There's a latch on the filter cover plate. Pull up on that, give the plate a short counter clockwise turn, and the cover will come off easy. The latch is at the bottom of the round cover plate below the MAF. It's a bit hard to see but you'll know it when you see it. You can take the plate off without taking the MAF off, but if you do take the MAF off, make sure to be careful not to break the latch that holds the MAF in place. To remove the MAF, place a screwdriver head under the smallest gray part of the latch and gently pull up. While doing this pull the MAF off with the other hand. It'll come off easily. If doesn't come off easily, don't try too hard and break something. Just do it over again. This is an easy 5 minute replacement. Otherwise, this video is spot on and very helpful (except for the creepy music).
Bryan is correct- Once the wiring and hose are disconnected, there is a detent tab on the back of the cover on the firewall side of the cover. The reason it was so hard to twist is because that detent tab locks it in place. If you press the detent button while twisting the cover, it comes off very easily. That also helps align it when putting the cover back on.
This is great thank you! Just a note on oil treated filters like K&N - try and avoid them on modern cars, because the the oil breaks away over time and starts to coat sensitive devices like the the MAF sensor, causing bad readings. They're perfect for carb'd vehicles though.

Help!! I just recently bought a 2016 Certified Pre-Owned A6 Premium Plus Quattro 2.0T -- and am not happy with the fuel efficiency. Suspect air filter (which was SUPPOSED to have been a CPO checkout item) - OR - dirty Mass Air Flow Sensor. So - this video was helpful. So - I loosened the clamp, and removed the hose -- and there is no MAF sensor sitting under there!! Any ideas about my situation? I'll go hunting for the cable to see if maybe someone decided the car can do without the MAF sensor? Jeeepers am very confused at this moment!
am told in the 2016 2.0T, they moved the MAF away from the air box... will go hunting further down 2morro, then... what was the model yr in this video?

"You don't have a Mass Air Flow Sensor on this engine!!" he said. So I said "Well -- was it removed or was the 2016 2.0T TFSI designed without a MAF?" Did not get warm fuzzy's on the answer here...am hoping to get a real answer from Audi Corporate. Are there any 2016 A6 2.0T owners out there that really do have a mass air flow sensor?

When twisting off the cover that you said was very hard, There is a small latch that you pull up and it come off very easily

Jared - is yours a 2016? 2016 model year is critical in my case....
I realize this is old and maybe it will help, but I believe the 2016+ C7 use a MAP (manifold absolute pressure). Not an MAF.
