Frank Opmeer an electric 4x4 car could theoretically have 4 motors which would be awesome for a 4x4 car. It would be like a combined open and closed diff car.
To be fair a cheap 1999 cherokee is more capable offroad than a new one. So price really doesnt translate to being better offroad, who buys a Tesla to be as good offroad as a jeep? Thats not the point.
Perhaps Bjorn should have let the Jeep-pilot drive his model X. He seemed like a very patient fellow who knows what he's doing. But I guess he'd knew that particular track also a lot better than Bjorn did. Like he said in the clip he should have investigated the track better before attempting this. Well, fun to watch and at least someone else (Bjorn) has tested how well a Model X handles an impulsive off-road trip. (just as bad as any modern car with clipped on plastics)

It's really difficult in the winter to have an overview of the situation because the snow just hides everything. I'd personally try this in the summer with some offroad tires.

Best advice is to keeps the stops to a minimal and drive a bit faster so you can work off your momentum rather than the motors. That way you don’t get stuck as easily and get across obstacles without them breaking.
Don’t apologize to your followers. Actually thank you for doing things we wouldn’t dare to do with ours. That was entertaining and looks like fun to drive.

Tesla Motors OWES you big time. This one video, to me, sells that car more than any other video/commercial I've ever seen. Really, the added challenge of the icy skin of an already bad terrain. Wow! what a ride.

The car is fully capable and the electric control of the tires seems to work quite well but it doesnt have the right tires or ground clearance necessary. And he is a terrible, possibly first time off road driver. When there is an electric vehicle designed for this with big tires and high clearance I think we will all see that ev will be the best for offroad as well
Peter Lindbeck I agree with you, he didn’t do the best job at showing its abilities and it would definitely do better in more capable hands. Range Rover or something similar would fare better than this Tesla with the same road tyres in my opinion. There’s no reason electric vehicles won’t do well off road- as soon as a good fully electric off road vehicle is produced it perform very well. I just am not pleased Tesla’s ability compared to compared to cars i have seen in the same class. However as you said, it wasn’t in capable hands. I would be interested to see how it would fare with a professional.
@@jwhite7643 It did pretty well for a performance-focused 6000 pound 7 seater mini-van SUV with a relatively low ground clearance and shabby "efficiency focused" tires, along with a amateur off-roading driver... Most "performance" oriented SUVs wouldn't last a second off-road. Of course, compared to a Jeep Wrangler with huge-ass off-roading tires and gear, it didn't fare very well, but for what it is, it did pretty well
Any lift, nice tires and underbody protection? I don't see any mention of either. Yes you can get them for your model X. It won't make it a true off-roader but would help.
The silence in power up situations is really amazing! I was also quite impressed by your steep learning curve! It was visible that towards the end you had gained much more sense of where to be slow and careful and where to give a decent amount of power to make it through. From a more experienced point of view I can say: You have to take care of every car when going offroad. They are all more or less vulnerable and there are always possible traps! Take the limitations of your car into account, or your experience will be almost certainly an expensive one. I think the Tesla X did quite well and is very well amongst the typical abilities of most modern SUVs. Not so bad with the 4 wheel drive, but of course not a highly capeable offroad car. The differential lock is clearly missing and it is vulnerable at the edges. With some more experience you should be able to go through this type of conditions and terrain without damage though. Thank you very much for that great video! I really loved the dual view of inside and outside. You covered very many interesting offroad siutations, it is quite educational! Maybe even more than some professional offroad testing videos.
I had the rear wheel trim (the plastic thing) tear out of my X...it is actually one long piece that goes from the front to the rear! Also, the front part contains a parking sensor!!

bbalila i agree. It could be salvaged. The little bracket clamp piece is broken but it's internal & doesn't completely hold the bumper fender in place. Perhaps it can be clamp fastened & everything else can be tightened around it.
Yes! And it worked! There's 2 differentials in the car and 4 rotation sensors for the traction control system. The TCS detected that one of the wheels was free spinning, so it applied the brake (it clamped down on one wheel while the others were spinning) to allow the left front tire to spin instead of the right front tire.

What is the size of those tires? Btw, the problem in most cases where you got stuck was ground clearence, so i dont think the Model X is made to go off asphalt

That was really bad actually. I expected electric cars to do much better as they can control the individual electric motors whereas normal cars have to go through a differential.
It's good for doing what most tesla owners need to do. But to me at least, it's not amazing by any means. Most awd cars do much better than that let alone 4wd and 4x4s and I'm talking just about the traction and not about ground clearance, approach angles and stuff that the car is not meant for. Just look at Audi's quattro which uses a self locking diff (Torsen). It handles terrains like this with ease. Evs have separate electric motors and could just have a 4x4 mode, for turning all 4 wheels at the same speed. There is plenty of room for improvement in my opinion and should be much easier.
Rosen Sofroniev U are right mate, but take in consideration the weight of the car and the only reason why he got stuck is because the ice broke. Also the tyres are not offroad ones.
Yeah you are right, that's why I said EVs and not specifically the model X which has one at the front and one at the rear axle. I think Rimac puts four motors and probably the new Roadster will as well. Anyways you can see at 03:44 how the front wheels are slipping and the rear don't react at all, meaning that even the two motors it has can not be forced to run at the same speed.
I'm pretty confident the drivetrain can do wonders off road, it just needs better tyres and a lot more ground clearance. Also, the wheelbase is just too long.
This was fun to watch. So Model X does not have limited slip differentials front or rear? Any time you raise a tire, you've lost thrust from the corresponding axle. That's pretty much no-go for off-road driving, which you seem to have realized : )
Range Rover Classic and Land Rover Defender have open diffs in front and back. So the cars that have been used for Camel Trophy is according to @oozk a "'no-go' for off-road. I call bollocks on you claim. What the X lacks for off-road is ground clearance and suspension articulation. If the X keeps the speed on the back and front motor the same speed, the X's drive train will work exactly the same as a Land Rover Defender with the diff lock engaged.
Exactly, you really need a fully articulated suspension for this type of work. Maybe if RR comes out with a RR Sport with four torque vectored motors we'll see some crazy EV off-roading. Tesla did preview a pickup, so maybe soon.
I'd be curious to know if it's possible to put a plow on an X and plow snow? As far as I know they're AWD but not 4 wheel drive but due to their weight might do the job! Any thoughts, comments?

Did you put winter tires on it before this attempt. I know its allwheel drive but it makes a huge difference. And its not a high clearence jeep. It looks to only have like a regular car clearence. I would love to hear what this damage cost in the end. Sorry to see this happen. Good luck. It was a great effort.
That was SUPER good! Amazing! I mean, I would never..but that's your job. Tires..what kind of tires? Tesla should maybe consider a wrangler type vehicle! Wouldn't that be cool? And have breakout solar panels so over 8 hours you could get 10% charge or so. You know..pull out and unfold in the desert!
Fair play for having a a go at some light off-roading in the Model X, but I think if your are going to spend Model X money and want to do it properly - Range Rover is the answer :-) However, I think it does demonstrate that it is not really an SUV. But I do like that your tried and your acknowledgement of your limitations etc.

Peter Lindbeck I agree with you, he didn’t do the best job at showing its abilities and it would definitely do better in more capable hands. Range Rover or something similar would fare better than this Tesla with the same road tyres in my opinion. There’s no reason electric vehicles won’t do well off road- as soon as a good fully electric off road vehicle is produced it perform very well. I just am not pleased Tesla’s ability compared to compared to cars i have seen in the same class. However as you said, it wasn’t in capable hands. I would be interested to see how it would fare with a professional.
@@jwhite7643 It did pretty well for a performance-focused 6000 pound 7 seater mini-van SUV with a relatively low ground clearance and shabby "efficiency focused" tires, along with a amateur off-roading driver... Most "performance" oriented SUVs wouldn't last a second off-road. Of course, compared to a Jeep Wrangler with huge-ass off-roading tires and gear, it didn't fare very well, but for what it is, it did pretty well

Any lift, nice tires and underbody protection? I don't see any mention of either. Yes you can get them for your model X. It won't make it a true off-roader but would help.

The silence in power up situations is really amazing! I was also quite impressed by your steep learning curve! It was visible that towards the end you had gained much more sense of where to be slow and careful and where to give a decent amount of power to make it through. From a more experienced point of view I can say: You have to take care of every car when going offroad. They are all more or less vulnerable and there are always possible traps! Take the limitations of your car into account, or your experience will be almost certainly an expensive one. I think the Tesla X did quite well and is very well amongst the typical abilities of most modern SUVs. Not so bad with the 4 wheel drive, but of course not a highly capeable offroad car. The differential lock is clearly missing and it is vulnerable at the edges. With some more experience you should be able to go through this type of conditions and terrain without damage though.
Thank you very much for that great video! I really loved the dual view of inside and outside. You covered very many interesting offroad siutations, it is quite educational! Maybe even more than some professional offroad testing videos.

I had the rear wheel trim (the plastic thing) tear out of my X...it is actually one long piece that goes from the front to the rear!
Also, the front part contains a parking sensor!!

bbalila i agree. It could be salvaged. The little bracket clamp piece is broken but it's internal & doesn't completely hold the bumper fender in place. Perhaps it can be clamp fastened & everything else can be tightened around it.

Yes! And it worked! There's 2 differentials in the car and 4 rotation sensors for the traction control system. The TCS detected that one of the wheels was free spinning, so it applied the brake (it clamped down on one wheel while the others were spinning) to allow the left front tire to spin instead of the right front tire.

That was really bad actually. I expected electric cars to do much better as they can control the individual electric motors whereas normal cars have to go through a differential.
Rosen Sofroniev sorry but in my opinion it was actually amazing, the car did great.
It's good for doing what most tesla owners need to do. But to me at least, it's not amazing by any means. Most awd cars do much better than that let alone 4wd and 4x4s and I'm talking just about the traction and not about ground clearance, approach angles and stuff that the car is not meant for. Just look at Audi's quattro which uses a self locking diff (Torsen). It handles terrains like this with ease.
Evs have separate electric motors and could just have a 4x4 mode, for turning all 4 wheels at the same speed. There is plenty of room for improvement in my opinion and should be much easier.
Rosen Sofroniev U are right mate, but take in consideration the weight of the car and the only reason why he got stuck is because the ice broke. Also the tyres are not offroad ones.
Teslas don't have a motor per wheel, just a single motor front and rear with normal open differentials.
Yeah you are right, that's why I said EVs and not specifically the model X which has one at the front and one at the rear axle. I think Rimac puts four motors and probably the new Roadster will as well. Anyways you can see at 03:44 how the front wheels are slipping and the rear don't react at all, meaning that even the two motors it has can not be forced to run at the same speed.
Dang, if my car kept making those dinging sounds every few seconds then I would find the fuse or the speaker and yank that sucker out!
Or... you could just disable the proximity/parking sensors...

I'm pretty confident the drivetrain can do wonders off road, it just needs better tyres and a lot more ground clearance. Also, the wheelbase is just too long.

So Model X does not have limited slip differentials front or rear? Any time you raise a tire, you've lost thrust from the corresponding axle. That's pretty much no-go for off-road driving, which you seem to have realized : )
Range Rover Classic and Land Rover Defender have open diffs in front and back.
So the cars that have been used for Camel Trophy is according to @oozk a "'no-go' for off-road. I call bollocks on you claim.
What the X lacks for off-road is ground clearance and suspension articulation.
If the X keeps the speed on the back and front motor the same speed, the X's drive train will work exactly the same as a Land Rover Defender with the diff lock engaged.

Exactly, you really need a fully articulated suspension for this type of work. Maybe if RR comes out with a RR Sport with four torque vectored motors we'll see some crazy EV off-roading. Tesla did preview a pickup, so maybe soon.

When I reversed back the whole front bumper tore off on a half buried rock!! I know how it feels but plastic panels pop back in usually!! The X did way better than expected....

Did you put winter tires on it before this attempt. I know its allwheel drive but it makes a huge difference. And its not a high clearence jeep. It looks to only have like a regular car clearence. I would love to hear what this damage cost in the end. Sorry to see this happen. Good luck. It was a great effort.

That was SUPER good! Amazing! I mean, I would never..but that's your job. Tires..what kind of tires? Tesla should maybe consider a wrangler type vehicle! Wouldn't that be cool? And have breakout solar panels so over 8 hours you could get 10% charge or so. You know..pull out and unfold in the desert!
