Saying that Zenith can't homage the Daytona is silly. They used to make the Daytona movement for years, so if anyone has the right to do so, it would be Zenith.
But it's not an homage. The Chronomaster Sport is its own thing quite distinct (and superior IMHO) to the Daytona.
I agree, his take on this was dumb. ONLY reason he's OK with the Tudor GMT is because it's part of the Rolex group, and he's clearly a Rolex fanboi.

I don't even feel like zenith feels like a homage to Daytona. My point is, "copying" is very subjective. Same point as any rectangle or candy bar form factor phone are iphones.
My hot take; homages have no effect on market share because they appeal to different consumers. Nobody ever got a call from a Rolex AD telling them their steel Submariner has arrived, only to reply "You know what? I just bought an Invicta Pro Diver, and I'm good with that".
I’d be good with a properly build homage, so long as it’s not a 1:1 clone and has its own identity and qualities. I find it disgusting that people still feel excitement in being at the mercy of a company erroneously portrayed as a totally charitable samaritan. They’re greed-driven market leaders with a robot built mass produced lineup that offers little to no luxury aspects. They’re the most easily accessible and plentiful watches on the premium market, and Rolex only takes the scarcity. I’ll save my money, time and integrity, thank you very much.

Although that's broadly true, I think there's an important caveat. I was saving up for a 114270 Explorer 1, and bought myself a Smiths Everest to fill the gap in the meantime. It scratched the itch so well that for the price of the Rolex I can now get myself a Speedmaster and keep the Smiths - so I've found that what is essentially an homage did indeed tip the balance of where I thought I had the most to gain by placing my money.
The original isn't just competing with the homage, it's competing with the other places you can spend your money if the homage satisfies you. If your grails are a Cartier tank and a Seamaster, maybe a Hamilton Ventura satisfies the dressy Cartier itch enough for you to buy the Seamaster instead.
The people who hate homages are people who can even tell the watch is an homage of another watch. Most people who don't care about watches have no clue if your watch is an original design or not.
@@lapelcelery42 Something similar happened to me with the Railmaster and the Explorer. I wanted both, because I like the dial style. I bought the Railmaster first and over time came to he conclusion that they look too similar and it makes no sense to have both.I decided to buy different looking watches in the future.
I wore my Omega Seamaster (the lame product placement one from Pierce Brosnan) for 20 years every single day, no matter if I just went to university, work, sport or moving furniture and working on stuff. I don't care about the scratches and nicks at all, because this watch was on my wrist during every important thing that happened in my life the last 25 years.

But back then it was not product placement in the first place. It was a decsion by the costume designer. Product placement in itself came later but it also wasn't lame at all. Without it Omega wouldn't be where they are nowadays.

The Zenith Chronomaster being a bad "homage" watch of the Rolex Daytona was easily the WORST take in this video. The two watches are completely nothing alike and not even in the same price range if we're really talking about it's true market value (you're not going to get a Daytona for retail let's just be real here). The Zenith is a great overall alternative to the Daytona without it being like a cheap homage copy.

Nothing wrong with that, and full kudos to Rolex for maintaining such presence on a majority of watches you would never wear if it wasn't a Rolex. To each their own, we all have different tastes. Rolex is a high quality watch, just a majority of the models underwhelm me in design.
The bond SMP is now an icon as it has been the Bond watch for 30 years and two different Bonds. Way longer than the Rolex.
And, it is one of the few divers with its own design language that doesn’t looks like it is a copy or homage of the Rolex sub.
Also I don't think Omega would have had the growth it's enjoyed since the mid 90s without Bond. Actually the entire watch industry should thank Bond.

Bond’s character wore a Casio in one of the movies. I own both Rolex and Omega (and Casio) and don’t give a rodent’s posterior what a character in a fictional movie wears on his wrist.
Let's not forget, Fleming actually described Bond's watch as an explorer too, not a Sub lol. So the movies never got it right.

That's actually not true, Bond wore a digital Seiko G757 which looks very similar to the Casio AE1200. The Seiko has become very rare and is now worth north of $1,000 so a lot of people have looked to the casio as an inexpensive alternative and nicknamed it "The Bond"

Clearly the case here. I hoped to see a nuanced discussion, and what I got was some 15years-old-level of confirmation bias "Daniel Craig wore a Rolex" lmao.
Quartz are underappreciated. A good quartz is better than a mediocre automatic. So much more goes in to making a watch than just the movement.
The cost of servicing of a low-cost automatic movement makes it an unsustainable option. It’s cheaper to chuck it in the bin and install a new movement.
I think the issue with discussion on homage watches is that they are probably not directly focusing on Europe and north America where people earn a lot more money and consider the AliExpress brands for example like Pagani design and San Martin as cheap. For people like me in Pakistan (and India even maybe) the difference in prices between a homage speedmaster and the seiko speedtimer is a lot. Most people here earn less 150 USD per month. When you're earning those amounts of course you'll save like 70% by choosing an AliExpress watch over let's say a budget seiko.

I’m with Jenni about the Zenith homage. Yes, they are very similar, but far from a 1 to 1 copy. Crown guards, chrono buttons, case design, dial colors, all these components make it absolutely distinguishable from a Daytona. The proportions are there and they are very similar, but it is a different watch, almost like the Tudor GMT vs Rolex Pepsi. Well, given the history I believe Zenith has earned the right to do it. Your guest is giving more of an emotional opinion rather than an objective one (in my humble opinion). Great work. Loved the video.

James Bond did wear a Rolex before the Omega but the Omega came from Q branch and became a integral part of Bond's kit not just a watch.
As for quartz and Grand Seiko, I used to be anti quartz as well until I learned about the 9F movement. My SBGP007 Captain America has a fifty year service interval and is accurate to five seconds per year plus its all hand built and finished. The 9F movement self checks its temperature 540 times per day and regulates itself to maintain accuracy, what does your automatic movement do ?

I have a 9F GS and love it for that reason: talk about grab and go! You never need to do anything but put it on and take it off - and of course it's gorgeous.
Putting it down for being quartz is like putting down an Aston Martin because it has a gasoline engine, "just like" the cheapest cars on the market.

Calling it an homage is tantamount to claiming that literally every single tricompax chronograph "in that price range" is homaging the Daytona.
Totally agree! No idea why people think it’s similar. I’m not a chronograph fan but aesthetically the Zenith is much more attractive. Nicer dial and sub dials, better looking pushers, not even close.

You know the old saying about owning a boat… “the two best days are the one when you buy it and the day when you sell it”. Such is similar with aspiring for that grail watch.
I completely (respectfully) disagree with the Chronomaster (homage) vs Daytona take. The Daytona design aesthetic is built on past Zenith architecture. They look alike because Rolex didn’t overhaul the movement design when they went in-house from Zenith. And it of course makes sense for Zenith to evolve to a ceramic bezel (which seems to be what people are outraged about).
My hot take: if offered a Chronomaster Sport or Daytona at retail (resale aside, ie I could never sell either), I would buy the Chronomaster without hesitation. It is a superior movement, has just as good proportions, has as much or more history in its name, and I prefer the Tri-color dial.
I really do think that anyone who chooses the Daytona is only doing to do the resale value, or the name at 12:00.

Well said. And fundamentally there are only so many things you can do with a chrono. Zenith actually does different color subdials which I don’t recall Rolex ever doing.
I own 3 Rolex, and the Daytona will never be one of them.
The retail price is absurd. I understand it uses a completely different movement and needs a different manufacturing process, so it needs to be more expensive... But 15K USD for one is bonkers. You can get the Sky Dweller with its own movement which has a month indicator, date window, dual timezones, GMT functionality, and annual calendar for the same price.

I don’t understand the Bond take because they’re pretty much only talking about the more aggressive luxury product placement of the Daniel Craig movies and not the passive, utilitarian placement seen in the Brosnan movies. Omega also supplied/s watches to the British armed forces, even after they renounced Rolex for their high prices many many years ago. I think the only example where the product placement was too aggressive was the train scene in Casino Royale.

Everybody comparing Omega to Tudor is wrong and stupid. Omega competes with Rolex, not Tudor; their finishing, design, and movement tech is on par with or even superior to those of Rolex (specifically referring to movement tech in this case, i.e. Omega's movements are even better than those of Rolex, especially in terms of magnetic field resistance).

Rolex makes some of the best tool and work watches in the business and have set many standards that many watch companies follow to this day.
The prices for MOST rolex's are way too overpriced, 10k for an Explorer as only 4k for a Ranger, 15k for a submariner, 5k for a blackbay 58, up to 50k for a daytona, 10k for a Zenith el primero.
Rolex is overhyped.... and really, they created it. lack of stock, ignorant dealers, wait lists.... then there is the grey market, doubling and sometimes tripling the msrp.
I think my problem is that I want to buy an Explorer to use as its intended, to go hiking, rock climbing, and well its going to get dirty and scratched..... but im not paying 10k for it and having to wait for it... thats stupid... I'll leave that to the faux crowd who want to walk around stating to everyone that they have a rolex on their wrist...
Interesting comment, some of which I agree with, but you seem to have countered your own arguements after making them.
"Rolex is overpriced" yet then you say they sell on the grey market for triple the retail.
I know this is the case for some models, but then Rolex could easily double the price and still sell them.
Compared to other brands, they are reasonably priced.
Products tend to be priced by what people are willing to pay, rather than any other factor.
"Overhyped" The word mean making exaggerated claims, then you list the negatives of the retail situation.
Lack of stock is due to excessive demand, as are wait lists, there is no big Rolex conspiracy out there.
Lastly the comment that exposes some negativity toward owners of the watches which is ridiculous. I know a few people with really nice watches, myself included, and they never walk about posing them.
Only wannabe clowns with fake watches seem to do that sort of nonsense.
(Parting tip, if you want to go hicking/exploring, get a Casio G-shock, the Explorer is a piece of jewellery)
- If James Bond were real he would wear an Omega these days not a Rolex. In the U.K. Rolex are often considered too ostentatious whereas Omega are understated class.

Cool. I have 7.25" wrist and wear 32mm older Olympic mechanical to a 45mm Orient Mako XL. I think a lot of people limit themselves by restricting themselves to certain dimensions!? Just my opinion.😊
Right there with you but I will say 39mm is my minimum and I do prefer something larger but as always it depends on the watch.

Love this format. Good points throughout. I have a few thoughts.
1. The Omega Bond connection. Yes it is commercial. But if you look at the SMP, the Bond watch is now an icon with 30 years of history and 2 different actors. In that regard, it is the Bond watch for way longer than Rolex, as Connery was the only Bond who wore Rolex. The Bond watch for the Roger Moore era was a Seiko digital.
2. Homages. To a certain extent, everything is an homage to something. Pepsi bezel, jubilee or oyster bracelet, 3, 6, 9 Arabic’s. All are Rolex looks that have seeped into the design language of other brands. So when a brand has its own signature design elements, such as, again, the Omega Bond SMP good for them but like it or not, a lot of divers are to one extent or another, Rolex sub homages.
3.smaller watches. Yes, a big man can wear a small watch. There is a famous picture of Muhammad Ali wearing a tiny Cartier. I blame Arnold and Stallone for the big watch trend of the 90s and beyond.
4. I have my own related hot take. 90% of Watch idiot savants would improve their style by going down a couple of mm in Watch case size. So if the wear 44, go down to 42, or 40, or even 38. Unless you are a huge man with giant hands and wrists, you don’t need a watch much larger than 40 mm.
Not only did Roger Moore wear a Rolex Submariner in his first two James Bond movies, but the Rolex he wore in Live and Let Die was also a gadget watch from Q Branch (a movie prop).
You discredited your entire post by saying that Connery was the only Bond to wear a Rolex. That’s obviously not true.
The Submariner was not the first dedicated dive watch. The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms was the first one. So if dive watches are hommages they are to the FF, not to the Sub.

The first watch I ever bought was a Gruen Precision, but I don't know the model number. I was so proud of it. I showed it to my dad and while tapping on the crystal, I said to him, "Gruen. Precision." He tapped on his Timex and said, "Timex. Approximate."
Not likely. The Dr. No scenes in Jamaica were filmed first and the Rolex can be seen on Connery's wrist. Later the film unit returned to London for the scenes filmed at Pinewood Studios so it is much more likely Connery was still wearing the Rolex when his Casino introduction was filmed. We can't see what he is wearing at that point.

The White Birch is amazing quality, technically innovative, and probably the best buy out there right now, for the money.
Rolex went down in my estimation when a youtube watch repairer told why he was repairing a watch a lady damaged in the sea, Rolex refused to repair it. The watch was her fathers, that’s disgraceful for a so called luxury or as some like a to call Rolex ‘a tool’ brands. Omega are better finish, build, accuracy
and service.

👍 icon in bold letters. Some folks act as if there weren't any other brands used. Nonetheless, Omega is the brand that stands out the most. To me when you talk about a luxury tool watch it doesn't really get better than Omega IMO. That's why I think it suits the character best. If 007 simply needed a more luxury watch Rolex might be the better choice.

In Ian Fleming's early 007 novels Bond wears a Rolex. The only reason Omega is in the movies is because they paid a lot of money for it. Rolex does not need the extra exposure as they have a waiting list while Omega watches sell with a discount! A Rolex holds its value over time while you have to be prepared to take a loss on Omega.
@@iankuah8606Which shows that your knowledge of Omega’s involvement in Goldeneye is less than my cat’s. Omega have a history with the military going all the way back to the Second World War. Rolex doesn’t. James Bond is a former naval officer and it was at the behest of Goldeneye’s costume designer, Lindy Hemming, that Bond start wearing a Seamaster. Why did she make this suggestion? Because her father had served in the Royal Air Force and actually knew men serving in the Royal Navy and military intelligence who swore by their Omegas. So sadly you’re wrong. When Bond was created, Rolex was no more prominent than Seiko.

Had a good year in 2002 and bought an Omega 300M, black with (non-skeletal) sword hands for $1,700. Still love it today. Submariners and Explorer II were going for $4,000-$4,500 then. I liked the style of the 300M best, but it was close. Granted, the $2,000 Seamaster is now a $6,000 watch, the $4,000 Explorer II is now a $10,000 watch, and the $4,500 Submariner is now an $11,000 watch ... Oh well, my 'relationship' is still intact and the significance of that year is still nicely memorialized. While not a slave to brand, I was clearly shopping for a status watch then. Today ... 10-20k watches? Pass. There's 'splashing out,' but ...damn!
Brands like Rolex aren't watch brands. They're design houses for others to copy. If they were a watch brand you could actually buy one for a reasonable price. Thanks but pass. I'd rather buy watches I can afford. Homages are the only reason the watch hobby exists. Otherwise it would be a few rich people buying diamond encrusted watches.
That last one was painful! It really depends on where you are in your collecting journey. When I first started, my budget was tight, so I stuck with Seiko, Orient, and Casio. However, after falling into the rabbit hole of RUclips watch reviews, I took the plunge and bought a Helm Vanuatu, which introduced me to the world of microbrands and homage watch. Now, whenever I'm tempted to purchase a San Martin, Zelos, Baltic, Lorier, or Christopher Ward timepiece, I've set a rule for myself: I add it to my basket and wait 6-12 months before deciding if I'm truly ready to part with my watch fund and reset or if I should save it for my dream Rolex, Omega, or Grand Seiko.
People who buy Homages simply dont have the money for big(ger) brands and therefore not a threat for big brands in any way.
But they'll grow their love for bigger brand watches and are potential customers once they can afford them.
Its really a non issue, if you like the watch then fine ............... its watch snobs that mock people who buy pagani.
GS uses a very traditional and timeless design. Quality never goes out of style, but if one is looking for the latest "hot" design that won't last, GS is probably not the way to go. I happen to love the GS design in which they use their dial acumen to differentiate their models.

Disagree. Many Rolexs, Omegas, etc., stick to their decades-old design and don't suffer from this. There's just something so sterile about GS.
Why do many countries, governments, companies, universities, philanthropists, think tanks, etc etc all chase a potential hydrogen solution? Certainly they're aware of the cost issues, and inefficiencies etc. Sorry, it's geopolitical. Not free market. Indeed it's freedom from what could be considered bad actors. Hydrogen has the potential to be the great equalizer. Small underdeveloped counties able to extract hydrogen and advanced counties as well all seeking a solution away from fossil fuel and materials mining. Just "Google it". 😁
Grand Seiko's design is not just traditional, it's souless. Rolex, Omega, AP, all use very classic and traditional designs, yet they evoke emotion

New > Vintage. But vintage design was more original, daring and interesting. It also has a cool factor that is difficult replicate with a new watch. A vintage Sub with blue jeans and a white t-shirt is just about coolest combo possible.

Disagree with the Zenith Chronomaster Sport comment. You could argue that the bracelet is a copied Rolex Oyster.....maybe bezel too close to Daytona. I own the white version. If you look through the history of Zenith, you will see as much or more resemblance to Zenith's own watch history.....including the bezel. The triple color sundials are unique to Zenith. I also wear my watch often on the Zenith blue strap. That combination will never get confused for a Daytona by anyone that's into watches. And yes........the fact that the Daytona originally used the Zenith movement also does count for something.
Fun fact Sean Connery having a rolex in his first james bond movie was...
"On the first day of filming in Jamaica the director Terence Young realized that the prop department had forgotten to give Connery a watch. What happened next is a bit unclear. Either Young gave Connery his own Rolex Submariner with a black leather strap, producer Albert "Cubby" Broccoli gave his, or a Royal Navy diver who was part of the film crew was the source. Casio Duro, a Rolex-esque watch aesthetically for $50 and has a quartz movement-I think the best tribute watches often feature quartz and feel like smarter buys, unless you truly love and desire the authentic, pricy watch it is a homage to (it takes a very appealing watch for someone to throw down thousands, unless they are upper class/rich!). Quartz isn’t to be despised, look at the Cartiers which feature quartz and have been worn by Muhammad Ali and other famous people in history
The hot take on micros is interesting. Since I don't live in Switzerland, Germany, Japan (/Malaysia), or PRC, if I want to honor and support local watchmakers, I HAVE to embrace microbrands. Further, my Portland, OR-based Vero Open Water Broadway LE is HARDLY a wanna be good watch; it IS a great watch...easily the equal of Sinn. Oh, and it's from a brand based in my home town. Similarly, my Dufrane Waterloo is a great watch as well; made in Austin, TX and a solid piece.
I've purposely chosen to be as local as possible on all of my purchases, including watches. My "this year" target is a Weiss, with even the movement largely made in the US. After Weiss, you get into real money to buy domestically, so I'll be saving up for quite a while...RGM comes immediately to mind, and I wish I could afford a Keaton Myrick, but I'm afraid that ship has sailed.
Yeah, I also have a hand made mechanical watch made by my local watchmaker (who used to work at Patek). It's unique, durable, and fantastic, as he made everything by hand...
Yes, that's IMO very good reason to buy from a microbrand. And btw. those Vero Broadway watches looks gorgeous, very tasty, functional design. 👍
Another thing is, not everyone is getting watch from microbrand as a filer. It's bit stupid idea from original hot take is to assume, everyone, who buys from from microbrand, is just drolling for >$5K USD watch and doesn't have a financial discipline. Lot of times that can be quite rational idea to get collection of say 4 different quality watches for various occasions instead of single big brand name watches. Not to mention maintenance costs / unless you break some unique part, like signed crown or special bezel, then movement job on ETA, Selita, Seiko or Miyota movement can be often done locally for a fraction of service cost for big brands.
My friend has a Pagani Root Beer. It cost about £120 and it's more accurate than his Tudor Pelagos LHD! Only thing is the text on the bezel is a kind of weird pink colour.

Sure Tudor Pepsi is thicker, bezel is thinner, hands are different, not sure about the lume.
Dude, Zenith CMS is also thicker, pushers arent screw-down, sub-dials are different in colour, and the movement runs entirely on a different timing mechanism!
You cant give one a pass while throwing judgement on the other. If anything, the CMS embodies Zenith's originality more so than the Tudor Pepsi embodying Tudor's attempt to be "non-Rolex". That is even assuming that Tudor is trying to not be Rolex-lite.

I buy Pagani and Addiesdive because I get more bang for my buck (sapphire, 10-30 ATM, screw-down crown) comparing to Seiko or Orient, and the designs are timeless.
I have been wearing my Tudor submariner pretty much every day since my father got it for me in 1978. I love all the scratches but then it gets serviced every 5 or so years and come back looking new! Also fun! Then new scratches! Thanks for the great videos!

The Nomos strap is not a NATO strap because it attaches to the lugs rather than running underneath the watch head.
I don't hate quartz (my Full Metal CasiOak is 🔥) but I buy mostly automatic watches because I have a really over-the-top fancy watch winder display case for my watches and I'll be damned if I'm not going to use it 😅 I tend to avoid manual wound watches for the same reason.
I have and wear both Rolex and Omega. Forget the influence of Bond, Omega make superior movements and at least equal in finish. They simply build and more importantly make watches available. People chase what they can't have and that makes Rolex more desirable and feel more special. Genius marketing but id rather spend 4k on a pre owned speedmaster than 20k on a pre owned daytona or £3500 on a pre owned seamaster than £9000 on a pre owned sub.

I love the scratches comment - wearing your favorite watch(es) daily doesn't necessarily equate to being careless with them. It's so funny to hear people talk about scratches as marks of pride or marking a memory of some sort. For every story about a scratch coming from some heroic act, there are a hundred that came from a seatbelt on a flight from Buffalo to Cleveland lol.
Awesome takes! I was able to purchase my most desired watch (BB58) but found that I rarely wore it for fear of smashing it on things. I forced myself to wear it for two weeks straight but didn’t enjoy it. After two years I sold it. That experience taught me something about myself…luxury (entry or otherwise) is not for me. I have more fun with more “affordable” watches (sub $1000 for me). That said I do have a quartz Grand Seiko that I love and rarely wear and a Sinn U50 that I love and rarely wear. Lol I clearly have the disease 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I was saving for the same watch, a BB58, but opted out after a while for the same reason. I would be scared to death of breaking it, loosing it or someone stealing it. Mostly because I wouldn't be able to easily replace it. That's why I also go for "cheaper" watches. I love my Steinharts, yes they're homages, but they are much easier to replace should anything happen and I'm not constantly worrying about it.
Rolex is a great marketing company that happens to make good watches.😅
Most of my watches are vintage 36 to 38mm I only own 1 quartz watch (a cheap Titan) and i use it to keep accurate time to set the rest of my watches. But there is nothing wrong with them. I love the Grand Seiko Quartz watch, I think it gives anyone the ability to purchase a great watch.

My dream watch is a Cartier Santos. I could save enough money for that watch over a 2/3 year period.
However it is and will stay a fact that that watch represents to me a huge chunk of money.
For a person like me, spending 8000 euros in one go on 1 watch (and after that wearing it) is a far bigger psychological burden then spending 8 x 1000 euros.
This has nothing to do with a lack of discipline. For people with a lower income spending big is just more difficult even when they have saved up enough.

I think Rolex make beautiful, classic watches and their watch quality is among the best available. Omega make very well made watches with fantastic quality automatic movements. Swiss watches are the best in terms of design innovation and quality. One of the Swiss brands is Tissot. Tissot has an amazing pioneering watch making history. They created the first Swiss watch making school. Their reputation for making watches with precision timing and quality are second to none (excuse the pun). They are watch makers that are as competitively innovative as Rolex and Omega. Considering all this, the price of their watches are a bargain.

Quartz watches are great 🥰 My first “higher-end” watch is a GS quartz and I love it. Generally thinner and lighter than mechanical watches and the reliability is amazing.
Most Spring Drive models are still way over my budget and too big and heavy for me but hopefully I’ll find and own one some day 😊
Side note on the GS quartz models: one thing I love about them is the simplicity of the designs. It’s amazing how well GS makes simple dials, and none of the official images online do them justice. I stopped by the Wako Ginza store for the first time when I got my GS and to my surprise, it was the simplest dials that wowed me the most when held in hand 🙂
Great video, I agree with the majority of your responses to the hot takes. Regarding the bigger guys wearing smaller watches, I think the classic example is Tony Soprano and his 36mm Gold Day Date.

Buying only Rolex because there‘s the Rolex logo on the watch: Yes and no. A lot of people just buy Rolex because of the name and they wouldn‘t buy beautiful and technically perfect other watches only because there is no Rolex in their name. But some Rolex watches are so iconic that I love them for their perfect and timeless design. To be honest, most of the new Rolex are too shiny for me. I prefer aluminium bezels and vanilla indices and I‘m not a big fan of most of the Rolex colors. That being said there are as many reasons not buying a Rolex as buying one and I‘d never claim that all watch lovers only buy Rolex due to the brand name itself.
This was such a great show... There were so many matters that were philosophical. Loved it. I'd like to comment about a couple of them. I know it will get lost in the batch but it will help your algorithm! First up: scratches.
Today, I was at a home improvement store. I saw a gentlemen at the self-checkout getting ordinary things. Wearing ordinary clothing. But I liked his watch. I asked "I love your watch, may I ask what brand it is?". He replied "It's an A P"... I was like "I don't know that brand...." He gave me a closer look:
Audemars Piguet. I believe it was the ROYAL OAK SELFWINDING CHRONOGRAPH model. Which is about $38,000 dollars.
So yes, it's going to get scratched. He's probably old money and probably has more of it than God. He was somewhere in his upper 40's maybe 50's. He loves watches obviously. And he's wearing it. It's not in an oxygen-free display case at home. He's enjoying it.
Second: Homage watches. I agree with Kai about buying watches that are 1:1 copies of an icon. But I think it's a very subjective thing. While I think there is a similarity between the Rolex Daytona and Zenith Chronomaster Sport, I completely disagree that it's a copy. They are in the same category. I just see too many differences. But there are much more obvious copies...
Heck, I saw a Timex that looks so much like a Audemars Piguet. From a short distance, you wouldn't notice. But the similarity is certainly there. Maybe it wasn't intentional. Good design is timeless. But I wouldn't pay top dollar for an obvious copy. Get the original or something significantly less if you just love the style..... It's a watch after all...
Not sure where u get your info from, Daniel Craig is a self confessed omega fan boy outside of the bond franchise, and wore an omega in knifes out too. Of course he loves watches so why not have a Rolex too.
Yes Rolex was referenced in Ian Fleming’s novels but could also be said Rolex was different watch company back then, utilitarian like, now they are less so.
Where as omega has worked with the British military more than Rolex (in reality not in novels) with out them the RAF would have struggled in ww2, and omega supplied the army and navy too, so all adds up to possibly being the “real” bond watch.
Rolex fans might moan about omega product placement. However, Rolex was practically founded on marketing and stretching truths - all power to them as they still have a good product too, but try not to moan when others do it too
Yup, their confirmation bias and cherry picking of information was quite weak on this one. Rolex is clearly the more aggressive marketer, and technically this isn't even a problem, because as you said their quality is great.
However, then they talk about scratches and treating their rolex like an egg, hence the picture of an over invested fanboy is quite complete.
Omega Seamaster Professional 300M with a white dial is THE aesthetically perfect watch ever.

Zenith is the one who kind of made that dial layout popular with early el primero movements, daytona was a nobody back then, at least compared to how curently things stand. All their El primero chronographs have very similar dial, not cuz they want a piece of daytona cake but cuz that is how they always made them
My view of Omega...Love them.. But don't love many of their modern watches.. Don't care who they affiliate with, but for me, the best watch in the Universe is the Speedy (mine is 1861), so I can't ever hate on them.. Rolex on the other hand ... I have this unstoppable hatred and I don't know why hahah (nothing to do with being an Omega fan boy).... honestly my Speedy was bought recently for £3750 and it is the best watch I have ever worn.. for MANY reasons

some watches that transcend time keeping be it looks, history or, beauty in function. Some examples include the Submariner and Speedmaster. One can certainly question the Grand Seiko line as a whole but, to me, the Snowflake is one of those transcendent watches.
You cannot argue on Rolex quality, I own a 1970 Rolex Explorer and it’s exactly the same age as me and it looks still like new unlike me lol

I have 2 small takes on :
- Mechanical vs Quartz : there are people who need 'correct' time always and we watch enthusiast 'need' to agree that Quartz is more accurate than mechanical (even Metas) with less character.
- Isn't the point of Luxury products they are overpriced (because of Luxury) and maybe as a result the better retain value (mostly). The good point is there are great mechanical watches out there at affordable prices.

I can get behind the Paul Newman Daytons because he was real and did own a Daytona. I remeber when I bought my first Omega SMP back in 2002 they had the James Bond edition with the 007 and the spiral eye thing on the dial and thought who the hell would buy that, I went with the what is now called the Peter Blake, nicer bracelet, sword hands and classic black dial.
Jenni, the Omega Seamaster Pro with Pierce Brosnan might have been the first product placement ever. It was back in 1996 (I think). Rolex just missed the bus on this one.

I am a liveaboard sailor and I lost one of my favourite watches overboard because a spring bar failed. I prefer to use Nato straps now.

I have the Nomos nylon strap on my Campus. Very comfortable. I have the nylon strap on my Tudor Alinghi which is also great. But the nylon strap that came with the Tudor BB 925 is a nightmare🤦🏼♂️.
You should buy the watch that YOU like. If you like the style and design, that's good enough reason for you to have it - you do not need to justify anythimg to anybody beyond that. Having said that, there NOT many watches that have clean, classic design. The ones you look at and the first thing you think: "that's class." Also, there are people who want to be understated... wearing somethimg that screams "BRAND" (RM, Patek, Rolex, Omega) - it's just like zip-tying a stack of $100 on their wrist - garish.
I’d say most Rolex buyers only buy them because of the recognizable status that comes with it and not necessarily because they actually like the design of the watch. The Zenith El Primero Sport is clearly a homage of the Daytona done better imho.

i wouldn't even put a single-pass paracord strap on my watches because it make the watch look so thick on the wrist. it's insane to me that people would use double-pass straps like nato for the looks (entirely different story if you need nato strap for practical reasons).
