    Just a FYI, it takes years for egg shell to leach calcium into the soil. I recently found a recipe in which you grind up egg shells, lots of them, then bake and grind them up. Place in a bucket and let leach 10 days. Strain off and use one ounce to a gallon of water. Spray on leaves, helps with end rot too.

    All the experiments I've seen with that egg trick and other tricks like the fish show that it doesn't actually help, but it can hinder the growth of plants because since it's not broken down into the useasble minerals for the plant, it actually takes up nutrients like nitrogen to break/compost down.

    • @ErinCrooks-vw3ig
      @ErinCrooks-vw3ig 8 месяцев назад +2

      I would be interested to know who else has done an experiment on this. Kevin at Epic did last year, but I believe the egg was barely any different from the control tomato for him.

    • @wendya1250

      I have done a side-by-side with 12 plants; six received an egg, six went without. The ones that received an egg actually did slightly produce worse. The eggs have to break down first (or weather) to become bioavailable. For eggshells, it takes about 2 years.

    • @lisawallace3124
      @lisawallace3124 8 месяцев назад +2

      The "theory" behind putting an egg in the hole is that blossom end rot is typically caused by a calcium deficiency and the thought that egg shells are made of calcium. While it's true, raw egg shells calcium takes a LONG time to break down and be available for the plant/fruit. I save the shells, bake them and crush finely. The baking converts the hard-to-use calcium in the shells to a more-easily-used form and finely crushing makes the pieces small enough to break down more quickly.

    • @jelatinosa
      @jelatinosa 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@lisawallace3124 I understand the "theory" or hypothesis behind it, but it doesn't have the science to back it up. If anything it has more science against it actually working.

    Becky, txoricero, you might find it as choricero. Is a pepper tipical from de Basque Country in the north of Spain. Is a pepper that you collect when it is red, then you hang them tied with some cord and leave to dry. Once it is dried you can storage them, and when you want to use them you put them in hot water for about half an hour to rehydrate and then with the help of a spoon you take put the "meat" of the pepper, discarding the skin.
    You can use pimiento choricero / txoricero in many steps typical from the north of Spain:
    Patatas a la riojana (stew of potatoes and chorizo, this pepper and pimentón (similar to paprika)
    Marmitako (stew tuna with potatoes and peppers)
    Bacalao a la vizcaína (cod in a sauce made with onions and this pepper)
    Search for its uses as pimiento choricero, is more usual to find it written this way.

    In Northeast PA pepper plants, tomatoe plants and zucchini grow in abundance. We would never plant the plants that close together. Maybe that is why get much larger plants and better yield. Cherry tomatoes grow like weeds. Many people used chicken crap as fertilizer.

    To speed up effort and time hardening off your plants, cover them with window screen. Just regular ole rolls of fiberglass window screen you get at Walmart.
    I put my plants out in full sun under window screen supported over them and they're good to go for transplant in a few days. No more constantly taking them indoors and out.

    I started lots of eggplants this year. Breaded and pan fried...they taste like hot buttered bread. Harvest fruits before they get too big and full of seed. The individual plants get massive. The black beauty have thorns around the stems.

    I follow another channel that runs a market farm and they said the most important thing for peppers and tomatoes was to make sure the ground was warm enough, that ground temperature is very important. I love their channel as there's currently 4 generations working there and they share a lot of helpful tips.

    Becky, would you say that one saves money planting your own veggies and herbs, or is it more about having fresh ingredients you know where they come from? I love gardening and growing things, but scared I end up spending more than just buying from the local farmers

    If someone has as many raised beds as Becky, why would you mix your beds vs keeping one for peppers, one for tomatoes, one for potatoes, one for flowers, potatoes, etc?

    • @palmsandsand
      @palmsandsand 8 месяцев назад +2

      I’m a fan of mono-cropping for some things, but the benefit would be if one bed gets attacked or does not do well (soil issue or nutrient deficiency), you don’t have all of a specific crop in the bed to fail. It’s somewhat ensuring the harvest. Intercropping also makes the beds look pretty. And lastly some plants do need other plants to minimize pests.

    I always plant my tomato plants with an egg and a handful of bone meal in the bottom, place the tomato deep and cover over with soil, sprinkle epsom salt over the soil and then cover over with a thick layer of chemical free grass clippings. I grow only heirloom varieties so every year we only grow a few varieties apart from each other so we can collect the seeds. Same goes for peppers, one year hot peppers and the next is only sweet peppers so we can collect the seeds. All of beds get topped with a good 3 inches of our homemade compost before planting in them. In the fall all the beds get covered over with shredded leaves and chicken poo and let it sit all winter. In the spring we turn it all in and then add the compost on top.

    The calcium in the egg shells is great for the plants. Im sure the egg provides nutrients too. I save egg shells and grind them up into powder then add it to the soil. Works amazingly well as a pesticide too

I hope you don't mind but as you get your flowers I might give you a tip too help. I always find that greens help to stand the flowers up. You can get it from just about anything I see in your yard. Things like branches from your tree. long stems from your bushes . just Google it research it you'll probably find lots of greens you can do if you Google flower design. I can't wait to see what you come up with. I'm so excited

    Just a quick look here so I'll come back to it but initially my questions are how many human beings are you feeding and what kind of pots are those are they healthy pots ones that don't Leach weird things I'd like to know and I'm in Oregon I start stuff late and it seems to catch up as opposed to starting stuff too early although I know people that take the chance and start things early and get a running start but not always and since I don't have the luxury of starting things over I'm going with what usually works for me especially with our changing climate here where it's got it so hot in the summer time but it's still cool in the springtime at night I find that sweet spot to be after Mother's Day appropriately

    We don’t eat a lot of kale either. I usually do kale chips or I’ll dehydrate the kale and make a powder out of it so I can put it in chicken salad, potato salad, and macaroni salad. It adds a little extra goodness to all three of those. Just for future reference lol

    Hi Becky and garden beds!
    Have you ever done any analysis of the annual cost of hardware, tools, structures, seeds and ammendments for a single years' garden? You could spread the cost of some such as the seed starting containers and trays and even harvested seeds across an expected duration. I'm sure you don't really have time to do this, but maybe plan on including some of it in next years' garden journal.

    In my experience vining sweet potatoes (vs. bush sweet potatoes varieties like Vardaman ) aren't great companions for tomatoes, peppers, squash...The vines of the sweet potato tend to choke the other plants out. Also sweet potatoes set roots along their vines and that's where they grow their tubers which can also really disturb the roots of the nightshades in particular. Vining squash and sweet potatoes might be able to coexist but bush squash varieties tend to get over run. I'm in the Midatlantic where sweet potatoes are bent on world domination - LOL. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that sweet potatoes in the PNW are better behaved.
