Back in school I had a very religious woman tell me I shouldn't play D&D because it was devil worshiping. She was quite serious. I asked if she'd ever played, seen anyone play, or knew anything about the game. Nope. Her minister told her it was evil, and she believed every word. She even directed me to a book about the evils of D&D. It was only a few pages long. I read it in the bookstore because there was no way I was going to pay the author by purchasing that mess. And, it was indeed a mess of a "book".

@@jimb9063 I'm a realist as far as philosophy of science, and structural realist; but, the "no miracles" argument is good enough, as far as I'm concerned, to suggest that science does inform us about an objective reality, at least in terms of that reality is structured.
It has gotten pretty weird in academia these days. When they said "interdisciplinary" in the old days, it meant someone had trained in both disciplines. Now, it seems to mean that someone in a "______ Studies" department is writing about some discipline in which they have no training at all...apparently, they just "identify" with the subject matter, and away they go.... The wild part is that the departments that actually focus on legitimate knowledge production, and more importantly colleges of graduate studies are just going along with it all nowadays.

My eldest daughter graduated a couple of years ago. She studied nutrition and diatetics. Lots of biochemistry. Felt a little bit like Richard Feynman's Dad, she couldn't explain things to an idiot like me either!
From what she said and the work that I happened to see, they seemed primed to look out for "alternative truths" rather than to embrace them.
Maybe a branch of the sciences which is more used to trends and fads than others? I don't know.
I studied War Studies, it's far easier saying what you like and get away with it in humanities!
Looking back, it was reasonably interdisciplinary. The History folk sat in on our lectures once or twice a week, we sat in on Economics and Philosophy lectures, where we apparently represented the Military Industrial Complex, and were only there for Nietzsche respectively!
My former hall of residence seems to be an art gallery now, and the college may need to merge with one of the other London colleges. It's still called the Department of War Studies though, and is not the Ministry of Peace as yet!

Tolken was a nature loving history nerd in his time. How does that fit with being far- right? Tolkien never got into the policies of societies in middle earth. The Shire was depicted as the Idealic Society. A mayor was the highest position of authority and most people were left to their own affairs. There was an upper and a lower class amongst Hobbits but there was never a large class divide depicted. Tolkien was anti-industry as shown in the scouring of the shire. If I had to use political terms I'd say Tolkien was some type of peleo-Anarchist. Which is not right wing. I don't know how true that is. And if I'm incorrect, I don't mean any disrespect to the Author that has marveled countless people over the years.

Lighten you mood up, Pickled! To be fair there is an overlap in the ideological Venn diagram between those with an interest in Anglo-Saxon & old Norse language / culture and a minority with extreme right wing beliefs.
As Tolkien is associated with Anglo-Saxon & Old Norse linguistics and mythology a liking for his works could well be a common interest in that minority, but to claim that it's a strong correlation is just plain delusional, it's a small minority who just happen to like something that a famous author made his specialty.
