Man alive! Almost 20 miles in the Smokies. Very impressive day. After doing 13 miles I thought I was going to die. Not sure I could throttle on day after day like you do, but it's fun to watch. Keep on keeping on!
I’ve slept in those shelters when the temperature was way below freezing. One trip, two guys showed up with DuraFlame logs. It helped get the wet wood dried out and we slept toasty warm with the tarp holding in the heat. All shelters on the A.T. which I have stayed have fireplaces in the shelter. I’m enjoying your video skills.
Beautiful video. You are really moving! Thanks for sharing your experiences on the trail. I can't wait until I'm able to give this a shot. Enjoy the journey!
I’ve been watching AT videos since redbeard in 2014, and I really like the fact you show the small things that most hikers don’t include in the videos! Hike on and enjoy yourself out there!
You are doing a great job! One nice thing about the cold is no mosquitos and most bugs and snakes are not out yet. Have a great night stay warm and remember those of us that are not there are routing for you!!!!😊
That ice covered tree was GORGEOUS!!! Can’t believe you got almost 19 miles in before 5. WoW. Stay safe stay warm. Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Glad you had a good time and rest in town. It was a well deserved break! I’m not sure how you are managing in that cold! I did one night at Stone Mountain last week and it got down to 20. I was fine in my layers and sleeping bag inside my tent. But the next morning my hands got cold and numb before I got out of the tent and putting down my tent was hard. My shoes were cold but not frozen like yours were the other day. I thought about you. I was glad I was headed for my van. I don’t know how you can handle the cold for so many days. Be careful! I’m pulling for you. I did from Clingmans Dome to Fontana last August. It is ver
Stay warm. Stay safe. I'm pulling for you. My daughter and I really enjoy and are inspired by your journey. We plan to do the Foothills trail very soon. We were actually hanging out at Table Rock yesterday. What a beautiful place.
So glad to see you back on the trail! Burrr it’s cold. Trees look so pretty frozen. Stay warm and get some sleep. I’m glad you had a good time with your family!! 😊🙏❄️
Magnificent video of the frosted trees! What a wonderful start to the smokies. You are inspiring me to start my hike during the winter to experience the beauty and temperatures. Hike on 🥾 stay warm 🏕
You're kicking butt with the miles! It was great meeting you if only for a brief encounter in the smokies. Wishing you the very best in the days, weeks and months ahead.
In March of 2018 I waited at Fontana for two days for a snowstorm to pass. After heading up the mountain I encountered 6-16" of snow. Your hike was much nicer.
Smokies Day 1done! Curious to know if you’re counting your zero days in your total days on the trail. How are you counting zero days? Thanks! Love watching your videos, keep up the good work:)
Sooo jelly enjoy the trail time The dam and Smokies are awesome Appreciate you sharing some of us are unable to hike for now Be safe...does peppermint really work for gear keeping varmints out
The showers are in the bathroom just uptrail from the Fontana Hilton. The bathrooms are heated and hot water. Heavenly! There are also showers at the visitor center on top of the dam. Not sure if those are open in February. Nothing like a hot shower after smelling bad for days.
Good luck Throttle in your hike in the Smokies. Hope you can connect with PNUT the caretaker at LeConte Lodge. Thank you for your videos, they help me through the day.. Stay warm, be well.
Bears ARE attracted to the smell of mint and peppermint though, so please be careful! I can’t believe you just banged out a 19 mile day by 4 PM. You are so fast!👏🏻👏🏻
Did you know the visitors area at the dam has an awesome shower? Sshhh! That’s top secret! A couple of years ago I popped in just wanting to use the bathroom and I was so surprised! I got chastised in one of the hiking groups that year for spilling the beans. Lol. Also, would peppermint oil not attract bears? 😳
Leave your pack unzipped at night. If critters are attracted to it, they'll find a way in, usually by chewing through the pack (this has happened to me). Since they'll get in anyway, may as well leave the pack open for them. If there's nothing to eat in there, they'll just check it out and then leave with no harm done (okay, maybe they'll leave a few little dry turds, but WTH). Good luck!
good day to you out there in the cold, as my friend used to say, you want to hike follow Hiker on a "Thru Hikers" watch and listen and then stroll thru the "Comments section" theres a lot to learn, take care as you go
Would making a fire in the fire place help warm up the shelter any? Maybe putting some coals in a cooking pot with lid, in your bedding might help keep you warm for at least part of the night?
That’s a genius idea to contain the coals. Just like they did in the Colonial days with the rack under beds that would hold the pans of coals. Modern day hikers put hot water in their bottles and sleep with them in their bag.
@@markcummings6856 once apon a cold camping trip we put big river rocks in the fire and then in our in our sleeping bags. Worked long enough to fall asleep.
Wow the trees looked like winter wonderland and so beautiful. You are crushing those miles. Be careful and safe. God bless and keep on stepping.

Good miles again. That is a nice shelter taped in and the fire place.🌲👍

You are doing great on your hike. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. Happy trails.
I love your videos; I been following your journey from the beginning. Thank you for sharing it with us!!!!!
Enjoying your videos. Stay warm.
Early spring it still gets cold at night many times. If I was out there I'd be having something HOT to drink. ☺️💟👍
How magical to be in the Smoky Mountains already! Enjoy them, you'll be finished with them before you know it.
Whenever I see that view of the damn I can’t help but think of Harrison taking his dive to escape marshall Sam LOL!
Nice scenery! Stay warm.

Wow, that frozen fog was cool! No pun intended
Killing it!
Good idea to double up your sleeping bag. It’s cold out there! I’m enjoying your videos, thank you!

pretty frost. Wow, great milage. Brrrrrr.
You're doing good. How many other thru hikers do you see in a day?
Day thirteen, cool beans!🐿

No desire to build a rip roaring fire in that awesome fireplace? Probably really tired after super fast hike! You are moving quick, awesome work! =)
Wow! Long miles today! Way to go!! R there shelters all along the AT? I have only done part of the CDT and there r none lol!!
Yes, around 140!

Best I can gather from her starting date of 2/3 or sooner, this must be hiking days.
Beautiful ice. I hope you find someone to hike with, for some reason the smokies look intimidating in your video

Why doesn't anybody start a fire , I'm pretty sure I would
I'm guessing too tired and cold. Hop in bag and get warm, sleep. I agree tho, I would want a fire too.
I would have to agree, but I still have to start one occasionally when it’s been really cold. But 15-20 miles of hiking is tough.
I think you’re only a day behind Jay Wanders.
Would making a fire in the fire place help warm up the shelter any? Maybe putting some coals in a cooking pot with lid, in your bedding might help keep you warm for at least part of the night?
It takes a ton of wood to generate enough heat to help. As soon as the fire dies, the heat goes away almost instantly.
@@dougd.8925 Caution: river rocks in a fire are fine until they shatter... sometimes with damaging results. YMMV
@@richardhatch1346 oh snap. I had no idea. Probably not going to do that again. Thanks bro
Just keep putting 1 foot in front of the other and you will be out of the Smokies before you know it.
Nice shelter, hope you were able to start a fire!
