I really enjoyed this video. Yet another example of why TGV's content goes above and beyond any other RUclipsr's. The history of wristwatches is so fascinating, and going from the early days of converted pocket watches to today's social media fueled status symbols is just so crazy to think about.

The book "Longitude" by Dava Sobel, which you briefly show in this video, is why I'm into watches. I was in the history section of a used book store years ago when I noticed this tiny little hard covered book. It was so small that I was compelled to grab it just to see what it was. The blurb on the dust cover sounded interesting so I bought it. It turned out to be a brilliant book. Even my sister, who has never been on time for anything, thought it was great. I grew up around boats and I learned how to navigate without electronics, but I had never given the problem of longitude any thought because accurate timepieces are something that we all take for granted today. Everyone who likes watches really should read that book. Your appreciation for timepieces will grow exponentially.

Brian De Palma is truly the most underrated American director of the latter 20th Century. Using cinema as an entry-point to discuss wristwatches as a status symbol is really clever. Have you read Paul Fussell’s book, “Class”? He covers the wristwatch but the section on the prole jacket gape is more frequently quoted.

Another amazing deep dive! Your analysis of Scarface is spot on. I love how you touch on the fact that for all his flash, it's ultimately a facade to hide how empty and isolated he slowly becomes. I'll catch heat for saying this but I think that imagery is really relevant to watch enthusiasts who get lost in the weeds when it comes to chasing the iconic brands, including myself. I'd love to see more of these deep dives!

@@diydad7704 thank you for the link. I recognise many of the names on the site. While it's great that watch design is making a resurgence in the UK, I wouldn't call the companies I saw 'watch makers'. The majority design the watches and cases in the UK, but manufacturing and assembly takes place abroad, and utilises bought in movements. There are some really nice pieces, but it's a stretch to call them British watches.

Fantastic intro, TGV! Excellent to see Hugo popped in to say hello.
The observation that you have made that many personalities (that have become either infamous or famous for trying to appear infamous) adopt looks that they THINK are worn by the posh and sophisticated have made those very looks and products completely cliché and not sophisticated. The average Rolex wearer today probably does not care or know the history or capability of the piece they are wearing. They wear it simply to APPEAR affluent. Making it all the more LESS desirable as the cycle continues until it is recognized as a tool, used by those that actually utilize them, make them desirable again and the process starts again.
Absolutely wonderful historical analysis. Thank you for such a excellent video, yet again, my friend.
