After 12 years of back and forthing between Vancouver Island and Vilcabamba, we’ve finally made the move down.We absolutely love it here and don’t miss Canada at all.
Our favorite place to stay in all of Ecuador. You guys do a really good job with your videos. I want to comment on Mandango. I saw in your video river stones up there. That is clearly an old terrace deposit from an ancient river (I am a Soil Scientist). Really interesting.
Hi Tom, I realized the layer of rock as well. I'm just a Sales guy but watch a ton of stuff on archeological digs around the world. I picked up that, at one time there was water there or a river. My wife told me I was crazy.
@@glenncapitanio3706 Yes, I mapped soils in Virginia. We sometimes found river terraces 200ft above rivers. Ecuador landforms are much much younger and therefore, more dynamic. Those terraces are full of resistant stones and shield the landscape making it more resistant to erosion. Eventually, they become the high points.
Hahaha love the ending! 🤣 This video rocked!! By far one of my favourite places to relax in Ecuador! You’ve captured the beautiful mountains so well! I’m saving this video so I never forget our time spent in Vilcabamba! Stunning!
Well obviously I was so excited I commented before I watched the whole video. 😊 I’m really glad we took our mom there before she passed away. Fond memories are SO much better than money or possessions. Thank you for the post !
Another great video. My wife and I have been researching where to live in Ecuador for a year. We have had the opportunity to live in Mexico and Thailand but with your added help, I think Vilcabamba will our final destination. You both make great videos. I always look forward to your content when it arrives. Keep up the good work.
Another amazing video..wow..such beautiful scenery....you really are a joy to watch...enjoy your videos immensely....keep up the fantastic job...be there soon. HOPE to find time to visit villacamba...but out first place will be Cuenca...choa for now..always be safe
I went there as a teenager with my school classmates. Teenagers, at the time, I don't think we appreciated anything. All I remember is that none of the kids wanted to eat beef, there was a rumor that it was horse meat. Silly kids.😆 Now I want to go back and enjoy the beauty of Vilcabamba. Well done guys, thanks for bringing back memories. 👍❤
Great video! I love, love, love Vilcabamba and the surrounding area and am planning my move (finally) within the next few months. Yes, it's true there are so many different belief systems and cultures that combine to make Vilca, if nothing else, very interesting. Two things, I will never do, however - eat cuy (OMG they are pets, not food!) and climb Mandango. Perhaps 30 years ago, but now? NTY. So enjoy your videos. Have fun!

We visited Vilcabamba in 2012, 2013, 2014. All visits were a most enjoyable experience. We got to know many friendly locals, expats and tourists. Many from Canada. Had a number of meals at Izhcayluma and all were great. If you make it there say hi to Sharon and Will from us. They run a local eatery called, La Casa de Los Jones Restaurante. One day we hope to visit again and share a meal together. : )

Great vid! I am looking at moving to Vilcabamba from the States in 2 years,,,,,looks amazing. What was the name of the restaurant at the gigantic swing and is it over looking Vilcabamba?
Hi! We really enjoy your videos. We moved to Vilcabamba 5 years ago. We both were blessed and retired from our jobs early. It's definitely a different, slower-paced, tranquil lifestyle. We're from Florida and we hated the heat in the summer. In Vilcabamba it's always spring. We're really impressed by all you've seen and the places you've traveled in Ecuador. What was the name of the place you stayed? And what was the cost? I’ll be traveling to see my in-laws that retired there! I’m so excited. I’d like to check out your hotel 😊
What incredible guys, you eating roast cuy, wow !!! Guys, when you complete all your adventure around the world, return to Vilcabamba so that you can live more than a hundred years, with health and happiness. Eric, you've been buying a telescope so that you can contemplate that beautiful night sky full of stars ... Or maybe you want to live in a town on our coast, facing the sea, where there are also many foreign families settled on the Spondylus route. Hasta la vista, babies!! 🙂🇪🇨✌🏼🤗
Did this place seem like a family friendly hosteria? I see on their website that there is one space for a family up to 6 people. Just wondering if you felt it had a fam friendly vibe. We will be coming to Ecuador for the month of January with our 3 littles (10, 8 and 5) Also what place so far would you recommend for a family that you've been to? I have watched all your videos and have now thrown our original travel plans out the window! PS we would love to buy you all a coffee on person if we end up in the same area at the same time. You both seem super fun!
Oh absolutely!! There was a couple there with a young son and they were having a great time. Lots of things to do, great pool and very fun vibe. What kinds of activities does your family like to do? Or what were you hoping to do in Ecuador? We could make some suggestions based off that :)
@@EricandSarah totally....we initially travelled there for a raw food retreat and stayed longer so stayed there. June and July...the flowers...oh my!! Huge and fragrant. Lovely people...of many cultures. Glad you got to experience it.

Y'all are so complimentary as a couple. So BEAUTIFUL to see how you guys get along. My God, if one is scared of heights, DO NOT go on this hike. Do you know what the altitude in feet above sea level the top of Cerro Mandango is? P.S. - Y'all are a couple of "swingers"!!!!! ha ha ha ha
Hahaha thanks for the good laugh Glenn! And the compliment as well… we do have a lot of fun together :) The hike is definitely not for the faint of heart with the thin ledges. But our guide was great at keeping us safe. The peak is about 6,500ft.
What a good video, nor do I know as much about Vilcabamba as you do. Now I would recommend that you please use a lot of sunscreen and glasses here, the sun is stronger than in Canada
Yes masks are still required at all times (inside and out). Fines and mandates are enforced by each town so smaller communities like Vilcabamba are often more relaxed (especially with outside masks).
Vilcabamba is the dondé village many of its inhabitants easily reach the age of 100 and over, and still work in the fields and still walk.. They are not just myths or false stories, they are real..
Hi you can fly from Guayaquil to Loja, and get a taxi. Also you can fly from Guayaquil to Cuenca and travel by bus or minibus to Loja. After that take a taxi or a bus. It takes 40 minutes.
@@jaimeaguirresuarez thank you for your reply. I tried to Google a flight from Guayaquil to Loja but couldn't find any. Do you possibly have the name of the local airline that offers this flight or possibly a website, please?
Well Tame usually did that job. I have flighted from Loja to Guayaquil in Tame. Maybe for pandemic has suspended the frequencies. You can travel by Cooperativa Loja. The service is good. Also you can fly to Cuenca and after that take a bus to Loja.
Thank you for answering my gym question. I'm 63 years old. Been religiously on a plant based only diet for the past 3 years. ( No meat , chicken, dairy cake or deserts) Just salads, beans nuts fruit and veggies.Yes...Not easy I literally reversed heart desease. I just was in Manta for the past month and loved it but I think this environment (fresh air organic vegetables and fruits) could be more adventitious to me. Peace and a healthy lifestyle. What.wouuld the avg 2 bedroom apartment go for long term rental.? Security building?? I'm thinking I could do well on a $1,500 butget. You had mentioned that most of the people live outside the center of town. Why?? I would think anything medical or dental would be available in Loja. Of course as an older gentleman I'm thinking about where is the hospital and how good is it as far as state-of-the-art technologies and physicians. I really appreciate your insight People who do what you do are not only those who can change lives but you also literally can save lives. So just understand how valuable the information you share really is A big thank you
Hi Steve. It sounds like Vilcabamba could be a good fit for you if you're looking for very natural foods and lots of outdoor space! We believe this is the reason most people live outside of the center of town. Most of the community desires to live on a piece of property, growing their own food and enjoying the outdoors. Unfortunately we only spent just over a week there so we do not have reliable information on long term rentals, costs, medical, etc. If you have facebook, I would recommend joining the group "Ecuador Expats". There are very wonderful people on there who would be happy to answer all of those questions for you! There is definitely a hospital (and other essential services) in Loja so we did hear people talking about going there when needed but we can't speak to what equipment they have. Also thank you for your kind words! It means so much to us that you find our information useful. That is truly our main goal with each of our videos... to entertain and inform :)
The draw of Vilcabamba is definitely the slow pace of life. There’s lots of hikes, community events and beautiful nature to explore… but it’s definitely not a high activity place if that’s what you’re looking for :)
There wasn’t a full gym (with equipment) but there is a large yoga area where I’m sure they’d let you use for workouts and MANY hiking trails around :)
Every tourist is welcome to Ecuador, Vilcabamba, but not forever because too many people in the area drive away the flora and fauna of the place, which is what makes it unique and beautiful.
After 12 years of back and forthing between Vancouver Island and Vilcabamba, we’ve finally made the move down.We absolutely love it here and don’t miss Canada at all.

Does Ecuador still have a mask mandate? What about in Vilcabamba itself?
Yes masks are still required at all times (inside and out). Fines and mandates are enforced by each town so smaller communities like Vilcabamba are often more relaxed (especially with outside masks).
Is beautiful.
certainly has changed since my time there
Vilcabamba is the dondé village many of its inhabitants easily reach the age of 100 and over, and still work in the fields and still walk.. They are not just myths or false stories, they are real..
the local inhabitants historically have benefited from the negative ion waters and fresh air from the amazon.... it's the only water I drink.
Thanks for your great video! Do you have any advice on how to get to Vilcabamba from Guayaquil?
@@jaimeaguirresuarez OK, thank you for your advice, much appreciated :)
Yo soy de Loja!! Deberían tratar de hacer un video en español!! Hi from PortChester NY!! 🙏🙏
Amigo dejar de quejarse la gente es libre para es mejor en Inglés con respecto lo digo bendiciones.
I really appreciate your insight
People who do what you do are not only those who can change lives but you also literally can save lives.
So just understand how valuable the information you share really is
A big thank you
😉🇪🇨👍
The real attraction of vilcabamba are its elders who exceed 100 years, there are more than 80 elderly people over 100
Is there anything to do there ?….looks like not much is around ? Thx !
The draw of Vilcabamba is definitely the slow pace of life. There’s lots of hikes, community events and beautiful nature to explore… but it’s definitely not a high activity place if that’s what you’re looking for :)
😍🤩🤤
what did it cost to stay overnight?
Is there a gym. I like to work out daily
There wasn’t a full gym (with equipment) but there is a large yoga area where I’m sure they’d let you use for workouts and MANY hiking trails around :)
@5:55 ufo!!!
Disfruten, esto es Ecuador ! 🇪🇨😎
Can i smoke weed 430 there? Cause if so im definitely in!!!
🌲❤️
Ahí hay mucha gente retirada from here
DID they kill the guinea pig in front of you before eating it?
Every tourist is welcome to Ecuador, Vilcabamba, but not forever because
too many people in the area drive away the flora and fauna of the
place, which is what makes it unique and beautiful.
I'm from Ecuador and I will definitely *not* try guinea pig 🙃
Who’s here because of Tomb Raider?
when was the last home invasion
