      Well looking at history it'll be reliable, but not fuel efficient. Matter of fact itll be getting about half the mileage the 6.7 powerstroke does

      The 2020 7.3 is a gas motor and it doesn't make too much more hp or tq than the previous 6.2. You could probably get a pretty good idea of the trucks' capability by looking at a 2015 F250/350. I don't really understand why someone would opt for such a large gas motor instead of a diesel. A neighbor had a 6.2 in a 250 and he towed ~40' 5th wheel with it and it didn't do bad but not great, terrible gas mileage while towing. My in laws have 2017 350 diesel that they tow a similar 5th with and they had no problems towing through Colorado and Wyoming and got better fuel mileage. Neighbor down the street now has a diesel 350 dually.

      @@stevenf6885 because new diesels are more expensive and have a ton of garbage emissions systems that fail. And the gas engine is more than capable. It's not like you're getting 40mpg with the diesel. Not worth the headache.

      @Mr Anonymous how much do you tow with it? Every tune truck that I've ever driven unless it's been a dedicated truck built for extreme durability (tractor pull daily driver) has entered limp home mode after about 5 to 10 minutes at full throttle with a 15k load on the back.

    • @KoolCordell
      @KoolCordell 4 года назад

      @Warren ya was a buddies 6.0. towed up what become the Ike gauntlet. Was hauling a connex that they decided to loadup. Literally a brick wall.
      he had his gauges in his gauge pod set up to flash red when it was within 25% of the danger zone and then turn full red at 10% to danger zone. Nothing ever flashed just a sudden limp condition, I would assume fuel, but the pressure never dropped. it was a 6.0 so it's not really the best comparison but I've had similar problems when towing with Duramax is as well.
      One of my friends has a Cummins I think a 3rd gen ram he is always tweaking it. He build with the philosophy of fast but durable. He regularly does sled pulls with it off roads it and tows with it. He had them Dyno tune it airing on the side of reliability. Was pushing 50psi up the Ike the whole way, then the trans lost some sort of signal shifted up and then immediately back down while under full boost. Made it all the way to Kansas like that with the trailer drop the trailer made it to Tennessee. he actually thanked me for finding the weak link then threw a firepunk transmission in it and hasn't looked back since.
      truly an apples-to-oranges comparison though his ram easily has 40k underneath that hood.
      My stock 8.1 didn't have a problem at 20kGCW up Ike. Held 45mph like a champ. (Oversized tires on stock gearing kept pulling her out of her torque band in 2nd once it really started to climb.)

    • @KoolCordell
      @KoolCordell 4 года назад

      @Mr Anonymous yeah I have no problem at all with diesel trucks but my biggest problem is when somebody goes out and throws a 200 or 350 horse tune on it and then tries to tow. if your only concern was performance when towing you have to do all of the supporting modifications and then you can try to run a hot tune.
      As financially irresponsible as it would be I love my 8.1 gasser. I keep reminding myself I don't need a raylar 540ci stage 1 for $13k.....but 575hp 640LB-FT sounds so delicious.
      I was previously seriously considering it but my limitations going to be my gcwr which I've done with this truck and it did just fine. So it's hard to rationalize the additional performance.

    Always best to run the transmission in 1-1 on a chassis dyno, but since the 2019 6 speed didn't have 1-1 they ran it in 5th at .85-1, makes sense. Since the test goal was to compare 2019 truck performance to 2020 truck performance it would have been interesting to do a second set of runs on the 2020 in 8th gear (also .85-1) to see if that dropped the HP. Like others are saying the 2020 in 1-1 should probably be corrected with a lower loss factor (10-15%), but the 2019 in .85-1 may be more like 15-20%. That 10 speed will also help improve performance on the road over the 6 speed, locking up the torque converter earlier and keeping the engine higher on the HP curve.

    • @KoolCordell

    I just find it humorous reading some of the comments. Andrew and the guys are doing a great job. We who are over 40 and 50 can remember that back in the day....not long ago in the 70s and 80s and most the 90s, we bought trucks 1500s, f150s, 3/4 tons, most all had a has motor, we didnt have tow ratings like today, didn't have the over hyped stickersnon the door etc. Etc. We hooked up whatever cattle trailer or camper we had or wanted and we pulled on down the road. No computer to remind us what bad gas mileage we were getting, no man ever telling you at the gas station that you shouldnt be pulling any certain rig unless he saw your front tires off the ground lol. We have become a society of numbers junkies. I bought an f150 crew with the 5.0 in 2015. I have 98000 miles on it now. I pull a 16 foot enclosed trailer EVERY day that weighs 9000 to 11000 pounds depending on the day and I pull a 29' camper every other weekend 120 miles. Have hauled diesel 1 tons in a flatbed and pull an equipment trailer with a 8000 pound bobcat a few times a week about 60 to 80 miles. That's normal and its something up until the past 5 or 10 years that was normal for most working men. I've done the same exact weekly run for 30 years with 1500s, 6.5 non turbo 2500s, 7.3 f250 and tk be honest the f150 5.0 does it better than any ever did and I dont hesitate to actually work my truck. When it comes to having to have the latest and greatest I think some take it too far. Use common sense. Stay in budget. Work the truck.

    • @Matt-mh5ud
      @Matt-mh5ud 4 года назад +3

      @@wrifraff Doesn't mean something is wrong, also doesn't guarantee it's correct though. Manufacturers almost always rate conservatively due to litigation. In a world where mass manufacturing cannot yield the exact same product every time, factory numbers are more of a validation that even the poorest performer within a lot will not produce less than the claim. These are also not naturally aspirated, exhaust forced induction is a massive variable; especially with large boost levels.

    • @DeltaSierra426
      @DeltaSierra426 4 года назад +2

      @@wrifraff Matt is right. This is best-case scenario numbers. Modern engines will detune somewhat when they get very hot, e.g. pulling 25 lbs. up a steep grade for a long time at wide-open throttle. More over, they admitted it was a cool morning... very high-temp dry air will decrease power as well as less thick air is able to be stuffed in the cylinders.
      There was a time when Ford was a bit over-optimistic on their ratings whereas Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth was known for being conservative. I'm glad to see Ford doing it this way instead.

On my 2017 6.7 F-350, backing uphill, with even a modest weight trailer, loads up on the torque converter. It shouldn't do that. On the 6 speed, reverse is 3.128. This is impractically tall, being halfway between 1st and 2nd gear ratios. For the 10 speed, reverse is 4.69. That is a very welcome FIFTY PERCENT REDUCTION!

    I saw an interview with a Ford executive (which I’m now looking for) where it was stated that they had reduced parasitic loss on the trucks down to about 14%. These trucks are still over clocking, but it is what I had heard in the interview. I suspect this to be especially true for the 10 speed. With 10 gears to spread the power over, it is reasonable to believe they are able to tighten up the transmission.

      A 2002 Superduty F-250 CC 4x4 SB PSD A/T, a very common configuration, had a starting price of $37,575 before other options. Adjusted for inflation (Jan-2002), that's $54,571.38. A comparable F-250 would start at $56,270 before options. That's slightly more money, but not slightly more truck. The new truck is bigger, far more capable, comes with more standard features, it complies with stricter emissions and safety rules, that on top of other things. You are certainly getting far more for your dollar now.

      Don't forget a little factor called "reliability". My '01 7.3 will still be going clickity clack while these new ones are in the shop. Sure the new one's put out amazing power, but there's always another side to that coin. Especially since their fuel/exhaust systems have become so complicated and finicky. Diesel fuel isn't exactly forgiving.

      @@douglasullman9777 Even with the emissions systems, the new 6.7 PSD is actually pretty reliable. As long as you maintain them and drive them right, you really shouldn't expect many issues with them. Also, the 7.3 was legendary, but it's without its own faults, and it certainly won't last forever without needing a few trips to the shop. Between the 6.7 and the 7.3, maintenance and care is more critical than anything else. Don't let the emissions system complexity and cost scare you away from a new one.

The 2020 was noticable more quiet and more powerful. The 2019 still has vibration that can be felt in the steering wheel. The 2020 has a lot less vibration and drives smooth, powerful and quiet. 80mph the tack was at 2,000RPM. Also 80mph felt like 60mph. The truck is incredible.

So there is apparently an 8% torque loss through the driveline. That would put the max power at the crank at about 514 hp. Who needs a tuning shop with numbers like that?
