ATV Mud Boger here, The biggest mistake that I see drivers make in the Mud is running to much air with Hard Tires that load up with mud and become slick loosing traction so my advice is to down air those tires and they won't load up with mud and when the tire treads flex it cleans the mud out so you get traction instead of slip. I drove Road Wrecker as a Kid and we specialized in extreme recoveries. I sure do enjoy your videos. Thanks

I live in Iceland. We use to change our offroad vehicles quite a bit. I have a Landrover Defender 130 on 315/85R16 when offroad and a Suzuki Jimny on 265/85R15.
The main difference seems to be that here in Iceland the mudguards have to cover the tyres, so our offroad vehicles look a bit different, even if beneath that the changes are similar. If I drive mainly on sand, I prefer a finer thread than I see with you. We often drive on top of snow and there the main point is to be able to drive slow and never spin. Driving in mud I do not get as mud on my truck as you do, thanks to our broader mud guards.
Also I seem to live well with quite a few horsepowers less. Some of my friend use big V8, but I have the feeling that they also break down more often. I have not brocken any think in the drivetrain, or the chassis and steering, of my Defender in nearly three years.

FYI, It's just as easy to put fuel in at half a tank or above as it is when you are about to run out. In reality you guys should fill up every time you're heading back to the yard, that way its always full and ready for the next job. Personally I rarely let my vehicles get below half with the exception of when I'm traveling and know how far it is to the next fuel station and then I'm going to get fuel before it gets down to a quarter of a tank.

Ran out of gas in my parent's '71 Monterey station wagon way back when, 20 feet from the pump. The bad thing was the pump station was uphill from the direction I took. I'd coasted from the street 30 feet up that incline and that was all she had. It was a convenience store not a real gas station and they didn't even sell small gas cans. A few nice people (also without gas cans) tried to help me push it up the incline but if you've ever been close to one of those land barges you know it was a lost cause. The store did let me make a call ( no cell phones! and they didn't have a pay phone) and my pops had to bring the tow chain and pull me up to the pump. That's the only time I've run out of gas (I'm 57 now) ever. I learned my lesson....

Not sure why the audio levels are all over the place, but it takes away from the video. I constantly have to adjust my volume to hear talking, but have to turn it down for music and loud engine parts. This is easy to correct is production by adjusting audio levels to be similar to each other. Otherwise, great video! Thanks for sharing, I really enjoy the content!

Yeah it was worse on this video for some reason. A lot of RUclips channels do this too, so they must have an audio setup that's vastly different from what their audience uses to play the videos. It's really unfortunate.

You might not believe this since you took forever to buy a winch... you need a set of chains from a logging truck that is "V-Bar" on all 4 tires and you can go in the mud like it is pavement. We used to let the air out of the tires, put the chains on so little slack and air up tire and chains are on tight. I have a set on the back of a GMC heavy half and could go places where 4by 4's had problems with out chains.

When I lived in the area, I used to go off roading all the time and the only fear I had was when I came across mud which is a mixture of clay in that area. It sucks up in your tread making the tires look like racing slicks, and your tires lose all their ability to grip even on a flat surface. Just spinning tires not moving and it gets even worse you just can't rinse the vehicle off with a hose, you actually have to physically wash it off or the vehicle looks like crap.

@@notsofast5495 When I lived in the area, we had that red clay that would wash off, but just spraying it with a garden hose never got the stain off, you had to use soap and actually physically wash the clay stain off. Dirt devils were the worst that would get that clay dust all over your vehicle and heavens forbid if you had your windows down. It really made a huge mess in the interior. Living in southern Calif. all I had to do was rinse off the mud that came right off without manual labor involved.

@@notsofast5495 I am just describing the areas I have been, and I don't know anything about the area you are off-roading. It's like Matt has described the sand there which is a lot different than the sand in SoCal, and why vehicles have more problems in that general area compared to sand in other locations. I used to run my family's businesses in that area and I would get a lot of off-road people there and got into trouble because they underestimated the area. I admit I was really lucky and plus when I first moved to that area locals would inform me what to look out for or I might have been on one "Matts" videos.

Question for Matt and crew what do you do with tire pressures in mud like that? Std, lower, or higher? I know lower in sand and rocks, etc. sometimes regular is better in snow so the weight is on a smaller contact patch. Not sure what is best for that type of mud?
