- Every state has its go-to sandwich, including New Jersey. Many people will say the pork roll egg and cheese is the first to come to mind, but for Rutgers University students, it's all about the Fat Sandwich. The Fat Sandwich is an overloaded sub, stuffed to capacity with a mix of fried ingredients and condiments. It debuted in the late '70s and has since become a national phenomenon. The original Fat Sandwich, filled with two cheeseburgers, french fries, ketchup, mayo, and lettuce, is still served at RUHungry? in New Brunswick today, along with over 10 other "fat" varieties.

Alumnus here, Class of 2011! This hits different at 2AM while a little tipsy. The oil and heaviness of the sandwich absorbs the alcohol, making you warm and cozy. Moved to NY after graduating and sometimes assembled this myself at the neighborhood deli after late nights, keeping the tradition alive. Now entering middle age, it doesn't hit the same like it used to.
when i was at rutgers i got one of them sandwitches and i got sick but it was amazing

Rutgers has some of the best food spots. Between the grease trucks, Stuff Yer Face, Thomas Sweets, Hansel and Griddle.

I used to get these on college Avenue at Rutgers and they were delicious. The guys working the trucks were awesome cool. Those were great times.

I'll be honest, I was surprised to see that the "cheeseburgers" were just the patties with cheese. I thought they were going to put an entire cheeseburger, buns and all, inside the sub roll.

If RU Hungry? expanded to the West Coast, I have a hunch they'de be a huge hit with students attending the various UC and CSU schools scattered throughout the state. If they decided to set up shop here in Monterey, I can imagine one of their sandwiches being stuffed full of calamari and fries and another with fish and chips.
inSouth africa we have a similar Fat Sandwich its much bigger uses a soft french loaf , known as a Gasby , Starting with a basic chips and franks 10usd to the full house with eggs chips salad , steak which cost about $15 , you can feed a family of 4 .
As a Rutgers alumnus, I was so lucky to have tasted some fat sandwiches before. So far, Fat Cat is my favorite.
Rutgers Greese Trucks were my teenage post skateboarding grub. So good I ate the whole thing every time.

As a Rutgers alum, I lost 30 lbs in the year after I graduated and I attest all of that to my stoned butt no longer ordering a fat sandwich.
As a NJ resident, when I don't want to drive that far, I also pop by Hoagie Haven on Nassau Street in Princeton. Same idea, less distance.

At Kennedy's in the hood been making that since day one. They call it an italian cheeseburger in NYC.
Hoagie Haven is also amazing in princeton with the sanchez and phat lady. Having big hoagies with moz sticks cheese french fries chicken tenders and sanchez sauce. Phat lady has Cheesesteak, Mozzarella Sticks, Fries, Ketchup, and Hot Sauce. they have plenty of other subs like this and other things as well. its open until 2 am and amazing I get it too often
