      My husband suffers from that same back problem...it seems to happen more in times of doing less strenuous activity....but when it happens it can put him right on the ground and barely able to crawl to bed.
      The one time he took an ambulance to the hospital they didn't do anything more that give him some pills and released him to go home...he could barely stand up!! So he just suffers through till he gets better...usually about 2 weeks before he walks almost normal again.
      I do suggest you have a doctor or chiropractor look at your back to see if there's something that you need to do to prevent that paralyzing pain!

My my 2007 F150 and 1982 Toyota straight axel, are both 4x4 by necessity, but I sometimes have a guest who can't navigate my hill in 2 wheel drive. The steep hill I descend is a single lane, north facing, with a sheer cliff to my right. Your advice of using neutral or reverse to gain traction is BRILLSANT!!!!!!!! You may have just saved me from killing myself. BTY I have watched nearly all your videos, but this is the first time I've commented. Hydyho, good Neighbors! Matt, you're not an old guy yet, but if you don't pamper your back for a goodly while, and wear a brace when you're lifting, you WILL be an old guy, way sooner than you expect. Look at me: 20 years ago I was a young buck, could do anything I tried. Then I hurt my back and didn't take proper care of it. Now I'm 68 going on 90!

    Lived in the mountains of Colorado for 43 years. Road was a tough one with up to 9% grades. Used snow chains a lot, some years was from late October to May. Had a recycled ski area grooming machine with tracks cut down from 54" wide to 35" wide, still too wide for the narrow many places on lane road. Used a Volvo 1800S with cleated snow chains on front to get home and then switch the cleats to front end and regular chains on back for downhill as now would both brake and steer, Also had a 1952 Willy's Jeep Station Wagon with winch, which ran a fantastic Tequila Ramble, neighbor tried it in a new Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 which broke all four mag wheels and flattened the tires. Moved up to 1/2 ton Ford 4x4 and then finally to a brand new 1976 Ford F-250 which was upgraded with a blueprinted 428 heavy sway bars and heavier springs, hydraulic flat bed and it still runs great. So Matt you folks do a great job out there in Utah but on our old road without chains you would be toasted, as our roads are 99% decayed granite and the chains really work great. And we sure as heck are not amateurs and love your RUclips videos, but cringe when you don't use chains in the snow.

    Love the videos. After watching a whole bunch of them, I was struck with the realization that you don't have or use a simple lever, and many times it would literally be the cats ass for you.
    A chunk of 2x2" quarter inch square stock steel about 6 foot long is all you'd need.. You'll be surprised what you can do with it. A rock, a log, a board with a jack stand,... anything turns it into a lever that you can lift and shift just about anything., If you use it once, you'll use it all the time.

      I was 60 years old when I bought my first 4x4. Just never felt the need. Drove all over the southeast and the mountains of AZ with a 2wd. Just never wanted the hassle of dealing with 4wd - too much unnecessary extra weight and mechanical complexity. I’ve gone places with my 2wd others were worried about taking their 4wd. I’m 66 now, and have my second 4x4 - an old CJ 7, but I still have three 2wd trucks. Between the three trucks I’ve driven over a half million miles, most on the road, but not all. That’s a LONG way to carry the extra weight of a 4x4.

      @@hgj2019 I guess it depends on what u intend to use a truck for, in Canada though you have a death wish if you dare to drive a 2WD truck in the winter, or one without winter tires

    • @hgj2019
      @hgj2019 3 года назад +1

      @@ksich8142 our winters in the southeast US are mild. You will never even SEE a snow plow until you get up into western NC. When I bought that first 4x4 I had lived in the mountains of AZ for three years. They get a lot of snow there (though nothing like Canada). I got by fine with 2wd, but part of my work involved driving a huge snow blower. It got to a point where I could not risk missing work during a snow storm, so 4wd was in order. I also enjoy exploring year round and I could do more with 4wd.
      I will add, though, that the ONLY time I was so stuck in snow I had to hire a tow was when I was exploring in my 2wd ranger. I got hopelessly stuck because a reached a point where someone had stuck their 4wd Jeep in the middle of a single lane mountain road. I couldn’t get past them and couldn’t climb one particular snowy hill. 2wd, street tires. Much of it is about driver skill. I was driving the family station wagon on extremely muddy roads long before I had a learners permit to drive. I have typically found that any traction problems I had were the result of someone else’s driving error.
      BUT, you are right. 4wd gives an extra edge in snow and ice and makes a big difference for some folks.

    • @spudgamer6049
      @spudgamer6049 2 года назад

      I bought a 2wd truck. Was about 2/3 what I would have paid for a 4wd. But I don't do much off road in it, I mainly wanted truck for the bed, hauling stuff that might be smelly, dirty, or too large for a car cab. If I want or need to go off road, I have other options. But I also don't live in an area where I get snow, and the few dirt roads I drive over are either well maintained and/or limestoned or I can detour around when they're bad.
      Or, TL;DR, I didn't need 4wd, but did need a truck, so I bought a fleet style 2wd.
