    This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
    The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
    While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
    But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

    I think Morphy was counting on Lowenthal eventually blundering (based on the previous games) and so he didn't take enough thought to defense. But Lowenthal played flawlessly -- nothing brilliant but always the move avoiding traps. Bravo, I didn't think Lowenthal had it in him (and obviously neither did Morphy).

    This easily makes the list of Morphy's worst games. Lowenthal's "see saw" pressure of the black king on the 7th and 8th ranks could have been continued a little longer before capturing the running pawn. Morphy's troubles begin with 18...Nxf6. This retreat capture is very un-Morphy where 18...Qxf6, looks obvious and natural. The only thing that makes sense for this choice is that Morphy wanted to keep that once removed attack on the pawn after white's king bishop was captured. All in all, opening theory of the day contributed to Morphy's defeat here. 8... Be6 is not followed up properly. Nb4 has to be played before castling or else white siezes strength along the a2-g8 diagonal. As we saw in the game.

    At 13:25 Lowenthal could have forced a queen trade with Qd3+, but it works out the same anyway. It isn't always a good idea to trade down when up material, but this is one of the usual cases when it is indeed advantageous to do so.

    1️⃣Arranged position will be white to play.

    Notice that usually when morphy loses a game is in above 60 moves. Rarely in 20. He seldom blundered while the others made mistakes or impreciosions way more often, even when they emerged from the opening in better positions. His defense here although impossible was always persistent and very obstinate. Hence 70+ moves.

    Suggestion: where it says "Start the Morphy Saga here", have that link to the entire playlist, not just the first video in the saga. Which, of course, is this link:

    Only Morphy can let his opponent up the pawn and the exchange by sacrificing rook for his Knight. Legend🙏

    6:00 Wouldn't it result in a checkmate (or at least a free rook) if the queen would have just taken the rook on E8

    • @jonnyhirse5949
      @jonnyhirse5949 3 года назад +1

      Yes, it would result in checkmate, but for the wrong side

    • @lukasg4807

      Black would just ignore it, Qxf2, then Qxh2 checkmate

    • @beaconite4249
      @beaconite4249 3 года назад

      I looked at that too but black doesn’t cooperate by taking the queen. He just plays Qf2+ followed by Qh2#

      If white moves the queen away from defending the pawn on f2, black plays Qf2 check and then Qh2 checkmate

    Seems like morphy was totally outplayed here. Also seems like he’s been getting out played until someone makes a mistake and is able to capitalize on that mistakes instead of totally being dominant.
