I could listen to that engine accelerating on the highway all day
Tom Coppa so would Chevy, but they would be too far behind to hear it!
@@JeepCherokeeful LMAO 😂
I can’t wait for them to straight pipe their long term 7.3L and get a tune. Ford held back a lot of potential power for the year 1 launch
I am certainly not one for loud exhausts, but this one has a very nice soothing sound pulling up that mountain. Much nicer than the 3.5 EB with it's raspy exhaust note @ 3500. I like it better than the 6.7 with a Twister on it.
Fords answer to the V10 a**hole has guzzler engine haha. Need to take the v10 and do a test against the new one. Pleaseeeeeee
If this 7.3 Is performing this well at 11000 Feet, Imagine its performance at Sea level to 3000ish feet where 99% of its user Will be operating. What a Beast. A great Alternative to a Diesel. Well done Ford.
Could be they have enough displacement to make up for the thinner air.
I agree
Yup that's why I'm getting it for florida
Or if you twin-turbo it so you can get even better performance at sea level and retain that much performance all the way to 20000 feet.
@@electric7487 and empty your gas tank in 60% the distance
I don't know why everyone's so surprised that the 7.3L did so good, It makes 400lb/ft of torque at 1500 RPM which is basically just off idle, and Ford seems to always tune their transmissions to take advantage of the engines power when towing (unlike GM and Ram...Especially Ram) and that goes without mention that it has 10 gears to rifle between and keep the engine right where it needs to be in any given situation. I think its funny, when the numbers for the 7.3L were released everyone was like ''that's it?'' but I knew as soon as I started seeing dyno tests of the engines that they were gonna be amazing H.D truck engines, everyone gets so wrapped up in peak output but the real story is told on the dyno chart and then eventually on the road. Glad to see the triumphant return of the big block Ford V8!
Nathan McDonald
I was going to type the exact same thing. Going through the comments I don’t see any of the crying and fanboyism that came before...haha
Yup, it’s all about that Torque curve!! Also, what those people who were crying about the numbers don’t realize is that the numbers on this new Gas 7.3 are very similar to the numbers on the old Diesel 7.3 PS, in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. And those diesels were mated to a lowly 4R100 transmission.
@@DanMar5858 Yeah, this new 7.3L gas makes almost twice the horsepower and just a 30 or so lb/ft of torque less than the old 7.3L diesel as well as 10 forward gears. This truck would honestly blow any stock 7.3L diesel off the road towing or unloaded.
@@zorans5200 You realize that before diesels, people used big block gas V8's for heavy towing right? They may not have made quiet the torque of a turbo diesel, but they got the job done and ran for hundreds of thousands of miles. The concept of using a gas engine for heavy towing is nothing new. Aside from that, modern diesels are arguable less reliable than comparable gas engines because of the emission's` equipment they are required to have.
@@zorans5200 Look dude, I get that you're a fan of diesels, but I'm not about to get into some pissing match with a complete stranger about who's truck pulls better, All that crap you spit about the emission's systems sounds like pure propaganda and I in no way attacked diesel engines and said this engine was going to put the diesel industry outta business, the only thing I did was make a general comparison to the old 7.3L Powerstroke. The way you structured your comment leads me to believe that you're insecure in your masculinity and use your truck as a method of proving yourself, Not trying to insult, but I feel the need to inform you how you're coming off.
Now with that said, Stock for stock, I would put a paycheck down that this 7.3L GAS powered F-250 would drag the same trailer up this same hill faster than your old Duramax, the 7.3L has WAY more horsepower and even though its down on torque compared to a first gen DMax the 10-Speed transmission is FAR superior to what your truck has and the 7.3L is close enough in its torque rating that the extra gearing would put it ahead in my opinion.
Lastly, on the topic of diesels lasting longer, sure....20 years ago. Gas engines have advanced A LOT in the past twenty years and diesels have only become more and more burdened with emission control equipment (I know I know its a conspiracy to undermine the sale of diesel engines yada yada), but its not uncommon at all to see gas engines these days far outlast the trucks they are put in (Much like diesels used to be), then you pair that with the cheaper buy in price and cheaper cost of ownership and engines like this 7.3L are perfect for the vast majority of people that use these trucks.
P.S - An Ecoboost 3.5L V6 F-150 makes almost the same torque as your Duramax and nearly 100hp more. Diesels had their time in the spot light, but now the market is shifting back towards gasoline because of the cost and complexity to engineer modern emission compliant diesel engines and the next major shift will probably be when electrics start to become more mainstream.
Have a good one.
I'm a chevy dude, but gotta admit it. Ford really did their home work on every application for their trucks. Kudos to them and you all for freezing while filming these things.
David Lusk I Eilish Chevy would have kept improving the 8.1L which was a great HD engine. I’m 100% Ford but I admired Chevy for Offering that big V8.
@@nmotionproductions29 love my 8.1 330k miles runs like day 1 loves gas too but i really like this 7.3 i feel like it will have similar characteristics but an updated version
mike T I have an 8.1 also. Any tricks for getting rid of the oil burning?
Ford with a 4:30 10spd vs Chevy with a 3:73 6spd. Even my 6.0 has 4:10s. Chev test was 3 months ago. I call for a head to head rematch with Chevs max towing option.
unimogdave 4.30, not 4:30. Very different ratios.
The fact that this engine has simple port injection makes it that much better!
I agree. I would actually pay serious money for my Lexus to be port injection. Direct comes with plenty of flaes
Flaws
There isn't MUCH to be gained from direct injection in the non-turbo realm. The 6.2 Ford motor was also non-direct injection.
@David Pate port was the best design in my opinion. I hated the old 5.7 spider injectors of Chevy a pain to replace compared to the Ford 5.4.
@Reality Lives will that do anything bad to the car? I mean is there any danger in doing it. ( I'm not mechanically inclined)
Earlier this year, TFL ran up the IKE with a 2020 Duramax with the new 10 speed and a HO Cummins with the AISIN. These trucks had times of 8:24 & 8:25 respectively. The fact that this 7.3 gasser cruised up the mountain less than 20 seconds slower towing the exact same 16,000 pound trailer is remarkable. This engine is stout. Kudos Ford.
The 7.3L will be enough for most people. It’ll also be cheaper to maintain in the long run without all of the stupid complex anti pollution systems on the diesels
I agree, I originally wanted to get the diesel, but after talking with some diesel tuning shops about a DEF delete, prices were as high as several thousand dollars just to remove the pollution system. Looks like I will be getting the 7.3 engine now.
@mtrujillo1973 I would love to get the diesel engine, but I will not drive one with all the emissions systems, like DPF and DEF and deleting those things cost thousands of dollars and not to mention voiding the factory warranty. On top of that the diesel engine option is ~10K price increase over the base gas engine so with the trim level and options that I want, the diesel engine, and the emissions delete, It will cost me over $80K.
The emissions systems are fine. Any cons are wayyyy overblown. I’ve been driving a diesel for years and never deleted and it’s just fine.
Yep 6.7 is a beast but they have some problems. Hopefully the 7.3 will be more reliable. I got out of diesels a few years back. I like the power of the 6.7 but don't wanna spend 11 grand soon as the warranty expires like my buddy just did. I'll probably just go with the 7.3 for peace of mind and off road abilities
@mtrujillo1973 I'm not particularly scared of owning a diesel, but my wallet is terrified.
Coming from a lifetime GM owner I LOVE what ford did with this 7.3 super duty!
Same here. I am a gm guy but appreciate simple good power.
I'm still shocked they built a pushrod engine.
agreed. Be interesting to see how GM responds
@@gcragg11 GM likely won't IMO at least not with another engine. A 10 speed would be really nice with that new 6.6L gas they have. I have a hard time buying a 6 speed HD gas truck in 2020 when Ram has the 6.4L with 8 speed now and Ford has this new optional 7.3L and 10 speed. I would buy a 6.6L gas 2500 if it had the 10 speed. Otherwise I am going to have to buy Ford or Ram for HD gas. Just how I feel about it.
This is finally something to replace my 8.1/Allison truck.
Some of us tow heavy enough to want a big block, not enough to justify or want to deal with a diesel.
Yes sir
Gonna be honest diesels are great but stupid emissions chokes the shit out of them just making them unreliable. This gas 7.3 old fashioned stroker is great. Nice job ford!
@@mouaxiong8618 There are ways around that problem.
@@ajs96350 deleting emission systems are illegal in many states so no.
@@mouaxiong8618 Yeah, well, they aren't offering to pay for the repairs caused by the systems, so they can suck it.
Purchased my 7.3 A little over a week ago and I love it. 17.1 MPG at 65mph with 3.73 gears CC SB LARIAT
Not bad at all. My 6.7 diesel gets about 18 at that speed empty with 3:73 gears. Just think, you saved a ton of money out the gate for going gas engine, cheaper maintenance, and cheaper to fill up. I think a 7.3 is in my future.
Congrats. I'm getting 18 freeway empty on my 2012 V8 6.2 crew cab XLT.
16 mpg freeway with about 2000lbs in the bed.
Overall 13.5-15 mpg combined hand calculated at the pump.
Now if it only rode like a Lexus. Talk about a harsh ride.🥺
chriseast030691 any towing yet with it??
Good gear choice, 373 are perfect, you have a f350 I take it.
I just got my f350 it has 4.30s! At 14.2 but it just flipped 200 miles
The Ford 7.3 is going to be a fine motor. The mudders are going to love it. The high teir draggers are going to appreciate it.
And it's going to drive a more competitive market so it's better for all of us.
Thank you tfl for the video.
It’s the smartest thing Ford has done in the truck market in years. I see a boosted variant coming from them in a year or two...I also think that their current power rating are very conservative.
@@prevost8686 they aren't going to boost it. But the aftermarket crew will for sure
I wonder how this engine would do in a tractor pull rig? Probably be a beast
Squishysforbreakfast interesting RUclips handle. You must have played WoW or some other MMO and love killing mages and what not. 😂
Oh its gonna be so fun when someone drops this motor in a Mustang. You know its gonna happen be a beast.
WOW that was a quick run up the mountain! This 7.3 gas engine is going to give the diesel market some serious competition.
Not quite. The weights are different.
Not quite Diesels are better for towing because of the the amount of torque you get at low rpms and compared to there gas counterparts the mpgs are way better and are know to last longer but yes these gasser is great for that family who tows something once a month
Right Wing Environmentalist it would be interesting to see a comparison run with this trailer and the new 6.7 turbodiesel.
Hi have a nice day This engine is ready for more than that. Really just depends what you’re towing, how far and what terrain you frequent. Clearly the 7.3L had no issues with 16K going up IKE so if your 16K or so in trailer weight the 7.3L is up for the job in my eyes. $8K less than diesel, lower maintenance, simpler design and cheaper fuel all ease the mpg difference. Not to mention gas engines are a better experience in cold weather IMO. This gas engine is the ticket in my eyes unless you regularly have 20K+ in trailer weight.
@Right Wing Environmentalist they did the math in another video. If you tow a lot the diesel will pay off in 116k miles, 620k miles if you don't tow.
This performance run up the mountain shows just how much Ford nailed it with this Godzilla. I would like to see TFL make the run with the 6.2 to see what a difference, but amazing to see this kind of capability. Sounds damn good too.
June Han
I agree with you. I wish the TFL guys would test a 2020 F-350 crew cab single rear wheel with a 6.2l v8 with the 10 speed transmission.
I don't think the 6.2L can be equipped in a way that its rated to tow 17K pounds though. They would have to use a lighter trailer with 7.3L and compare the results to the 6.2L, but as good as the 7.3L did here, I doubt it would have any issue beating a 6.2L in any towing matchup, all things equal.
Nathan
I looked online and it seem like the F-350 with 6.2L 4:30 gears can do a max of 15,000lbs.
@@michaelgonzalez4863 Yes but this trailer is closer to 17,000lbs, even though im sure a 6.2L could pull it on some level, TFLT won't ever test a 6.2L with this trailer because it would be overloaded and thus illegal to drive on public roads.
Nathan
You are right. My work truck is a 18 F-250 with the 6.2. It has good torque but I think that transmission holds its potential back. I also have a 18 F-150 2.7tt with the 10 speed and it makes such a huge difference. I would just like to see what it can do with the 10 speed.
That 7.3 really is the Godzilla in it's class! What a sweet rig!
I've been waiting for this video my whole life
I'm blown away by the 8:42 run 😳
vs 11:53 :D
Very close to diesel in competition. Very impressive and I knew Chevy is trash
travis10ist the diesels tow 30k not 17k
@@reddevilxt716 ruclips.net/video/KJfHvfismu4/видео.html...enjoy
FINALLY a Godzilla towing test! Thank you and very interesting results! Impressive for 16,000# trailer.
It’s been a year and I’d like to say, thank you this video is what made me select 7.3 when I ordered my f350. I have ran diesel since 1996 because they out preformed the gas motors by 10x for towing and power. With 27k on the clock of my 2020 that I got in late 2019 it’s been great never felt like I needed more power. I tow a 40ft 3 axle tow hauler 5th wheel and a 40ft gooseneck equipment trailer regularly. It’s rare to have my truck trailerless. If anyone is on the fence of saving 10k and getting a 7.3 do it you will not regret it
What was the average mpg?
I want a diesel, but I am NOT going to buy one because of the emission systems. My choice will be the 7.3 gas engine in a SRW F350 w/ ext. cab. Thank you Ford for the 7.3 !
The emission systems have been around for more than 15 years and gasoline engines are not that far behind as the laws get more strict. If you tow and you want to save money, you need a diesel.
Gas emissions equipment isn't near as bad. Gas catalytic converters and egr doesn't clog up like diesels does and cause a loss of power and mpg. It has gotten better but still not perfect, still need DEF and regens. Not to mention the added cost of diesel fuel, oil changes, parts and initial cost. This was never a diesel replacement but it can be to a lot of buyers.
Also, if you want SRW, might as well get an F250, with an F350 you might as well get a dually.
I disagree with the blanket statement about the 250 in the SRW instead of the 350. It depends entirely on their payload needs.
My personal needs require a lot more payload than a 250 has but I don’t want all the extra width of a dually. The difference between the payloads of a 250, 350 SRW and 350 DRW are significant.
@tha idealist Well..... you could do a dpf and scr delete but I would NEVER suggest it because that's ILLEGAL 😉
@@chriswilson433 The F350 has different rear spring spacers, or blocks, to allow more axle travel for more weight. It's rated higher because of that but an F250 can haul the same weight, but you run the risk of bottoming out.
You can get a SRW F350 and haul more weight but it's going to eat rear tires. We had SRW trucks at work and when you're hauling 2k lbs or more daily, you'll go through tires in about 6 months, give or take depending on miles. You'll get about twice that from a dually, and tires aren't cheap. Dually tires being smaller cost less so you'll save on tire cost, and they're more stable at load capacity.
I'm sold, this thing would yank a 5th wheel camper around easily if it can handle Ike like this. A big well equipped 5th wheel is like 13,000lbs dry.
The Ike tests used to give a good feel for how the truck handled the load, hearing the engine strain, noting shift patterns and hearing the guys respond to how the truck was doing.
Now its 90% reviewing specs that everyone watching already knows and a trailer commercial.🤔
Yeah i noticed that this video, i wanted to hear her roar!
In college I used to use a Ford F250 4x4 with a big 460 and a 4-speed to haul wood out of the mountains. What a beast that thing was! Wish Ford would put a manual in their Tremor!
Sadly the days of the manual are coming to an end, the only cars that even offer them anymore are really cheap economy cars to save on asking price and sports cars because there's still people who would riot if they couldn't get their Mustang, Camaro or Challanger with a manual.
@@nathanmcdonald610 The new Mustangs have a pile of shit Getrag manual transmission in them, it'll spell disaster for the rest of their manual transmission vehicles and the #1 reason they went with them is to say well they have so many problems & bad drivers that they're no longer going to offer a manual at all. Those Getrag transmissions are pure garbage, the 5 speed I had in my Chevy Cobalt was a problem from day 1 and it never got any better to the point of having to have a transmission rebuild at 15k miles, yes only 15,000 miles to the rebuild, and that car was driven on the highway daily so it wasn't like it was stressed by driving in city traffic which any good manual transmission could easily handle for many years...sadly I traded in an 89 Mazda B2600i 4x4 pickup with a 5 speed that had 319k on it for that pile of trash car...wish I'd kept my truck it was far more reliable than that new car ever was, and I had the original clutch replaced at 230k mainly due to a pilot bearing and slave cylinder failure, so I had it all replaced at once while it was apart. The mechanic said it still had a lot of friction material left so it would have gone for many more years..oh well its gone now :(.
When it comes to gooseneck/fifth wheel towing, 15% - 20% of the trailer weight is transferred to the truck (pin weight). That truck was pretty much maxed out, roughly 2400 lbs. at the ball depends on how TFL loaded the trailer and truck. 4 inches of squat for a 3/4 ton is not bad for a maxed out payload on the truck. Would've liked to see the actual run up the Ike like other previous videos produced in past. Why the short Ike run with filler cramp between the run?
Thanks guys! I was turned off the Chevy after the Ike test and my focus was put on the Ford 7.3 with 4.30 gears. I have a 4000lb truckcamper and 35ft 5th wheel so F350 dually with 7.3 and 4.30 gears is in order. I live in Alberta Canada and always go back and forth to BC. Mountains everywhere. Thanks again!
Why not 6.7 powerstroke? With better fuel economy?
I was stunned the Chevy was ~30% slower, that’s remarkable.
@@thestig8768 the powerstroke has a lower payload capacity than the 7.3 because it's heavier. Payload is more important for slide in camper.
You also have to consider his driving environment. Alberta Canada gets mighty cold in the winter. Cold starts and fuel gelling with diesels is a headache no one wants, not to mention DEF. I understand there are ways around this with cold weather add-ons, but why not keep it simple.
@@johndallas2409 I live in middle saskatchewan I owned my share of diesels and I had a slide in truck camper, its like a sail in the wind I'd prefer the fuel mileage for towing and hauling especially long trips
I'm in love with this 😍 7.3 Ford powered. I own a Ford 6.2 Ford powered love my truck. Can't wait to drive the new 7.3
The engine looks small because it is. The 7.3 is about 1.5” narrower than the 5.0 coyote because it’s not an OHC and it’s only about 2” longer. It’s not a big block, it’s actually a small block and it’s already been swapped into a fox body
Where is it In a Fox Body???
Yes. I just found that out. Not a Big Block, So that Motor is Going To Sing at High Rpm. I want one . The Engine, i think my iroc would Be Perfect
What is the bore spacing and deck height? What is the bore and stroke? It's an iron block right? I bet it's closer too an FE or a 351m/400 block than a Windsor in size and larger than GMs block. I'd call it a medium block or a big block before I'd call it an SBF.
The 7.3 with the 4.30 gears and the 10 speed transmission is a winning combo.
I'll stick with my 6 gears. 10? Something is going to go pop.
@@rxonmymind8362 Ok, Uncle Rico. Better yet…go back to a Powerglide.
Wow, I knew the Ford would kill it, but I would have never guessed it would beat the GM trucks by over 3 minutes!!!
(And nearly the same gas mileage to boot!)
Super impressed!
Would love to see 2 more tests with this
1. This vs the 6.8 V10 and the old 7.5 460 V8
(Of course the 7.3 will win, but will be entertaining to see how things have progressed)
2. Godzilla vs Scorpion
(7.3 V8 vs 6.7 Powerstroke V8)
Pulling same trailer
The diesel will more than likely win but it would be very informative and entertaining to see what the differences of them will be
Great video TFL!
And huge props to Ford for absolutely kicking ass!
All I can say is proof is in the pudding. Everyone dissed the Dyno runs saying, Ford lied, it doesn't have the power, They overrated it, etc. Well, It seems that is not the case, this engine is one STRONG SOB. Back at the dyno run they did say the torque management was preventing it from making more power, and now you know why, the engine sits right where it can put that power down to the road and keep it there. KUDOS to Ford!
Ford is #1 always has been and always will be. I bought a 2019 F250 Lariat Super Duty 6.7 and it’s a beast pulling. The interior is very nice as well and a 7 year warranty.... I’m sold!
Waking up to hot coffee and an Ike gauntlet makes for a great start to my day.🤘
I prefer waking up to a bj.
@BIG BLOCK FORD 😂😂😂
Liked before I watched. Smashed that up hill climb. 7.3 💪🏻
Finally a big block pushrod with a 10 speed trans and 4;30 gear, a match made in heaven! Way to go Ford. They are the undisputed leader!
Its actually not a big block its still a small block by like literally a hair maybe 2 hairs. 7.5 460 is big block like the old ones.
Got a 2020, love it. No DEF, no plugs, no searching for diesel. Convenient!
YESSS WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING!! TFL you guys rock! Best truck content on the web!
I’ve been waiting to see if the 7.3 was for me until after this video. Looks like I’ll be getting one soon! Thanks for the great work you all put in!!
I would love to see another score section. Acceleration from 50 to the speed limit. Would be great info for merging and passing power while loaded. As always love the videos!👍👍👍
I agree, many times when trying to merge onto the freeway you are in the 40-55mph range depending on the on-ramp, so yes this really should be looked at too.
I agree but there are people who will cry that this isn’t a race car and it doesn’t matter.. bla bla they’ve never towed heavy and simply don’t understand.. I’ve been passed up by loaded semi trucks towing heavy (work flat bed truck) and it can get nerve racking when that ramp is short.
They do 35-60.
I personally have never been able to hold this heavy of a load on course at 50mph around a full cloverleaf (which usually have a massive bump to unsettle the chassis).. also if the ramp was metered you would have to come to a complete stop then do 0-60.....
Ford: Mic drop walks away
Everyone: 😯😶😱😐
4.3 gears vs 3.73 the Ford had better walk away, Apples and oranges test. But it is GM's bad they didn't equip their HD gassers better. My 02 has the 8.1/allison, I'd like to try this test.
@@ockgator would the tank have enough gas? lol
This 7.3 is going to a home run for Ford. It has 6 bolt mains so strength and durability are in its first name! Its going to see a lot street and drag racing applications, everyday use for motorhomes, farmers, plus of course you and me. Nothing sounds better than a Ford V8!
Ls sounds better
Please keep doing those raw footage videos. Those are great to see how it towed the load. Great work TFL.
This engine option is going to do great. More than enough power without all the complex emissions.
Definitely a better option for the majority of people. Less intital and overhead expenses compared to the Powerstroke, and more than capable for what a majority of truck owners need. With the lighter drivetrain, it'll have a higher payload, too, and feel a little more nimble (particularly offroad).
However, if you need to tow often, or at least tow loads heavier than the 7.3 can handle reasonably often, the Powerstroke is obviously a better investment. The power is unreal, too. Regardless, I think it would be hard to regret choosing either option.
squirting def into exhaust isnt complex compared to all the emissions controls on a gasoline engine...its an added cost for you but calling it simple is purely false
@@philtripe Gas emissions don't fail though because they aren't fragile like the diesel ones, and they don't throw your truck into limp mode lol.
@@philtripe , lol, t's much more than just squirting DEF. There's the DEF pump, the injector, the programming, the DPF filter, pre and post DPF sensors, EGR system with valves, coolers. Trust me. I run an emissions complaint diesel. To maintain that entire system is VERY complex and costly. I stand by my comment.
@@monoped_adventures I hope engineers create better emissions systems that are simpler and don't use EGR. That would significantly improve engine performance and longevity. Even if EV's replace ICE's in passenger cars, diesel is here to stay for awhile and current emissions technology needs to significantly improve.
Great idea. Been waiting for this 7.3 and this truck rocks. Gonna buy this truck for our travel trailer.
You need to put up some crime scene tape around the 2500, because the F250 straight up murdered it. Sub 9 min vs 11 min?!?
The Ford beat the Chevy by over 3 minutes. 8:42 vs 11:53
It should have. The Ford has more power and torque out of a bigger displacement engine and also had lower rear end gears. I believe the chevy had 3.73's. I'm sure the Ford 10 speed auto vs the Chevy 6 speed didn't hurt either. I'm glad Ford came out with this engine and it should be a huge hit.
@@Mr2004MCSS Not sure why they don't offer a 4.10 at least with the Silverado? Or do they, I don't recall ever seeing the option, it just goes from 3.73's down it seems.
@@wildbill23c I think they do but that the truck that was provided just didn't have the lower gears. I know that back in the day they offered 4.10 gears. I have a 98 3500 4x4 with the 454/auto with 4.10 gears.
@@Mr2004MCSS The 454 was a great engine too, too bad they quit making that :(. 4.10's are pretty good I think, 4.30's are great for a dedicated tow rig, but a 4.10 is a good compromise followed by 3.73's.
One of my favourite channels on here.
Love the no BS reviews
Ike Gauntlet test videos are my favorite, no matter what you're testing
One suggestions, on the acceleration sections of these reviews, leave the uncut footage until the desired speed is reached.
Love the channel, keep the videos coming!
Agreed, you can barely the hear the engine.
i think they cut it so when they upload the uncut raw version we will see it.
anyway it will be good to see also here!
Thanks for another great video. One thing I have noticed in your videos recently is that you tend to cut out the performance going up the hill to keep videos shorter. I personally enjoy watching how the truck performs when you are getting up to speed and how well it maintains speed throughout the ascent, decibel levels, etc. my request would be to keep that portion of the video as it does add value for the viewers. I’m excited to see more 7.3l videos!
They prob will add a full uncut video like they did last week with the Powerstroke. Doing it this way is very smart on their part. Double the videos, double the money they make off the same test. Can't blame then at all for that.
That was the one part I was disappointed about too. I wanted to see more of the uphill part.
Listen too it roar 🐯 Ford did a great job and set the bar extremely high . Thanks Ford I’ll definitely look at the gas motor too when buying my new Truck .
I'm a GM guy but looks like GM is over rating some of their trucks when it comes to towing, my next investment will be a Blue oval Lol!! I can see why Ford is the best selling Truck in America, thanks for the great video guys we appreciate it!!!
Did you see where the Ford squatted 4 inches? That's with no one in the cab.....Some of you dudes are out right chubby chasers, what's it going to squat when you leverage tons O' fun in there?
@@itruck96 I didn't see that, I have a older Chevy c1500 pickup that I tow a 26' travel trailer with and the truck is max out. The truck squats around 2 1/2" so I installed air helper springs to level it out. The truck has plenty of pull power though. I believe it was easier and cheaper to level the truck out than if I had to get more power out of the truck. My truck is older and has some miles on it and didn't cost near the price of that Ford though, if I spent that much on it I wouldn't be Happy if it had excessive squat when I Max tow with it.
@@itruck96 huh?! The Chevy and the Ford squatted exactly the same...4 inches. You make no damn sense goofy!!!
Ford's killing it with that new 7.3!
Love that it pulls like that. Can’t wait to order mine with the tremor package
Im jealous! haha but you might want to be careful with tremor package, as awesome as it is, if your overall goal is towing. I saw another video where the recommended the fx4 for towing as the tremor package has a lower tow rating
@@haydenschindler9766 the only thing that changes the tow "rating" is the sticker they slap on it. Technical speaking it's the same. I don't think popping a 2" block, upgrading the shocks and adding 35" tires make any difference as far as towing is concerned.
If max towing is seriously your main objective get a dually/diesel f450 or greater...
Ordered mine a month ago. F350 7.3 tremor lariat ultimate. No moonroof, trailer bs knob or adaptive steering. MSRP still added up to 70k. But, dealer only charging 1% over invoice. Just had to get it with leds and ramps.
Good luck
@@MrVegaslive No a lift and bigger tires absolutely does affect what can be towed,
Angles increase turning bigger tires is harder.
💪🇺🇸
Thanks TFL you remind me of back to back to back car/truck tv shows on sunday mornings back in the day
I have owned 2 each of the 4:30 and 3:73 geared 6.2 gas F350s.
Unless you intend to tow over 10k very often, get the 3:73 gears. 3:73 is far superior for day to day driving with lighter loads. And it has more than enough power to pull heavy if you need to.
What are your thoughts on pulling 15500 every once in a while with 3.73s? I would be looking at the F350 vs of this. Thoughts?
some of the best real world testing out there, you guys really are some of the only people out there that do this kind of professional testing, great job
Labor foreman here. My company and pretty much everyone else stopped buying diesels around 2005 to 2007. My current truck is a 2017 f450 with a utility body and a 6.8 v10. I hate it. Only got one more year with this dog, and I just drove a new one with the 7.3 and a 10 ton trailer fully loaded. I am in love, difference is night and day. Can't wait for my 4 yr turn in.
I actually turned off a Nutnfancy vid to watch this one! I must really like you guys.
John Wesley love nutnfancy
I used to watch his videos but they were so long lol. I did like his bolt action reviews
Considering the 2017 F250 powerstroke they tested pulling 12.5k lbs up the Ike in 8:03 and 4 mpg. I think the 7.3 gas killed it and hung right with the diesel.
If the guys at TFL did not have to follow the speed limit, the 6.7 Diesel would have gone much quicker. When you are limited to 60 mph going up, it also limits the time required. So head to head, no speed limit, the 6.7 would have walked away and won by over 2 min.
@@sammysampson183 True, but I think the point was that in the real world you're always going to be limited to the speed limits, and if you're over 10 to 14 tons on most passes your speed is going to be limited by the truck speed limit which is usually around 55 to 65 mph which the gas truck can do those speeds. And on down hill sides of mountains I've seen as low as 25 mph speed limits for trucks.
@@dedalliance1 Somewhat true. I am waiting for the day I see someone actually drive the speed limit....
@@sammysampson183 Well, one day I was crossing over the Sierra mountains from Reno into Sacramento California with my brand new 3/4 gas truck and I was pulling my tiny 14' aluminum boat trailer that weighs probably max 700 pounds with the boat, and the speed limits said 55 mph for trucks with trailers and 65 mph for everyone else. So I was like no way that even applies to me my trailer doesn't even have brakes on it. Then I got pulled over for speeding lol. He did let me go with a warning though. And my uncle who lives in Sacramento did say that one time he was pulling like a tiny harbor freight flatbed trailer thing with his SUV on the same road and got pulled over for not doing 55 lol.
So Yeah, people don't really follow the speed limits but if you want to avoid getting tickets it's probably a good idea, especially if you're in places like commietornia lol.
Sammy Sampson
That could be true. I just wish the diesel video they had was with it pulling 16k lbs. What would the diesel have done with 3500 lbs more weight behind it in that video?
Looks like Ford has developed a good setup for the chassis platforms. 👍
Just picked up my 7.3l F-350 a few weeks ago. Your video was key in my decision to pick this up rather than a diesel for what I'll be pulling. Definitely a powerful beast, even moreso in person. Even with the 8' bed it handles and maneuvers acceptably well, and for the size and my config with the 4.30 gearing we're getting about 12mpg around town and 15/16 on the highway so far, which isn't too bad to me in exchange for all the power.
Just curious what’s the payload capacity
@@JT-lu8vt Payload sticker lists 4,391 as my payload. I hauled 3800lb of stone pavers on a palette about 10 miles at 55-60 a few weeks ago and no issues at all. With that weight over the axle the truck sat about 1-2” higher than level in the back. Acceleration and braking were all very smooth even with a few bumps in the less than ideal road.
Impressive! My old 454 7.4 L Chevy redlined at about 1/2 the RPM of this new Ford big block and had 1/2 the rated HP.
Same with the 460 in my 1997 F350; that thing was an absolute slug.
My van failed the Ike Gauntlet on the 30th of January on my way to Utah. I need that Ford!😀
Finally you guys made my Saturday morning !!!!!!
Wow, over 3 minutes faster than the Chev. It really needs a 4.30 and the 10 speed aswell. Love the way that 7.3 sounds also.
V8 sounds amazing and that blue color is wonderful
When your truck sales are priority number 1,2 and 3 you invest everything you can to make sure it stays number 1 in every category. . Nuff said. Ford more then ever is dominating
You're talking from an investor's perspective. Sales revenue/profit + service revenue/profit = big bonuses for execs at ford for sure.
As a consumer, I'd rather have the opposite because there's no problems with the product and it lasts forever.
This 7.3 is really giving me something to consider. Wife and I have been looking at getting a trailer for camping, and concerned the f150 won't do a solid enough job.
This gives me plenty of oomph, without spending and extra 10k on a diesel. Especially since towing will not be part of a daily operation.
That is a HUGE difference in time vs the Silverado. I think the rear end and the 10 speed made a significant impact, but that is seriously impressive. Maybe I was wrong to scoff at the 7.3 power ratings of "only" 430hp and 475 ft lbs.
I saw dyno results on stock motor and extrapolating down it looks like it has around 350 ft lbs of torque at idle and goes over 400 before 2000 rpm. It is a torque monster.
Yep and ford always gears for power. I will still take the GM 8.1 it would get the same gas mileage towing or not. I wish I got the duramax, It was so good at towing to Loon lake with the Jeep on trailer.
@@jaytrock3217 cant tow much with an 8.1 and the mileage doesn't change. Mine went from 12 to 5.
Think of this. The old boss motors and cobra jets never broke much over 350 HP and those where "race" designed engines.
Bigfoot1955 Yea it starts 400+ TQ at 1500 RPM.
This 7.3 will have more than enough power for most 3/4 ton truck applications. With a gas engine, it is way more forgiving with short trips. Diesels like to run for long periods of time and a short trip to the grocery store and back may not be enough time for it to get up to proper temperature. If you are buying a truck to tow very heavy everyday, than I feel a diesel's higher performance is worth it. For the guy who tows their travel trailer across the country once a year, the 7.3 will be plenty powerful enough to safely and comfortably get you out and back. Bang for the buck, the 7.3 has my vote. I do not need to impress anyone by purchasing a diesel. Bragging rights just costs you money you do not need to spend.
Ford big blocks still have a wonderful sound, even in the modern era. Well done 👍
I like the 7.3 but I'll stick to the 6.2. The 7.3 is for professionals or heavy duty men. The 6.2 is enough for me to drag around 3,000 of gravel and tow a trailer.
Congratulations to Team Ford!
Good lord. That truck was MOVING.
That 7.3 and 10 speed combo is a beast. I thought the time would be a lot closer to 10 mins. Would've liked to have seen a bit more uphill footage, particularly on how the transmission performed. 1 mpg seems to be the average difference between 4.30s and 3.55s (unladen). If thats the case, 4.30s are well worth it.
atmospheric conditions can account for more than 1 mpg...they were tested at different times temperatures and if i remember correctly that one was different locations so different elevations...in order to be accurate...they have to be done simultaneously, twice! and the two averaged together
I am willing to bet the difference is less than 1 mpg unless your going 70 plus and towing the 4.30 may actually be better on fuel. The 10 speed auto really is a game changer because you always have the right gear to keep the engine in the meat of the powerband. My 3.5 /10 speed F150 is towing monster , my experience towing with it now I would never buy an HD truck with only a 6 speed auto for towing .
I have one on order. Very excited! Thanks for the review!
WOW, THAT TRUCK IS BONKERS!!!!. IT STOMPED THE HELL OUT OF THE CHEVY BY A LONG SHOT.
that is an impressive result on that 7.3!
Love the 7.3!
I mentioned this in the last video but I’ll say it again - please stop using squat as a means of deducting points. These trucks are made to squat and ultimately are what give the truck its towing characteristics such as handling and stability. It’s not as much of a negative as you guys make it out to be.
Boo Ya my thoughts exactly if they don’t squat they either have an air bag system to maintain or ride like a brick.
Roflmfao, yea the more it squats the less handling and stability you have . 🤦♂️ it only squats because the girly men nowadays want a car like ride when empty.
@@NoName-tz5ji 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bradford Ramm You’re only partially correct. Squat lowers the center of gravity on the rear, giving better handling and stability but to a point. Squat can absolutely be a detriment if too much is present. You’re wrong, however, about why they’re soft nowadays. The reason they’re no longer stiff as tractors is because it dramatically improves towing characteristics which is why today’s gas engines tow more than old diesels despite having less power. You’re heavily underestimating what a proper suspension setup will do for handling while towing.
Boo Ya less power? Lol my early 99 came with 210 hp . It’s the transmission nowadays that allow a higher tow rating not the girly boys suspension or box frame for car like handling
love the ford gt
I have a 2020 7.3L bought brand new. Has 28k miles now. Has been running so strong. My favorite truck by far. I did upgrade the suspension. Did Skyjacker comfort ride 2.5" lift coils. New track bar brackets. Swapped the 2" block for 4" in the rear and then added bilstein shocks all the way around. Finished it off with some 35" Kenda RT's. Love love love it. Rides so much better.
For all of those wondering how much of this is engine vs. transmission, it should be noted that the Chevy and Ford have very similar power curves (nearly identical) up to about 4500 RPM (I actually have some posts over on Jalopnik comparing most of the big gas engines of the last couple decades). It should also be noted that Ford's own stated objectives were that the engine largely stay under 4500 RPM in operation. As such, I lay the difference in result pretty much entirely on transmission and programming. This is the same challenge the 6.4 Hemi had. It was and is a great engine, but until recently with the 8 speed, it was entirely kneecapped by the 6 speed behind it. I imagine GM will have a better transmission behind the 6.6 in the near future...can't come soon enough.
I’m a Ram man, but this is pure awesomeness...
I'm a Ford man, this 7.3 really is going to kick a lot of butt. I also love the RAM's (all of them). I feel like Ford and RAM rule the HD universe and have for a long time now. Especially the Cummins...and I am an honest man. Dodge saved themselves with that Cummins deal. Ford saved themselves by making their own 6.7's in house. I absolutely love this 7.3 Godzilla! Did you hear that thing humming at 55 MPH?? Fuck-N-Aye, Awesome.
That was another great job. Would like you to do the ike with 7.3 and 3.55 gear. This would show us if large gears makes difference with 10 speed trans.
Of course it would, why on earth wouldn’t it?
This video plus a heavy duty off-road test both on the same day!! You guys just made my weekend. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see the longer full video tomorrow.
Ford if your reading this please bring back 7.3 powerstroke! The 7.3 gas is a 110% success and a BEAST!
Damn, it CRUSHED the new 6.6 GM by a huge gap. If you can live with the mpg, and don't need to tow diesel weight, I wouldn't look at anything else.
Now, bring on the 6.4/8spd Ram!
The Chevy had 3.42 gearing which severely hurt it. Needs a 10 speed to compete with this Ford though cause it isn’t even close right now.
Yes I would love to see the 8.1 come back and match that up to the 10-speed that would be a 7-3 killer
@@johnnyb.1807 the 6.6 gas is 3:73
Ford 💪💪💪💪 for days. Great video gentlemen.
Awesome!!! The EPA is killing all the advantages that diesel held over gas. I'd take this over a new diesel any day. The repair costs on modern diesels are unbelievable. Also, this 7.3 will do what 90% of diesel owners actually need. Outside of commercial applications most diesel owners don't need that much towing capacity
If you drive both side by side I bet you'd change your mind. Until oil change time, then it hurts
David Lusk and fuel filters, Def fluid air filter etc.
John Doe def fluid is $10 once a year. Less at the pump. I do an oil change on my diesel once a year for $65. Fuel filters about every 1.5 years for $80. It’s not a big deal. I’d just never get gas for towing. And wouldn’t give up my exhaust brake either. That’s a game changer.
Power differences is unreal. Extra costs but you know that going in. You know paying 10k extra for more performance will have other out lining costs and restrictions but its all in what everyone wants. For towing heavy diesel all day. For jumping around town gas all day!
Jason Muffenbier wow, you definitely have no idea on what you're talking about!! MOPAR DEF 15 a gallon (5 gallons every 10,000 Miles not towing), both fuel filters 400 every 15,000 miles. Oil change is 200 every 15,000 miles and 80 for the air filter.
The video editing here is on point, guys. Absolutely perfect.
I was excited to wake up to this video I have waited a long time for to see the 7.3 take on the ike
Great video guys once again!! Hopefully you guys are gonna take your Super Duty up the Ike as it has the 3:55 rear end I believe. It’d be interesting to see the difference the rear end gearing makes.
Ford killed the competition on these 2020 trucks.
Impressive i wish they showed more of it going up the hill tho. Wanted to hear more of that 7.3 doing work lol.
That 7.3 is a brute. Making good power on boost too. 4 digit power. Can’t wait to see the aftermarket in a few years.
There should be a TFL Extra channel, where we can see all the process of making this type of video
I would have liked to see more of the engine RPM and shifting characteristics during the video, this gives a good idea, on how much horsepower ford is letting you have, this video is very abbreviated compared to ikes ive seen in the past. seeing the raw video would be nice.
I agree with you, would've liked to see the whole run up the Ike.
samus989 I know right? I remember when they first brought the 5.0 on the Ike in a 2016 F150, you could hear that baby singing the entire way!
samus989 yes please
samus989 maybe they will publish the full unedited video like the did for the 1 ton duallies.
They just posted an unedited extended version of the whole run for the diesels the other day. Hopefully they continue doing that! I love seeing the whole runs like their old Ike runs from 2014
With the distance and time that’s an average of 57 MPH. I am VERY VERY impressed.
The interior seemed a bit loud on the uphill portion. Usually they check decibel level. With the 10 speed I was expecting a bit better downhill performance.
My 7.3L Tremor was built this week and being shipped soon. CAN. NOT. WAIT.
Ryan Sheard Jealous! Enjoy that Tremor! What color and trim level? I have a 2018 F-150 Platinum with the 3.5L. I just lifted and changed rims and tires. LOVE my truck but the Tremor has me seriously considering a trade haha.
Ryan Sheard I believe it has the aftermarket exhaust in it already. A sound check wouldn’t be accurate for factory ratings.
Ryan you are going to love your Tremor. I've had my XLT 7.3 Tremor for 1,200 miles now and it's amazing. Congratulations on the new ride
@@lukerehbein7211 the aftermarket exhaust was out into their long term test truck. This is not that one.
@@Pilot545 I got the Lariat in Blue Jeans. IMO, the Lariat is a perfect trim level.
I passed you guys in this rig going up I70 in traffic last Friday! I figured there would be a video soon.
All the Ike Gauntlet videos should be at least 20 mins long. The more you put in the video the better!
Chad Douvikas I agree. I think the editors have been leaving too much on the cutting room floor lately.
I love this channel. I’m in the market for a new HD gasser. As a Chevy guy, I was excited about their 6.6...but then I heard about fords 7.3 and I was curious. After seeing your head to head tests up the Ike, I’ve gotta admit, I’m probably going Ford this time.
I feel like the Ford performs so much better because of the 10-sp and GM is only using a 6-sp with their 6.6L Gas V8. On a 3/4 ton I like the idea of independent front suspension. If GM offered the 10-sp with the 6.6L gasser I bet it would perform similar.
The 4.30 rear gear in the Ford vs the 3.73 in the Chevy is the difference. The engines make within 11ft lbs of each other.
