Ozark: Ruth Langmore Kills Javi Elizonndro | Season 4B Ep. 8 "The Cousin of Death"

  • Ruth rants that she used to love to listen to him talk and how the Byrdes will tear everything to the ground and make you feel like they care. She saves most of her ire for Wendy, who she calls “fucking soulless” and a “predator with no conscience.” She’s sadder about Marty, noting how he pretends to care but has no real emotion. And the key line: “You really think everything you do is to protect your family?!” This is the excuse that Wendy uses in particular. It’s arguably not been true for some time now. The ruthlessness of Wendy comes through in her call to Javi to lure him into the trap. “Great! See you soon! We’ll put some Champagne on ice!”
Javi walks into the office, Ruth emerges and shoots him three times. There’s silence as she leaves and the score builds.

While that would have been cool, I think that she was just done. I feel like she said her piece when she spoke to Clare. I think Ruth truly blames the Byrde's and you can see that's where all her emotions are channeling. At this point, it's literally just about avenging Wyatt. The real closure for her would be to deal with the Byrde's, somehow. But you can see Ruth is lost now.

Talk about delusion of grandeur, you’re synopsis is way off. Anybody who rooted for the Byrde’s at any point is programmed by visual art. Marty gets involved with the cartel and goads Del into violence. Which in episode 8 of season 1, it’s revealed how ruthless Del can be when he orders his men to kill an associate who betrayed him. And Bruce Liddell is analogous to Marty’s relationship with his son. He knows Bruce is the loose cannon that needs supervision. Yet much like his parenting style, Marty uses apathy as his leadership/parenting style.
And Wendy not only co-signs the $ laundering but then she has an affair. Which leads to her lovers death and never gives that man’s child any truthful resolution about his father.
There is nothing lovable or anything someone would want to knowingly chose to root for them. And that’s just from season 1

Sorry but no sympathy for Wyatt’s murder. If he was as wise as he was portrayed to be early on then he should’ve known death was coming to Darlene soon or eventually. He's a rabid dog with basically no impulse control but also they want us to believe he's highly intelligent to the point that he's a legitimate threat to the position of Omar Navarro.
This was the end he was always destined for - getting mag dumped by someone he's never met, pissed at him for a crime he probably doesn't even remember... so how the fuck did anyone high up in the Cartel ever kid themselves that he would be a competent leader?

Soooooo this is what makes the show great. Ruth absolutely should have killed all three of them right after Javi but that’s not her character. This makes it look like someone else did it and she could then just take her family and what cash she has and go. While leaving them alive allows them to obviously keep trying to find a way to spin what happens to javi but more importantly it’s 3 witnesses that know Ruth killed him. While Marty and Wendy in the end do no crack initially to javis mother the other girl (forgot that characters name) spills it and costs Ruth her life. You already know what Marty and Wendy would do if it came down to sacrificing someone for themselves well being.

Wyatt was forever asleep... and in this scene, his cousin was death...
Bruh, the way this episode contextualizes that Nas lyric (hell, that whole album) is nuts.

Ruth is a hypocrite though. She has assisted in covering up multiple murders and hired Jonah to wash her money. I hate how most of the characters who do evil things in this show convince themselves that they are good and deserve justice.
Additionally, Ruth didn't kill Javi for Wyatt, she did it for herself. To get revenge.

Ruth undermined her own badassery and stealth planning by not killing the Byrdes and Claire, too. Claire because she would give her up--which she did later on. The Byrdes because they would also sacrifice her if push came to shove. Which they did. Ruth had TWO chances to kill the Byrdes after Wyatt's death. She spared them. Heck, she should've killed them just for Wendy lying to her face and promising Javi in 3 months' time. She was just buying time until they could flee to Chicago permanently. Ruth, Ruth...you never start down a path like this unless you are willing to go all the way. Ruth's reluctance--her stupidity--got her killed. I have zero patience, tolerance or empathy for stupid people.

    This scene left me dissapointed.
    It doesn't hold together.
In a building like that, in the evening, five people can't be in there without being spotted by cameras, and there's a code for every door, or a tag that's registered etc.
Ruth didn't even have her hood up, when she walked out.
I'm sure several cameras spotted her.
Very lazy writing and no logic.
This scene kinda ruined the show for me.
Abd besides, Ruth didn't have to kill Javi.
Even the mexican drug cartells have standards for behaviour.
A sloppy, chaotic moron like Javi, doesn't live long.
He was a sitting duck for the top dogs who wanted to replace Navarro....
They surely wanted to kill him.

I have said this many times. Very few people picked up on this. They actually became the Clintons. Marty may not be like Bill for much of the series--but the moment he green-lights Jonah killing the PI...he becomes Bill for sure. Wendy had become Hillary long before. She is exponentially worse than Marty.
