@@ivanmartinez632 you're right my friend. When I bought my 2000 F-350 7.3 in February 2000, it only had 13,000 miles on it and I paid $30,000 for it. I couldn't imagine shelling out $83,000 for one now. I'll jus stick to my analog 7.3 😁
But they literally print money. Throw a plow on and you have a snow plowing business. Throw a trailer behind it and you can go hotshotting, run the oilfields, start a landscaping company, Deliver RV's etc.
@Don Olypopper, I live in Colorado and travel that stretch of highway regularly in the winter, to go snowboarding. I have seen many semis with those tire socks. 🤷♂️
@Don Olypopper I agree with you. I am surprised every time I see a semi with tire socks......... Then I make sure to get ahead of them as soon as possible. 🤣
I think it is only two additional levels for the Ford above the King Ranch. It's the Limited and the Platinum (I forget which of those two is highest). Mr. Truck misspoke but Andre had it right.
No need to wait for the Ram. We have three Ram 3500 duallys at work. within a week of each other 2 of them had a "service anti-lock brake system warning" come on. We had to send a man to the dealership to make the appointments as they don't answer the phone. The first one at 40K miles was $1300. out of warranty. The 2nd at 34K just made it under the warranty but they found $500. other things that needed attention. Had to send a man back to the dealer to see if they were done.
I drive a 2017 f450 cab n chassis I do mostly payloads in it for work and believe me when I say that Ford has done that more times than it should align with uphill assist. Pisses me off. It goes away but very annoying
Yea, I live in the south eastern united states for a reason. I have seen the city shut down for what places like Colorado wouldn't even call a light dusting. I know and understand that type of winter driving is well outside of my capabilities.
I've towed 41,900 pounds of 40' gooseneck trailer with a 40' hc shipping container full of tools and a forklift inside, 2000 + miles across the country 2020 chevy crew cab flatbed 3500hd dually.
guyforlogos I’m thinking compare the 2020 F350 towing 30,000lbs vs the 89 F350 towing 7,000lbs. Which would be faster? (Or would the 89 even make it up?)
I have an f-350, 2009, but if I were towing that much weight I would definitely go ahead and get the f-450. Absolutely love this channel btw! You guys are great!
Fingers crossed that Fords new fuel system doesn't crap the bed like the previous gens do. That is the Powerstrokes weak spot, the basic engine is a beast, but if you go to forums, the fuel system is the biggest bitchfest. They don't like water, any little bit of water in the fuel and kiss the CP4 goodbye, which then contaminates the rest of the fuel system and it ALL has to be replaced. Hope Ford has fixed that.
Engine will be fine its that bloated 10 speed transmission that's gonna be the biggest problem, way too many gears for a work truck, if they wanted a 10 speed they should have made it a manual transmission, slushboxes for towing oftentimes is where the problems come from overheating and burning up clutch packs :(. Look at their fuel economy all those gears didn't do anything to help them LOL.
Colder weather mean more dense air, these are great conditions for the two V8 diesels in this test. I’d love to see this in the summer time, when it’s warm out.
Super video and effort guys. I rank your work 15 points out of 10 maximum. Appreciate all the work you put into this effort. Waiting for the RAM test, please make sure its wet, similar temperature, and snowing to ensure all three are on equal grounds.
Awesome video guys! I never thought I’d see the day where a one ton would pull a load like this. That’s a lot of machine! This is exactly the application these pickups are meant for and the real world testing TFL always delivers. Love the Cat excavator too! Keep up the great work!
I use to cut right of ways for under ground pipelines. We drove a Chevy 3500 and pulled a 40ft trailer with a Komatsu dozer. The only concern we had was making sure the small local bridges would hold up to the weight.
P W but these aren’t 1 tons any more. The F-150 is almost a 1 ton. Shit the ranger can hold 1700 pounds in the bed. Those trucks can hold 7,000 pounds plus in the bed. That’s 3.5 tons. Really they gotta update the names of our mini/full-size trucks. But yah to your point holy carp these things are impressive
Oh what ever. I've seen an 85 ramcharger with a 318 pull one of those stupid plastic crapbags AND a 16' flatbed loaded with red oak rounds up a muddy hill. I'd bet a 76 ramcharger with the factory lockers and a 440 would pull that easily if you put it on a bumper pull. Plus I've watched my dad rebuild his carburetor in the rain with a flashlight and a couple of screwdrivers. If you break down in one of those computerized obsolescence chasers you'd better have some killer AAA. I've always wondered, what happens when they stop updating the android os that controls your a/c and brakes? And what's with the ground effect skirts? You call it a truck and you only have like six inches of clearance under your plastic bumper? Also they look stupid. Ten speed gearbox is sweet though...
@@revwroth3698 Might be true, but what's a current-day buyer supposed to do? He (or she) needs a major work machine right now, not a 30-40+ year old vehicle that would be a virtual needle in a haystack to fine.
@@anthonyc1883 they're not that hard to find or necessarily that old. But what i tell everyone is research a car they like, see if they held up, find one and fix it up. If you absolutely need a ride immediately I don't know what to tell you but I swear it's cheaper (especially in the long run) to pick up an older vehicle that's dependable and go over it to make sure everything is good than to buy a new car for what, like $40,000 at least? I have a 93 Nissan pathfinder that i paid $900 for and since then I've put about another $4000 into it. Part of that was getting a newer and slightly bigger engine and installing it. Admittedly I did most of the work myself, thus sacrificing time to save money, but even if I'd had a mechanic do it all it would probably have been less than 10,000 more. I expect at least 300,000 miles from the engine before I have to rebuild it again, as long as I keep up with the maintenance, and I already found out that I can get another transmission for about $800 that's more modern if /when mine goes bad. For me the bottom line is that I have a very reliable and surprisingly capable vehicle that can be had by almost anyone for less than 20 grand. I feel like my kids are safer in the back with the double walled steel body and I'm already looking into adding some modern safety features like blind spot monitors, lane change assist, and backup camera. Plus my air conditioning isn't reliant on an Android tablet mounted in the dash that allegedly stops getting service updates after a short time, my brakes aren't relayed through a computer, and I don't have any rubber bands in my transmission. I actually got rear ended on a freeway by a 2017 chevy equinox and that POS was almost completely destroyed while I just had a few dents and a smashed tail light. That incident really illustrated the difference in the way they make cars these days for me.
As over exaggeratedly ignorant you sound; I will dispel this unto you with my experience in sub arctic conditions. Cummins makes the better diesel engine than Ford and Chevy. Up here in Fairbanks Alaska; you’ll see way more people driving Cummins than anything hands down. Don’t take my word for it, take a look yourself via street camera or google maps street view or something. People are willing to spend the extra money to Cummins over Power’Strokin and Dura’Climax’n.
@@CIA_Alien Perhaps he was making a joke not so much about Cummins not being a worthwhile vehicle but about the general braggadocio many vehicle owners have about one feature or another, such as the power, the MPG, how little they paid for it, etc. At least, that's the impression I got from his comment. But, definitely good to hear of your observations with the Cummins.
@@lonewhitewolf8232 give me a break (no pun intended). They did use the Ex brake in the GM, but it's not automatic like the Fords is and has been for many years. Ford's auto exhaust brake comes on once the speed increases over the chosen speed. GM's doesn't. Mystery solved. Nobody is pulling a fast one, so you can get back.in the mystery machine Scooby.
I’d argue the King Ranch is a different style luxury package, not “steps” down. KR beats Platy in my opinion with styling badging and interior color and leather options.
@@jeffreyrogers8151 i agree lariats are in a different class than the three above but im a middle class man so the lariat is plenty good enough for me because it really has everything you need and more. Also i will not buy a truck with a button to start it. The king ranch and above are definately much nicer and better packages but for the money and the looks (blacked out) it was a dealmaker for me. Very happy!!! and i never noticed the leather not on the back seat lol so thanks for pointing that out!
I always knew that the transmission was holding Ford back. Ford is the only brand that’s all in-house. Glad they finally got it all put together now. Good job Ford
What happened to showing the trucks going up and down the hill. All we get are tiny highlights of it now. I want to see how it tows, not just the time.
Really good job guys I drove I 70 through a really heavy snowstorm last month in my Ram 1500 4x4 without a trailer, so pulling 30,000 lbs is pretty impressive to me. I really like both trucks. Can't wait to see the Ram pull the trailer and I hope it's snowing like this contest was presented.
It's not really a new truck, it's a refreshed truck if I recall correctly, with a better engine and transmission. When an all new truck drops that is going to be interesting.
@@Loganlanfear21 My bad, one uses exhaust compression back into the exhaust manifold to decrease acceleration and ease braking.(Exhaust) The other releases compressed air from the cylinders creating less power, thus better breaking.(Jake)
OK. I don't have a dog in this fight (I own a Ram), so don't read this the wrong way. But was the downhill really a fair comparison? I had to watch it twice. 9 brake applications for the GMC and 5 for the Ford. But with the Ford, they were like 'we had to brake.....but then we put on the automatic exhaust brake......'. With the GMC, they were talking about the 35-40 mph range....then talking about having to apply the brakes.......then went right to ' we had 9 brake applications'. Was that a fair comparison? For sure, they sounded all 'giddy' when driving the Ford. Did the GMC not have an automatic exhaust brake application? Before I'm being called an idiot, they sure as Hell didn't MENTION it. They just went right into the '9 brake applications' stuff.
Those trucks are made to squat under load. Just because one squats less doesn’t mean it’s better. That marginal increase in squat could mean dramatically better driving dynamics while towing and increased stability and ride quality.
Boo Ya you’re so right. I’ve always hated when they talk about squat. I mean ya, a trucks shouldn’t look like it’s going to take off like a plane, but where talking inches in this case. When you’re hauling as much as this with that much tongue weight it’ll squat. Who cares
I agree. A truck should be allowed to squat a certain amount for its max tongue weight. This would allow the suspension to get into that "sweet spot" for both ride and handling. Otherwise, it would be too heavily sprung, and have neither. Axle hop is a bitch on a slick curve.
Great video as always! I really found this helpful when shopping for my truck. Thank you so much I absolutely love my black 2020 Denali Dually! It’s coming up on 100k miles now. It works everyday and never complains. Great looking truck! Always getting compliments, regardless of how dirty. It’s been used for catering special events, rescuing livestock from mountain tops during wildfires and delivering food to people and animals trapped in from historic snow storms. Thanks so much for your videos on the heavy duty trucks! Y’all really helped me with a tough decision!
what happened to the GMC over 4:00 to 4:05? It looks like it slide sideways while braking, maybe the camera angle. The Ford looks way more composed with the heavy load, like a little bit more planted over the road. God review as always.
All the Duramax trucks come with the Exhaust Brake. So I don't understand why they didn't mention using it. I use mine even when I'm not towing. I think they should edit this video to say whether the GMC Exhaust Brake was used or not.
I was about to say the same thing. All Duramax engines comes with it in heavy duty form. Idk why it wasnt used. And im.not buying the Ford was that much faster than the GMC. I can take it being faster but not by that large a margin.
the engine brake was used on both. ford has "auto" and "on" in the ford "auto" the computer determines how much engine brake to applay based on accelerator and brake input to try and hold a set speed that it thinks the driver wants. "On" is max engine braking. On the chevy it is either "On" or "Off". in "On" the computer determines how much to apply all the time. I would assume the chevy had a bad performance because the truck knows at that temp there is a risk of ice and didnt close the vanes on the turbo all the way. because it doesnt want you to crash. TFL tested the Ford in "Auto" mode to try and keep it apples to apples. both trucks say not to use tow haul mode or the exaust brake in slippery conditions as it could cause loss of control. Gm tries to protect you, Ford just goes "welp i told you not to but we can do it your way." EDIT: exhaust brake. Engine brake is would be a Jake brake, my mistake
I have driven the 2020 6.6 Duramax at length and for whatever reason the exhaust brake is nowhere near as aggressive on this truck compared to 2017-2019 L5P. I can see why they needed so many brake applications. Also, after losing to the 2017 L5P Silverado Duramax dually in the last Ike Gauntlet, Ford sure did a great job of making sure they had the best performing truck!
Yeah, but keep in mind, the 6.7 is the first actual Ford diesel and it has been incredibly reliable. I'd be surprised if the Ford 6.7 wasn’t shown to he the most reliable out of the three diesels in this segment. Also, the 1995 through 2003 7.3 diesels were extremely reliable, but the 6.0 and 6.4 were disasters out of the box. Those are designed by International/Navistar though.
Great job boys! Like to see a test of a 7.3 dually with the 4.3 gears to see if it can actually work in place of a 6.7. So many of us have that 15000lb fifth wheel or in my case a truck camper. The dually will provide tons of payload and towing stability but can the 7.3 tow a 15000lb trailer or 5th wheel
The 7.3 will tow 15000 pounds for sure! But if you want to tow 15000 pounds through the mountains, or think you will be towing at 15k all the time I would definitely go with a diesel. For the exhaust brake and torque. But the 7.3 would be great for only going a few hours from home with 15k behind you once a month
I would like to see the real world every day cost to own figures for these trucks, including RAM. An across the board one for one comparison. I had a 2019 F-250 w/ 6.7 for work recently and absolutely loved the truck although I'm a GMC/Chevy person at heart, and for me, the Ford set the benchmark for a HD truck. I haven't driven the GM offerings or the RAM so I haven't had to get a feel for which truck I would prefer. Great video TFL. You are conducting the tests that other outlets only talk about in their reviews, and for the guys (and Gals) buying HD trucks, this will certainly help in many decision making processes.
That’s why I bought the Ford 6.2 gasser. I’m not pulling 30,000# I pull 8-10,000 my point is the gassers gets the same mileage as the diesels now days just less torque
On my 2019 F250 I have two exhaust brake options. The first press of the EB button on the dash gives me full exhaust brake, a second press gives me about half exhaust braking. When I’m coming out of the tunnel and want the truck to work for me I set my Select Shift to 4th gear or 5th gear depending on the traffic conditions. The truck has no problem holding and decreasing speed without touching the brakes. If you set cruise at 35 mph and the truck is increasing speed it was in a gear two high to maintain the set speed. You have to use the Select Shift option to your advantage.
Just a tiny Chevy 1500 guy here but I know my cruise doesn’t hold me so I plan accordingly and set it 5mph below the speed I actually want to descend the hill. If I want to go 55 I set it to 50. Holds me at 55 with no brakes. We’re all splitting hairs here anyways. Great video!!
Wow a few years ago TFL did the 2018 Ram and Ford with the same weight and they both got times around the same as the GMC in this test. Crazy that the new Powerstroke was over a minute faster!
I would have liked to see the equivalent Ram looked at as well. It was an interesting video though. I can't imagine buying one of these unless the towing capacity was needed regularly in which case it really did look like the Ford was the way to go just for the extra gear choices even if everything else had been equal. I guess it remains to be seen how well all that tech holds up over time.
Awesome Video! I wish I could have seen this before I ordered and picked up my 20 King Ranch dually with 4.10 ratio. It was a hard decision and I'm happy, but the 3.55 would have done the job fine.
I agree. Makes no sense to run the cruise downhill in snow and ice carrying 30k pounds. Also they said they used the engine brake on the Ford after that, but wasn’t sure they did on the GMC, or at least I didn’t hear them say they used it.
Nathan Miller why is it crazy to use the exhaust brake in poor weather conditions? It better than applying brake peddle because there is no potential for your wheels to lock up. That's the whole point of the feature
I’m going to assume more that more than half of you don’t know where the king ranch is. But if you ever get the chance you should take a tour. The headquarters is located in Kingsville Texas If you ever want to take a wildlife tour or something like that.
Do you guys take temp into consideration when you compare different days on these runs? A winter run with much more dence air will be easier than a summer run.
Honestly makes me even more confident in my purchase, just picked up a 2020 f-350 powerstroke today. It's not a king ranch, it's and xl, and it has 4.10 gears but more to the point, I'm glad I chose a Ford after seeing this
Just don't get in an accident. You'll end you'll end up toast. Hopefully not but your truck will. I was hit on passenger on my 2019 F350 King Ranch Ultimate dually and it caught on fire. Good luck
I watch every video and I always think y’all are against Ford. This is the first time I felt Ford got a honest review thank you. I almost didn’t watch it
@@JohnDoe-nz6bk They definitely were not Ford biased. I still remember when they gave the Golden Hitch to the Ram because it sounded like a Diesel even though the Ford kicked it's ass. Mr. Truck was disgusted with them over it. Said they were all out of their minds. I think that was before Aundre was there.
John Doe I know I’ve been watching these guys for years and they always complain about things that most people don’t care about like the sag, trust me if I’m towing that much weight you better believe I’ll have airbags long before I tow that
So happy to see the Ike. Thanks so much for listening to the recommendations to use the cruise control up and down the hill. With an available jake or exhaust brake, it makes a world of difference in brake applications. I hope that you use the cruise AND exhaust brake on ALL trucks going downhill. That is the only fair. Can't wait to see the RAM loose to Ford, as well.
Yeah the new Denalis have exhaust brake idk why they didn’t use that I’m sure it was an oversight but I’d they would use them on all the trucks the brake applications would probably be the exact same
Yea, I’m sure it was an ‘oversight’ to miss the button right in the middle of the dash. These guys kill me with stupidity sometimes, but no one else is doing a comparable test.
@Foxbody Platform 1977 1st Year Production. their isn't any excuse they stated that the Denali was top of the line in gm with every option well it didn't have every option and you are correct on the Ford because the Platinum is the top of the line . I've looked at them all on the Ford you can drive the price over $100k and the Denali upwards of almost $90k . The so called point is that if you are going to state it is the top of the line and has every option point out that it has every option . Not just say oh it loaded and has every option . It might have every option that the dealer ordered it with but didn't opt for every option you can buy on it . Of your looking for a point
@Foxbody Platform 1977 1st Year Production. oh yeah why ive weighed the odds of buying a new one or a newly used one but as far as GMC the Denali is as high as you can go and the high country is on the Chevy it would take few hrs to do a build sheet on a truck now a days . I did a full build sheet on just a regular cab ram 3500 4wd diesel and took most of the day to get all the specs and codes from the plant for all the options I wanted took and submitted it and the truck got built buy some other dealer that saw the specs and I found the truck and some farmer had already snatched it up . I can imagine doing it on a full spec Ford or gm now because the spec I did was a 17 model
I’d be curious to see how true that is now that there is the 10 speed. With all the ratios it really just means the trans picks a different gear to make up for the rear ratio.
The 10 Speed is a game changer, the gearing more than makes up for the rear end, so chances are, it would not be as good as one might think. The first gear in the 10 speed is VERY low. Check out the 6.7 and 7.3 dyno runs to see which gears they needed to test in between the 3.55 and 4.10 gears. My F350 has 3.55 with the 6 speed, that 2020 would leave mine sitting still with the same rear gear, regardless of the HP and TQ. There is a ratio chart floating around that compares the 6 speed and 10 speed ratios and the final drive with the different rear ratios, the 10 speed with 3.55 is actually better than the 6 speed with 4.10. If you slap 4.10 on the 10 speed, it might pull better, but would also use much more fuel due to the higher engine RPM, and hunt through the gears. Ford has the right idea, gearing that gets the job done and gets good fuel efficiency. Something to keep in mind with gearing, when towing/hauling, you want the engine in it's most efficient power band, when you are racing, you want to get the RPM's to the ground as fast as possible, so shorter gears are great for racing, but suck when it comes to putting the engine right where it works best. When done right, it gets into one gear that works the best for the engine and stays there, when wrong, the transmission hunts to keep the engine in it's power band. So would you rather have a truck that stays in gear, or one that moves off the line faster with a load and then hunts constantly to try to maintain speed? Don't know about you, but I'll take the one that doesn't hunt.
@@acdii the only different between the 3.55 and the 4.10 is torque multiplication to the ground and rolling speed for the same engine speed. In 6th gear(1.28:1) with the 4.10, climbing the hill at the hp rating(2800rpm) the truck is doing 50mph. With the 3.55 it's doing 57.7mph. Difference is the amount of torque getting to the ground. Because hp is just an equation of engine torque x rpm we can figure torque from hp like this 475hp@2800rpm = 890lbft(475hp x 5252 ÷ 2800rpm). We know the transmission ratio for 6th is 1.28:1(1.277:1). So with the 3.55 at 57.7mph(2800rpm in 6th) there is 4044lbft(890lbft x 1.28 x 3.55) available at the axle shaft. With the 4.10 at 50mph its 4670lbft at the axle shaft. More leverage to do work just at a slower pace. So many people misunderstand what horsepower is. It's an equation that determines HOW FAST WORK GETS DONE. Not how how much work can be done. The 445hp gm did the same amount of work, just slower. And 30 hp at 2800rpm is only 65lbft difference GM 445hp@2800rpm= 835lbft Ford 2019 450hp@2800= 844lbft Ford 2020 475hp@2800= 890lbft Ram HO Cummins 400hp@2800=750lbft Ram with the 4.10 isnt going to win any race up the mountain. Off the line, it just out pulls the GM. After that the GM will walk it. GM 910lbft x 4.61 x 3.42 = 14347lbft Ram 1000lbft x 3.75 x 4.10 = 15375lbft If hp dictated the amount of work to be done, semi trucks in Canada would need 1000hp engines to do the work we do. I have a 500hp/1850lbft highway tractor and it pulls 140k all day everyday. With 3.25:1 axles. My 450hp F350 should be able to do 126k because its 10% less power. But its couldn't do 80k even with the same 12speed trans because the torque is what is moving the load not the hp. 500hp@1700rpm =1544lbft. That engine creates so much torque through the usable rpm band. 1850lbft@1100=387hp 1850lbft@1200=422hp 1850lbft@1300=457hp 1850lbft@1350=475hp 1750lbft@1400=466hp 1750lbft@1500=499.6hp 1650lbft@1600=502hp 1550lbft@1700=501hp The leverage(torque) is doing the work, only thing that is changing is the rate(speed) is being done at. Same applies with smaller engines The 3.5HO EB has 450hp just like my 6.7 powerstroke and many semis. The EcoBoost would never do the work of my powerstroke and same goes for the powerstroke to the semi 450hp@5000=472lbft(EB) 450hp@2800=844lbft(PSD) 450hp@1900=1243lbft(dd13) 450hp@1400=1688lbft(Cat C15). The leverage is dictated the limit of work to be done HP RATING is how fast is gets done. The reason my truck does well at moving 140k is the 1850lbft x 11.74(1st gear) x 3.25:1 axle(70586lbft) taking off. And cruising at 60mph its rolling along at 1300rpm(1850lbft) x 0.78:1(12th gear) x 3.25:1(axle)=4689lbft@ the axle. To be truthful the 3.55 ithe the 1050lbft could maintain the 140k load at 57.7mph but the slightest increase of load(grade) would kill the momentum instantly. It's the getting it moving that's the issue not maintaining it
@@jnk26 I would like to see the dyno run with the 4.10 that was done with the 3.55, only change would be the rear, same truck too. Would be interesting to see the difference the gearing makes, mainly because the 7.3 had to run in a lower gear on the Dyno with the shorter rear end. I have towed with 3 different 3.5 EB, one with the 6 speed and 3.15 gears, was a beast on top end, one was 3.55 with the 6 speed, towed slightly better in a higher gear than the 3.15 did, but overall pulled the same, the 10 speed with the 3.55 though, pulled like it has 3.73 in the rear, and stayed in OD for the most part, where the others would be hunting. Just saying, the 10 speed makes the rear gearing not as important as it used to be. The advantages that the shorter gears gave before, are not as great anymore.
I like the testing and I appreciate what you guys do, but can you try to show more of the gauges during the down hill and up hill runs?? If that’s not what people want I get it, but people like me want to see how the truck actually works as well as your review. For example, how high did the Chevy and Ford rev under grade braking? The Chevy can rev to at least 4,500 RPM under exhaust braking and I would like to know if it did. I loved how you used cruise control and having used exhaust braking with cruise control before, I believe a 10 mph range would be better than only letting it speed up 5. This would give the trucks a better chance to show how powerful their exhaust braking is. I believe the Chevy’s is more advanced than the Fords, since it can rev higher. Thanks again for all the hard work! You guys are very dedicated to getting the testing done.
Years past I tested Ford and Ram trucks for Roush from Henderson to Wolcott and back. Fords had one glaring weakness and that was spray obscuring the side windows. To check mirrors, you needed to lower the window. I didn't see that happening on this test.
I don't like those running boards either. I usually put my foot on the ground then the running board will pop out and hit me in the shin. Also moving parts and electronics always have a potential to malfunction
@@kyleroberts4079 As a former Ford tech of about 12 years, I hated those power folding boards with a passion. A few months of use in the winter and the salt and grit eats the paint, then you got aluminum components that oxidize like crazy and lock the whole thing up. Got so bad, the aftermarket extended warranty companies started putting in specific exclusions of the boards in their coverages. Stupid things cost like $1700 PER SIDE to replace. And that's warranty cost, not retail.
@@Ashcrash82 I don't doubt that, the vehicle that I drove that had them was an ltz Chevy yukon. I didn't drive it much because it was one of a former employers personal vehicle. For one wtf does a yukon need those 4? They do not sit high off the ground and by the time I left that place of employment the driver's side one was stuck out & they hardly ever used it because they always had a crew cab pickup as well. I'm sure those ones would shove salt /snow and anything else into the rocker panels as well.
Awesome trucks! Thank you for doing these videos, I really enjoy them! I have not got to see one of the new GMC or Chevy duallies in person yet, but I'm quite impressed with the looks of them. I'm sure glad that the big three mfgs are so competitive, it makes us truck enthusiast happy!
Would be nice to see CAT scale tickets for both trucks. The Ford temps appeared to be higher then the GMC, I didn't hear any fan in the GMC. Need more gauge information on both trucks. Great test!
You guys are GREAT with the towing tests, this is your FORTE. Stay away from the "offroad" tests lol ...please. Enjoy these more and actually are real world vs. the dirt roads TFL Truck has trouble with lol
I purchased the 2019 450 last week, love the truck. I fought with my self about that or the 2020 but the fuel pump and the high level of friction in the ten speed transmission scared me. I’ll let them work the bugs out then look at the 10 speed later after all the trial and error.
Good idea man, my dad is going to get a new bronco a year after they launch, he wants all the bugs to be sorted out. In a year and a half I'm thinking I may do the same, either that a Jeep Wrangler, or a GMC 1500 AT4
@mtrujillo1973 its now 2020, the new trucks have been at dealers since October, he should have gotten a discount for buying a left over 2019. I would expect between 15-18K off MSRP (as 10K is the min discount you should be expecting on current model year truck you should expect.) Yes it will affect trade-in value as people seak out the 2020 models on the used market and 2017-2019MY trade-ins begin to flood the used market as people upgrade.
@mtrujillo1973 nope 1st hand market experience, 90 days after the new models hit the lot you could have gotten him that low, especially on a 450. Well I guess I forgot to ask did you get a Lariat+ model? If XLT still expect 25% off MSRP. That dealer would have ended up sitting on that truck and eventually sold at that price. Always could have negotiated "well this isn't how I would have ordered/optioned it but I suppose I could make it work for the right price." Saw the same thing in 2017 when the last redesign came out. Profits on these trucks is like 40% over cost there are deals to be had. Just have to be willing to play the same game they do. I helped my friend's mother get over 7k off a brand new Tacoma Sport. (and before you think that's not a big deal cuz it's just a Tacoma, understand that even Toyota never offers rebates on it)
Ford all day, Chevy all day. Doge all day. I’m brand loyal, Even though I have to spend 10k to bullet prof it. 😂😂😂 Like GM, Ford, or Doge is going to make the payments for you. Any of this Trucks would do whatever the other does!! Period!!!! Is all about what you prefer or an afford.
I agree. I'm a Chevy man but either Ford, ram or Chevy can do any of these jobs. Just stick to what you like. I like Chevy because they truly are more reliable and longer lasting.
I believe they made an incorrect statement in this video.....it is the half-ton 10 speed trans that was co-developed and NOT the HD 10 speed transmissions. TFL did a video at the GM plant during the reveal where the engineer explained the development of the Allison HD trans.
The 350 will out pull the 450. But, the 450 has bigger brakes, tighter turning radius, and feels more planted under load. The 450 is more about stability than power. It takes a performance hit due to the added curb weight over the 350.
its basically the same. 4.10 on the 350 4.30 on the 450 but the 450 has a taller tire so it equals out. crew cab teh 350 is rated to tow more than the 450. 450 has a much tighter turning radius approx 8 feet. 450 has larger rear brakes to help stop the heavier 19.5 wheels and commerical tires. f350 is limited to 99mph f450 limited to 87mph the only 450 rated higher than the 350 for towing (Both are 14,000 GVWR) is the unicorn regular cab 450 which ford has applied a 45300lb GCWR recomendation. allowing them to state best in class towing of 37,000 LBS. they are speical order only. F550 has a GCWR of 40,000lbs dispite 4.88 gears being available. ford says it has to do with duty cycles of teh buyer. meaning they dont expect you to tow maxed out in teh pickups everyday, so they rate them higher. where in the chasis cabs they rate them to be maxed out all day everyday for 10yrs or 250K miiles. (fords design lifespan for superduty)
Naw I wouldn’t say the same tires make a big difference in the ride technically they can handle more than the trucks tow rating cause they are light commercial.... gearing is higher better off the line power braking is slightly better bigger brake package and turn radius front end suspension slightly better
@@spin0491 I covered all of that in my comment...... f350 on 17 vs 450 on 19.5 is only an extra 60 rpm at 70mph. Basically the same overall ratio On the comment of tires. Yes the 450 tire is rated to handle more if you run it at 110 psi. But the rear axles are rated the same (9,900 lbs) so it's capacity you can't use, which is why the recommended tire pressure is 65. I was trying to keep the tire talk our of it. But basically if you buy a 450 you have to go to commercial tire shops. Discount tire can't mount them due to their flat bead design. Also you have like 3 tire choices, cheapest starting at $350 per tire. With the 17 you have tire choices, and you can get them fixed anywhere. 19.5 last about 30% longer, but grab road imperfections, can't be aired down for comfort, and are heavy. Ford uped the brake size due to the weight of the rims and tires. That is alot more rolling mass that has a resistance to stopping. Springs are exactly the same between the 2 trucks.

At 3:54 you can see the tow/haul light is on. I have run both L5P with the 6 speed and the new 10 speed and the hold back is way more aggressive with the 6 speed. GM needs better calibration for the down shifting with loads.
You never mentioned if you turned on the engine brake on the GMC. You did say you used it on the Ford. Otherwise great test! I agree the mirrors on the GMC should extend further out. The hood on the GMC is way too high for good visibility. Thanks for all your hard work. These tests you do are invaluable.

3rd Gen 6.7 PSD is really killing it with its 475/1050.... as long as the engine holds up long term they sure do have a winner!

If you break down in one of those computerized obsolescence chasers you'd better have some killer AAA. I've always wondered, what happens when they stop updating the android os that controls your a/c and brakes? And what's with the ground effect skirts?

You need the F350 super duty to tow the Pursuit 355 sport fisherman. The boat dealer told me the F250 is not heavy enough to maintain stability.
I'm curious to how a tuned/deleted version of one of the recent trucks would compare. Hmmm

Who cares
Agreed
I agree. A truck should be allowed to squat a certain amount for its max tongue weight. This would allow the suspension to get into that "sweet spot" for both ride and handling. Otherwise, it would be too heavily sprung, and have neither. Axle hop is a bitch on a slick curve.
Justin W. Disagree. They can function with squat but it needs to be controlled
they say they talk about squat because it makes teh headlights higher blinding traffic...... i have never understood it either.

what happened to the GMC over 4:00 to 4:05? It looks like it slide sideways while braking, maybe the camera angle. The Ford looks way more composed with the heavy load, like a little bit more planted over the road. God review as always.
I seen that too
Does the GMC not offer an engine break? You put it on in the Ford but not the GMC. Just curious
lgoss 326 I’m sure if it came equipped with it they would have used it. If they were trying to be sketchy, why mention it?
All the Duramax trucks come with the Exhaust Brake. So I don't understand why they didn't mention using it. I use mine even when I'm not towing. I think they should edit this video to say whether the GMC Exhaust Brake was used or not.
I was about to say the same thing. All Duramax engines comes with it in heavy duty form. Idk why it wasnt used. And im.not buying the Ford was that much faster than the GMC. I can take it being faster but not by that large a margin.
the engine brake was used on both. ford has "auto" and "on"
in the ford "auto" the computer determines how much engine brake to applay based on accelerator and brake input to try and hold a set speed that it thinks the driver wants.
Gm tries to protect you, Ford just goes "welp i told you not to but we can do it your way."
EDIT: exhaust brake.

Andre and Mr. Truck are the work horses of tfl. Mr. Truck has the experience and Andre has the work ethic and knowledge. Great video.
Thanks
I still have a hard time trusting Ford diesels long term. Great video.
It’s all about maintenance. You’d be surprised by all the people who cannot maintain a truck. I’ve got almost 500,000 miles on a 6.0.
Zack Zander That may be the case but did you bullet proof your 6.0 to get it to be that reliable? Out of the box, that would be next to impossible.
500k on a 6.0 with maintenance.... So your saying you didn't delete it, no head studs, and it's still on its first set of injectors and turbo?
Xxplicit the 6.7 powerstroke is the 2nd best powerstroke so it ok 👍
Yeah, but keep in mind, the 6.7 is the first actual Ford diesel and it has been incredibly reliable. I'd be surprised if the Ford 6.7 wasn’t shown to he the most reliable out of the three diesels in this segment.
Also, the 1995 through 2003 7.3 diesels were extremely reliable, but the 6.0 and 6.4 were disasters out of the box. Those are designed by International/Navistar though.
But when you hit the brakes doesn't it turn off the cruise control?
It does
You take your left index finger and you push the "RESUME" button.
I drive a 7.3 and I couldn’t imagine pulling 15k up that turnpike
Best truck channel on RUclips.
2.4mpg.... How long will it take to get it down to 0.0? You know, where it runs out of fuel before you even move an inch...
That’s why I bought the Ford 6.2 gasser. I’m not pulling 30,000# I pull 8-10,000 my point is the gassers gets the same mileage as the diesels now days just less torque
It would be interesting to for @TheFastLaneTruck to do a ride along of an 80k class 8 on this run. Just as a food for thought.
Plus the Ford should get an extra 25 points for its looks. That last side by side shot. Tells that story.
Looks are subjective, mate. For every guy who thinks the Ford looks better, there's gonna be another who thinks the GMC looks better.
Dave maybe so. But they are chevy guys who aren’t too thrilled. So there is that.
Good job just one question. Chevy truck have exhaust brake set or not you never said or showed.
This has to be bs!! A few months ago they tested the Duramax 2500 against the ram 3500 pulling 16000 lbs on the Ike it only had 2 brake application
I was wondering the same thing. No mention of the use of the exhaust brake on the gmc
It was on!
@@TFLnow damn it!! I should of waited to buy until you did the test!!! I will say my Duramax doesn't stop as well as my 15 cummins....
This is why I live in Florida with my F350 and mini excavator. That’s vacation weather not working weather ;)
Wow a few years ago TFL did the 2018 Ram and Ford with the same weight and they both got times around the same as the GMC in this test. Crazy that the new Powerstroke was over a minute faster!
Right!! 1 minute 27 seconds faster!!💪
The retracting running boards on the Ford is a great function. Especially when you go offroad.
They're also available on the GMC which they failed to mention.
These two are the best in the game so glad you did a little comparison of the two
I would have liked to see the equivalent Ram looked at as well.
@danturbo316 I'm glad I did, but I still think the 3.55 would do well matched up with the 10 spd.
am i the only one that thought it sounds crazy trying cruise control in the winter?
The engine break also
I agree. Makes no sense to run the cruise downhill in snow and ice carrying 30k pounds. Also they said they used the engine brake on the Ford after that, but wasn’t sure they did on the GMC, or at least I didn’t hear them say they used it.
Exactly
Nathan Miller why is it crazy to use the exhaust brake in poor weather conditions? It better than applying brake peddle because there is no potential for your wheels to lock up. That's the whole point of the feature
@@kyleroberts4079 when use a engine brake on ice you risk a jack knife from slowing the truck but not the trailer.
I’m going to assume more that more than half of you don’t know where the king ranch is. But if you ever get the chance you should take a tour. The headquarters is located in Kingsville Texas If you ever want to take a wildlife tour or something like that.
I would like to see this from the 250s and 2500 just because most of us are buying 250 and 2500’s but this is still awesome to see!
Videos of those two trucks are done.
Do you guys take temp into consideration when you compare different days on these runs? A winter run with much more dence air will be easier than a summer run.
Honestly makes me even more confident in my purchase, just picked up a 2020 f-350 powerstroke today. It's not a king ranch, it's and xl, and it has 4.10 gears but more to the point, I'm glad I chose a Ford after seeing this
Youl be sorry. 🤐
@@chadsteele1 doubt it
Just don't get in an accident.

I almost didn’t watch it
For real tho
Look at their videos from a couple of years ago when they were definitely Ford biased!
SakoSTW WY uhhh, I suggest you rewatch the older video's because they were DEFINITELY Ford biased!
John Doe I know I’ve been watching these guys for years and they always complain about things that most people don’t care about like the sag, trust me if I’m towing that much weight you better believe I’ll have airbags long before I tow that
This must have been filmed weeks ago. You can see the Rebel at 6:55, didn’t you guys trade that in for the 7.3?
Well they did mention Christmas songs.......so there is that
Great video guys! That ford is gorgeous! Not a fan of gm as they feel like driving a car and I like my TRUCK.
Sounded like they only used it on the F350 huh, Im assuming the GMC also has an exhaust break because my 2015 Chevy 3500 does.
These guys kill me with stupidity sometimes, but no one else is doing a comparable test.
matthewl67 yeah for real and it’s not like they don’t point out every feature when the do their first review. Just a large oversight for sure.
Derek McKinney - So does my 16 LML and my neighbors 2020 L5P.
Your Denali isn't fully loaded it doesn't have the optional upfitter switches
If the ford had a 4.10 axle it would have done even better with engine braking and faster going up
I’d be curious to see how true that is now that there is the 10 speed.
And 30 hp at 2800rpm is only 65lbft difference
GM 445hp@2800rpm= 835lbft
Ford 2019
450hp@2800= 844lbft
Ford 2020
475hp@2800= 890lbft
Ram HO Cummins
400hp@2800=750lbft
Ram with the 4.10 isnt going to win any race up the mountain. Off the line, it just out pulls the GM. After that the GM will walk it.
GM
910lbft x 4.61 x 3.42 = 14347lbft
Ram
1000lbft x 3.75 x 4.10 = 15375lbft
If hp dictated the amount of work to be done, semi trucks in Canada would need 1000hp engines to do the work we do.
1850lbft@1100=387hp
1850lbft@1200=422hp
1850lbft@1300=457hp
1850lbft@1350=475hp
1750lbft@1400=466hp
1750lbft@1500=499.6hp
1650lbft@1600=502hp
1550lbft@1700=501hp
The leverage(torque) is doing the work, only thing that is changing is the rate(speed) is being done at. Same applies with smaller engines
The 3.5HO EB has 450hp just like my 6.7 powerstroke and many semis. The EcoBoost would never do the work of my powerstroke and same goes for the powerstroke to the semi
450hp@5000=472lbft(EB)
450hp@2800=844lbft(PSD)
450hp@1900=1243lbft(dd13)
450hp@1400=1688lbft(Cat C15). It's the getting it moving that's the issue not maintaining it
@@jnk26 Wow, I never had it explained that way.
I like my running boards to not fold out the way. It saves a door ding in the parking lot.
I purchased the 2019 450 last week, love the truck. I fought with my self about that or the 2020 but the fuel pump and the high level of friction in the ten speed transmission scared me. I’ll let them work the bugs out then look at the 10 speed later after all the trial and error.
Hope you got a good deal the 20's are going to make it depreciate even more.
I would expect between 15-18K off MSRP (as 10K is the min discount you should be expecting on current model year truck you should expect.)
Yes it will affect trade-in value as people seak out the 2020 models on the used market and 2017-2019MY trade-ins begin to flood the used market as people upgrade.
Always could have negotiated "well this isn't how I would have ordered/optioned it but I suppose I could make it work for the right price."
Saw the same thing in 2017 when the last redesign came out. Profits on these trucks is like 40% over cost there are deals to be had. Just have to be willing to play the same game they do.

Awesome work as always guys!! Would love to see an F450 with the hammer down going up the Ike!!! Curious as to how it would compare
The 350 will out pull the 450. But, the 450 has bigger brakes, tighter turning radius, and feels more planted under load. The 450 is more about stability than power. It takes a performance hit due to the added curb weight over the 350.
I wish you would compare an F350 to an F450 towing
its basically the same.
4.10 on the 350 4.30 on the 450 but the 450 has a taller tire so it equals out.
crew cab teh 350 is rated to tow more than the 450.
450 has a much tighter turning radius approx 8 feet.
450 has larger rear brakes to help stop the heavier 19.5 wheels and commerical tires.
f350 is limited to 99mph f450 limited to 87mph
the only 450 rated higher than the 350 for towing (Both are 14,000 GVWR) is the unicorn regular cab 450 which ford has applied a 45300lb GCWR recomendation. allowing them to state best in class towing of 37,000 LBS. they are speical order only.
KoolCordell the 350 as tested in the video had a 3.55
Naw I wouldn’t say the same tires make a big difference in the ride technically they can handle more than the trucks tow rating cause they are light commercial.... gearing is higher better off the line power braking is slightly better bigger brake package and turn radius front end suspension slightly better
@@mattweeks2272 I know, I doubt OP wants a tow off between a 3.55 350 and a 4.30 450
@@spin0491 I covered all of that in my comment......
f350 on 17 vs 450 on 19.5 is only an extra 60 rpm at 70mph. Basically the same overall ratio
On the comment of tires.
Would like to see a comparison with the 7.3 gas motor to the diesel on the fords.
m1ll3r86 wouldn’t even be close.
Not enough towing capacity on the 7.3

Add in that they are both far easier to work on and clean then the word and far more comfortable seats. I will take the ram or the gmc any day. Thats based of my life and real world experience
Ford all the way
Cuz u gotta pay more to death wobble! P.o.s ford
A little disappointed in the outcome but I am still a GMC fan and this was a great video.
This new Powerstroke is a BEAST!!! 💪
Was tow haul used on the GMC or just cruise control going down hill?
Traditionally in these videos they talk about how they “always use tow haul mode.”
Really reaching in hopes for an excuse for GM aye? Well shit, @5:20 shows it's actived. Traffic going to be asked next?
Engine brake was not used
@@Ryan40272 imagine caring so much about an innocent question that you assign motivation
We of course used the Exhaust Brake on both trucks. We used it on the GMC and the Automatic setting on the Ford.
The Fast Lane Truck yeah sure, next time put it in your video so it’s more believable. 🤥
Dana Simeona imagine getting heated over a RUclips video about trucks
Niles Nibogie not heated here looking for a fair comparison, imagine that.
The Fast Lane Truck it’s funny you don’t mention that during the test though.
The GMC has an exhaust brake as well yet you guys didn't mention using it. Was it on during the downhill portion? Might have cut down on those 9 brake applications...
Exhaust brake was used on both trucks.
