work on it. You are one brave man to work on something that filthy .
I don't see how that fan could have possibly gone bad? Considering it was pulling a VACUUM everytime it was on because of all the nasty. That was disgusting!
Lubricate the blowing fan housing tracks/rails with a spray lubricant like WD-40 to make it easier to slide into & out of the air-handler. A scrub brush to agitate that dirt makes cleaning the blower wheel easier.
I would have cleaned the whole area with a shop-vac before touching anything. Otherwise tuff area to work in as it was so close, you did a great overall job
It's shameful what conditions people live in, I have seen so many videos on youtube, with bad conditions, i just don't know whats going through their heads.
Curtis, I agree with having a small shop vac with you at all times. You get mostly nasty units in those places you go. A cleaning charge is fair too. I would need an N95 mask too!
Had one like that yesterday in a mobile home hadn’t been touched in 25 years and it showed. Had to use my puller to get it off. Wheel and housing cleaned up good though.
Or you just expire from some rarely seen mystery illness from that bunny ick. Might be worth reaching in with a camera or old phone to get a couple pics to see if anything "alive" is growing on the A coil.
No wonder the blower didn’t want to fire up! They need to ask Santa for a shop vac for Christmas 😅. Gotta make time to service my own system. Cold weather came too quick and I had to miss last seasons job.
"Lovely" I remember my dad saying this when he took me on service calls (he had an appliance repair business) and the basement we walked into was in rough shape. Thanks for the flashback, Curtis!
My last service call was a three year old refrigerator that quit, cockroaches had built a nest underneath it and shorted out the compressor. They were trying to hide
The Worst i have ever seen.. not sure how you handle situations like this, all i can say is you are one over the top service tech.. I couldn't imagine not saying something. God bless you.
People live in some disgusting conditions......I had some long time tenants in my 2 family home. When they were gone I couldn't believe the filth they lived in. Took me a while to clean the place.....
It looks like they tried to save on heating costs by running the dryer exhaust into the air intake. I would like to know how much crap was on the coil and filter.
No need to pump down Curtis that would cause unnecessary cost and work the homeowner and or landlord shouldn’t have to pay please think next time Curtis we would appreciate it
@HVACGUY thought maybe if you had to, worse case, get out the lineset bender. That was a rough one, man. Guy needs to clean the area out for you to work that was pretty gnarly.
@@HVACGUY I understand the capital incentive. I think you need to add a "disposable PPE/supplies" charge to those bills for KN95 masks, full eye protection, and perhaps nitrile gloves. You've got video of the conditions and that might make it possible to bill for a "service cleaning" to make it safer for the technician. I'm sure there is a point at which they'll balk, but you've got the vids/pics of the unit condition, and I think you may have a wee bit of leverage as they call you to fix stuff other techs or companies can't or won't. And use that PPE!
Oh boy!!! When are people going to learn about filters? And what the heck are doing the socks/rags in there? With this amount of filth in the blower, people are wondering how they could have respiratory diseases?
I see one at least that dirty or worse just about every year. I’ve even had one that had 1/4-1/2” of slime on the evaporator just filthy environment, others with maggots all in the floor next to the unit. Lots of fun when you walk into a call like that.
45 years in the trade and retired now. Believe it or not, I have seen much worse and made a similar repair. Almost impossible conditions but a determined work ethic and PATIENCE gets the job done. Awesome work and attitude Curtis.
I would have cleaned it out inside their hallway! It appears that they wouldn’t care or notice anyway! This is why investing in home rental properties makes you think twice about investing!
Dude, you are a beast! Thanks , I learn so much from you, may just have to go back into the trade that I miss and love sooo much. Thanks for that alone.
I had one like that, and it helped me to snip off the left rear part that slides in the groove at a 45 degree angle. It still went into the slot and held fine!
Wow that was natty for sure. Got to give you lots of credit for taking on something like that. Looked like it had ran all its life without a filter. What a nest to have to deal with. My hats off to you sir! Hopefully you charged them well for working in that hazard environment!
He bought a new blower wheel in case the old one couldn't be saved. Probably trying to help the customer with their budget. Lots of customer discussions aren't shown on videos for obvious privacy reasons but they often involve what the customer would like ( and can afford ). It's not always a straight-up technical decision.
I think I would have given a quote to replace this one. It has been abused. Now that the cap and blower motor are replaced and running at the correct demand, let's see how long it takes for the call back because something else has quit working. I know you like to repair the old units Curtis, but this one had soo much wrongvits not worth the call back. Thanks for making the video, I really like watching them. Give Reily a treat for me.
That was a nasty unit. The fan blades were totally full. But no reason to replace. I guess it's okay if the owner has the money. Depending on how much you charge for cleaning
Good Grief!! You need to bring a small Shop Vac with you when you see a place like this. I would NOTeven THINK about going any further without vacuuming everything out. I would ALSO be wearing a mask bad as it is because you do not know what is in all that dust!! Get some masks and wear them when have a nasty job like this unless you want to get sick!!
Well, it's better than under a trailer in raw sewage any day I would say. Maybe not by much 😅 I feel the guy being a mechanic for over 30 years, there was one car I refused to work and it had maggots and dirty diapers in what used to be the floor board. They had trash stacked level with the hump in the center of the vehicle. Ridiculous. 🤮
probably would have just bent the closest guide tabs up with large screw driver/prybar, then hammered them back down afterwards. I would say just bend the lineset over a bit, but with my luck it would pop and blow the whole charge in my face, costing me labor and material. 🙄 "if not for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all!"
If my furnace room was that nasty I would be too ashamed to call for service before I gave it a good cleaning.
Some folks have no pride at all.
Absolutely take 5 minutes with a vacuum
Same here! I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing it looked like that.
I could be wrong here, but I suspect this is a rental.
trailer life ..
I feel i need a hazmat suit just to watch this video
indeed
Ditto
@@danwesten2771 agreed, lol
Wow, i could only imagine what the evaporator coil looked like.

“Last week I couldn’t spell engineer. Now I are one…”
Pretty much every mobile home that I work on is exactly like that. There is no room for the line set to be out of the way
It’s truly amazing at how some people live isn’t it?
I watch a lot of auto repair vids. Some people drive around in dumpsters, then wonder when mice eat the wiring under the hood.
Forgot step 1, either run or get out shop vac and clean up work area before starting. Doesn’t pay to work in filth. Charge extra for cleanup. Just imagine what that A coil looks like!
Yes, I would prefer to clean up the mess as well first as long as the customer approves the charge.
You never repair or clean without getting paid or authorized. Doesn't pay to do favors for free either, you can just charge someone extra on the back end, it's actually illegal.
That unit has a bad case of the fuzzy wuzzys 😂
There were dust bunnies multiplying in the blower wheel!
You get a head lamp too. I use one all the time. It helps me to see what I am doing in any light conditions. Keeps my hands free.
I got a LED light bar headlamp off Amazon. Best purchase ever. It’s rechargeable too.
You would think someone could break out a vacuum cleaner, good grief. Yep that was a rough one, but you got it done. I felt like I needed to shower after just watching. I can only imagine what you felt. Good job

You should have brought the vacuum cleaner in and cleaned it and charged them for it
good idea
You mean the whole house?
I would have cleaned the whole area with a shop-vac before touching anything. Otherwise tuff area to work in as it was so close, you did a great overall job

If the outside of the inside unit looked like that I'd hate to see the evaporator coil. Did you take a look at it when you had the blower out?
Bet they got the lint hose from the dryer running right in there
Good thinking 🤔
Excellent fix curtis. I think the clothes dryer was exhausting into the air handler room
Keeping units clean is also essential for the performance of a unit indoors and outdoors, good job young man!😊
Had one like that yesterday in a mobile home hadn’t been touched in 25 years and it showed. Had to use my puller to get it off. Wheel and housing cleaned up good though.
I can't image what the filter looks like... Probably covered with the owners socks and underwear. lol!
I can't tell you how many times I've said the same thing regarding previous installer not thinking about future repairs.
Seen that before when the unit didn’t have enough intake size for the unit, it was pulling in air wherever it could.
I'll bet the coils are packed full and made the motor run extra hard...bet the fan is jam packed also
C o v i d ain't got nothing on that dust bunny system. You breath that for a few years your immune to any sickness. lol
If you can't spell it right. Just don't spell it at all.

My last service call was a three year old refrigerator that quit, cockroaches had built a nest underneath it and shorted out the compressor. They were trying to hide
Curtis could made extra $100 for 15 minutes worth of vacuuming
No way I’d be there working on that. Looks like they never used a filter
The Worst i have ever seen.. not sure how you handle situations like this, all i can say is you are one over the top service tech.. I couldn't imagine not saying something. God bless you.
Holy moly Rocky. 😂
Nasty dirty unit! But great job! If thats a rental the owner needs to have that crap cleaned! 😳😊
I wish you'd taken footage of the coils, I imagine those were also filthy. Also, where was the filter?
Probably wasn’t any, most renters I’ve encountered won’t replace them. They just throw them out
I want to walk away from that job. Ain't never done it
Has anyone mentioned the need for rubber gloves and a mask to do this project without contracting some kind of funky disease?
I’m sure that this renter just assumes “isn’t that what all furnaces look like?”. 😱
Did they ever hear of a filter 😮
36:41 😮 shocking haven’t seen buss fuses in anything in a long time
I can’t only imagine what the evaporator looks like.
Where was it? Oh, under the dirt.
How in the World does something get this Filthy Dirty ? Disgusting is an Understatement. 🤔👎
I probably would have walked away
I admire your perseverance!!

Ktichen fires are always an accident per insurance, just saying.
I normally leave wheel on old motor when washing that way i can spin the wheel i doesn't matter
Great job Curtis she was a crusty one would cutting drain and pulling line set over made things easer just a thought thanks for the video
Pressure washer may have worked. Great Job Sir. Well Done.
Thanks 👍
Your patience is a virtue!
No way !!!you need to go in there with a shop vacuum and biohazard suit first and charge them for the time!!! Need a trailer hitch work table?
Great job,Curtis!
Thanks!
It looks like they tried to save on heating costs by running the dryer exhaust into the air intake.
I would like to know how much crap was on the coil and filter.
Looks like whoever installed that line set wanted to make removing the blower as difficult as possible.
I almost had to pump it down and move it

what a sheet hole, wonder what the rest of the house looks like.
I wouldve taken a shop vac to that whole closet while you were out in the van replacing the motor so it wouldnt be so nasty when you came back
I bet the coil in that unit is super clean
Seen crap like this before that is just nasty as heck
Looks like the whole inside of the furnace needs power washed as well.
That nasty of a mess I wouldn’t even set my tool bag down. I would’ve turned around and walked out.😮
Not even for a customer that gives you $50,000+ in business a year?
@@HVACGUYno Curtis we wouldn’t it’s called having dignity you need to learn it Curtis old pal

There's a reason why those brown capacitor wires are always so long. I put the cap where it's easy to get to.
That a fire waiting to happen.

Damn that 😮

Most likely a renter

Do you know if there was a filter on that system?
Just filthy.
