I can't speak for everyone back and save for mysel. I kind of ran from video games to table top. It's more of a social experience, There arent any dlcs or exclusive content. There's no software limiting what you can and cannot do. No safe states or anything like that so every decision is final. To me it's an upgrade to gaming experience because it's only limited by my imagination.

I left video games a really long time ago but revisit for nostalgia. I always get bored with the games very quickly for the same reason you cite. TTRPGs are indeed limitless

@thepickleddragon8590 I think what I like is finding uses for spells that were probably not intended. Like I once used dancing lights the cantrip to save my party. And I also like being a bard.

@thepickleddragon8590 I'm getting into this hobby at the age of 30. I actually enjoy area control spells more than damage spells. Yeah fireball is cool. But Is cloud of daggers is where it's at. Dungeons have a lot of choke points. I'd like to make my enemies pay before they get into my area.

ttrpg golden age? maybe for DnD, but not for ttrpgs. 5e is the single worst system i have ever played (out of only like 10, but still), its supremacy only took away attention from far more deserving games and tourists don't make for good community. if anything i'd call this 'age' incredibly mixed (you have stuff like white wolf being crippled for no good reason and DnD in general, but pathfinder 2e being released). the death of DnD (farfetched but let me dream) might actually usher in an actual golden age.
