Tesla Model X P90DL shuts down with 14 km/8 mi range left

  • During my usual drive from Elverum to Alvdal (167 km/104 mi), the car ran out of juice with 14 km/8 mi left just 7 km/4 mi away from the supercharger. This came as a surprise, but at the same time, I was afraid something like this would happen.
    The cause of this is probably that BMS was knocked off and didn't know what the max and min values were. This could be due to many supercharger sessions we had in our Europe road trip we had a week before.
    The fastest solution when this occurs is to get a tow from any car. But in this case, the park brakes wouldn't disengage. So the only way out was to wait for a flatbed. The price for the service is usually 3000 NOK ($350/€350). Tesla warranty doesn't cover this car because it has passed 100k km. But insurance covered it. I only had to pay 500 NOK ($50/€50) for the rescue.
    I am now a NAF member (www.naf.no). For that, I have unlimited rescues without paying anything extra. The membership cost 1140 NOK per year. Now I can mess around a lot :)

    The tow mode problem you had is a known bug. I wasted an hour on that too when I was changing tires. To engage tow mode, you slide to ON then immediately OFF again, and the slider will go to ON. It's messed up.

      Diesel Ideling Myth:
      Long Long time a go when our grandfathers were young. Both diesel engines and battery/electric starter motor technology were also young. It was difficult to get a diesel motor running in any other than perfect weather conditions, to cold intale air, engine too hot, oil to thick ect. Also, battery capacaties were much lower, starter motors were weak ect.....
      Considering all the above, the un written law with drivers and owners of deisel equiptment evolved as follows basicly: "once you got your diesle running, it is BETTER leave it running till you get back home"..
      So, now a days it seems the above may still be influencing owners and operators actiona along with the Machoism of wantiong all to know that this man own/drive a Macho Diesel Vehicle perhaps.
      Modern Tow Vehicles Idling:
      Even new tow truck vehicles need to keep all their saftey lights on along with also provide power to all the hydrolic equiptment to load up the vehicle, ecample slideing back the massive truck bed/load deck into the load position, winching up the vehicle on the deck, sliding the deck back up over the wheels into the transport vpssition ect.
      So, it actually is mandatory the tow truck driver keep his vehicle powered up in orber to not need to call of a battery jump for his tow truck due to running his battery to low.. AND most of the hydrolic actuators get their hydrolic presure from a pump coneted to the power take off from the diesel engine. A 12/24 volt electric hydrolic pump just won't do the big jobs....
      I personaly have 3 diesel and 2 ICE vehicles . With modern technology it is now said and scientifically speaking n proven, if you idle your vehicle for more than 15-20 seconds, it is better to turn it off and re start. And this is what I do daily. Example: One stop light I need to traverse regularly has almost a 90 second cycles thru time. I actually turn my vehicles off at this light and in ligh at a drive thru window, banks-fast food ect.

      Yes, safe to say ALL chemical actions to include human life have adverse chemical conciquesnces to it's own enviroment........
      AND
      Modern Life of our species (7 billion of us now n growing) is perhaps the LARGEST amount adverse chemical released into it's own home, not just one tow truck in Bjorn's video sadly......

    A small generator. ThT has a single phase 220-240 volt outlet with a cable to provide power to car would be economical and while maybe only 30-40 amps charging rate you pull it out a fire it up and plug in and wait an hour or so then your on you way. Friend of mine brought a small 5000 watt generator with him so he could go places in mothers Maine where there aren't any people and he used the small generator in a small utility trailer and he Used The Tesla Hotel and he said while it wasn't as good as grid power it worked.
    Next time your towing if you have a small gas generator it could get you out down the road even though it's a pain to luck around its still better than a tow.
    Sorry for your problems on that trip
    :-)

    It would be nice if any EV would have at least a CHAdeMO or CCS >output< for helping others in such situations. This would be the prerequisite for using "new generation" booster cables. Sono showed that feature at their Sion prototype (at least for 230V output).

    Li-ion and BMS with wrong data can be very unpredictable escpecially when doing only partial (dis)chargres. It is wise to do cycle 100->0 % and 0->100 % sometimes, not because it would be good for battery chemistry like at Ni-Cd/NiMH accumulators, but in order to make calibration of BMS and prevent such sudden battery "death"

  • @i3looi2

    For the rage/ranting ppl in comments:
    Well.. shit happens. Now let's not generalize. k ?
    1) The car is past the 100.000 km mileage milestone.
    2) He pushed the limits of the battery [myself wouldn't let it go below 30km ]
    3) If it's a software issue with detecting/estimating the correct battery charge [maybe will get better]
    4) Probably the fact that he was towing a trailer messed-up with the dashboard range estimations [maybe it's something Tesla omitted]
    5) Most important fact: could be an isolated faulty battery case, not present in other teslas.
    Bottom line: YES shit happened. Shit happens with petrol car as well. IF it was a software issue, guess what: it will get better and better and more bulletproof with each iteration. *But that is not a reason to generalize and discredit the upcoming future.*

    You are meant to get a tow truck for electric cars which can re-charge you on the road, enough to get to a charging point. In future any other electric car will be able to give you some power, even if slowly. So this won't be a problem for very long, although it might be still for a few years.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  7 лет назад +15

      It must provide fast enough juice though. Waiting 1-2 hours for slow 3,7 kW juice is not good enough. It should be a 20 kW DC or something at least.

      @HansKruse 7 лет назад +5

      A chademo charger would be fine, but even a level 2 charger would be good. Anyway I never ran out of juice ☺️ even in Norway. Just strange nobody offered that. I think it will come as it is so obvious and Tesla could provide it to relieve range anxiety for new buyers.

    • @nightshadowblade
      @nightshadowblade 7 лет назад +7

      I've been thinking about this for a long time now. There should be vans or trucks with a built-in 50-100 kWh battery and fast charger that can deliver 50-100 kW. Basically a mobile Supercharger. Also, there should be a heavy duty powerbank on the market, with a capacity of at least 2 kWh for emergency situations, like this one, or off-grid work. It would be a box that you can carry around, maybe the size of a conventional 12V battery, but Lithium-Ion-based and able to deliver up to 3kW. It would take about 30-35 min to transfer 1.5 kWh to the car battery. That should be enough for roughly 10 km at low speed, very low speed with a trailer. These emergency units should be rentable or buyable at every gas station and every towing and emergency service should have some of them, bigger versions with more capacity and higher speeds of course, say 5-10 kWh and 7-14 kW. Just imagine if the charge unit the emergency guy used to charge your 12V battery with would have been bigger and charged your car at the charge-port. Even a charge at only 3 kW would have been better than all this stress and the towing, even if it would have taken 1 hour. You could have taken a walk there and filmed stuff. ;)
      Also, Tesla should built-in an emergency brake-release.

      @stephen_101 7 лет назад +5

      As the other guys have been saying, I wouldn't be surprised to see breakdown service vehicles get fitted with a high capacity battery - say 10 or 20kwh. Just enough to zap some juice in and get the customer to the next charging point.
      Most already carry a tank of petrol and diesel, so it's a logical progression.
      You can just imagine the phone call: Hello I'm sorry to bother you, but my car has broken down 'cos the battery is flat. "No problem, we'll send someone to zap you as soon as we can".

    Simple. You're pulling the trailer uphill which means the voltage drop is much higher. Once it breaches a certain lower limit the car will shut down to protect the battery.

    I got an older S 2013 and it is on my mind to carry a battery pack that can juice the car up 4-8 miles. They sell Tesla battery packs (Ebay) that you can easily convert into a power bank for a Tesla like a charger for your iphone that a lot of people carry in their backpacks. It will take like 2hrs to boost but hey you will not be stranded. I'm looking into it right now :)

    I sometimes drive my Model S 85kWh to zero and had it already three times a few kilometers below. Never had a problem doing this. But if you see the power limit drop below 200kW (for a P Model), then the charger should be near. What I always every few month is balancing at 100% and drive it down to zero to give the BMS a chance to adjust. For this you have to top up, drive down to zero and then top um again. Then the BMS knows where the batteries are.

    There is no reason for the truck driver to let the engine running unless he uses A/C , heater or some other power consuming device on. It's a small truck so it takes no time to run again normally after 20 min. Air brakes hold the air until you release them they don't require the engine running since the air is stored for parking purposes too.

    You should have App for battery health, Kman I think have one. You will see voltage difference between cells. To see the largest difference you should look when the battery is in bottom or top on SOC that is then you see the most. You can hunt which group of cells is way off.

    My SWAG: due to added load, you momentarily peaked just below the min allowed voltage and it triggered the low charge mode. Under lower load/current, you might have been able to fully extract those 14km of range left.

    This was at midnight on our way home with 2 kids. Sent the wife and kids home with an uber. It took me several hours to get home waiting on the tow truck then charging.
    At the supercharger it would not even charge until we jumped the 12v battery.

    Batteries are good for lots of things. But when it comes to moving heavy loads (like a car) it’s useless.
    There’s a reason internal communication work as you can go from an empty tank to full in a few minutes and lasts 2-4 times as long as a battery which takes almost a day to charge from empty

    still did a better job than the nissan leaf in the same sort of predicament.
    when my 2012 LEAF SL dies on me (happens fairly often, i only get ~35 miles from a full charge) the 12v battery is pulled low immediately and as a result i can't even turn the car off (yup, so 12v gets pulled VERY low and damages the battery sometimes). with 12v low i also can't charge (only tried level 1 charger in that state, maybe L2 or L3 would have worked?) - i have to hook up jumper cables for a while just to get the car to enable the normal charge port!
    can't wait for my tesla model 3 (i'm in queue, delivery estimate between feb and april 2018). even if this happens to me it's still better than what i've got right now!

    I truly think (even though I fully understand that it would likely be VERY slow) there should be an array of solar cells built into a portion of the body of EVERY Tesla so that in situations like this, at least one could charge the batteries (even if very slowly) and hobble to the next charging area without absolutely reliant on having to call a tow truck, etc.
