My wife and I moved to Ecuador in April. I am a retired restauranteur from the United States so the food adventure is very appealing to me. The best Ecuadorian food I've had so far is a specialty of the Manabi province...it is Viche or Biche depending on where you are. A soup that is more like a stew made with fish/seadfood and plantains, corn, green beans, cilantro and most importantly peanut butter. A bowl of Viche is a satisfying meal. Look for it on the coast, especially in Manabi.
Everything with peanut paste in Ecuador is delicious. Biche, Corviche, Cazuela, Bollos, Sango de Camarones, Caldo de Bolas de Verde... Peanuts makes everything better
Ok, let’s begin, the “gross” cone is called espumilla an ancient type of candy, dates as far as 500 years brought by the conquistadors and the priests , second, the food in Ecuador varies according the region you visit and every dish is history some created during the pre Inca era and some after the conquest, it’s a fusion between European and Indian, lastly the white corn is called Hominy very popular here in the states actually is imported same as the Quinua one the best in the world and very well like by vegan people. I lived in Ecuador 10 years and their food is considered one of the best in the world , hope you are enjoying your stay as I did and get to love and learn their history, it’s unique, God bless you and take care❤️❤️
Yea I kinda got offended when they called it gross it's been passed down from my ancestors for years and we still make it every carnaval with fresh guava, when it's made right it's delicious
Exactly, ecuadorian gastronomy is one of the world´s best, espumilla is not gross at all, of course if you expect it to be ice cream you will compaare, but it has nothing to do with ice cream.

Hi, I’m Canadian of Ecuadorian heritage. I will say I have been blessed to grow up with a Ecuadorian mother who is original from Cuenca. She cooks amazing Ecuadorian food. Don’t get me started with my mothers hot sauce. Oh my goodness till this day it’s the best one I ever had and I’m basing this off the many different hot sauces that I tried in my lifetime. Put it this way if Gordon Ramsey tired I think we would fall in love with it. I wish you both of you would try it. Besides that I learn so much from my mother on how to cook so many beautiful healthy Ecuadorian dishes. Honestly, I believe that the food has kept me young and in good shape. It’s basically like a secret for anti aging. Also my girlfriend is French Canadian and I think she fell in love more so with the Ecuadorian food and culture than me lol! That sugar foam is called "Espumilla" (it means "small foam" in Spanish lol), it is very popular! I love it, and it is basically egg whites with sugar haha! @@EricandSarah They eat it raw (which I hate) but the mixture is supposed to be baked and is called "Suspiros" are sold in many bakeries all over Ecuador they are in the shape of large Hershey's Kisses, once baked they are crunchy and delicious... sooo good. give them another chance, but never raw. yuk!
I miss my country, left it for about 22 years ago, when I was a child, at school, I just waited the ring bell to get out of there and buy my "Espumilla" ...my most waited precoius prize, 'cos I saved money for it during a week!!! Today, I can get a crème brûlée in a fancy restaurant, but the emotion for that "gross thing" makes me feel pure and proud for bounch of roads and experiences that I got. Thank you guys for sharing your experience.
The name of the snack is "Espumilla". You are right it is made with egg whites and sugar and it is really tipycal in high land. High landers do no consider it gross. I lime the coastline part , my fiance it's Jamaican and it was his first time traveling to Ecuador he love it , felt sick due to altitude , but he fell in love with the country and he says , food it's great , tasty and extremely affordable, people are nice and friendly and helpful, so as he says that it's going to be he's retiring country to go to , enjoy and have fun and explore the country and its beauty

Tiestos is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. Love the different types of sauces that they give you to try at the beginning with the bread. It feels like a first class experience with a very cultural and intimate vibe. Super recommended!! Ecuador has so much variety of food, you can try a different dish/meal every day!! And the people are so nice and friendly!!

Hi guys, great video, Ecuadorian food is so diverse, it changes depending where you are, for breakfast tigrillo is great, also we have bolones, humitas, calentados, mote pillo and much more. The same for lunch it varies from region to region. The wiggling stuff you guys tried is espumilla, which is egg whites, sugar and a natural flavor, could be guayaba, strawberries, etc and is very popular in Ecuador. You should travel south from Cuenca to the province of Morona Santiago, in Limon Indanza there is a place called Cascadas Coloradas ( Red Waterfalls), it is a nice place to go birdwatching, the water is really yellowish because of the high iron concentration, there is a lot of paths for hiking in the forest, the owner farms fish (tilapia ) for his customers, so it is very fresh, it's a very interesting place. You have to go to El Manantial 🦀 (it's 2 blocks from the cathedral) and try the "encebollado", they also have all kinds of menus with typical creole food, I loved it

Hello. The sweet cone you got is called "espumilla" literally you said "sugar foam" it is a traditional dessert that people love. It's basically a mix of egg white, a fruit called guayaba "guava " and lots of sugar. I used to eat when I was a child. I haven't eaten it for a long long time. Take care guys.

( I would be careful with the pork though, in some places is not very well cooked and trichinosis is endemic in Ecuador) I usually buy it to go and cook it even more thoroughly at home.

Lol, I loved watching this - as you say, espumilla is hugely popular (my husband grew up eating it) but I could never get myself to try it. Thanks for confirming my suspicions that it's not all it's cracked up to be! :p Personally I love cevichocho, encebollado, viche, bolón, sopa de mariscos, patacones... yum!

in cuenca there is a famousp place called jiron its a valley famous for their magic mushrooms and landscape other place that u must visit its valley of cajas or in spanish valle del cajas famous for theirs amazing landscape , perfect por photography the via lactea or if u had luck have a ufo or ovni experiencie this places its famous for that too , years ago cuencas was one of the expenxiest cities in Ecuador with quito and Guayaquil and dont know whow about now but also its cheaper thant galapagos island there prices are expensier than continental Ecuador cities
Loved your video guys, thanks 🙏 for visiting my country, Cuenca is a great city, about the ‘Unknown dessert’ is called ESPUMILLA and you are right, it is beaten white eggs with sugar and some jelly fruit that gives it the color as strawberries or guayaba or mora. But let me suggest you, to always ask your hotel host, where to eat, because you missed a lot of typical delicious food there, such as HORNADO that is pork meat in a brick oven at the highest temperature, it is amazing, also all the sweet treats they have in Cuenca, well hope you have a wonderful visit
Fun video! I have been in Ecuador for almost 15 years and the majority has been in Cuenca and the surrounding area. I had a great time figuring out where the little restaurants were and I think I know where they are. Tiesto is undeniably recognizable to anyone who has spent time in Cuenca. The espumilla is not my favorite, but like you, I did try it - once.
Coffee tastings/comparisons would make an awesome vlog! Except if we both have more than a cup in the morning we get a little wild so not sure how that would go 😉😂

Great video showcasing a range of Ecuadorian food! Looks delish. Can’t wait to visit one day. Also Campari is made from cascarilla bark which we grow here in the Bahamas and export to Italy where they produce the liquor. When you mix Campari and orange juice it tastes like grapefruit juice. :)
My most important suggestion for foreigners is eat hot, well cooked meals just in case to avoid getting sick and be careful where you eat. Food is delicious but depends and who cook it and where. Food is different from one region to another. The seasoning makes a big difference. For example, seafood is much better next to the ocean regions than high in the mountains. Shrimp ceviche is fabulous and tigrillo fantastic but as everywhere else, watch where you eat it. Arroz con pollo, lomito, humitas and bollos are some other dishes that are worth trying.
If you’d like some great paella check out La Tapita Espanol. It’s just around the corner from the Lasso Ordenez Tranvia stop. There’s a Spanish flag 🇪🇸 flying outside. On Sunday it’s an almuerzo for $4. You can get excellent coffee at Cafe Nucallacta on Hermano Miguel. Also Synfonia near Parque Madre. Diego Is the owner. One dish I love is encebollado. It’s a tuna, potato soup/stew. Many consider it a hangover remedy. Love your videos, I just retired here to Cuenca.

You have to go to El Manantial 🦀 (it's 2 blocks from the cathedral) and try the "encebollado", they also have all kinds of menus with typical creole food, I loved it

The sweet cone you got is called "espumilla" literally you said "sugar foam" it is a traditional dessert that people love. It's basically a mix of egg white, a fruit called guayaba "guava " and lots of sugar. I used to eat when I was a child. I haven't eaten it for a long long time.

@@seluis718 Guayaco and Mono are just a colloquial term, but not the correct way to call a Guayaquileño... By the way monos are not just for people from Guayaquil but for anyone rom the coastline Machala, Quevedo, Manta Bahia all are called monos.

It's called espumilla, made with egg whites and a fruit usually guayaba. It's a great treat usually served in the mountain region of Ecuador :)

It's disappointing to see how ecuadorians in the comments try to teach you about the "gross cone" saying it's just eggs and sugar lol when its main ingredient is guayaba, a very sweet fruit grown in Ecuador. I like it but can get tired of it pretty quickly because of its sweetness haha take care guys!

The food is phenomenal! My favorite is llapingachos, seco de pollo (I prefer the coastal version rather than the Andean version - costal version has yellow rice), encebollado, bolon de verde, & tigrillo!

Lol, I loved watching this - as you say, espumilla is hugely popular (my husband grew up eating it) but I could never get myself to try it. Thanks for confirming my suspicions that it's not all it's cracked up to be! :p Personally I love cevichocho, encebollado, viche, bolón, sopa de mariscos, patacones... yum!

in cuenca there is a famousp place called jiron its a valley famous for their magic mushrooms and landscape other place that u must visit its valley of cajas or in spanish valle del cajas famous for theirs amazing landscape , perfect por photography the via lactea or if u had luck have a ufo or ovni experiencie this places its famous for that too , years ago cuencas was one of the expenxiest cities in Ecuador with quito and Guayaquil and dont know whow about now but also its cheaper thant galapagos island there prices are expensier than continental Ecuador cities

But let me suggest you, to always ask your hotel host, where to eat, because you missed a lot of typical delicious food there, such as HORNADO that is pork meat in a brick oven at the highest temperature, it is amazing, also all the sweet treats they have in Cuenca, well hope you have a wonderful visit

Fun video! I have been in Ecuador for almost 15 years and the majority has been in Cuenca and the surrounding area. I had a great time figuring out where the little restaurants were and I think I know where they are. Tiesto is undeniably recognizable to anyone who has spent time in Cuenca. The espumilla is not my favorite, but like you, I did try it - once.

Great video showcasing a range of Ecuadorian food! Looks delish. Can’t wait to visit one day. Also Campari is made from cascarilla bark which we grow here in the Bahamas and export to Italy where they produce the liquor. When you mix Campari and orange juice it tastes like grapefruit juice. :)

My most important suggestion for foreigners is eat hot, well cooked meals just in case to avoid getting sick and be careful where you eat. Food is delicious but depends and who cook it and where. Food is different from one region to another. The seasoning makes a big difference. For example, seafood is much better next to the ocean regions than high in the mountains. Shrimp ceviche is fabulous and tigrillo fantastic but as everywhere else, watch where you eat it. Arroz con pollo, lomito, humitas and bollos are some other dishes that are worth trying.
If you’d like some great paella check out La Tapita Espanol. It’s just around the corner from the Lasso Ordenez Tranvia stop. There’s a Spanish flag 🇪🇸 flying outside. On Sunday it’s an almuerzo for $4. You can get excellent coffee at Cafe Nucallacta on Hermano Miguel. Also Synfonia near Parque Madre. Diego Is the owner. One dish I love is encebollado. It’s a tuna, potato soup/stew. Many consider it a hangover remedy. Love your videos, I just retired here to Cuenca.
