Great video and series, thanks for the tips! This is what primes do with you as a photographer. I fell in love with my 16mm Sigma on APCS (24mm equivalent) over the last month. You have to work the frame, especially the background and perspective. What I learned about it is that you really put this intimate feeling to your shot when being close to your subject in portraiture. Shooting close to your subject in contrast to stepping back with a usual normal or portrait lens directly translates into the look and feeling of the photo. Great for indoors and kids, too.

I'm not a fan of FL's shorter than 50mm (FF) for people only, although they seem popular now. I think it looks like a cell selfie. I do like them (and I've got the 17-40 and the 24-70) for placing people in an environment and as you noted, I'm not afraid of a bit of distortion as it can play into the image. I've used them since film (usually a 24/28mm or 35mm prime in 24x36 or 65mm for 6x7, 90mm for 4x5) for landscape. The lens perspective is just a tool to capture an image. Visualize what you want and grab the right tool for the job.
