      Wish this was my experience with them. I can’t even get a datalog configuration from them. They keep dropping a link to their webpage displaying which PID’s and DMR’s to select, but should have config files to send at request like Unleashed, BCB, and others have. Don’t get me wrong the base 93 map feels a lot better on my gen 2 3.5eb but think it would be much better after a few revisions

      @berserker406 not my experience. I've had some issues with my SCT programmer and 5 Star tunes and they helped me get through 14 (off and on) painful hours of firmware and software updates. This went down while I was installing a JLT cold air induction system. I ran into the issues because JLT relocates the map sensor and the truck won't run without a specific program after it's installed. That's why I had called them in the first place, to order the tunes for the intake.
      But making matters worse, I got a notice that I had to get it into Ford to take care of the t-case recall. I was going to need to remove the intake. But I had them rewrite the tunes with my new intake in mind, instead of my earlier versions without it. This way I didn't have to pony up for the new version lol. They sent me my rewritten, uncorrupted tunes without the intake so I had both sets. No charge.
      I guess it's just how you interact with them? I also share a lot on social media, so that might help too lol. But yeah, in my experience @5startuning is way legit!

      The 7.3 is a commercial engine designed for longevity and dependability, not for the best mpg numbers. After all it replaced the 20 year run of the 6.8 v10 in Ford commercial vehicles. Based on that I suspect the 7.3 will stick around for a long time.

    Great video!! That's a very nice, reliable, safe upgrade to the Godzilla power plant. And, WOW!! What a performance difference!!I like how you broke down the financials at the end. But you didn't mention a few things...
    First, and probably most importantly, is you can fill up ANYWHERE. You don't have to go hunting for diesel fuel. If you're not in a rural area, that could be a challenge. You also don't have to pay the premium price for diesel. Not sure about the rest of the country, but around here, one pays between $.50 - $1.00 more per gallon for it.
    Second is you don't have the very high costs associated with diesel repairs. Everyone I've ever talked with complained about how freaking expensive every trip to the shop is. You can't take a diesel in and leave with a bill less than $1500. And there's supposedly ALWAYS 'something else wrong'...That's not usually the case with gasoline engines. They tend to just keep working (and fail catastrophically if/when they do!!)
    Third - what would be the difference in cost of ownership for a year between this and a diesel? Something I'd be interested in is seeing a real-world comparison of fuel mileage between this beast and a diesel. You guys love tow tests - can you take the beast for a full-tank tow test then compare the fuel consumption with a comparably powered diesel?
    Again, great vid on a pretty wicked truck!!

  • @andyharman3022
    @andyharman3022 3 года назад +18

    Five Star looks to have a very reasonable setup here. They have done very well to limit the boost to 8 psi and have a nice, big intercooler on it. The torque curve is very nice for an engine with a centrifugal supercharger. If I owned one, I would limit the tow capacity to about 30% less than the original factory rating, and be careful with my right foot to only use as much power as I need to get up those hills. I loved the 0-60 run with the boosted truck and the 15000 pound trailer, but at 16 seconds it does show that you're not going to outrun traffic when loaded that heavily. Save the power for when the truck is running free.

    Andre, if you are going to spend the cash on a blower for this 7.3L (cam in block), it would be worth it to port the heads and swap in a cam. It’s not too expensive and with a set of headers and exhaust, you tap into much more HP than a cam/ported engine that is not blown. A larger damper pulley is a cheap add on that adds even more RWHP. IMO the 4.30 gear would help a lot on low end for towing. If the Ford does not have a posi, Auburn makes one that would again provide even keeled delivery of power to both wheels instead of one. I have a similar setup on my Tundra’s 5.7L and it’s a towing BEAST. The 10 speed’s OD keeps revs down for good hwy mpg. Good video! TFLT is a great channel.

    For me the most unenjoyable thing about these powerful trucks is the open/e-locker rear diff. Even when you pedal an ecoboost f150 on the street it is full time power restriction and traction control. Anything with this much power needs some kind of limited slip to be enjoyable in the road.

    I run 8psi boost and water methanol injection by Snow Performance, a Colorado based company.
    No one will dyno my truck because they did not build it but 0-60 times the computer estimates 650+/- 25 HP with full torque management and conservative tune to save the transmission.

    Why has nobody invented an A/C clutch type drive for belt driven superchargers? If you could turn it on and off at will it would be sweet. Imagine that setup with a switchable dual fuel tank (one high and one low octane). You could run cheap gas without boost, but if you want to play, flip 2 switches!!!!!!

    Could you do a breakdown then as far as what kind of fuel economy this conversion with the supercharger or pro charger would get versus a diesel? And then factor in the cost of the fuels and see which is really more efficient and better bang for the buck. The way I understand it is that diesel produces more BTUs than gasoline so I would think the diesel would still be more efficient and get better fuel economy. Also, I would imagine that the diesel would have no problem seeing 200,000 miles where is a supercharged gas engine that may be a stretch. Maybe I’m wrong

    • @mikeatgmail9705
      @mikeatgmail9705 2 года назад

      @Jeremy H The 3.5L is fast but try towing an enclosed (let's says 10k) trailer with it. Good luck going uphill, trying to pass at 70 mph or do 80 mph.The V6 doesn't have the rotating mass of a V8 and relies on boost for power. The 7.3 is still fast and has the power, I agree the mpg is going to suck. The 6.7 is fast and has more than enough power and will get the best mpg like you said.
