- Vilcabamba is a small town in Southern Ecuador, known for its long-living residents, beautiful views, and moderate climate. Though there is a lot that you can do in this little Andean town, Vilcabamba has always been known as a laid-back place and is best enjoyed by doing absolutely nothing.

/// ABOUT US ///
Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Ecuador. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around Ecuador. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful and underrated Ecuador truly is! Thanks for following along and please leave a comment to say hi!

Our favorite place to stay in all of Ecuador. You guys do a really good job with your videos. I want to comment on Mandango. I saw in your video river stones up there. That is clearly an old terrace deposit from an ancient river (I am a Soil Scientist). Really interesting.
That’s so cool! We thought it was so interesting that those rocks we’re keeping the structure like that. Thanks for watching!
Hi Tom, I realized the layer of rock as well. I'm just a Sales guy but watch a ton of stuff on archeological digs around the world. I picked up that, at one time there was water there or a river. My wife told me I was crazy.
@@glenncapitanio3706 Yes, I mapped soils in Virginia. We sometimes found river terraces 200ft above rivers. Ecuador landforms are much much younger and therefore, more dynamic. Those terraces are full of resistant stones and shield the landscape making it more resistant to erosion. Eventually, they become the high points.
Where is the place you stayed ? What is it called ?
Airbnb?
Hahaha love the ending! 🤣 This video rocked!! By far one of my favourite places to relax in Ecuador! You’ve captured the beautiful mountains so well! I’m saving this video so I never forget our time spent in Vilcabamba! Stunning!
Glad you liked it!! Such an amazing area. Wish we had more time there!
My wife and I just came back from Ecuador…your videos were very helpful! Keep up the amazing videos!! Cheers!
Thank you! So glad they were helpful… that’s always our goal! :)
After 12 years of back and forthing between Vancouver Island and Vilcabamba, we’ve finally made the move down.We absolutely love it here and don’t miss Canada at all.
Wow how exciting for you!!
I went there as a teenager with my school classmates. Teenagers, at the time, I don't think we appreciated anything. All I remember is that none of the kids wanted to eat beef, there was a rumor that it was horse meat. Silly kids.😆
Now I want to go back and enjoy the beauty of Vilcabamba. Well done guys, thanks for bringing back memories. 👍❤
Wow what a cool school trip! Glad we could bring back some good memories for you :) You should definitely go back one day!
Cool grasshopper ! love Boms away for sharing this trip with us !
It was huge and very cool! Thanks for watching :)
Another amazing video..wow..such beautiful scenery....you really are a joy to watch...enjoy your videos immensely....keep up the fantastic job...be there soon. HOPE to find time to visit villacamba...but out first place will be Cuenca...choa for now..always be safe
Thanks Tom! We are glad you enjoy them so much! You definitely need to make a trip to Vilca from Cuenca! Worth the trip for sure :)
Thanks for another great video! We look forward to visiting there soon!!!
Thanks for watching! Enjoy your trip there!! :)
Another great video. My wife and I have been researching where to live in Ecuador for a year. We have had the opportunity to live in Mexico and Thailand but with your added help, I think Vilcabamba will our final destination. You both make great videos. I always look forward to your content when it arrives. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for a great video. The drone work showed how breathtakingly beautiful the area is. You guys were so animated in this video, I can tell the place impressed you. Good luck & happy trails as I await the next installment. 😎🙏🏻
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it :) The drone does capture everything so beautifully!
Is really good to find someone who likes adventures and is compatible. Keep having fun guys❤
Great video! I love, love, love Vilcabamba and the surrounding area and am planning my move (finally) within the next few months. Yes, it's true there are so many different belief systems and cultures that combine to make Vilca, if nothing else, very interesting. Two things, I will never do, however - eat cuy (OMG they are pets, not food!) and climb Mandango. Perhaps 30 years ago, but now? NTY. So enjoy your videos. Have fun!
Your move to Vilacabamba did u finally go for it?
I was suppose to be going aswell but got ill.
@@Manifesting_Secret_Sketchbook Unfortunately I had a health emergency and just a month prior to my move ended up in the hospital. 4 surgeries and almost 3 months total in the hospital, I am now trying again to get my move to Vilcabamba back on my radar. It will be about 6 months, but I've not given up. Just delayed... How about you?
I'm looking forward to being a Conspiracy Analyst some day in Vilcabamba. ;-) Izhcayluma seems like the perfect place to stay for a week or two, eh?
It’s definitely entertaining ;) Izhcayluma was AMAZING! Highly recommend staying there for a while if you can! It’s a paradise!
Great video guys! Hope you’re still having fun.
Thanks! We’re always having fun :)
Wow 😮 I’m so jealous of both of you. I’m an Ecuadorian living in USA but I keep dreaming about one day going back to my home Ecuador!!! Awesome video!!! 👏😊 This video brings me so much joy!!! By the way I subscribed to your channel!!
wow, it's so nice that youtube brought me your channel. This was a perfect way to start the day and dream of some day visiting Ecuador.
Love it!!!
We went in May and it absolutely took our breath away! Have fun guys
It’s an amazing place!!
My mother was from this province, she passed away this year , I’m definitely visiting this place and doing some of the things you did. Thank you for this beautiful video!
Wow! Great video of one of my favorite places on the planet. We left last week for Cuenca love it here as well but Vilcabamba and Izhcayluma still my faves!
Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching Julie!! Enjoy Cuenca… another great place :)
Thank you for sharing with us, such an awesome place. We plan to visit Vilcabamba.
Amazing! Hope you love it!
I am speechless for such amazing videos and beauty! Thank you so much for sharing your love for traveling and appreciation for nature.
I just finished your Montanita video. We stopped there on our way up the coast from where our friends lived about an hour south. We’re not night life people but it was a nice daytime visit. I just love Vilcabamba! We drove down from Cuenca and stayed at that same place ! I would imagine breakfast is still included with your room each day. Hopefully you hiked up hill that leaves from the cabin area. This reminds me that I really need to get back to Ecuador. Great video ! TU.
Fabulous vid of the mountains and your hike. Bucket list destination now. 🌻
Thanks Jillian! Definitely a must-do on the Ecuador bucketlist! :)
Well obviously I was so excited I commented before I watched the whole video. 😊 I’m really glad we took our mom there before she passed away. Fond memories are SO much better than money or possessions. Thank you for the post !
Awesome video. You guys are getting really good at this!
Thanks!! :)
I think that was the *cutest* couple moment ever I've seen of yours so far when he was on the mountain and his hair was blowing all wild and you exclaimed:""Woohoo, look at that man!!!" And I said to myself, "That's right, Girl, you be excited for yourselves, you and your man!"🥰
Felicitaciones, por visitar mi pais no entiendosu idioma pero veo quelo disfrutan mucho . Gracias x estar en Ecuador
We visited Vilcabamba in 2012, 2013, 2014. All visits were a most enjoyable experience. We got to know many friendly locals, expats and tourists. Many from Canada. Had a number of meals at Izhcayluma and all were great. If you make it there say hi to Sharon and Will from us. They run a local eatery called, La Casa de Los Jones Restaurante. One day we hope to visit again and share a meal together. : )
Glad you enjoyed it there so much! We’d love to return one day :)
Loved this. Can't wait to watch more of your videos
Thanks for watching!! Glad you liked it :)
Awesome video. 👌 Breathtaking mountain views. ⛰ Cuy....either you like it or don't. Sending you positive vibes. Can't wait to see what's next. Take care.
Thanks so much for watching! :)

I love your video. Guys! And also I enjoy to see how you enjoy the tours! You’re amazing 🤩
Great video. The place you stayed is the type of place we could settle down in for a couple weeks. And ya love that shower. Keep living the life!
You guys would love it!! Such a great place to stay… we wish we could’ve stayed longer! Definitely add it to the visit list :)
Hermoso vídeo y lugar😉
Hi guys!! I am here watching you suffer when you climb the mountain, perhaps more than when you climbed the Santa Ana hill in Guayaquil .. that is for the brave with good resistance .. I could not ... you have beaten me by knowing Vilcabamba before me that I am Ecuadorian !! .. but how nice that you continue to show places as beautiful as Vilcabamba .. I imagine that you have left there with renewed energy in those crystal clear waters of the river, with that pure air and with those landscapes that provoke wanting to stay there forever, with such hospitable people ... perhaps you can confirm if indeed foreign families from the US, Canada, Europe live there in Vilcabamba ... Ok, I'll tell you, see you guys later!
For me, this is your best video so far. So much information. My husband and I live in Manta. We will be sure to visit Vilcabamba and stay at this resort.
Great to hear! Thanks too! :) Definitely add Vilca to your must-visit list!
We were excited to see this video! We contacted the resort because we really wanted to stay there in September so we can check out Vilcabamba during our stay but they are block booked up for a yoga retreat! Anyways…we also ordered the waterproof backpack and got it already. We are going to use it when we come to Cuenca. Thanks guys!
Oh too bad! Maybe you’ll have to try stay there another time! Hope you love that backpack… we use it ALL THE TIME in Ecuador! It’s so helpful to have when the weather is always changing. Enjoy!
GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIENDS!!...THANK YOU FOR VISITING OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY....WE WILL WE WAITING FOR MORE VIDEOS.....
Lovely series of videos, I've recently discovered you both ! Your lively content is refreshing and upbeat. I've subscribed and 'liked' all your videos that I've watched so far.
Eric, please don't take this the wrong way but when you have your hair pulled back it nicely exposes your face with clarity and easy focus for the viewer to watch you speak. That is just a personal comment and just my opinion ! You both are beautiful, fresh and real, no matter how your hair goes !! Keep 'em coming kiddos !
Hi Terry! Thanks so much for following our Journey! You are so kind and I do not take that the wrong way at all. Glad you are able to give constructive feedback in a nice way and thank you for the suggestion! We will try to keep it beautiful, fresh and real!
Thank you guys for this video.
Thanks for watching! :)
Awesome video!!! Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thank you!!
Glad you're enjoying Ecuador. Cui is an acquired taste, but they know how to prepare it and cook. Ecuador has a diversity in their food, four zones and lots of different foods for a small country.
Thank You so much Eric and Sarah for another beautiful video! Vilcabamba is my home and I Love it so much. Next time you are here PLEASE stop by and say Hello to me. I'm in the square yet I see when you were here that my door was closed. ;-( I would love to hug you in person and Thank You for all of your beautiful videos of my country! Your bloopers were great!
Sad we missed you! Wish we could’ve said hi! Glad you are enjoying our videos so much :)
This is AMAZING !!! You guys are SO AMAZING !!!! EVERYTHING is SO AMAZING !!!! OMG !!!!
YOU’RE AMAZING!!!!
Love, love, love!
Does Ecuador still have a mask mandate? What about in Vilcabamba itself?
Yes masks are still required at all times (inside and out). Fines and mandates are enforced by each town so smaller communities like Vilcabamba are often more relaxed (especially with outside masks).
I'm staying at Izcyluma right now. Fabulous place!
Thanks for sharing the beauty of Ecuador. I was born in Manta but raised in New York and had nothing to show my kids and grandkids
Very cool! We hope our videos can show parts of home to your kids and grandkids 🥰
Been binge watching Sar!!! Hope you're well. Xoxoxoxo
Aweeee this makes me so happy!! 🥰🥰 Thanks for watching Al! Hope life is good for you!
Beautiful videos.
Thanks.
You were in Vilcabamba great, it is near to my city Loja.
Yes we drove through Loja! Beautiful location :)
Guys, you blew me away with the photographs, absolutely gorgeous, you truly captured the beauty of Vilcavamba, are you staying in Ecuador?
So glad you enjoyed it! :) We will sadly be moving on from Ecuador at the end of August when our tourist visas expire.
Hi! We really enjoy your videos. We moved to Vilcabamba 5 years ago. We both were blessed and retired from our jobs early. It's definitely a different, slower-paced, tranquil lifestyle. We're from Florida and we hated the heat in the summer. In Vilcabamba it's always spring. We're really impressed by all you've seen and the places you've traveled in Ecuador. We'll keep following you and let us know where you are currently.
How amazing! We loved Vilcabamba and would definitely visit again one day!
WOW well it would be great to meet you aswell whenever I do there.
You have to visit Cerro Puñay, it is a magical place to camp and enjoy the sunrise and sunset ... Greetings Guys!
Saludos! Soy de Loja EC 🇪🇨
The first time 2016. We really got to see the entire Milky Way. ( thank you Pieter,,Dieter @ Ichcyluma )
The stargazing is AMAZING from Izhcayluma!
What incredible guys, you eating roast cuy, wow !!! Guys, when you complete all your adventure around the world, return to Vilcabamba so that you can live more than a hundred years, with health and happiness. Eric, you've been buying a telescope so that you can contemplate that beautiful night sky full of stars ... Or maybe you want to live in a town on our coast, facing the sea, where there are also many foreign families settled on the Spondylus route. Hasta la vista, babies!! 🙂🇪🇨✌🏼🤗
How much Spanish do yall know? Thank you so much for the content! I went to Ecuador with school and seeing your Cuenca video brought back so many great memories! Hope to go back soon. Enjoy your travels!
Hey! We are both fluent now actually. But always learning more! Thanks for watching!
I want to go!! nice town
It’s a great place to visit!
Gooood
Wonderful video oh, I didn't know about the swing I was there a year-and-a-half ago with a friend that wanted to retire there, but it looks like I'm the one that's going to retire there. LOL
It’s new! They built it during the pandemic (about a year ago). So when you retire there you’ll have to go :)
Soooo Nice!! Greetings from Amsterdam ❤️
WOW!!! I'm sold! Just gorgeous! Now I just need to trade my big house in rural Esaan Thailand.....for a house in Ecuador....somewhere!??! Thanks really to you both. D
😍🇪🇨
How beautiful vídeo..
Awesome
Vilcabamba is near to Loja city, you can fly from Quito or Guayaquil to Loja. Vilcabamba is the best place of Ecuador, good video
Is beautiful.
I love your videos guys
Did this place seem like a family friendly hosteria? I see on their website that there is one space for a family up to 6 people. Just wondering if you felt it had a fam friendly vibe. We will be coming to Ecuador for the month of January with our 3 littles (10, 8 and 5)
Also what place so far would you recommend for a family that you've been to? I have watched all your videos and have now thrown our original travel plans out the window! PS we would love to buy you all a coffee on person if we end up in the same area at the same time. You both seem super fun!
Oh absolutely!! There was a couple there with a young son and they were having a great time. Lots of things to do, great pool and very fun vibe. What kinds of activities does your family like to do? Or what were you hoping to do in Ecuador? We could make some suggestions based off that :)
Minute I saw the shower... I know where you are! We stayed there as well! 😊
Oh that’s so cool! Great place 😄
@@EricandSarah totally....we initially travelled there for a raw food retreat and stayed longer so stayed there. June and July...the flowers...oh my!! Huge and fragrant. Lovely people...of many cultures. Glad you got to experience it.
Where is it I want to stay there leaving Sunday for one month in Ecuador
Y'all are so complimentary as a couple. So BEAUTIFUL to see how you guys get along. My God, if one is scared of heights, DO NOT go on this hike. Do you know what the altitude in feet above sea level the top of Cerro Mandango is? P.S. - Y'all are a couple of "swingers"!!!!! ha ha ha ha
Hahaha thanks for the good laugh Glenn! And the compliment as well… we do have a lot of fun together :) The hike is definitely not for the faint of heart with the thin ledges. But our guide was great at keeping us safe. The peak is about 6,500ft.
do not miss the health fair , at a property just a few meters down the hosteria it is saturday and sunday from 10am till 6pm...
Shoot unfortunately we’re already moved on from there!
What a good video, nor do I know as much about Vilcabamba as you do. Now I would recommend that you please use a lot of sunscreen and glasses here, the sun is stronger than in Canada
it looks like a very nice place
Vilcabamba is the dondé village many of its inhabitants easily reach the age of 100 and over, and still work in the fields and still walk.. They are not just myths or false stories, they are real..
the local inhabitants historically have benefited from the negative ion waters and fresh air from the amazon.... it's the only water I drink.
certainly has changed since my time there
How many hours to hike up the Mandango from Vilcabamba town center ? Nice video .
To the top of Mandango, probably 1.5-2 hrs on average (depending on how fast you hike). But the rim loop we did was 6 hours total!
Great vid! I am looking at moving to Vilcabamba from the States in 2 years,,,,,looks amazing. What was the name of the restaurant at the gigantic swing and is it over looking Vilcabamba?
Wonderful video, I ENJOY even I'm from the an OTHER of LOJA but is AMAZING, but my place is gorgerous too Gonzanama, Cararango mountain but heat FROM there) LOVELY views
What was the name of the place you stayed? And what was the cost? I’ll be traveling to see my in-laws that retired there! I’m so excited. I’d like to check out your hotel 😊
Izhcayluma! The link is in the description :) Price depends on what kind of room you want… they have a great variety! Happy travels!
😍🤩🤤
The real attraction of vilcabamba are its elders who exceed 100 years, there are more than 80 elderly people over 100
Yo soy de Loja!! Deberían tratar de hacer un video en español!! Hi from PortChester NY!! 🙏🙏
Amigo dejar de quejarse la gente es libre para es mejor en Inglés con respecto lo digo bendiciones.
Thanks for your great video! Do you have any advice on how to get to Vilcabamba from Guayaquil?
Hi you can fly from Guayaquil to Loja, and get a taxi. Also you can fly from Guayaquil to Cuenca and travel by bus or minibus to Loja. After that take a taxi or a bus. It takes 40 minutes.
@@jaimeaguirresuarez thank you for your reply. I tried to Google a flight from Guayaquil to Loja but couldn't find any. Do you possibly have the name of the local airline that offers this flight or possibly a website, please?
Well Tame usually did that job. I have flighted from Loja to Guayaquil in Tame. Maybe for pandemic has suspended the frequencies. You can travel by Cooperativa Loja. The service is good. Also you can fly to Cuenca and after that take a bus to Loja.
@@jaimeaguirresuarez OK, thank you for your advice, much appreciated :)
Is there anything to do there ?….looks like not much is around ? Thx !
The draw of Vilcabamba is definitely the slow pace of life. There’s lots of hikes, community events and beautiful nature to explore… but it’s definitely not a high activity place if that’s what you’re looking for :)
Thank you for answering my gym question.
I'm 63 years old. Been religiously on a plant based only diet for the past 3 years. ( No meat , chicken, dairy cake or deserts) Just salads, beans nuts fruit and veggies.Yes...Not easy I literally reversed heart desease.
I just was in Manta for the past month and loved it but I think this environment (fresh air organic vegetables and fruits) could be more adventitious to me. Peace and a healthy lifestyle.
What.wouuld the avg 2 bedroom apartment go for long term rental.? Security building?? I'm thinking I could do well on a $1,500 butget.
You had mentioned that most of the people live outside the center of town. Why??
I would think anything medical or dental would be available in Loja.
Of course as an older gentleman I'm thinking about where is the hospital and how good is it as far as state-of-the-art technologies and physicians.
I really appreciate your insight
People who do what you do are not only those who can change lives but you also literally can save lives.
So just understand how valuable the information you share really is
A big thank you
Hi Steve. It sounds like Vilcabamba could be a good fit for you if you're looking for very natural foods and lots of outdoor space! We believe this is the reason most people live outside of the center of town. Most of the community desires to live on a piece of property, growing their own food and enjoying the outdoors. Unfortunately we only spent just over a week there so we do not have reliable information on long term rentals, costs, medical, etc. If you have facebook, I would recommend joining the group "Ecuador Expats". There are very wonderful people on there who would be happy to answer all of those questions for you! There is definitely a hospital (and other essential services) in Loja so we did hear people talking about going there when needed but we can't speak to what equipment they have.
Also thank you for your kind words! It means so much to us that you find our information useful. That is truly our main goal with each of our videos... to entertain and inform :)
what did it cost to stay overnight?
😉🇪🇨👍
@5:55 ufo!!!
Is there a gym. I like to work out daily
There wasn’t a full gym (with equipment) but there is a large yoga area where I’m sure they’d let you use for workouts and MANY hiking trails around :)
Disfruten, esto es Ecuador ! 🇪🇨😎
Can i smoke weed 430 there? Cause if so im definitely in!!!
🌲❤️
Ahí hay mucha gente retirada from here
DID they kill the guinea pig in front of you before eating it?
when was the last home invasion
I want to leave US 😩🤌🏽.
The oldest verified person lived to 122 years and 166 days, just an FYI.
I'm from Ecuador and I will definitely *not* try guinea pig 🙃
Great Video! However, please be aware that CUY i NOT an Ecuadorean "delicacy" First of all, it's found only in the Highlands (not in the Coast). Second, most people actually find it really disgusting! It was more popular in the past, but nowadays is not something that people would really look forward to eating. And again, you won't find it in the Coast, as you probably know by now.
