He openly admits to not knowing how to read music. He just listens to the song, breaks it down, and puts his own spin on it. It’s the equivalent of writing Shakespearean plays and not knowing how to read. The dude is absolutely insane with his skills. Blows my mind.

IMO he sounds too much like a drum-machine than a human and missing dynamics/accents, but maybe his new Jazz-band is teaching him that. I prefer Sebastian Lanser and doesn't seem any slower or less complex if you listen to "Ten Sepiroth" for example.

@@neilberry1552 What's so funny? A great drummer needs to master at least three different stroke dynamics: strong, medium, soft. I only get one or two with this guy. I also listen to Death Metal and if the drummer sounds to robotic and there are no softer melodic parts, I don't like the music. Drummers like Lanser or for example from Beyond Creation, First Fragment can sound like Jazz-drummers as well. And apart from Death Metal I definitely prefer a Carter Beauford to Estepario, who is IMO the king of dynamic percussive drumming.

Why is he so good? Honestly? A WHOLE LOT of practcing time.
And by practicing time I mean countless hours on the drums, listening to all sorts of stuff, body exercises and on top of that he recently quit somking and drinking.

Love what you said. He is a true musician. Many times, he’s shown that he knows the songs. He listens and tries to appreciate the lyrics.
But his heart performances is simply a technique showcase.
He tunes the drums and selects cymbals so they don’t resonate. This way you can hear every little hit. He’s just showing what’s possible

  • @blazemonger1

His #1 skill is .. putting in the work.. He is very clear about that and has made several videos about it. He does what he does because he puts in hours and hours for years to get where he is. And he is convinced that anyone who puts in the time can get good.. That may be a bit optimistic, but he is also not totally wrong.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums True. When he says talent does not exist, I expect he means talent is not a "switch" or a magic pill, it's more a catalyst, You stil have to put in the work but if you have the talent, the results tend to come faster.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums, and if you HAVE put in that work and you still suck??? Maybe you're not a musician? You HAVE to have talent. The work grows that talent like a planted seed. No seed, water all you want and all you've got is mud. If you've got the seed and don't water, (work), it, now all you've got is a dried up seed buried in the dirt. It takes ridiculous work for countless hours to grow that talent. You have to have the work and talent, period.

I saw a video that he made I guess recently where he was talking about how we going to start filming all the practice that goes into each of the things he presents so we can see that it takes work to reach that finished product. He's not afraid to show that even the best have to work hard at it, practice it over and over, make mistakes, and see that the final performance is just the tip of the iceberg. I remember seeing an actor/dancer can't think of who, saying they got to watch Fred Astaire rehearse, make mistakes, get frustrated, work thru the parts. And we just get to see the gravy, just cause they make it look easy doesn't mean that it is.

5:30 he explains the single pedal/double pedal activation switch on the right side of [just the one] right pedal. He isn't using a slave drive and traditional double pedal single stroke technique here... he is using a custom pedal that provides a single stroke hit upon the lift of the right foot and another hit on the expected press of the pedal... with an activation switch hit for when he wants it to be just a single stroke pedal again (something I thought of in the 90's). Really cool stuff!

Fun fact about the original beat in Stayin Alive: It was one of the very first No. 1 hits which used a drum loop - the session drummer only did one session, fell ill and wasn't available for a followup session so the producers went with a 8 bar loop he recorded for the demo that everyone liked. That explains why there are no fills or variation at all when you listen to the whole song.

He does something super technical in the song that took me a few times watching it to catch it because I’m usually just closing my eyes and meditating to drum gods while he plays. 😅 I’m sure you would catch it the first time he does it. Every reaction video for the cover I’ve watched so far (10 and counting) has failed to mention this sweet technical move that he does in .25 seconds. Usually they’re blown away by his speed and chops. I really think you would enjoy it.

Hi Andrew! Love the channel. Have you reacted to Dylan Elise before? He's good..on Siberianos level I'd say. Both unreal drummers.

ruclips.net/video/ScwU6ALc1hY/видео.html He just recently left this band. You are correct regarding personal choice. A guy like him just doesn't fit into the traditional album/tour mold.

Hey Andrew, can I request that you do a reaction video to Dariusz "Daray" Brzozowski | Dimmu Borgir - "Kings Of The Carnival Creation" | Drum Playthrough? He's not the original Dimmu Borgir drummer but he has such great groove, precision and the fills are so smooth. Lots of good heavy stuff in there too! \m/
