I worked as a apartment maintenance engineer. For about 30 years before I retired. I was in electronic radio repair in the military, went through 2 different schools for different MOS before my time in the service ended. I graduated top in both schools. So I was pretty good on low voltage, After I got out of the Army I worked as an electrician apprentice for a few years Installing power in houses and office buildings. So I gained a grasp of the higher voltage. I got into apartment maintenance and the old supervisor taught me about air conditioners and refrigeration and the refrigerants and I went to school and got my certification. the last job I had before I retired I was on for about 20 years. The ground in that area had a lot of minerals in it and it just seemed to attract lightning all the time. We would have a lot of those control boards going out on our heat pumps. If you are new to the AC repair field, get training at a school , things are changing and getting more complicated and newer gases being used, knowledge is key to a successful career.

Wow, What a video ! Bottom line you got them cooling. Congrats !
i Attack FUSE BLOWN calls a little differently in Package 📦 units.
    1) Whenever i Have a Fuse Blown on a Package unit i Want to know if its a Thermostat & Wire Issue or a Unit issue.
    2) First - Disconnect thermostat wires from unit.
    3) second - Jump out unit with jumpers or Home made jump box & Make sure unit Works By itself. Run for 5 minutes Min. Check cooling & Heating. 5 -10 minutes each. if All is Well.
    4) You know where the issue lies. thermostat or wiring.
    5) Disconnect thermostat wires at thermostat.
    6) separate all wires at both ends and check for shorts between wires.
    if all good
    7) Replace thermostat & Sub base Complete. Never replace half a thermostat. Do some fresh connections. that way u know all is good.
Crazy Video Curtis. Bottom line you got them some cooling. That's all that counts right now on a friday afternoon. with some heat coming in.
Can't wait to See the board install video. that's going to be interesting. maybe our maybe not. who knows with hvac calls.
if You are Getting shocked with 24 volts that bad You might want to start wearing gloves of some kind. humidity must be very high. i'd Recommend getting a box of nitrile gloves and throw a few in your tool bag.
    take care curtis.

Fascinating video, Curtis, and well done on getting some cooling sorted out. That control board looked like it was at an odd angle. Personally, I would have taken it out to examine it and see if there was anything going on behind or with the board mounts that could be causing a short. In my experience, when a job starts getting longer and longer I start pondering if I've missed something hidden in plain sight.

Sometimes if it's troubleshooting & it's a odd one i'll ask them if they can give me some space, tell them i need to concentrate on a Wiring diagram etc.
if they still don't get the hint i'll say -
How Would they like it if i was breathing down thier neck at thier work.
i need some space to think & zone in.
i'll come get them when ive got it figured if they wish.
but sometimes you got to be alone to figure it out.
allways - Just stay calm though.
      Remaining Calm is Key.
      it's Just a Job.
We can only do what we can do.

my suggestion when chasing down a short, disconnect the bonding wire from the common at the transformer to prevent false positives as well as remove the thermostat and then begin checking for shorts to ground. ( isolate the circuits and execute a search)

I can't tell you how many times I've been working longer hours than I wanted just to get the system to cool. Now in the heating season, there's only so much anyone can do to get heat SAFELY!!!

Killing me Curtis, super easy that you made complicated. First off shut the power off. Remove contactor low voltage wires from contactor, leaving the common from transformer on the right side. Run a piggy back or jumper off the 24volt hot side of transformer to the red thermostat wire. Then take the blue/black thermostat wire whatever they are using for common, connect to right side of contactor coil. Then take a wire/jumper from the yellow thermostat wire and connect to left side of contactor. Now when you call for cooling compressor and outdoor fan will engage. Now take a little brown fan relay (24v coil), run jumper from green thermostat wire to relay coil, from other side of relay coil run jumper to right side of contactor, now you have complete path. Then take the high speed from indoor fan place on the (1) contact on relay and the fan motor common and place on (2) contact (basically the NO Contact). Boom fixed till Monday. When the thermostat calls for cooling the thermostat will send 24 volts to the contractor and indoor fan relay coils, closing contactor and the NO contact engaging indoor fan and compressor/outdoor motor

    • @billj4859
      @billj4859 4 месяца назад +7

Just wire the motor hot and don't bother with the relay. Easier, and you don't sacrifice or have to charge for the relay. The cooling will still cycle with the thermostat.

Those low voltage shorts are always fun. Looks to be a fairly new unit. Warranty? About as much fun as attempting to do warranty work for ICP. How many other folks have trouble with them? Not a distributor....nope....well we can't warrant the part. AND...there's no other ICP dealer in town!

They're one of the only manufacturers that require us to send them parts back and require us to install their replacement part that they send us. So we have to get a customer going with our parts and then return later with the manufacturer warranty parts to replace the item for the second time. Lol

I came out of the electronics field into HVAC. I love finding low voltage issues. I never ever apply power until I find the problem. It stresses out the electronic components. You need to know the ohms of all the components like the contactor (14 ohms) and find the short that way.
