    In this video, we’ll look at the AGM-154A Joint Standoff Off Weapon, or JSOW, for the Viper. The JSOW is un unpowered glide bomb that weighs approximately a thousand pounds. It has a range to up to 70 miles range, based on launch altitude and airspeed. It is a fire-and-forget weapon that uses INS and GPS to reach its designated target.
    It can be loaded on stations 3 and 7 as either singles or pairs using a BRU-57 smart rack.
    The A model includes 145 BLU-97A combined effects bomb submunitions, which are ideal when attacking unarmored and lightly armored units. It is not though designed though to destroy heavily armored units like a main battle tank. While there are also B and C versions, the United States Air Force only operates the A version.
    Key commands:
    Set SPI - Target Management Switch (TMS) Up: Right Ctrl + Arrow Up
    Set SOI Between Displays - Display Management Switch (DMS) Down: Right Alt + .
    Set SOI to HUD - Display Management Switch (DMS) Up: Right Alt + ;
    Weapon Release: Right Alt + Space

    Great video! Another tip is that if you use the HAD sensor for HARMs, you can get a SPI with PRGM2 when targeting enemy radar sites, and release a JSOW. It’s fairly accurate, and allows you to keep your standoff at high altitudes. Finally, it also lets you conserve your HARMs for the biggest radar sites, such as S-300/S-400.

    Is the TGP be slewable to the SPI or only to waypoints?
    Will markpoints later on make it possible to define SPIs (and let us slew the TGP to it for multiple releases per pass and not having to rely on waypoints (that require pre-planning, kinda like we can do in the A-10C) Hoping to make the viper a good CAS platform as well..

  • @milkovivaldi
    @milkovivaldi 2 года назад +10

    4:20 Matt, when we launch 2 💣 together we know that the “space impact” is the distance between 2 JSOW 💣 considering the SPI at the center right?
    But these 💣 do not fall whole to the ground (such as JDAM), but open in the air in clusters. Therefore the “space impact” is calculated from the center of 1st 💣💣💣 💣 to the center of 2nd or simply the distance between 2 JSOW 💣 in the air?

    Hi Matt, thanks for the video. Can you move the TGP cursor to change the SPI when in PRE mode? If yes, how does PRE differ from VIS? In VIS you used the HUD first to get the cursor to the area and finetuned it with the TGP. So basically in both scenarios you selected the target with the TGP. I don't really get what the difference is then between VIS and PRE.

    • @Wawar9
      @Wawar9 2 года назад

      PRE is designed to engage targets you already knew the existence, AKA preplanned targets. VIS is designed to quickly engage target of opportunity you have in visual, putting the thing on the thing on the HUD and go.
      You could do the same in PRE with the SP mode of the TGP btw.

This was eluded to in the JDAM video where TMS Up Long was mentioned. Is this the correct procedure or would I need to use VIS to locate a target close to my SP but not ON my SP? Really looking forward to the upcoming Viper toys!

  • @BrotherBloat

    I'm not quite clear what the difference is between the modes. In the hornet, a pre-planned mode can only be dropped on target punched into the weapon system. Here, you said it can be dropped on any SPI, such as steerpoint, HUD or pod. Subsequently, the VIS mode seems to do the same thing... Or did you mean that in PRE mode you can only drop onto a steerpoint?

    Question for both the JSOW and JDAM... I notice by default the attack azimuth is set to 0 degrees and isn't used unless you manually adjust it first. If you do change it and later decide you don't care, is there a way to reset it? Like say for example I set it to an attack azimuth of 090 for my primary target, then as I'm on my way home, flying South, I spot a target of opportunity and I just want to drop on it without having to worry about the bomb or JSOW making a sharp turn to try and match the configured azimuth.

      There are many versions of the Thunderbirds already for down load on the ED User Files site. Have you looked there? Also, there could be some Holloman paints already, if not, it is best to contact one of the many livery creators and provide them with pics or links to the specific aircraft of squadron you want painted. I have found in the past most to be personable and if you are patient they will get to your request when they are done with what they want to do. It never hurts to ask.

    Can any plane boys explain the gap between the fuselage and the intake? Doesn't that increase drag? Isn't that the very last thing you want in a fighter aircraft?

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 2 года назад +5

      When the skin of the aircraft faces incoming air there's a boundary layer that "sticks" to the aircraft and if the engine sucks it in it can affect performance, so the gap allows that air to divert to the sides while a plate ensures that the engine gets fed a more laminar flow. If you look at a F-4 Phantom it also has those gaps. And in modelling aircraft that come in pieces you can sometimes see that the fuselage piece without the intakes has a "reverse teardrop" shape to be as aerodynamic as possible. The F-16 has that too, the gap has a thin "web" at the front and the shape increases thickness towards the rear like the bow in a ship.

    Although its superior range, it looks like cannot do much damage. In the last shot most of the light armored vehicles survived. And they were located close. A single cbu 97 would wipe them out completely

    • @urgentsiesta7606
      @urgentsiesta7606 2 года назад

      The A is not an anti-armor weapon, It's essentially a stand-off precision guided CBU-87. the B which we're not getting, is the anti-armor version "CBU-97". The A is useful for airfield attack/denial, trucks, troops, SAMs, artillery, installations, warehouses, and they'd do a number on POL sites, as well. etc., etc., etc.

    • @f-16c
      @f-16c 2 года назад

      @@urgentsiesta7606 Well the CBU-87 in DCS is also very underrated. These are light armored vehicles and the weapon did almost no damage. We are talking about 2x1000lbs area effect munitions. Forget the tents, they get destroyed by anything in DCS. Its just fireworks. Is this right? I don't think so because the CBU family is a very destructive and reliable combat proven weapon. Check the numbers used in combat by the USAF. Drop on 20 closely placed BMPs and 2-3 destroyed? Not really good. These aren't T-72s or T-80s.

    It's a real shame no branch (navy in particular) chose to procure the B variant- those submunitions are by far the most effective cluster munitions in DCS at this time and would've made for fantastic tank busting. I know you guys typically operate on a "if the platform could've possibly used it then it's available else no" type of deal so I'm not expecting it, just highlighting how much of a shame it is for our purposes.

    • @AlexClarkLighting
      @AlexClarkLighting 2 года назад

      By all accounts the B had a slew of technical issues and they never got it to work right. They went over budget trying to get it to work and never did get it to work reliably, which is why it was canceled.
