This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

When I was a student I played a game of chess with a roommate (we were both garbage), when another roommate came in - who was an actual GM - he analyzed the position for 2 seconds when he asked: „ Wouw, is this an actual position or did you guys just threw some chessmen randomly upon the board?"

Yall not ready to hear this but agadmator is the reason behind the world giving chess any attention right now he was the only person passionate enough to tell us all stories about masters about feelings about history about chess transcendence. How many of us all rediscovered chess thanks to Antonio how many of us built communities friendships around it how many of us looked back at ourselves and undertood ourselves better because of his efforts. I think a lot of us. I am really grateful Antonio for all that you did to us and I believe your passion reached far and beyond I think if you weren’t attracting audiences new people to chess there wouldn’t have the queens gambit series there wouldn’t be the same growth for other youtube channels if I saw hikaru streaming before this channel I would’ve hated chess the competitive sport I love chess the art

Nice to be back to another Morphy game. By the way are you referring to David Lawson's book the pride and sorrow of chess

He did not discover it as it was played before his lifetime, but he played it for much of his life and due to his success the opening was named after him

I know it would be a short review, but on February 3rd 2021 it will be the 35th aniversery of pixar's creation, and for that day it might be worth considering doing a video analyizing geri's game, from the geri's game short.

It would be cool if you started including the age of the players in these older games in every video. If you didn't mention that Bird was 29, I would've automatically thought he was an old man because of the pic.
